I think these handshakes are just undertoned traits of the powerful. They do seem to enjoy it and when President Trump and the Japanese Prime Minister shook hands, it turned out to be a battle as well but the Trump and the Japanese Prime Minister agreed the others hand shake was strong. Imo

They were evicted following a military excursion where the much smaller Portugal force was over come. This is something both nations apparently still harbour in the back of their minds.
