Savage Flies is a project with the mission of encouraging and teaching fly tying to as many people as possible. The channel is named after one of my western Maryland homewaters, the Savage River. Thanks for stopping by.
Good morning Matt. Really nice choice for variety and unusual techniques. Bass guys use dubbing loops: twisting long tough fibers in two equal sections, furling it all together and brushing it out to make worm flies. You use braided fishing line for the loop putting a bead with a stinger hook in the middle of the loop and twist away. Check it out. Cool stuff with endless possibilities. Always a pleasure viewing. Thanks.
Great tip Tom! I've never seen that but will check it out. 👍
Furled bodies make neat looking, pretty good floating flies. Nice tie!
Great job Matt. Nice techniques. Thanks.
Appreciate it Kenny! Have a great weekend my friend. :-)
Good day Matt!very cool pattern and i think this will do really well.thanks as always.
Thanks Mike! Always appreciate it my friend. :-)
I've been tying these up but in the green drakes. It's a killer technique for sure. Thanks for sharing!!
Great to hear! And I appreciate the note my friend. :-)
Have tied foam extended bodies but never a furled one - as always, learned something new on one of my most favorite channels!!
Thanks Matt for sharing, Nice Technique for an extended body fly. Beautifully done.
Appreciate it Lee! Have a great weekend my friend. :-)
Love your ease of explanations. Thank you.
Well thank you my friend! I appreciate the note. :-)
My favorite ties are dry flies. Cool looking fly. Thx Matt. Have a great weekend.
Appreciate it Clyde! And you too my friend. :-)
Cool looking fly, Matt
Hope you have a great weekend. Thanks for the video
Jeff Hatton is also a member of the Classic Flyrod Forum and has a traveling rod show of bamboo rods. He also creates some pretty awesome rods of his own under Gnomish Rodworks.
Pretty awesome guy to chat with!
Wow Mike, great info to share! I think he's got a cool pattern here too. Thanks for the note. 👍
Good morning Matt. ☕️time. Great looking fly and on the first take too. Like the furl technique. I’m heading out fishing tomorrow for the day. Going to chase some Pike. Should be fun. Have a great weekend Matt.
Outstanding! Send me a picture if you get a nice one! I have never caught a pike-- at least on a rod. Oddly enough, I have caught some pike fry in a wire minnow trap. At least when I did the research I *think* they were pike. It's possible they were musky but probably pike based on the tributary I caught them in.
Good Evening Sir Matt The Furled Sally is really super nice, and believe it or not I have used that technique for the extended body a few times. Great color choice, enjoy your weekend Sir.
You made it look easy to tie!
Nice fly. Thanks Matt.
That’s a really cool fly.
Wow awesome how ya do a furled body!! Thanks for sharing! Learn something new everyday!! Tight lines!!
I always love the knowledge and techniques. I have never seen this technique for an extended body, but I will try it later today. Thanks, Matt.
Thanks Howard and have fun with it my friend!
Another nice one Matt, thank you for sharing. Have a blessed day my friend.
You bet! I always appreciate you watching. :-)
Beautiful day today, made even better by this and Tuesday's video. Great job on tying this furled fly body. I really like the hook choice too. Thanks Matt, have a great weekend!
Appreciate it Joe! I think I'm going to buckle down and straighten up my tying room this weekend. It's been looming over me for weeks now. I actually started reorganizing, just to the point of making it a total mess. Then I gave up and went on a couple vacations, some work travel, and generally got busy enough to keep blowing it off.
@SavageFlies Can't be worse than mine, and I don't do a 1/4 of what you do. Keep the faith brother 🙏 🙂👍
@@joeduca8582 If I get it squared away enough, maybe I'll do another bench tour video. 🙂
@@SavageFlies😁👍
Awesome technique and video as always. Finally closed on a new house a couple weeks ago so I can’t wait to get a fly tying place set up & start attempting to all of the amazing patterns I’ve been watching on your channel over the last year. I hope you have a Blessed weekend my friend. Mega Thx !!!
Wow, congrats my friend! A new house and setting up a new tying area can be fun. A lot of work too, but it can still be exciting and fun. Of course, if you're like me, in five years your bench will be out of control!
Cool fly and great demo. Never tried that technique before. Thanks Matt!
Appreciate it Pete! I can't remember where I first saw it. Probably Barry or Davie M.
Good morning ☕️☕️
Oh yeah that looks like a killer bug😉
Yeah, hopefully so! I suppose I should tie a couple more-- if I only have one, it'll be sure to end up in a tree. :-)
That's a great looking fly Matt> Thanks for sharing the technique.
Thanks Daryl! Always appreciate you watching my friend.
Very interesting tie. Great job, especially try #1!!
Appreciate it Bob! Have a great weekend my friend. :-)
Great fly Matt. Interesting extended bode technique.
Appreciate it, John! Have a great weekend my friend!
Great technique! Might experiment on some Dragon Fly patterns for Largemouth. Thanks Matt! Have a great weekend. 👍👍🎣👌
Yes Charlie! Great call. This could make a great dragon or damsel fly body. Just get you some blue or funky colored yarn. :-)
Interesting technique.
Thanks Bob! I hope you've been well. I did get your note a while back but I'm so behind on reading emails (and the comments here). It's been a hectic summer so far. But one cool thing that has kept me busy... we got an Airstream last month. We've taken it out for one long weekend so far and are pretty excited about planning more trips. And I convinced my wife to put Maine and the Rangeley region on our to-go-to list. :-)
Nice fly Matt. Once again the color combinations to match the bugs in your area are endless. Wish me luck next Thursday I'm going to a tax foreclosure sale to bid on 2 acres on a little stream. The house ain't much but it will be a good place to park my motorhome in the summer. Keep the good stuff coming buddy.
Oh man Dave, I've got my fingers crossed for you! I would LOVE to have a cabin on a stream. Maybe someday I'll win the lottery and buy a stretch on the Savage. :-)
@SavageFlies It's not much of a stream but I think it has fish. I guess that's why I have a 2 wt rod. We'll have to see how much it goes for but the reserve price is less than $5,000. I have a budget and it's not much. I'll know by next Thursday noon.
@@johnnylightning1491 Good luck brother!
Probably a good idea for a damsel fly pattern too. Hmmmmm.
Hmmmm... yes! I think it would make a cool dragon or damsel fly. Probably couldn't make it too big though, but there are small dragon flies out there. :-)
That was really neat how you did the extended body, you make it look easy. Thanks Matt 👍. Hey Matt I have a question, do you prefer the hook eye down or Stright? Why? I prefer it to be down, but I really don't know why. Is it a matter of preference?
Thanks Jim! I'm almost indifferent when it comes to straight, up or down eye. Particularly with nymphs and dry flies I don't think it matters much. It does a little more with streamers, or wet flies that you fish actively. I'd say I slightly prefer a down eye with my streamers that way it might give it a downward action when you strip it.
@@SavageFlies thanks 😊
I also like down-eye hooks rather than straight-eye for parachute flies. Seems to give a little more maneuvering room when tying them on the tippet.
