    Please don't boil the bones with the marrow still inside. The bone is porous and the fat from the marrow will go into all of the deep pores in the bone. This does two things First, it colors the bone an dull yellow color instead of the white to make it look like ivory. Second, the fat in the pores will turn rancid and no matter how you try, the piece will always smell. I scrape the raw bone inside and out and then lay it on an ant hill for a week or so to let them clean it for me. You have to do that somewhere wild animals won't walk off with the bone.

      Cold maceration works as well. If you cant wait then clean as much as possible, inside and out, then warm water with a little detergent and bleach will leech out most of the fat and organic material. Its a dirty job but someone has to do it. Rebleaching can be done until bone is white and unblemished.

      @@jimreille3155 I've done it that way too but since I have a large stash of cleaned bone, I have the time to do it the way I described. BTW, as a final step after carving and polishing, put the piece in boiling paraffin melted in a double boiler to do a final sealing of those pores. When the bone cools it gets a final buffing and stays shiny forever.

      @@jusdafax1 Thats interesting, about the "after carving" fiinish. Ive not heard of that before, I learnt from a chap whos old school. As the piece is worn it takes on the wearers own oils giving it an interesting 'off white' look. Its a traditional way of doing things here.

    • @jusdafax1
      @jusdafax1 4 года назад +1

      @@jimreille3155 I also use soup bones for scrimshaw and the wax filling of the pores is necessary to keep the ink from running. I liked the way it looked and us it for all my now.

      i have been doing it this way since i started carving bones and skulls, like 35 years now! i found that if i put a steel wire basket and a brick over it and then fence it in i have no problems with animals getting them and the ants get the job done.

    Great!
    I find that burying the bone in the garden for a while, then continuing with bleaching etc. saves a lot of the preliminary work.

    Hi, when this has happened to me I returned the bone to boiling water for a few hours more (only water - do not add salt) and then leave it to dry several hours or for a day or two. The more time the better. Normally this helps. Good luck!

      If you enjoy carving bone or want to learn how to. You tube is a great source of information. Hawaiian bone art is very popular. I have done several pieces in bone. Cow leg bone is the easiest to obtain and process. Dremel tools are great to work with. However they can be expensive. Harbor Freight is a great alternative for the budget friendly tools. They also have tool bit kits available with a variety of different options for working with bone. One other safety tip. Make sure you ware a dust mask to protect yourself from the bone dust. It can damage your lungs. Happy bone crafting. GF1 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😎

    Hi Balazs ......... Sorry for the delay in answering ........ First you cook only 10 minutes to remove the marrow and the rest easier.....after cleaning cook as long as possible, for example 24 hours.
