  • Wouldn't it be nice to see flowers while the Winter weather is still here? Saucer Magnolia trees produce flowers that are like giant cherry blossoms. These flowers are so shapely, elegant, and colorful that would accent any garden landscape. Saucer Magnolia is a shrubby tree, and even though it can grow up to 25 feet, it can be pruned to a small to medium tree. Unlike regular Magnolia trees, Saucer Magnolia does not have aggressive roots that push the ground up, so they are suitable near structures too. These trees were originally developed by Japanese by grafting. In February, the Saucer Magnolia flowers appear as small buds. These buds would take a while to get larger, and then bloom open to a flower often to about the size of a palm of the hand. The branches are dark brown in the Winter and add extra warm color to the landscape. In late March the leaves come out and cover the tree in a fresh sap green color. The overall tree shape is very graceful and improves with pruning.
The trees can be purchased at different sizes from local and nurseries. I purchased one from an online nursery and one from Amazon.com. Getting the seedling to grow into a tree is a task, because summer heat arrives when the roots may not have been established better. You can plant them in containers well. With proper care, they do well in large containers. Water the newly-planted tree well both in container and in the ground. and look for new leaf buds on the branches as a sign of growth. Don't expect fast growth and lots of peripheral branching on the planted tree right away. Put some balanced feed around the tree during Spring and Summer, and once the tree grows vertical branches over 2 feet, do some pruning to help it get more horizontal branches. Pruning is mostly for a grown tree, as the trees that are 1-2 feet don't really need it. Plant the tree in a soil full of organic content that drains well. Half shade is ok. Thanks for visiting my garden today.
