America: “We can’t build high speed rail, our geography doesn’t work for it”
Japan:
It's not the Geography per say, but the horrible dispersion of the population.
Connecting east to west by train would undoubtedly give rise to economically unsustainable lines.
Yes there are great plains ideal for the layout of the tracks, but if they cross a huge pop° vacuum it is not profitable.
@@sondadir9205 Surely USA can connect east cost states by themselves and connect west coast states by themselves. I can see a high speed train from dc to phili to nyc to boston very profitable. Maybe extend it all the way to Miami.
@@jaehongsong4904 I read an article once that said that for high speed rail to be profitable, the cities have to be at a particular distance and of a particular size. Too close and it makes more sense to drive. Too far apart and it makes more sense to fly. The article listed Los Angeles to San Francisco, Dallas to Houston, and NY to Washington DC as the routes that would be profitable. Well, the first has already been tried, and the politicians turned it into an expensive debacle. Also, there are other factors. Most US cities are so spread out that they'll never have good public transportation and you'd need a car to get around once you reach your destination anyway (unlike Japan).
Actually Japan's geography does work for high speed rail. It has high population density (large cities that are fairly close together). The cities themselves are compact enough to have good public transportation within the cities themselves. The US is the exact opposite- mostly small cities that are spread out over a vast area. And most of those cities are sprawl that will never have good public transportation. Even if you arrived at one via public transportation, you'd need a car when you get there anyway.
Building High Speed Rails is very addicting, once you built the first one, more will come soon after. America just have not gotten pass building the first one.
This is a great explanation of the cause of WW2 which is often forgotten. But what needs to be mentioned is that where Japan occupied are Dutch Indonesia, French Indonchine, American Philippines, British Malaya etc… which all were conquered by the Western powers because they also needed resources like Japan.

Japan's terrain actually has many advantages as it's one of the most difficult countries to invade. Japan is rich in sea territory which is the 8th largest in the world. Japan has a huge amount of natural riches in the deep sea (minerals, gas, oil) which can be mined with better technology. Japan also creates new reclaimed land and artificial islands from the sea whenever new land is needed.
@@chaechai9383 I live in America I've never been shot, never known anyone who's been shot outside of war veterans.
Very good overview. Here's a couple of additional points that people might be interested in.
1. Thanks to volcanism Japan has the most naturally fertile soil in the world. This helped the country to support large populations going into the industrial age.
2. Thanks to its location in the northern hemisphere Japan had excellent fishing grounds. This also contributed to its large population.
3. In addition to earthquakes and tsunamis, Japan suffers from landslides and flooding due to its high rainfall and steep mountains.
So this is why japan is so good at different things from their cars, food, games and the tourists trade etc they rely on quality to draw in and make money
Necessity is the mother of invention
Also relies on order and respect to combat chaos from natural disasters and over population.
They do suffer quite a bit in workplace culture due to this unfortunately.

Hello from Japan
Seeing all the struggles they face from nature and still manage to be an economic and cultural power is amazing.
Here in the Middle East we have everything we could ask for from nature whether it is oil or agricultural sunny space or stable land. yet we are doomed by wars and starvation.
I think a nation's wealth comes from its people. not its geography.
Aging population. Economic stagnation. Outdated work ethic, long empty work hours. Outdated way to process paperwork, still relying heavily on actual paper which drags the procedures. Heavy reliance on import to run. These last 20 years, Japan looks like a superpower only when you squint.
My mom likes to say that "you can have a rich population, or a rich government. If the people own their homes and have free time for themselves, they are rich. If the people have their homes because of loans that force them to work to the bone, and work long hours to afford those homes or they are forced on the street, then the government is rich."

First, the reason why we quit the national isolation was not because we needed natural resources or economical improvement but because USA forced us to open the ports (threaten with weapons). And then in 1858, US, UK, Russia, France, Netherlands forced unequal treaties on us like other Asian nations. We struggled to escape from their colonization.
Of course, I don't want to glorify our imperialism. I don't want to be accused wrongfully. I want you all over the world to know the true history.
I’m well aware of this but resource wars probably would’ve occurred whether or not the western powers intervened it would’ve just been a matter of time. Though the terms may have been a bit more favorable for Japan had the leaders at the time sought out the western powers first rather then being forced to open up. (I doubt this but it’s nice to hope for) Either way my initial point stands in that Japan as a nation would’ve needed to go one direction or the other in order to secure what it needs for its people

As a Chinese, I appreciate your view of history. After West invaded East Asia, Japan had been much more successful in modernization than anyother East Asian counrties. But sadly Japan went on the same way as West imperialism did. China is all out on her way to modernization now. I do believe China will be a peaceful power.

Realifelore: why Japans geography sucks
Wendover productions: am I a joke to you
OooOf!
Japan video is invading wendover productions turf... 😂
Realifelore: Yes, yes you are
Japan is a wild place for a lot of reason the weather today was nuts for instance, but it gives me so much energy living here. I could never live in any other place in the world again.
They should move the mountains to the coast to protect against tsunamis and make more flat land duh.
ahh yes very simple task
I agree.
We should just TAKE the mountains and push them SOMEWHERE ELSE
What a brilliant idea! (not)
"Every single nuclear reactor was closed by 2012. Today in 2019, 4% of Japan's energy comes from nuclear"
What?
That confused me too
Yep my ears pricked up at that
Every reactor is closed for new inspection and security upgrade at 2012, since then some of them has been reactivatef
Correction
Every single nuclear reactor was closed by 2012. _Later some of them was opened after inspection._ Today in 2019....

Because when your population wants to be mentally handicapped and do something as stupid as shutting down relatively clean energy in favor of fossil fuels, you need to take charge as a leader to stop the stupidity.

The fact that Japan managed to become a powerful country despite major loses and ridiculous terrain just shows how quick the Japanese people adapted and improved their situation, even combatting Earthquakes! Well done still despite odds.
a country with huge population but owns the strongest passport in the world, respect

maybe it was these difficulties that hardened people and necessity made them hardworking people
Watching this type of videos about Japan always makes me feel extremely impressed by the things they as a nation have accomplished in spite of all the odds and lack of resources. Mexico is one of the richest countries in natural resources and its geography is incredible, and still we haven't been able to keep up with the rest of the world in terms of development. Makes you think about a lot of things.
The good news is Mexico makes frequent lists of ascending world powers, so maybe in your life time you will see a glorious Mexico that generations before could never imagine!

Wait a minute... so u tellin me, ww2 still going on?
I mean technically it's kinda like a ceasefire, but yes.
Yeah. They expect Russia to somehow magically just give them the land that was never really theirs in the first place. The fact that they have the audacity to demand anything after the war is just mind-blowing.
@@VAArtemchuk Not saying the Japanese claim is valid, but "never really theirs" as you put is also wrong, the Russian government ceded those islands to Japan in contract in the 19th century, in return Japan would leave Sakhalin to Russian administration. That was the deal back then. The imho better reasons why the Islands should be Russian are: a) Japan lost the war, for a lost war loosing disputed territory is normal and b) The inhabitants now are mostly ethnic people from former Soviet states.
Big picture: these Islands are not worth arguing over for two countries of over 100 mio inhabitants, the only reason why a solution is not found yet is, that these kind of conflicts can always be used to rile up the population with nationalist rhetoric and an "us vs them" propaganda. So what these Islands claims mostly provide is political leverage for those in power. That's probably the only reason why the issue isn't resolved yet.
@@Jonathanizer Can't even argue that. A fun thing is that the argument for "their islands" feels like "give us back what we conquered from you a hundred years ago!"
@@VAArtemchuk Maybe they figured: Russia has too much land, and wants to unburden herself of a bit of it ^^
Having mountains and bad excess is a plus out of an environmental perspective. Japan has so much nature in comparison to Europe (In the Netherlands, no natural forest has really made it up to today for example)
That is very interesting information about Japan.
Iran: too many mountains to the point they couldn't expand their empire very well
Japan: too many mountains but too little natural resources
Meanwhile Poland: it's flat and surrounded by enemies from all sides.
At least Iran doesn't have to worry about the mountains FREAKING EXPLODING
Why they make themselves surrounded by enemies? Same question for Japan.

Never thought of Japan as a “she”
@Boi It is a country. Thus you use "it".
E.g. Japan has much less liveable space thannyou would think. Despite it being fairly large.
It’s a good term to use, people use the “she” prefix on cars, ships and countries, because, like a mother, she carries and sustains life.
@@harrymorris2361 i was told in school that you call a car, boat or Country a "she/her" because they take a "man's firm hand to keep them steady"
The custom is to call nations with female pronouns.
In many languages with pronouns 'country' is a girl/female.
