It's not the Geography per say, but the horrible dispersion of the population. Connecting east to west by train would undoubtedly give rise to economically unsustainable lines. Yes there are great plains ideal for the layout of the tracks, but if they cross a huge pop° vacuum it is not profitable.
@@sondadir9205 Surely USA can connect east cost states by themselves and connect west coast states by themselves. I can see a high speed train from dc to phili to nyc to boston very profitable. Maybe extend it all the way to Miami.
@@jaehongsong4904 I read an article once that said that for high speed rail to be profitable, the cities have to be at a particular distance and of a particular size. Too close and it makes more sense to drive. Too far apart and it makes more sense to fly. The article listed Los Angeles to San Francisco, Dallas to Houston, and NY to Washington DC as the routes that would be profitable. Well, the first has already been tried, and the politicians turned it into an expensive debacle. Also, there are other factors. Most US cities are so spread out that they'll never have good public transportation and you'd need a car to get around once you reach your destination anyway (unlike Japan).
Actually Japan's geography does work for high speed rail. It has high population density (large cities that are fairly close together). The cities themselves are compact enough to have good public transportation within the cities themselves. The US is the exact opposite- mostly small cities that are spread out over a vast area. And most of those cities are sprawl that will never have good public transportation. Even if you arrived at one via public transportation, you'd need a car when you get there anyway.
Building High Speed Rails is very addicting, once you built the first one, more will come soon after. America just have not gotten pass building the first one.
Forgot to mention that Japan also gets crazy precipitation all year. Massive downpours every summer with Monsoon season, which combined with the mountains makes not only flooding by landslides a constant issue. And then heavy snowfalls every winter in the northern area, giving Japan the snowiest cities in the world.
Iran: too many mountains to the point they couldn't expand their empire very well Japan: too many mountains but too little natural resources Meanwhile Poland: it's flat and surrounded by enemies from all sides.
The fact that Japan managed to become a powerful country despite major loses and ridiculous terrain just shows how quick the Japanese people adapted and improved their situation, even combatting Earthquakes! Well done still despite odds.
@Angello! R. *eating popcorn while waiting for someone to call you racist* Also, just because they have a lot of one race doesn't necessarily mean they all have the same ideals and needs.
This is a great explanation of the cause of WW2 which is often forgotten. But what needs to be mentioned is that where Japan occupied are Dutch Indonesia, French Indonchine, American Philippines, British Malaya etc… which all were conquered by the Western powers because they also needed resources like Japan.
I'm Japanese, and you mustn't tell lies. First, the reason why we quit the national isolation was not because we needed natural resources or economical improvement but because USA forced us to open the ports (threaten with weapons). And then in 1858, US, UK, Russia, France, Netherlands forced unequal treaties on us like other Asian nations. We struggled to escape from their colonization. Of course, I don't want to glorify our imperialism. I don't want to be accused wrongfully. I want you all over the world to know the true history.
I’m well aware of this but resource wars probably would’ve occurred whether or not the western powers intervened it would’ve just been a matter of time. Though the terms may have been a bit more favorable for Japan had the leaders at the time sought out the western powers first rather then being forced to open up. (I doubt this but it’s nice to hope for) Either way my initial point stands in that Japan as a nation would’ve needed to go one direction or the other in order to secure what it needs for its people
That's right the American & Europeans country want the Asia be Colonized by them, because Asia have a big mineral resources..Here in the Philippines 🇵🇭,Spain colonized us about 400 years after that American helped us to get our independent but the U.S.colonized us too 50 years..Back in Japan 'Shogunate' the Samurai defend their country 🇯🇵 against Portuguese & Spain so Japan are the unique country in the world..we Filipino's changed our attitude & the way of living because of the greedy countries..we lost our own culture because of the Catholic who spread lies & brainwashed us Filipino's,we lost our dignity..The people didn't know this or they didn't think about it 🤔

@@VAArtemchuk Not saying the Japanese claim is valid, but "never really theirs" as you put is also wrong, the Russian government ceded those islands to Japan in contract in the 19th century, in return Japan would leave Sakhalin to Russian administration. That was the deal back then. The imho better reasons why the Islands should be Russian are: a) Japan lost the war, for a lost war loosing disputed territory is normal and b) The inhabitants now are mostly ethnic people from former Soviet states. Big picture: these Islands are not worth arguing over for two countries of over 100 mio inhabitants, the only reason why a solution is not found yet is, that these kind of conflicts can always be used to rile up the population with nationalist rhetoric and an "us vs them" propaganda.

This is a great explanation of the cause of WW2 which is often forgotten. But what needs to be mentioned is that where Japan occupied are Dutch Indonesia, French Indonchine, American Philippines, British Malaya etc… which all were conquered by the Western powers because they also needed resources like Japan.
If I had a nickel for all the time the West conveniently forgets its own imperial activities, I'd be richer than Bill Gates.

(I doubt this but it’s nice to hope for) Either way my initial point stands in that Japan as a nation would’ve needed to go one direction or the other in order to secure what it needs for its people
Perry: "open the country stop having it be closed"
What colonization
That's right the American & Europeans country want the Asia be Colonized by them, because Asia have a big mineral resources..Here in the Philippines 🇵🇭,Spain colonized us about 400 years after that American helped us to get our independent but the U.S.colonized us too 50 years..Back in Japan 'Shogunate' the Samurai defend their country 🇯🇵 against Portuguese & Spain so Japan are the unique country in the world..we Filipino's changed our attitude & the way of living because of the greedy countries..we lost our own culture because of the Catholic who spread lies & brainwashed us Filipino's,we lost our dignity..The people didn't know this or they didn't think about it 🤔
As a Chinese, I appreciate your view of history. After West invaded East Asia, Japan had been much more successful in modernization than anyother East Asian counrties. 1. Thanks to volcanism Japan has the most naturally fertile soil in the world. This helped the country to support large populations going into the industrial age.

So what these Islands claims mostly provide is political leverage for those in power. That's probably the only reason why the issue isn't resolved yet.

@@NoKOzKamui The US is pretty much the only country that has basically every climate, we have tropical beaches, swamp country, woods, tall mountains, rainforest, desert, northern barren ice.

I love Japanese. They don't have natural resources but they have brain and hard working hands.
Discipline, respectful, politeness, , manners, education all things gone missing in the UK if ever were there
@@rob5197 As a Japanese, I think British people and Japanese have similar mindset.
I suppose it’s because we both live in an island. Like Americans, they don’t really like gossip but British people and the Japanese both love gossip... in Japan there’s exact same type of magazine just like “Sun” in the UK, and people here loving it.
Also, Japanese men and British men love porn.
Very similar.

All those conditions are why Japan is home of some of histories toughest and most disciplined cultures since ancient Sparta.
True. I like your comparison with Sparta.

@@koutarouandresllerena7940 I don't think I could actually handle everything I'd need to to actually move to Japan, given I'm bad at learning new languages.
But, I will say, current events over here in the US are a mess. Extreme activists burning down people who have nothing to do with anything's homes (Not saying all the activists, just, a pretty awful chunk). Propaganda that sweeps it all under the rug. Every day it seems to get worse. Hopefully things clear up, but, right now, it's hard to imagine living in Japan being any worse.
@@Vgy1592 you should be proud that you live in Usa because Every good thing that you have seen in Japan are far from the reality.
@@blankchisel2075 Don't get me wrong, I'm proud of living in the US, in general. But current events are far from ideal. I'm more coming from a fear of the possibility of things getting worse, than any feelings about how the US has been.

nope. california 39 million, tokyo 9 million, tokyo greater area 38 million.
Great summary, but one cavil: Japan does not claim the entire Kuril Island chain. Japan claims the southernmost part, which it calls the Northern Territories and Russia calls the South Kurils.
I can confirm that in Russia it’s somehow a big deal 🤷🏻♀️don’t know why, I guess those who inhabit those islands would be glad to become part of japan

Japan changed from a World Domination win to a Cultural/Technology one
@Chicken Stealer to whom?
@Chicken Stealer they are the best exporting manufacturer. A lot of technology of usa, china and more are imatation of what japan does.
@Chicken Stealer Japan is one of the largest car manufacturer, video-game producers and consumer electronic producers in the world. According to the Human Development Index, Japan's quality of life and development is increasing. Japan does have few issues such as their debt, but most of that debt is internal debt towards their own country instead of external debt, but Japan is still prospering despite their lack of economic growth and slowdown. How did they lose or how are they loosing?
@Chicken Stealer I never said they don't have problems. The population issue is a problem but I believe Japan can soon improve their population as they had slightly improved and are trying to improve their working conditions for middle class, white collar workers; such as by decreasing the amount of working hours. It will be difficult due to the already imposed working standards, but they are trying to change this. Also they have priorities into watching Anime? Pretty sure its the work ethic that's encouraging Japan to not have kids and work more. Not an innocent style of Animation and media that originates in Japan. lol. But Japan does have an issue that is critical and should be solved to save their economy and increase the amount of tax payers in the country. And uhhh, I don't know about the last part...
@Chicken Stealer But overall they do have an aging demographic problem that needs to be solved to increase the work force and tax payers.
