- In this very special episode, we "Kickback with" two bass icons that not too many people realize have known each other since they were kids... Victor Wooten (Solo / Béla Fleck and the Flecktones) and James Genus (Saturday Night Live Band / Herbie Hancock) reunite at Hartke HQ to talk about growing up together, discuss what influenced their playing and, of course, JAM!

Wow! I knew all those guys. I grew up with them. Roy (Futureman) was my first drum teacher when I was in elementary school. My mother was always late picking me up after my lesson, so Vic would come out into the garage and we would jam. One day all of the Wooten Brothers came out into the garage and I got to jam with them. Talk about a rush! I played in Kecoughtan High School's jazz band with James Genus. They are right. The Tidewater Virginia area was rich with talent back then. It was an amazing scene.
Derrick Wilson ... you sir, are a lucky man
Man! Ain't that something! Cheers.
You are one lucky dude!!! I hope you are still playing.
Right place at the right time! good for you man, cool story to tell.
Those experiance you had is a GEM, and those thing DO stay with you. Thank you for share Derrick.
music just lives in Victor Wooten's heart
I feel like I just hung out with these guys and I didn't say a word the entire time. Also, James looks so imposing and intimidating on SNL, but it seems he's the sweetest cat in the world to chat with.
I'm a little older BUT I hear ya loud and clear. We lived in a better time. Just thank God for that! Those Summers! NO Internet! NO cell phones! People now (youngsters) can't imagine.
I’m with victor man, i miss the days when you’d get a group of people together with the purpose of just grooving, practicing, exploring. What happened to that man? Dudes get together these days and it’s, what songs do you want to play? That’s fine, but I grew so much more as a musician when the verbal communication would stop and the musical conversation began.
This is too cool man. I can only imagine what it’d be like hearing the guys practice together back then!
Thank you for recognizing Prince's influence! He was an awesome bassist as well! 🎸🔥
The best 21 minutes of my life
you can see happiness in both faces
This is just so funky! Great memories! Thanks guys for sharing your jam session!!!
I know Victor is not one of the tallest guys around, but I didn’t realize how big James is standing next to him
I thought the same too.
paul relvas genus is like 6'3
paul relvas Vic is a little shorter than me and about the same level of thicc. I feel intimidated by James from watching this video.
try to listen more and close your eyes bro
Please let me now if ya'll know humble musicians. As talented and hungry as these 2 legends!!!
How can I sit and watch 20 minutes of two guys talking about their old friends from the neighborhood that I don't know and still be completely drawn in an captivated?
Internet gold! Two legends jam'in and reminiscing. @$#%'in awesome!
....and this is what's missing in our music today....Man, wish we could get at least half of that back.....
"I don't know the right key" Does it matter? LOL You're awsome in any key! Congrats from Brazil, from a bass lover.
Cumpadi Washinghton não cansa de me surpreender.
Love listening to these cats talk about growing up .. I got kinda sad when Victor mentioned Kofi Burbridge. He was an amazing talent and and even better person. I miss him. RIP ... ~~~~
These guys are fantastic, so talented
James plays some flourishes at the tail end of the SNL intros that are friggin astounding.
you made me happy
Compadre Washington toca muito !!
So awesome to see Vic and James jammin. Plus all the nostalgic reminiscing.Legends!
this is beautiful to watch , two class old school pals . awesome
I grew up the same way. Besides the occasional hike up the mountain we playing music. I miss the days when I missed all those other things kids were doing.
James' ghost notes at the beginning!
I know right?
Listen to the Saturday Night Live theme song after the opening skit. James navigates those changes and plays so funky using those ghost notes its highly inspiring! Just brilliant!
Unfortunately, I'm one of THOSE people (who thinks SNL has been crap for a while) but I loved James with Herbie last year (2 years ago??)
Genius of all times !
Great video - Thank you.
beyond the chops and awesome musicianship, you can tell that they are great people as well. And that is true for almost all of the bass players I know. I don’t know what it is about the bass but I would say it has a way molding a person’s character unlike any other instrument(especially the electric guitar lol)
Smiling the whole time watching this:)
Victor wooten is my model man. This guy is just wow on that bass man.Since 2004 I've been following Victor wooten. He is a great musiciens humble guy the best bass player ever.👐👍👍✊
Man these guys are fucking good.
Saludos de chile....fanatico de victor woonten ...igual practico bass
magnificet timing
Beautiful💚
bass on bass action!
you don't see this everyday!
True musical brothers... what was in the water? VA Beach, one of America's true treasures.
Miss those day's
Wow they really feel their grove... deep pockets...
I was about to talk about ghost notes and how they are the true ingredient to funk playing and someone below mentioned James plays for the SNL band. Just listen to that opening music bass playing on that show and the sheer way he masters those funky ghost notes. He really inspired me to learn that style. Victor himself not only knows the bass parts to alot of these funk songs but also the rythym guitar parts. You dont hear bass playing like this in alternative rock. Those players tend to be intermediate guitar players who switch to bass and stick to the root. As Victor says the guys he listened to were real bass players. I was inspired by their music and more by their verbal and non verbal conversations.
Wonderful!
This was so cool... 2 dudes just hangin' out and reminiscing about back in the day, love it!
This is great!
the music was great of course... but the dialogue is priceless... so many different ways to view/interpret
We don't know the key either LOL, whatever key ya'll play sounds like the right one to me!
Sounds like whatever key it was, it should have been the key they play it in. Lol
Oh yeah - Now we're going Way Back.. Nice
They are having a really goog time together
TO MARTIN HEATH I AGREE WITH YOU ABOUT THE HIGH END BASS SOUND BEING CLICKY ,BECAUSE OF THE PRE-AMP,S IT,S TOUGH TO HAVE YOUR OWN SOUND BECAUSE ,BEING ACTIVE ,BUT WITH A PASSIVE BASS YOU CAN IMPOSE YOUR WILL AND YOU WILL HERE YOUR PERSONALITY COME THOUGH ,AND IT,S MORE ORGANIC SOUNDING.
I wish they could post all the selfies from back in the days.
This was wholesome as fuck :)
Sweet tones coming from the players, the instruments, and the amplification. So thankful that companies like Hartke have made the 'hi-fi' sound financially accessible to mere mortals like myself. But to be able to afford a Fodera AND possess Genus/Wooten chops? Well...
crazy sh..t!! i know the big guy from live performance with the brecker brothers!! 2 monsters on bass!!
great vid!
I am a huge James Genus fan. Have seen him with Herbie Hancock. It's out of this world! But recently came across this video. It's insane. The singer Mili is great and her compositions are outstanding. And having Vinnie Colaiuta, Michael Landau and George Whitty is scary. But with all that James is finding his space and playing some insane groove. Unbelievable!! James is featured in the whole album and sounds incredible! ruclips.net/video/4BJYikOmdz0/видео.html
Preach!
Genius
So f****** cool
Priceless. Juan Mike moore
Keep an eye on this kat. Hes gonna go places.
I don’t have an inch of the talent of Victor with à basse, but on singing.... I m quite close...... 😂😂😂
mmm...that tasty hartke tone.
I did know that Victor Wooten was older than James Genus!
Jemes Genus & Victor Genius
I was hoping they would throw down some Bernard Edwards bass lines!! Good Stuff!!!
wtf just 16k views for THIS?!
Muito groove
Wait?!!! I never knew these cats where from VA!!! Wooooow
compadre washington arrebenta! "Sabe de nada inocente" kkkkkk
hahahahahaha.... pensei o mesmo 🤣🤣🤣🤣
huahuahuaua.... pensei a mesma coisa
Pocket!
Compadre Washington e Victor Wooten.
they play a groove by THE TIME which one is that ??
I don't want no fancy car no drugs no super model I just want to learn how to play so I can jam like this and get that groove high you can't pay for that I won't that
You'd think a major brand like Hartke would have a little more...oh...I dunno ... "appointed"...studio?
When I found out that the video lasted 20 minutes, the video was over.
Anyone knows what is vic’s 1st bass guitar?
Suryadi Salim I think it was the Olympic
If you want to play bass, you got lo love music; don t do it for the likes or attention; just because you love it; Wooten and Genus agree with me on this one
Anybody know the groove right at the very beginning before they start playing? I know its something James has played with Herbie but I can't put my finger on it
He fuck the whole groove up trying to scat with the bass..
Where can I get a hat like Victor ? :)
Can someone name all the songs at the end ?
I admire these bass blayer... but Hartke...
Does vic play extra large scale bass, why dies his bas seem so big?
It's actually pretty normal sized. Vic is just a shorter dude
When bassplayers say Larry... they don't even need to mention the last name..
Victor's 4string looks huge, James 5string looks tiny.. lol
Newport News...the Moton
Not sure I love the singing through your solo
I’m sorry but am I the only one that noticed and is somewhat bothered by the fact that they are using sm58’s to mic the bass cabs ?
You're the only one. You're focusing on the wrong thing. All that great playing and conversation and you're staring at the mic? Really? See a specialist.
Yeah I agree with the other poster. Perfection can sometimes be a curse I guess. Im a bass player and not an equipment expert and these two gentleman sounded amazing. The instruments were a little on the high end side and active as I prefer passive but the funk and feeling came through fine!
Wouldn't matter they're playing through Hartke.
I want my twenty minutes back.....
Such fantastic players and phenomenal groove but something about these pristine "high end" clicky hifi active eq basses makes me yearn to hear these guys playing on down to earth old fashioned Fenders. That's the missing ingredient to my ears
if you watch a full demo of these basses they're capable of a lot more. including a coil tap so that they're no different than a fender jazz bass. i'm not a huge fan of this sound either but it's more due to the metallic hartke cabs, vic's thing-gauge strings, and their eq setting than anything else
@W P you're right, i saw him live a couple weeks ago in Mestre (Italy) and damn, his tone was surprisingly full of bass frequencies
these amps and cabinets are bright however in person or if you listen through a good set of speakers they sound much more balanced
Wonder what he means by all real bass players
Alot of people use computers to create bass tracks I think is what he meant.
I had to stop this video at 3min!!! So sick!!!
#watchdisnow
Like the playing, sounds great. I just can't get into singing what you play. IMHO I just think it sounds bad and try hard. Maybe I am missing the point of it?
Its probably just fun for em, or maybe its to demonstrate how familiar they are with the fretboard
If you sing out what you play then you demonstrate not only relative pitch, but you also show that you can improv fairly well by being able to play the concepts you have in your head and sing it out at the same time as you play it. It just shows that you can play whatever you want as long as you have an idea in your head, and that you're familiar with your instrument.
I know what you are saying, but to me I guess there is a level of showing off about it. Look, I can play what I hear in my head.... etc. I would rather just hear the bass that they are hearing in their head and know they have the skills to play what they hear instead of me hearing it too. Obviously both are insanely skilled and I like them both, that is just my thoughts and opinion
It’s not really a show-off thing for most dudes I don’t think. The point that I’ve heard is that it’s supposed to keep people from playing “licks” and make them play more lyrically. It’s not coming 100% from the hands, it’s coming from within.
@@DurfMcAllister ok, that makes more sense to me!😀cheers for that. I still wish they'd just humm, it still distracts me from what they are playing and their awesome tone ha ha. But at least I get it now, cheers!
SONOFAAAAAA........
needs some drums or at the very least percussion
i don't think this is the right key
Txutxupaaaan quem sabe quem tô fala da like kkk
......i quit
you all know eachother! if victor grew up in the big city, he would be more succesfull, cause thats the only thing that s missing. he is one of the best ,ever but grew up amongst hillbillies ,i heard. correct me if i m wrong
This is terrible lol
