"Just saw a group of people who didn't warm up before their run! People say they don't start feeling good in their run until 10 minutes into it... There's a better way: Step1: Run for 5-10 minutes" ...
Been running 40 years. The first mile is / was my warm up. I know I needed to properly warm up / stretch gentle pre race but was talking up to start. At age 75 soon I am going to warm up properly.
If you really have been running for over 40 years I really would love to learn from you I only been running for almost 3 and I still have a lot to learn the singer common starting to bring me motivation
For an warm up, I like performing the two exercises of jumping jacks, shoulder shrugs, and deep squat-dead lift-sky reach. Repeating these exercises for 3 sets. I do this with my resisted-calisthenics routine as well.
Thanks for the tips. When I see you performing these warm ups I'm like, "Of course, that makes perfect sense", but I have been running (off and on) for most of my life and I just never thought to do the 20-step warm ups that you demonstrate. Done all the others, but not those. Thanks again, great video!
This is the 5th video by The Run Experience in 3 days, and I am sold. Subscribed!!! All the tips are VERY helpful. I wish I had found this channel earlier before I developed runner's knee due to improper training/insufficient prep :( Still, I am going for my first marathon race this weekend with all that I have learned from your videos. Thank you!!
@@TheRunExperience Yes I ran my first marathon and owed that achievement to your video! I did the squat and swinging of legs and breathing-tall technique mentioned in another video of yours during the race. They made all difference in my performance and helped me carry through the 26 miles.
That was a killer video - awesome job. Will build the four steps in to my pre-run routine from now on. Up to now I've generally restricted mine warm ups to leg swings calf stretches and leg lunges but definitely see the merit in your routine. I especially like the stride out drill at the end - nice transition from warm up to running.
this is a really helpful video for someone like me who is getting back into running. One small tip for your video tho, get a lav mic so we can hear you better as you explain the steps :) thanks!
You started that off saying that most people just run to warmup and that they should warmup first.... then you prescribe 5-10min jog as the first warmup exercise 🤣🤣🤣
Great video! thanks. I used to warm up before a run. I still 'sort of' warm up, but now I will do all this and see how I feel. Hate the feeling that the first 20 minutes feels like a slog!
Thanks for this! As a beginner and wanting to learn how to run properly from the get go- this is interesting and helpful. I’m all about reducing injuries through smart training. Thanks!
Great video, thanks for it. I start running pretty much every year again till I have an injury because of the lack of warming up. This really looks great to implement. I have no problems running 15k in a decent speed but I want to make longer and more difficult runs soon. I am focussing on a IronMan in 2020 so I have to build it up.
Thank you! I've been running for a while but never knew how to properly warm up. I'd do just like u said and use the 1 st mile to warm up. Gonna try this today.
My sarratus anterior always gets pulling after running if I don’t warm up. I find jumping jacks and burpees helps me warm up. Full body warm up is the best 👍🏼
Not more than 10-15 minutes, depending on the length of your main workout/run! Remember that the more in depth and effective the warm up is....the faster and more efficient the run will be!
The Run Experience - what you fail to point out is that, to effectively warm up, you need to activate large muscle groups, but not too energetically and for long enough to generate significant heat in the muscles. Hence the recommendation to warmup for at least 5-10 minutes, doing something like jogging on the spot or slow running, with the attention on technique rather than power.
I've got to thank you!!! I followed your warm up to the letter. I looked a bit silly waddling like a duck and warming up for about 15-20 mins. BUT I've only ever done 10k's before and with your warm up, you helped me do my very first 20k without pain (just a dull, manageable ache). I did it in 2hrs excatly. So thank you so much, it worked, I'll be telling my friends about it!!!
@@TheRunExperience Hey dude, years on, I've been doing your warm-up, or a slightly shortened one every time I run. It's now July 2020 (During lockdown), put more weight on so coming back to re-learn this warm-up. I lost my previous fitness, but with your help, I know how to get it back. Thank you dude, for making the warm-up so easy to remember ! Cheers!
2nd week in . Will try this today. Never warm up so will get into the habbit . Having sore shins and calves and bottom of legs i am hoping this will stop it from happening.
Great video! Thank you!!! Im new to running and I am doing it by myself, but every time I start running I ended with so much pain in my legs that I have to stop! I know I am doing something wrong I have not seen anybody else with this problem, literally having to stop running due to the excruciating pain in my legs and feet, do you have any idea or advice for me? Thank You!
Awesome video! Thanks a lot. Was just wandering if you have any advice on keeping warm after completing the warm up and then waiting anxiously for the trail race to start? Usually I'd warm up 15-20mins before the race but then always have some time whilst waiting for the race to actually begin. What kind of activities would you recommend I be doing in this time?
Totally feel you on this! Try spreading the warm up out or just simply doing it closer to the start. You can also sit at the bottom of the squat or do some hip circles in a lunge while you wait.
I actually prefer seeing the detailed demonstrations of each different movement, since I'm new to this kind of thing. Started doing the hip swings and squats before and during runs and it really helps!
Hey Lucy, we don't have a specific warmup video but we have a series on Achilles pain. Check out Coach Nate's video series on treating his Achilles injury ruclips.net/video/8rDwSBIDhJo/видео.html
i take regular jog of around 5 km ( if i am not playing tennis / football & swimming) & then do the stretching exercise which includes the leg swing, air squat etc. It suits me. Now my question is is it ok or i have t change the process.
I've just taken up running and my endurance is absolutely terrible. I wanted to look up some videos to see if there's a better warming up for me to ensure I perform better when I actually run. This video looked promising, but then step 1 is "jog easy for 5-10 minutes". And that's where I turned it off. I can't jog for even 5 minutes, no matter how slow. That's my entire workout, trying to jog for longer than 2 minutes. Last time I went, I did an adequate warming up as far as I thought, and I could only jog slowly for 1 minute and 35 seconds before being out of breath. I walked for a bit until my breathing was relaxed again, tried again, this time only holding out 1 minute and 26 seconds. It took well over 10 minutes for my heart rate to drop below 100. So who knows any warming up exercises that for me aren't equivalent to the workout itself? I'm 1.74 (5'8,5"-ish) and about 72 kilos (what's that, like little over 160lbs or something?), so not overweight. Help :')
Hi Merel! We have lots of beginner runner videos on our channel that would be right up your alley and get you past the "jogging for 5 minutes" section. Check them out in our Beginner Running playlist!
Great video, great attitude, not even a drop of the common "Douche Bro" sometimes you get in fitness videos. Only one request: keep it a little bit shorter, please, because the first 2 minutes are nice but not necessary, I want my content immediately! :) Thanks a lot, ciao from Milan, Italy
I've recently quit smoking and picked up running. By the end of one mile I'm sweating bullets, gasping for air, and my lower calfs burn/tight. How long before one actually "enjoys" running?
PROMISE it gets easier. Stick with it and you should start enjoying in just a matter of weeks. Walk breaks are totally acceptable if you need them! You have no clue how happy running is going to make you.
I'm not sure I agree with the current trend out there of not taking time to do warm-up exercises and just relying on the workout itself to loosen up the muscles. Maybe it is because of my age - I feel it a lot more now than I did when I was younger if I try to do anything and I am stiff - or that I have an old-school approach to my running and don't use it as a means to promote social contacts. I do like to save the more leisurely and intense stretching for afterwards, when everything has just gotten abused. Most of what you cover in the warm-up I already do except for the squats and hip swings, which look like they might help a lot as I tend to have trouble in that area.
No stretch of hamstrings, quads , or calves or Achilles ?? I usually warm up (sort of) but always try to stretch too? Is that off? If so I’ve been wrong for a long long time...
Great video, i will use these tips!..I was wondering if it is alright or effective to warm up with a jump-rope? Also before coming across your video i used to warm my upper body too before a run, is it useless? Thanks in advance :)

For an warm up, I like performing the two exercises of jumping jacks, shoulder shrugs, and deep squat-dead lift-sky reach. Repeating these exercises for 3 sets. I do this with my resisted-calisthenics routine as well.

I going to follow all your steps.
Great video! I will be implementing today before my recovery run. Can't wait to experience the change in performance.
I just did this. It was good! I just started running today. First proper workout in years.
Nice, Sandra!

so crucial! I have sometimes gone to yoga and then ran afterwards. seems backwards but it's a great warm up for sure.

Great tips man. Thanks. Just ran my first half marathon and I'm training for the LA Marathon so these will all come in handy.
Just the video I’ve been needing. Thanks!
Nice. I am going to implement this before my next run. I ran 5k this morning and I was stiff and a board on the first half. Thanks for the info.
thanks! definitely gonna do this for tommorow half marathon.
I have injured my calf two times now and I'm sure it's because I don't warm up before I run. I do have time! Thanks for this video
Honestly, you should check out ido portal for movement warm ups. The man is a legend and knows what hes talking about.

This is awesome! I've always been bad at warming up and prone to shin splints (go figure).
Maybe that's why I get tired quick when running. Thanks, man! Summer may be over. I'll start tomorrow.
Your videos are of great help..thanks
Thanks, Kirk, this is great!
Good time to present -thanks

How long should this last? It is like a workout versus a warm up.

awesome tips . thanks
Good to know! I appreciate the conversation like advice, thanks for taking your time explaining that advice.
At least I always do the first two 😝 now its time to go for all of it, thx!
I do high knees and butt kicks for warm up as well.
awesome - this has helped me heaps!
Excellent!
Let break the pace☝️
2nd week in . Will try this today. Never warm up so will get into the habbit . Having sore shins and calves and bottom of legs i am hoping this will stop it from happening.
this will DEFINITELY help.
Got my feet fitted for a shoe . Got told my leg kicks out on the way up . Is there away to correct this. He seem to think my hip maybe weak

Good advice, could do with a gimbal to reduce camera shake.
I've been running for quite some time. and i don't do anything before I'm running. i just go and run
Play with warming up and see if it makes a difference at all :) your joints & muscles may thank you in the future.
Yes... It is correct. Doing a run with warm up is much better then without warm up!
Many thanks for the tips. A bit weird abt the lower strength, but well try
Love your video. Thank you.
Thanks so much for this stretching exercises. just used them now.

please consider he made the video for everyone not just for you, you can make your own video summarizing this if you want to help to.

QUESTION: you said rest between reps for the stride out, but you didn't say how many reps. How many do you recommend? How far is 60 meters?
Hey Sandra- Kirk recommends 4 stride-outs, and if you don't have a way to measure distance, aim for 10-20 seconds :)

Does a tight fatigued lower back while running result from lack of warming up?
Should this also be done before jogging on the treadmill for 30 minutes?
Yes, warming up before every single run is important!
Where is this video shot at? Looks a lot like Fort Collins, CO
I like it and I liked it.
I would add a couple of the warmup items from the 30 day challenge as well.
yes!
We've always done strides toward the end of workout. Your reason for doing them early?
Just curious where this video was shot? Looks very much like where I live.
San Francisco!
For the 4th step are we going to energy if we have a long run??
in winter should I do the exercises indoors and then do a jog before my workout?
Exactly!
How to do a speed run slowly and softly??!
these are great ideas. also what aaron shimmons said. lol
what if my whole workout is 10 min jogging?
This is so helpful! Thanks for posting!
Good.
thanks a lot
Can you do the leg warm up first then the run?
