  • This is the first time that I have seen Chan-wook Park's Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance. This film is part of Park's Vengeance trilogy, which consists of Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, Oldboy, and (Sympathy for) Lady Vengeance. The film stars Kang-ho Song of Parasite fame and is a dark look into the depths of how far vengeance can affect the human soul.

I loved the scene where Song Kang-ho caught Shin Ha-kyun by putting electricity on the doorknob of his house. Very creative!

I loved this movie and have been watching Korean movies for a while. Oldboy was incredible and this I felt just as incredible. I cannot say enough about this film. I love your reviews too. Thanks and keep them coming. More on Korean thrillers are always welcome. thanks again.

The movie came on so strong in a way that I definitely thought about it for several days, and now I almost always use it as an illustration for revenge and its being cyclical. I found it much more disturbing than Lady Vengeance or Oldboy, and it inspired me to watch all of the director’s filmography. Great review! : )

Thank you so much! Yes, it's a very real film, which is why I think it is so profoundly disturbing.

For me, it's the best movie in the vengeance trilogy, but it's not saying much as I really don't like Old Boy and hate Lady Vengeance. I've watched all three recently and I thought that if the cinematography was really great in this one (though it reminded me so much of that of the Wong Kar Wai movies, specifically that of Fallen Angels and Chunking Express and Fallen Angels also has a mute character) but the more the plot unfolds the more it felt gratuitous and hollow. I'm the biggest fan of The Handmaiden (I've watched it about 12 times) mostly because it has poetry and because the narration is so perfect, everything has a purpose and you're constantly surprised. It's really not the case with any of the movies in this trilogy. I thought they were mostly crass in their vision of the world and their plots are quite predictible (Yes, even Old Boy...).

Yes, I found this film extremely predictable. It got to a point where I was getting angry by the predictability. Though the cinematography is gorgeous. So I'm guessing that I shouldn't watch Lady Vengeance?

@@alwayscinemachic8425 Yep, I don't think you should watch it, it's almost ridiculous, although it feels at times like a draft for The Handmaiden. You should watch The Hadmaiden, if you haven't, though... By the way, the best movie of 2020 for me so far is Bad Education. It's intelligent and entertaining and humane all at the same time which is something quite rare. Watch it if you can!

@@alwayscinemachic8425 Lady Vengeance is not that good IMO, but you will love Handmaiden.

Personally I watched this movie and hated it, (just my personal preference) I watched it with a bunch of close friends as a part of a movie club.
I am watching more reviews and perspectives into the movie trying to get some insight into different reasons people might enjoy this film and like it.
It frustrated me to hear you talk with an emphasis on the things that made this negative like the predictability or "wasn't as bad as other movies" in its gruesome violence or even how the movie failed to really provide depth to all of some of the main characters and explore them better.
But then you also consistently talk about how much you love and enjoyed this movie, in which you put forward your reasoning being "Good cinematography" which I feel is incredibly vague and just very art-house, rather than being traditionally 'Good' cinematography in how it helps Develop and accentuate themes and concepts within the movie.
And you also refer to this movie proving light levity to the constant downward spiral that this movie presents and honestly I just completely fail to see how those two scenes you mention accurately do that.
The girlfriend definitely has some 'interesting' and out of the box thoughts which she presents and it does add a different "FEEL" to the movie than the depressing and morally questionable and irrational places the movie goes, but it's definitely not 'light-hearted' as you seem to imply.
And the Child who is kidnapped and having a light moment even in those few scenes there is the constant undertone of this being an unfortunate and slightly delicate circumstance with the child (imo) cutting through the small and nuanced amounts of 'Light-hearted' feelings that that scene (maybe?) tries to present.
This feel for me portrayed a very one-dimensional view of the characters, the theme of vengeance and a consistent and constant downward spiral of depraved actions that occurred within the movie.
I wanted to enjoy this movie but I found myself walking away from it questioning **What Explicitly** this movie did right to counterbalance any of the negative things that this movie presents.
