via gameranx:
The Birdman himself, legendary skateboarder Tony Hawk has confirmed that Tony Hawk Pro Skater 3+4 was originally planned as a sequel to the well-received Tony Hawk Pro Skater 1+2 before the developer of the game was absorbed by Blizzard when they acquired Activision. Hawk is well-known for his 20-year-long critically acclaimed skateboarding series, and the return of the series in 2020 was an interesting one, with the reboot being a surprising success.
A sequel to the reboot would have been very positively received, but due to Activision merging Vicarious Visions (the developer of the rebooted series) into Blizzard, it never had the chance to come to fruition. The studio was renamed Blizzard Albany and was reappointed as a support studio for the Diablo franchise, as well as many other Blizzard titles.
It was only last night that Tony Hawk addressed the scrapped game in detail when he was a guest on a fan Twitch Livestream, with his disappointment there for all to see.
“That was the plan,” Hawk said, referring to a potential THPS 3+4. “Even up until the release date of [1+2]. We’re going 3+4 and then Vicarious got kind of absorbed and they were looking for other developers, and then it was over.
They [Activision] were actually… the truth of it was they were trying to find someone to do 3 and 4 but they just didn’t trust anyone the way they did Vicarious. So they took other pitches from other studios like ‘what would you do with the THPS titles?’ And they didn’t like anything they heard, and that was it.
I wish there was some way to bring it back. I mean who knows - when all the dust settles maybe we’ll sort it out. You never know. I never imagined we’d do 1 and 2 20 years later, so…” Игры
I don't usually do this type of video but I needed to mourn Tony Hawk's Pro Skater
Thanks for everything you do Jake. Your videos and gameranx always bring a smile to my face, and as someone who grew up on these games, I’m dressed in black at the funeral with you. I really hope some solid devs can pick up the IP, and if they can’t hopefully we get a Bloodstained situation where it’s not TH, but it’s totally TH. Idk, just a thought. Thanks again man, appreciate you
I feel like this is a refreshing coming from you. You’re usually tactful with your criticism on games and publishers but this felt authentic and heartfelt.
I’m upset too :/
Any chance MS come in and just give it to VV?
They always do him dirty
The sad part is Activision has done this to other talented teams like you said. Toys for Bob, Beenox, and High Moon Studios have all been absorbed into the COD ecosystem. I really hope Microsoft can help them out.
The original Tony Hawk studio Neversoft.
Fuck is that where high moon went? Ugh. There goes my hope of a transformers game remake
@@blitzfyre669 They also did Darkwatch and Bourne Conspiracy which were underrated
I came to say this exact thing honestly
its like a horror movie
Man Microsoft has a LOT of fixing to do in order to fix the reputation of Activision & Blizzard and their toxic workplace and Greed if it's possible.
fingers crossed things work out better for everyone
they made excellent moves by making Overwatch 2 multiplayer f2p and doing away with the lootboxes, but of course at the same time we got that news there was also news about terrible execs. it’s always 2 steps forward 1 step back it seems
Worst part is we won't visibly see any change for another 3-4+ years.
Not to add their own studios they are having issues with.
@@spartida3850 they haven't made overwatch 2 f2p yet and you Michael Scotted that idiom.
As an Activision QA dude, I was pretty hyped to work on the remakes. Oh well. 😭
thank you for your work regardless!
From now on, I'm blaming you personally everytime I run into a bug in an Activision game.
@@Kirito_2016 lmfaooooo
As pissed as I am, I don’t blame you sir. You never know what a company is going to do. But the acquisition was shady af not gonna lie. It’s comforting to know that you were looking forward to it too. We can be disappointed together. Those games helped make my childhood what it was.
Blur 2 getting axed, and now THPS 3+4 getting axed.
I need a moment. 😔
Imagine a Tony Hawk underground 1 remake, fuck, that was my dream and it’s crushed💔💔💔
I grew up with the THUG games and after the success of THPS 1+2, I was hoping eventually they would get remade too. ActiBlizz kills another franchise :/
If I could have a remake of literally any game on earth it would be THUG. Sucks man
They better add new things if they do, because those UG games and AW don’t even need a remake.
@@MadDogSolo rose tinted glasses if I've ever seen them. Games are gems but NOT comparable to what could be done with current tech.
@@lolmanyeah1 You right but like I said if it’s done right, because the tech is good but these games are getting worse.
@@MadDogSolo yeah you're right. Vicarious Visions was on to something though sad to see them moved to blizzard
Other developers: “We’d make THPS 3+4 exactly how the fans remembered it, just with modern graphics.”
Activision: “Needs more microtransactions!!”
Tony Hawk Immortal
Nothing made me happier than when Activision lost the gaming rights to Spidey. As a publisher, they’ve always annoyed me with how they do things. Always seem to rush and half-ass most of their stuff.
This man's honesty...
"That's something the world sorely needs."
💯
It's too bad. A lot of fans wanted more. And I completely understand. I'm from the “other camp,” though, that being I played EA's Skate series. And it's also well documented how EA totally neglected that IP for years, while fans were clamoring for more. You just can't trust the suits with a fun franchise, it seems …
seems like they ALL hate skateboarding
Skate 1 was such a breath of fresh air. Skate 3 smells like trash. I really hope they succeed on 4.
@@JakeBaldino Suits hate skateboarding, what else is new. The people who run X-Games at ESPN actually think extreme sports are a joke, the head guy there said and I quote "Bob Burnquist isn't a real athlete, Derek Jeter is an athlete." Mitchie Brusco, Jason Ellis, and several other pro skaters will tell you how little the x-games suits actually care about the sport/culture.
Skateboarding is a crime
It must take a lot to make Jake upset. Activition REALLY fucked up if you make this chill guy upset
This isn't gamer rage this is gamer rightful frustration and good on you for highlighting it!
Gotta love your good vibes, man. Even in a video that seemed like it was gonna be a full out gamer rage video, you said your piece briefly and immediately went on to count our blessings anyway.
I appreciate you getting me
I feel your pain man. THPS 4 was my favourite in the franchise. I remember having a PS One, and going to the local game store with my friends and.. there it was, the 4th game just released (mind you, I had no internet at the time and didn’t even know it was a thing).
We lost our collective minds. When we went home, popped the game in, heard the music, the environments… One my most cherished gaming memories.
I would have like to see a Tony hawk underground remake
Tony Hawk 4 is my favorite, from the levels to the mission variety and the humor it’s the best. No joke my buddy and I were just playing it this past weekend.
We love your videos. Of course we would click on it. You have such a great vibe. And congrats on the podcast. It is awesome.
thank you dude. looking forward to recording the next one! glad you are digging it
Though I didn't play the remake, some of my favorite gaming memories are staying up till 6 in the morning playing THPS 1 & 2 with my friends in my early teenage years. This is of course after we spent all day doing dumb stuff on skateboards ourselves.
Those memories are sacred - pure joy - the beginning period of adolescence when you have more knowledge of the world than responsibility and are still young enough to feel invincible. You may have to wait, but in the spirit of those memories I believe you'll get your 3 + 4 someday.
I was really hoping 3 & 4 remaster was coming next
saaaame
I’d love to hear your thoughts on AAA developers getting stuck making sequels and remakes and spin offs instead of new ips. I enjoy many sequels as long as it’s all about advancing a story/characters and improving gameplay and graphics. But I’d also like to see more like The Last of Us and The Order (insert date here) and the Last Guardian.
That's the reason I adored Detroit Become Human and Horizon Zero Dawn on ps4. New IPs are so rare now. I recently played disco elysium which fits as well
@@martinhristov3670 same. Horizon is up there with my favorite originals of the last 5 or so years. Detroit was great too though I wouldn’t consider it totally original as it used a lot of the same style graphics gameplay and structure as their previous couple games. But it was an original story so that’s a big plus. Oh and Ghost of Tsushima was amazing!
1886
Sequel and spin-off is fine because this will always branch to creating new IP. The remake and remastered is the problem here. If it remake for like PS1/PS2 era game, I can tolerate that, but doing for PS3/PS4 game are just straight cash grab. And while many people complain about this, sadly there also many dumb people bought it too. Sometimes I don't understand anymore how gaming fandom thinking now. Because of this the dev keep making this remake/remaster shit, coz y'all keep throwing money at them
@@shawziiz5031 The dumb one is yourself, in the time between the original and the remake there will have been millions of new gamers who never played the original. Those are the majority buying the remakes/remasters of games they've always heard about. People act like the only ones interested in the remake must be those who already played the original, and that's just so very stupid.
I'm with you, I never uninstall TH1&2 either for the same reasons. I like skating around with friends online when we can't decide on what we're trying to play. Activision in the WORST.
I would love a Tony Hawk Underground MMO lite
I’m right there with you Jake. I was absolutely heartbroken when I saw this news.
I'm right there with you; when they announced the 1+2 remix, I pre-ordered (which I haven't done ever since Anthem!) on nostalgia alone but was over the moon with the end product. While the mechanic felt the same (muscle memory kicked almost immediately), the fresh coat of paint, neslw features, and the soundtrack just clicked as it should: a good nostalgia trip for veterans and something fresh for new players to the franchise!
The speedrun mode was a lot of fun fr
Grew up with THPS and THPS 3 along with the Undergrounds while playing 2 and 4 thanks to Blockbuster and friends' houses. Vicarious Visions knocked it out of the park and was the first thing that brought me legitimate joy while dealing with a new case of Long-Haul COVID. It was hugely important to me as well and I can only hope that THPS 3+4 could be a silver lining of a Microsoft buyout.
I feel you, memories of hanging at the local used game store are filled with the Tony Hawk series.
Also on being a one trick pony...my game was Twinkle Star Sprites, a competitive vertical scrolling shooter/puzzle hybrid on the Neo Geo.
The fact that Kona skatepark in Jacksonville FL was a map in th4 was so awesome for me as a kid. I grew up in the Jax area and when I first played it I had never been there but had heard people talk about it for years before the fact. I later went there several times when I was in my skating phase, and actually went to, I guess they called it a demo, I'd call it a show now as a festival dude, but I saw Geoff Rowley and a couple other pro skaters from Tony hawk and others from magazines skate at Kona and i have a poster signed by a few of them somewhere in the attic. Fun fact, if you played that level in th4, it's like a micro machines or hot wheels version of the real thing proportion wise both in how big the game assets are and how big your character is in relation to it. AFAIK they're still operating, look up some pictures of the real place and compare them to game screenshots. The layout is identical or it was at the time, the big wooden half pipe in the back is like 15 feet tall like it towers over you. Mini street and the snake were where I spent most of my time as a kid. I remember seeing a kid get absolutely mangled on that concrete half pipe. Sorry, I loved th4 as a game but I can't not think about the fact that I've been all around the real life level.
Thanks for doing this, Jake. Been loving TH since 1 and after the Remake I was ready for 3+4 Remake and Underground. It was great having this series back after a long absence but old papa Activision just had to crash the party. Damn shame.
Dude I'm so gutted by this. It seemed like an easy win, the engine and mechanics are there they could so do 3&4 and make loads of money and then a THUG collection would surely be big bucks for them.
I knew the chances of it was slim but I really wanted them to eventually get around to American Wasteland, I've loved that game since the first time I played it on my PS2 back in the day, a remake would've been amazing but heck I'd just take a remaster at this point. Let's hope this isn't the last we've heard of the Tony Hawk's series.
On a good/funny note: I love how your character literally looks like you. I remember in the Before You Buy that you mentioned that you were able to make yourself but mentioned it was because you have an npc face. Still makes me laugh and smile.
I agree! I was really hoping they'd continue with remasters or remakes bc my favorite is one of the later entries, THUG 2, and I would absolutely love to play it again.
Makes me happy to see you mention tony hawk games after seeing you on your channel and also gameranx. I was one of those people who came back to THPS when 1+2 launched and got into it heavy again in the community and thugpro as well. THPS is great as a casual game and competitive complex combo's as well, and for us boomers the nostalgia is never ending.
The Until the Wheels Fall off Documentary was fucking amazing.
💯
I was in the chat of that stream. Was such a good day to see Tony just having fun playing with those guys, but man, was I soon just livid when I heard that Activision just canned what could have been an amazing remake. THPS3 was my childhood in many ways, and to see that revived would have been a highlight in my life. I genuinely hope Microsoft sets them straight once and for all.
This is really unfortunate, THPS 3 was the one I played a lot of when I was younger so I was looking forward to a 3 + 4 Remake
Same. 3 (PS1) and 4 (PS2) are the games I have nostalgia for.
Would love a half hour (to an hour as long as you can make it lol) deep dive into your fav Tony hawks, your opinions on each etc. there’s so much to nerd out on from mechanics, to Easter eggs, to storylines in the later games-it’s a series that’s so close to alot of peoples heart and I constantly need my fix of discussion about it especially in these trying Tony hawk times 😂
I'm someone who's never played a Tony Hawk game in his life, but I bought the 1 + 2 remake when it was new out of the sheer critical acclaim I heard all over, and I absolutely loved it. Such a well designed and excellent arcade-style game. I would've gladly bought a 3 + 4 Remake, so that speaks volumes to the game's quality imo.

This news broke my heart. I was ready for 3 and 4. Depsite not knowing if it was coming, knowing now it was but isnt anymore felt like a gut punch. Need more thps classics 😭
Always clicking on your face my dude, been a huge fan of you for years, I can feel your passion for gaming and it’s infectious
It’s always funny how every gaming channel on RUclips takes any excuse to talk about their favourites. You and Pro Skater, Skill Up and Destiny etc. Love you guys. I would do the same. Great video too!
well, it is kind of relevant?
@@DemonKingNemo I agree. More of a general observation rather than specifically relating to this video.
THPS3 was one of the first games I’ve ever played. I remember my parents would tell me that the blood was “juice” that I spilled from my pockets at four years old. I have never stopped playing it in the literal twenty years since then and I won’t stop until my PS2 breaks. I’m really disappointed that I won’t be able to play an updated version of it on my PS5 though.
Thank you for speaking on this!
THUG Pro is an amazing thing - been part of the community for ages. THPS 1+2 was/is good, but couldn't recreate the online community of THPS3-THAW and THUG Pro. I was really hoping THPS 3+4 would step up with the online part, maybe bring in some cool tourneys and stuff, with andyTHPS and other THPS legends hosting and judging. But nope, Activision just can't stop itself. Upsetting indeed :< So I feel ya man
Pro Skater 1&2 remake was perfect except for the fact that online and local multiplayer still doesn’t work on next gen consoles. I have faith that Xbox will bring us 3&4 with how consumer friendly they are now.
Man it must feel so good to just get your thoughts on a mic and have such a big audience just for sharing them. I have no one that really listens.
RUclips might even delete this comment.
Well I don't blame them, I'm so sick of everybody's sh#t anyways, It's only normal that they would get tired of mine.
Jake, great insight on this topic! I, like many of us, grew up on THPS and being from England, it gave a great look into american skate/pop culture at the time, especially with all the music. I loved the 1&2 remake and 3&4 would be incredible. A THUG remake would be aaaaabsolutely amazing as it's one of my favourite games, period!
BUT on the other side of the coin, the remake scene is a slippery slope I feel. We all crave new content and if Activision don't wanna back the Birdman anymore, I'd love to see him consult on a new IP maybe? (even though there's probably something in a historical contract that stops him working with other developers?)
Anyway, skate games of all shapes and sizes are rad and we need more of them! Also would love to hear you breakdown your favorite THPS/THUG games. Keep up the good work!
Sorry you have to go through this man. Skating games don't personally appeal to me, but I've been burned by companies tanking franchises I love enough to relate. It feels like franchises getting dropped or mishandled has really escalated over the past few years (Maybe it's just me)... Hope you're able to regroup and heal. Keep up the content. There's not enough positivity on the internet :)
I had a demo of tony hawk 2 on a Pizza Hut demo and I’ll tell this. That disc had over a 100 hours of gameplay. Even after I had purchased 2.
Where did you get that underground poster
THPS3 was a unique game - there was 3 sets of SKATE letters, depending on which Pro/Hidden/
Custom was used. They were grouped Green/Orange/Purple in the game guide book.
“Underground” was the best game I’ve ever played. Don’t remember how many times I passed it but damn. I’m not even into skating like that either but they were my childhood
Activision is more worried about keeping all of their teams working on cod projects than focus on quality games.
I thought that after the success of thps 1+2, we were definitely going to get a tony hawk underground or American wasteland remake. This is just sad.
This news is pretty disappointing to me. THPS, Mat Hoffman Pro BMX, Dave Mirra Freestyle BMX, Aggressive Inline and even yes BMX XXX all of these franchises/games sit in a bubble in my mind because they gave me so much joy and introduced me to so much music. THPS was the last one that I had hope for. it's sad that they have been treated like this.
I got the original game at christmas, when I was adopted and wouldn't speak to anyone. and on Christmas I played this with my new family and opened up and its something I will always remember and cherish, love the game and the feeling it brings to you, a great sadness in the gaming world to hear this news
"Protective of the [Tony Hawk] brand."
Tony Hawk Ride, Shred, HD, Pro Skater 5, Motion...
I needed a good laugh today, thank you.
This is exactly how I feel. They totally fumbled it. I can´t even think of how much tiem I´ve spent free skating all my life in THPS games. Really wanted them to keep going since they really did get good momentum and praise and love from us.
What makes me upset the most is that this is one of the companies that done a fantastic job with a past one of my faves and got repaid with either losing the IP or their overall owner merges them. Honestly things like this are the reason I am slowly getting more and more jaded with companies, thanks a lot Activision
4 was my childhood, I’m absolutely gutted 😭
Same. Pro Skater 4 is one of, if not my favourite Tony Hawk's game. I still play those older ones from time to time, but I agree that it would've been so great to have modernised versions of them since we've already seen Vicarious Visions do such a great job with 1 & 2. The only shortcomings of those were the lack of compelling things to do after completing all the levels. Pro Skater 4 in particular has such a huge amount of playtime compared to the 3 games prior to it, which I another reason I really wanted a remake of that one especially.
I remember getting a tenner from my dad to buy THPS1 second hand from the local game shop and being addicted since, to the entire series and trying to skate myself (badly). Gutted to hear they're not remaking any more as after the disaster of 5 I really thought this was what the fans needed
They peaked at Pitfall.
hahahah
Having Pizza Guy as your special was a great touch!
I played 1 through Project 8 and THPS 2 and 4 were my favorites. I don't know how much other people played it but multiplayer king of the hill in THPS 4 was 99% of what I played with my brother. There's something so genuinely hilarious about juking someone out while moving 2 mph.
THPS 4 got it right for me. The soundtrack was also so amazing.
You could make Jango Fett (secret character) go stupid high in the middle of a combo and complete those impossible challenges. 👍🏼
Tony Hawk video games were a big part of my childhood and really infuencial on me. They were the reason I took up skateboarding as a hobby in a small town of Greece where no one else was skating. When the 1+2 remake was announced my inner child was thrilled! I never expected 3+4 to be remastered as well, but now that I heard that this was the case until the cancellation of the project hurts more.
Thank you for making this video! I feel like it’s important because if a lot of other big voices in the gaming community speak up & talk about this, maybe it will create momentum and force the companies to find a way to continue the thps series! Seriously love your vids & seriously love these games!
I read the headline and KNEW Jake was going to make a video today! Cant attack this boy's toys without some HEATED WORDS!🍕
Great video as always, long time fan, would love to know your opinion on the oli oli franchise? :)
I’m still holding out hope that Microsoft can somehow make 3+4 happen
me too, brother. Microsoft definitely has lots of renovations to make with that company.
something tells me the main reason those pitches were turned down is because there weren’t any corporate buzzwords used like “shared experiences” or “live service”
plus how could they *possibly* integrate THPS with COD???
Dude I loved all the THPS games, from 1 and 2, up through Underground with all the Bam Margera antics, all the way to things like Project 8.
I enjoyed the early titles as a kid who loved video games, and the later titles as a teen trying their hand at skateboarding, hanging with my skater bro's, still loving video games of course.
I would love to see a video on what titles made the biggest impression on you.
4:02 this one hurts the most cuz Tony hawk underground was my first Tony hawk game and I’ve been begging for a remastered of that game for years
"I can excuse excessive crunch, abusive workplace, and horrible management, but I draw the line at tony hawk"
What are they playing at im currently replaying 1+2 on my switch. As was hoping the next one would bee soon and really hoping they kept going with remakes for all the tony hawks games. Except pro skater 5 😅
I didn’t hear this and this breaks me down man, I mean what the F**k almost isn’t sufficient enough, because I’ve been playing since the first as well and my FAVORITE and most nostalgic for Pro skater 3 this easily could’ve been a cash cow for activation and I’ve been waiting for the next set of Tony Hawk to drop and really sucks to find it it just isn’t
Can you do a Tony Hawk / Skate game Tier List?! :O
I watched the HBO Max documentary earlier this year. Great stuff. Learned so much more about him.
This hurts my soul.
I was there in Andy's chat when Tony spilled the beans. I was heartbroken.
Shiiiit
I literally live and breathe tony hawk's pro skater 3's music playlist and was entirely obsessed with that release than any game that has ever came out. I have been wanting a remaster for years. Mega bummer
Was hoping to play "Foundry" on this new engine...
3 was one of my favorite. Canada, and the Halloween mansion. I played those levels so damn much. Now I am sad that I cannot play them in a new remake.
Yo absolutely, 1000% Down to watch you gush over a breakdown of your favorite Tony Hawk's Pro Skater games 🤘
I feel your pain, Jake 💔
damn, I remember playing Tony Hawk Pro Skater 3 and having the kid mode and moon mode on with unlimited balance cheat and going for million point move combos back when I was ten. Hopefully they get it figured out, or at least Tony could find a good team to put it together.
I fell in love with American Wasteland as a kid and when I played the 1+2 remake I was so hoping for the remasters to continue up through the underground games and A.W. This just sucks to hear. 😕
This isn't really brought up, but Vicarious Visions was also behind the Crash Nsane Trilogy
Maybe because I was a little older, but Thug2 is the one that hooked me the most! I even ended up drawing Rodney Mullen and Bam Margera skating of volcanoes en stuff.
Man, good times...
I love THPS so much I always kept a board in my trunk, skating with my xgf nephews way younger than me. And I was a huge poser compared to them. My most technical move was the kickflip lol. We did skate with Chade Muska in LA, that was awesome. Even gave us a board. 😎
I wish they just remade Thug, that game did so much right. I remember how happy I was when I got to design my own board. Imagine that feature with the tech now
I remember feeling like this with High Moon Studios, who made some really good Transformers games.
I missed THPS 1, 2, 3 and 4 back in the day. The THPS games I adored were Underground 1 & 2, American Wasteland and to a lesser degree Project 8.
In high school my friends skated and all I wanted to do was learn to ride. Just wanted to be able to skate down a street and ollie over a curb… that’s all! But for the life of me I could not land an ollie. I even filmed myself to try to see what I was doing wrong, but it just wasn’t in the cards. After about 2 weeks of never landing an ollie I was done lol… my skating days were over.
We need to petition to get Pro Skater 3+4. It's what I was hoping for and expecting after they did such an amazing job with 1+2. Plus I figured it made enough sales to make a 3+4 financially viable enough to keep VV working on it
I'm not crazy upset, because THPS1+2 Remake felt like such found money, I didn't really expect something like that to happen again, but I agree, it's sad not to continue doing *something* with modern THPS.
THUG was the first TH game I threw myself into when I was in highschool, and I didn't even really know 1+2 existed until the Steam version dropped a few weeks ago. So to find out how good and fun it was...then to find out there wasn't going to be a 3+4 was sad. Really wanted more parks to skate in this engine.
Here's something crazy. On the day I heard they dropped these 2 remakes I was actually thinking the day before that "I wonder when thps 3 and 4 remake will come out". Well fuk Activision and blizzard
I just want to triumph over video gaming’s biggest villain - Eric Sparrow - in HD, why is that such a big ask?
How do you feel about the OlliOlli games? Since you like skate games, but it is a bit different
You should talk about this on Project Jerk
