Excellent use of stop blocks and nice stain for that type of wood. Well done! I also like shaving the lid to the angle, instead of cutting a dato on the edges for it to slide. That little extra touch.
Lol, favorite comments 😆 People are funny, video is too long, too short, no talking, has talking, too many tools, not enough tools. I make these videos for my self, and for those who appreciate them!
haha, I do have some Veritas Set-Up Blocks but they were around $100 for 2 sets. these 1x2x3 blocks are amazing and maybe $25 for 2. At least they were when I bought them years ago.
Much obliged to the creator of this plan for sharing such awesome work of yours in an extremely moderate expense [Link Here== *TopFineWoodworking. Com* ]. The nature of the work and the materials far surpasses the cost. This is the best offer as such.?
beautiful piece but so complicated for a simple project.......I make boxes out of pine also and people tend to look down on pine but for some projects you can do nice work.
Yea, Some times I will do that, in this case I wasn't working to any specific side so I would double them up and clean up the difference. What I really should do is make a nice cross cut sled that has a proper stop block :)
Stock blocks are amazing, as long as your are referencing the same thing, things should always constantly fit. A lot of my process is based on approximations. I'm in Canada, looking at Pitch Pine it might be a white pine here. I'm not sure it would be common here. But grain that tight is not common! Thanks for watching!
@@heyimamaker Hey thanks for replying - is it reclaimed wood? Older pine, like pitch pine is no longer available here in the UK. The reclaimed stuff that's like 30-40+ years old has that really nice tight grain like that. Either way great video :)
Thanks! I like to use reference items whenever possible. In this case I needed the box to fit a pencil and an eraser. So those blocks let me work without worrying too much about the actual measurements.
Very cool! Oh man. Sometimes I felt your fingers were way to close to that blade! Haha! Maybe it was the angle. Great job with the box! Those blocks seem pretty useful!
I love this wood working book *TopFineWoodworking. Com* . A few of the topics talked about in the book include wood working strategies, explanation on the development cycles of trees, and various lumber characteristics that craftsmen favor. I also provided my father another copy.
I didn`t intend to use this woodworking book, *TopFineWoodworking. Com* but instead curious about it. I had been truly amazed after trying it. It never dissatisfied me in my desire to have more information about the art of wood working. I discovered several topics such as wood types as well as designing your workshop..
Has numerous details in this woodwork book *TopFineWoodworking. Com* . The book also displays several designs and descriptions on the materials used for various woodworking processes and also the guidelines on completing various procedures appropriately. In other words, I`m happy using this book, especially in the process of learning about wood working.?
That herringbone wood pattern is all over the place in furniture shops in my area at the moment, how do you make that on your own? A pencilcase in that would look so nice!
Yea, it was actually a really nice piece of wood. I'd guess the board was 70+ years old, and who knows how old the tree was. It's not very easy to find tight grained pine like this. Thanks for watching!
Nice box Adam. I was doing the lat class of the year and explaining quarter sawn. At 00:10 is a perfect example of the opposite. But as you then went on to cut it into strips at 90 degrees, thus making quarter sawn pieces. Happy Christmas
This was an old Pine 2x4 I created this box on the fly, using pencils and an eraser as my reference so I knew that my inside would be the correct size.
Thanks for watching! I didn't see your comment until now. I think you are talking about the 123 blocks, I have a link on my site to them on Amazon ( affiliate link ) The specific blocks I am using are from Lee Valley ( Veritas Set-Up Blocks ) and were a gift. imamaker.ca/tools/marking-and-measuring/
I'd kindly accept a saw stop from you. I use a push stick when the work pieces are very close to the blade as I am sure you saw. A 2x4 is within my comfortable zone of being able to control the work pice safely where a push stick to me feels less in control given the leverage of the material. I appreciate your concern for my safety.
A healthy respect for the table saw is good, I use push sticks, blocks, or sleds with it's not safe. Otherwise there are situations where those devices can be a bigger liability.
You always need to be aware of what you are doing and what's going on around you. But I agree, making something small on the table saw can be risky if you don't pay attention.
I feel like you made a beginner style box with three times as many steps as it takes to make a quality box. And you have every tool you need to make it quality. I don’t get it.
Hey Sean, Thanks for the feedback, I am still learning and sharing my process. After some time I'm sure I can simply something more complex, and have a better order of operations. I learned a lot about making this box, and usually have a minimal amount of materials on hand since it's usually salvaged or found. I also prefer to make something based off of reference which is why most steps in this video don't involve measurements.

I came here to say the same. That just saved me a big headache.
Screw the guy who disliked this video. The box is beautiful and I loved watching you make it. You're a wonderful maker :)

Really impressive technique. Who needs Woodpeckers measuring kit. Subscribed pronto.

Very satisfying little vid. Love all that block plane action! Cheers mate.
Thanks, Mark! It's nice to use slow tools from time to time.
Simple, mais très jolie. Merci à vous
Lovely pencil case. 😊
Why thank you very much :)
Nice man! Great build!
Thanks so much!
Nice one mate, that plane is supper sharp.
Thanks, Just a quick touchup with 2000 grit wet dry :)

I hope to build another this summer that uses some nicer joinery like box joints.

I love pine! The grain on this stuff was nice and tight.
I'm still using this pencil box today 😄
Fantastic Adam 😊 The laminated quarter sawn strips are how some traditional piano soundboards are made. Great work my friend 😊 Blessings 😊 ॐ
Oh cool! I will need a few more pine 2x4s to make one of those :)
Nice project. My only suggestion is to use a stop block on your sled for repeat cuts.
Yea, Some times I will do that, in this case I wasn't working to any specific side so I would double them up and clean up the difference. What I really should do is make a nice cross cut sled that has a proper stop block :)

Great job! I like that sliding lid you made!
Thanks, I made one before this and thought it was the simplest thing to make.
If I make another one I might try some dovetail joinery.
G’day mate, very useful build, it’s a necessity build for this type of storage application & well done 👍👍👍👍

How GOOD are those yellow 0.9mm pentel pacers?
I love them, I usually stick with 0.7 and 0.9.

Enjoyed the vid, really well done! That lid slides in and out beautifully! 👏🏻
That was the most satisfying part for me :)
For a straight box, there was a lot of detail and care that went into it. Sell this to a CEO!
Thanks so much! I would love to build a few more. I think one with mitered corners and another one using finger joints.
perfect

use a push stick every cut or buy a saw stop.

Thanks for watching!
It's tung oil, I used to use paste wax but these days tung oil is so easy to apply that I use it for everything :)
How is it you still have fingers???
By not touching the blade?
Better hope you don't catch one of your hands with that blade man..

How can I buy that??
Sorry, it's not for sale :)
por que no usa topes, seria mas practico
It's been a while since I watched the video but I think a few of the parts were longer than my sled. I do use stops when I can.

I'm so glad I did not have my headphones on when I watched this period terrible audio
What would have made the audio better?
Way too much work for a simple box. If you were to produce more for a profit it would not be cost effective.
Depends how much people are willing to spend. And it doesn't take that long to make the box. 30-45 min
Boring convoluted..........I often mark wood on table saw with blade turning......especially after a few whiskers
Byvyb
You cut up a 2x4, this is NOT a 2x4 pencil box. As nice of a job that you HAVE done, the title is still click bait.
Well a 2x4 pencil box would be rather large long... 😂
