As Deep Fakes evolve, personal AI assistants listen to everything we do, and personal-electric-vehicle transportation gets more and more valuable, much has changed. In this episode, Sam, Niko, Jake & Wren discuss all of the above, and, how in a completely new way, things are the same way as they've always been.

This podcast is criminally underwatched; Niko is such a treasure trove of knowledge and an amiable personality to boot. It's been a trip watching him grow from a dude having fun making game related shorts that I discovered through FreddieW's work, to becoming an unfalsifiable polymath.
Edit: Wren you should keep an eye on Zapata's Flyboards; right now they're using jet engines and it's designed as a first responder tool, but they might make commercial versions in the future (hopefully not using jet engines). Imagine one-wheeling in the sky, sort of.

23:22 - 36:20 I'm with Jake on those whole google privacy things here, I hate when people use the excuse to say "well I'm not doing anything wrong so I don't care" its exactly those people who enable these companies to push further on these things, I for one do NOT own any of these products mentioned here that has to do with voice activating nonsense, but I also am aware that our phones are a possible target for this kind of things one day you wake up and you realize all your most private, intimate conversations have been recorded, and some dude at an office is listening to your most private things between you and your loved ones, just the thought of that makes me disgusted by these companies but what can I do, they have spilled almost into every single aspect of a person's life for the sake of convenience and unfortunately if you don't keep up as others do, you will be pushed aside in terms of everything, shopping, banking, bills, payments, communication, networking, EVERYTHING. its swiping privacy for convenience and it can never end well and Wren said exactly what many of us are thinking about this 35:41 . but at some point there is such thing as being unnecessarily there for making money for these companies but guess what else makes money other than their product our product which is our data, our conversations, our likes and dislikes about something, at first it might be innocent enough for the purpose they say but once its out there no one can track them down and they can and will sell them, it been proven over and over again. and when you take a step back and look at it, it's all very scary and who knows what will they do next and what area of your life will they try to take over. and seeing Sam and Niko push these things aside without trying to dig deep in such an important issue, in my opinion, is very ignorant and I think Jake and Wren are on the money and are 100% in the right to be concern about it

Just tried it with my phone with completely random stuff, just talking about certain places and things we never talk(ed) about with the phone nearby, no activation words or whatever.. and within an hour got served travel ads to these exact (and obscure) places within the facebook and instagram apps. I also saw a pretty in depth docu confirming the same.

A bit of an older comment for your discussion about assistant recordings. Here's my take on this. There is no way of knowing if someone is capturing data unless you are monitoring your device 24/7. Usually these kind of tests are being conducted using A/B tests across a cross-section of users, and/or it could be triggered based on some sort of situation/error. In order to be sure that a company is not actually capturing data you would have to monitor large amount or all devices. About the privacy: collecting data for future use should be illegal, and a person should be able to know what data and where it is being used (GDPR is protecting users from these situations)

  • @TheMartinScott
    @TheMartinScott 5 лет назад

    Hey Corridor...
Regarding personal information sharing - consider that non-logical correlations between data points can and are used for predictions.
Insurance companies use data we might think is irrelevant to price/score/use. There is information published about how this works, and how crazy the correlations of meaningless data is used. The major store was that Life insurance policy prices being based on food purchases from 'store discount card' information.
This has also been reported to be in use for home owner and car insurance rates, where something that seems unimportant is used to raise rates.
A test I do not suggest anyone tries...
Send an Email from GMail, and in the message, mention that your neighbors tree looks like it could fall into your house.
(This is a specific example where a friend had their homeowner insurance nearly triple, and since they were a data researcher, they decided to find how their risk scoring had increased. The data used by their insurance company came from a intermediate data broker, which obtained the data from a subsidiary of Alphabet/Google, which was traced to the Gmail sent email that was flagged because of the comment about home-tree-damage.)
Another example is car insurance companies often use education level to score policies. This used to be based on college/university and profession. Today, how well you write in Gmail and documents stored on GDocs is used to evaluate vocabulary, grammar, mistakes, along with 'flags' about personal beliefs that are deemed 'less educated'. This scoring is happening today, and if you use smaller words, profanity, and have more grammatical and spelling errors in casual emails you are sending to friends/family - you are already paying more for your car insurance. (I mention GDocs and GMail specifically, because companies like Microsoft with Outook/Hotmail and OneDrive do not mine use/share/sell your data.)
Now imagine all the data and non-logical correlations being used in other ways and areas of life that consumers/users could not predict how it could be used and how it directly affects their life and costs them money today.
Being an open book and having nothing to hide is not the issue. The difference is the computing power and ML/AI systems now available, that takes everything you buy and do and say and then crunch the data to be used in new predictive models, which are then used by corporations and entities.
Letting all your friends and family read all your email and documents isn't a risk, as they usually don't set your auto insurance rates, or your home interest rates, and they don't have a server farm finding patterns that fit non-linear models of associated trends that can notice if you buy kale and xzy brand french fries at the market and also drive a sedan you are more of risk to become unemployed and at a higher risk for health issues.
Beyond direct scoring system cost, like insurance, people are already being denied jobs with this data, and there are some cities that approve business licensing and business requests based on how smart GMail thinks the owner of the company is.

About whether your device is listening to you, try this:
Put your device within listening distance but not in listening mode.
Talk for a minute in front of your device about a product you will never buy but talk about it like it's great and you want to buy it.
Load up random web pages like news sites and check if any of the ads are for that product.

If you go into your app settings you can see app permissions and by having apps like Facebook and messenger you are allowing apps to look and see and record and listen through your camera and speakers and even allow the modifications of harddrives and so much more. Google it. They've made it harder to see now but its all there. That how you get those ads where you have only said something or not even said its the camera seeing.

Why does it read "The pesonal jouney" on the blackboard in the back? Is that a typo or some kind of pun?

(To anyone that this applies to) If you want RUclips to not give you (as many) recommendations on things you only search for once, or for one afternoon:
    1. Go to your History page on your account. (Top-left side menu)
    2. Pause Watch History.
    3. Search/watch whatever you want.
    4. Unpause Watch History.
    5. Continue with your regular watching habits.

Belgian here. The “Google is bad” story is clickbaity around here and the business model for News in Belgium is based on clicks. 1+1=2 News reporting here sucks.

I've got 3 google home assistants in total. I didn't pay for a single one of them. 1 Home Hub and 2 Home Minis. They just sent them to me for being a "loyal customer". You bet I think they are trying to get these into people's homes for ads. I use the Home Hub btw it's super useful for cooking lol.

Only critique pls show us what you're looking at as soon as possible. Possibly have an outline ready for chris before beginning the pod so he can have tabs already open on topic??
My fav pods are when it's 4 of the CD/CC taking to each other. Best dynamic

In have a Ninebot ES4 and it's been really good for what I need it for the price but its nothing motorized is allowed in my part of Australia XD. I really wished skateboard matched the price/range/speed as a scooter but the ones in Australia are super expensive and not that great

love these podcasts with the crew just talking about whatever. Also really enjoying the way you guys record the audio for headphone users. When Jake or Sam is talking about something and you hear Wren pop in with a comment it's super satisfying to hear the voice come from the left ear

1st off: This was a great episode, Im definitely gonna get back into this series.
2nd: How do y'all feel about how much you can learn on RUclips for free? And should teachers of lower level and any level of degree be worried about their jobs eventually disappearing?
