He came home and told me that he was being cornered and bullied by an older and larger kid; he told me that he used the single hand choke defense and "...splattered the older kids face against the bathroom wall!!" Picture how much time it would take to go from taking a step to dropping to your knees by an unexpected doubling of your weight. That's literally how much time I had to deal with it. I'd say you absolutely have to delay the application of the choke to have any hope of countering it.
Those are awesome! those are the ones I usually teach my Ladies. It's nice to see someone remind people that you can get out by just simply moving your damn shoulders! I use that a lot of up against the wall technique. Thank you for sharing!!
As for the bickering, I'm with you. I've said my piece to Rokas and he's since taken a different direction. I certainly have NO ill will toward him. There's something about any activity focused community thou. Whether it be Aikido, guns, basic personal defense or whatever else there's this overwhelming need to "be right" and I think that gets in the way of learning. Many years ago I taught defensive tactics to police officers and that came down to a very simple set of rules ( for lack of a word ) : 1. There's no referee. 2. There's no "tapping out" 3. There isn't going to be another round. 4. Whatever happens is going to be over in less than 2 minutes, usually. This means whatever technique you use needs to be simple and highly effective because your opponent isn't going to move the way you want, react the way you want etc. Problem is you'll never learn what's effective until you stop fighting about who's "right" and start discussing your experiences with what went right and what went wrong when you tried to apply some technique. And for those who think it's all about "testing it in the ring." Well that's all fine and dandy until the suspect pulls that concealed pistol and uses it or pulls the knife and cuts you into a strip steak. "Testing it in the ring" has it's limitations too. Anyway ........ Keep up the good work, Sensei

Way to go Sly! Bringing Daito- Ryu jujitsu back into Aikido. My former Sensei Rick Sosa, (Bill Sosa's son), also included some Daito-Ryu as you moved up into brown belt and black. Awesome job!
In the Japanese Jujutsu community the rear naked choke takes about 6-8 seconds before you pass out. I once passed out by stupidly not tapping out I thought I could break the choke on the ground - I didn't. Anything longer you are not doing it correctly, as it a truly a three way choke, blood and airway.
It's not Japanese JuJutsu specific but the (select few) traditional guys more often know the little subtle bits that make these things work significantly better :)

We have a kata of techniques that practice all the chokes, both standing up and on the ground, that were passed down so after a while we got quite good at the different chokes. I remember we had a guy who was really bad at all the chokes but after working with him two night a weeks for about two months got very good surprisingly so. I would imagine that the guys most proficient at the different type of chokes would be the Kosen Judo mob ... I find those guys scary.
Great video once again, but please, try to keep down the angry rants, because they completely undermine your statement of you not caring and maybe, if I´m really honest they remind me of my dysfunctional family seconds before the next disaster... that´s not a good foundation to get a point across.

About the rear naked choke. The advice I found online from both BJJ and other styles that "don't work" is that you grab the hand in the back and pull it and after that you can grab the hand in the front and pull it. You can grab anything. You can grab the fingers if you can/want to.
I think it's timeless, when have you seen a statue erected for a critic. I like what you do Sensi and agree with your tactics "Street Fighting Aikido" the "Traditional Aikido" community criticized me too but its very effective hope to meet you someday.
Great methods. Moat are taught in moat martial arts classes. Good to see the basics taught. Some new moves for me. And, the great thing about these moves is it is not based on how strong the other person is, or how big they are. It will work for most disadvantage ymone will have against another. Most of the moves should be simple for anyone to learn from this video. There are a few finer points si may miss which will make it work better. Though even without knowing those finer aspect it should still woek cery well.
You have up to 6 seconds before blackout when the rear-naked choke is applied at full force without interruption to counter or get out. Usually when its applied we fall to our backs to lock it in. It leaves you vunerable for a buddy assault if they have some but otherwise the person the chokes being applied to 95% of the time is done.

In the Marines I saw guys out in 3 to 5 with the RNC and others take a choke for a minute +. But yes, when applied text book, it's damn quick. I recommend looking at other options for that choke. E.g. that choke loses a great deal of leverage if the hand on the head is disabled. Didn't you do a video where you focused on that hand as a counter?
There's no exact number of seconds before the lights fade because it depends on the choker's strength relative to the victim's neck muscle strength.6 seconds is an accurate average but you can give or take a second based on various other factors.With the rear naked choke it needs to be stressed that although there are things you can try that might work nothing is guaranteed.

Here is the question I want to ask all mature martial artists when they try to convince me how they are the best MA. A Question Rory Miller asked me. Good video! I would say that you have to get your base immediately as well as pull down on their arm a little l off of ones throat. Then the one you demonstrated where you step behind perhaps after a flip kick to the groin works well. Ive seen it don where you fall back to the ground with them. Their head smashing the ground. The issues with those who show pealing the fingers off of ones head is that an experienced person will make fists so you can’t and by the time you discover that your about out. 😎
4-5 sec. before you blackout if the rear naked choke is applied 100%. At training my Master calls 21,22,23,24,25,26,27,28,29,30 just in case someone needs a little bit more time for blackout ;-) On the Street be prepared. don`t get down or choked.

I have never met anyone from Aikido, MMA, BJJ, Boxing, Muay Thai or Wrestling that talks shit about Aikido, so as long as it is not happening in the real world, all the keyboard warriors and youtube-jitsu fighters can do as they please. Rear naked choke, fight the back hand first (if they are trained) if not that side step toss is pretty viable I've seen people go out as fast as 3 sec from a well applied RNC. guillotine immediate defense is to look up The choke is much less effective as well as most times they will not be able to to finish it before you get your head out
I used to always grab the choking hand with both of my hands. They still get you whether they're trained of not. The second hand is the real threat. If you can grab those fingers before he snakes it around your head, your chances are better. But of course the muscle bound guys can still put you out with one arm. 😂

The aikido comment about everyone supporting each other is valid. And martial artists generally are poor at this. Quality is quality, right is right wrong is wrong. Personally I think the critique video could have been shelved, your choice, no disrespect meant, I stand by my commets. The work you do is generally mis understood because you pause to show the technique. Dammed if you do dammed if you don't. If you just went for it, people would say the uke are throwing them self. I like watching what you do from a self defense point of view. I also watch traditional videos for seeing the basics. Thank you as always.
Master Ken would be proud of all the groin strikes :) Great video, do you have any principles relating to reacting before these things get fully consolidated? Front double-hand choke for example, reacting to the arms coming in before they get contact or full grip? Pretty much learning to react to touch/contact of the attacker from those you can't see from the front...chin to chest if you can, reducing the likelhood of an actual strangle even if they get consolidated...you don't need to worry about what those hands are going to do, only that they are coming towards you and you don't want them to connect or grip. Might have a play with some of these ideas this week, there are strong similarities to what we already practice, I want to see how our principles work in :) I also got anal and Googled choke vs. strangle - seemingly a choke is only ever an internal obstruction (e.g. something stuck in your throat), a strangle is anything externally applied whether it constricts airways and/or blood flow. That was my lesson today, as I previously thought chokes were airway, strangles were blood flow related.
Yeah, that was nasty. Just gotta be careful if he's really digging those fingers in, it might cost you your adams apple, that shit gets dislocated way too easily. Though his fingers will probably let go if his elbow is being extended like that.

Lenny I agree with you the Aikido community should be supportive of one another because we all do and practice the same art, a little difference on how certain techniques are done but the concept is the same, but some show that they are arrogant, no matter what reason they study Aikido for either peace and harmony or for self defense they are again doing the same art, the thing they should do is learn from other Aikidoka how to make their Aikido work in and outside the dojo. What I don't appreciate is the bashing from the other arts especially BJJ or Mma, first because mma is done in a ring in a controlled atmosphere with a referee and BJJ is also done one on one on the ground, they both wouldn't work on the street in the 21st century. I seen plenty of so called people who get their ass handed to them in a street fight by multiple attackers at least in Aikido we train attacks against multiple attackers and rarely on the ground (if need be we can defend from the ground and quickly get up). Thank you Lenny for being blunt and make it evident that Aikido needs to be taken into the 21st century and try to adopt it to every situation. Domo Arigato
I've trained AIKIDO for over 20 years .I have only ever seen anyone train attacks in a handful of dojos . Don't fall into the trap of believing aikidoka practice attacks . From what I've seen of tenshin AIKIDO they have good solid attacks . I trained in a rather unique class where the instructor was a 4th Dan Tomiki AIKIDO and a 4th Dan yoshinkan AIKIDO. We had good attacks and full resistance with judo style grappling we called randori. We knew what worked and what didn't. Other aikido clubs when we attended courses thought we were too aggressive , definitely not cultured and funniest of all when there techniques didn't work . Or they couldn't block or avoid an attack . They would say the fault was with us ? We were too strong , not soft enough , to aggressive etc etc. You've got to worry about a system when high grades can only counter you if you grab a certain way or punch a certain way . Not to mention they can only throw if you run around for them ready to be thrown . No AIKIDO (Unless you've made significant changes) does not practice attacks well or multiple attack with any common sense
@@RandAlthor939 , I agree that in certain so called traditional Aikido dojos that is the way they practice, i have been practicing, studying and teaching Aikido for the past 26 years and in my dojo we try to make the attacks as real as possible and adopt Aikido techniques for the street like multiple punches, kicks, ground, knife, gun and multiple attackers. But as you know the attacks in the street are unpredictable. So try to train as best you can to help yourself in real life. I agree that in certain Aikido dojos they practice what O'Sensei taught before his death for the time in which they lived, today it is different. I have seen the ignorance of the Aikido community in 26 years and I think that wasn't what O'Sensei wanted but for Aikido to advance with the times and the harmony part is for the self. What Lenny does I highly commend him for it, I think Rokas feels betrayed by his Aikido and is looking for an alternative maybe to inter grade with Aikido or form his own style Aikido but if you look at the history of Aikido and Bjj they both come from judo and Jujitsu, main differences one does it standing and the other on the ground.

In the Marines I saw guys out in 3 to 5 with the RNC and others take a choke for a minute +. But yes, when applied text book, it's damn quick. I recommend looking at other options for that choke. E.g. that choke loses a great deal of leverage if the hand on the head is disabled. Didn't you do a video where you focused on that hand as a counter?

There's no exact number of seconds before the lights fade because it depends on the choker's strength relative to the victim's neck muscle strength.6 seconds is an accurate average but you can give or take a second based on various other factors.With the rear naked choke it needs to be stressed that although there are things you can try that might work nothing is guaranteed.

Excellent vid! Common sense!!!! Im tired of the drama and nonsense in the MA community. Here is the question I want to ask all mature martial artists when they try to convince me how they are the best MA. A Question Rory Miller asked me. "If someone you personally cared about that was close to you was going to another country or somewhere very dangerous and you had 1 hour to teach them how to protect themselves, what would you teach them? 2 hours? 4? 10? 6 weeks etc." (He finished and said "THATS what your curriculum should be".) So not Aikido, not BJJ not TKD or whatever, I think there is blind ego attached to all of it (I'm not saying the don't work but it will all become stylized in the dojo). Like you say, common sense. Show me more common sense please!

Good video! I would say that you have to get your base immediately as well as pull down on their arm a little l off of ones throat. Then the one you demonstrated where you step behind perhaps after a flip kick to the groin works well. Ive seen it don where you fall back to the ground with them. Their head smashing the ground. The issues with those who show pealing the fingers off of ones head is that an experienced person will make fists so you can’t and by the time you discover that your about out. 😎

4-5 sec. before you blackout if the rear naked choke is applied 100%. At training my Master calls 21,22,23,24,25,26,27,28,29,30 just in case someone needs a little bit more time for blackout ;-) On the Street be prepared. don`t get down or choked.

I have never met anyone from Aikido, MMA, BJJ, Boxing, Muay Thai or Wrestling that talks shit about Aikido, so as long as it is not happening in the real world, all the keyboard warriors and youtube-jitsu fighters can do as they please. I've seen people go out as fast as 3 sec from a well applied RNC.

The choke is much less effective as well as most times they will not be able to to finish it before you get your head out
I used to always grab the choking hand with both of my hands. They still get you whether they're trained of not. The second hand is the real threat. If you can grab those fingers before he snakes it around your head, your chances are better. But of course the muscle bound guys can still put you out with one arm. 😂

The aikido comment about everyone supporting each other is valid. And martial artists generally are poor at this. Quality is quality, right is right wrong is wrong. Personally I think the critique video could have been shelved, your choice, no disrespect meant, I stand by my commets. The work you do is generally mis understood because you pause to show the technique. Dammed if you do dammed if you don't. If you just went for it, people would say the uke are throwing them self. I like watching what you do from a self defense point of view. I also watch traditional videos for seeing the basics. Thank you as always.

Great video, do you have any principles relating to reacting before these things get fully consolidated? Front double-hand choke for example, reacting to the arms coming in before they get contact or full grip? Pretty much learning to react to touch/contact of the attacker from those you can't see from the front...chin to chest if you can, reducing the likelhood of an actual strangle even if they get consolidated...you don't need to worry about what those hands are going to do, only that they are coming towards you and you don't want them to connect or grip.
Might have a play with some of these ideas this week, there are strong similarities to what we already practice, I want to see how our principles work in :)
I also got anal and Googled choke vs. strangle - seemingly a choke is only ever an internal obstruction (e.g. something stuck in your throat), a strangle is anything externally applied whether it constricts airways and/or blood flow. That was my lesson today, as I previously thought chokes were airway, strangles were blood flow related.

Lenny I agree with you the Aikido community should be supportive of one another because we all do and practice the same art, a little difference on how certain techniques are done but the concept is the same, but some show that they are arrogant, no matter what reason they study Aikido for either peace and harmony or for self defense they are again doing the same art, the thing they should do is learn from other Aikidoka how to make their Aikido work in and outside the dojo. What I don't appreciate is the bashing from the other arts especially BJJ or Mma, first because mma is done in a ring in a controlled atmosphere with a referee and BJJ is also done one on one on the ground, they both wouldn't work on the street in the 21st century. I seen plenty of so called people who get their ass handed to them in a street fight by multiple attackers at least in Aikido we train attacks against multiple attackers and rarely on the ground (if need be we can defend from the ground and quickly get up). Thank you Lenny for being blunt and make it evident that Aikido needs to be taken into the 21st century and try to adopt it to every situation. Domo Arigato
I've trained AIKIDO for over 20 years .I have only ever seen anyone train attacks in a handful of dojos .
Don't fall into the trap of believing aikidoka practice attacks .
From what I've seen of tenshin AIKIDO they have good solid attacks .
I trained in a rather unique class where the instructor was a 4th Dan Tomiki AIKIDO and a 4th Dan yoshinkan AIKIDO.
We had good attacks and full resistance with judo style grappling we called randori.
We knew what worked and what didn't.
Other aikido clubs when we attended courses thought we were too aggressive , definitely not cultured and funniest of all when there techniques didn't work . Or they couldn't block or avoid an attack .
They would say the fault was with us ?
We were too strong , not soft enough , to aggressive etc etc.
You've got to worry about a system when high grades can only counter you if you grab a certain way or punch a certain way .
Not to mention they can only throw if you run around for them ready to be thrown .
No AIKIDO (Unless you've made significant changes) does not practice attacks well or multiple attack with any common sense
@@RandAlthor939 , I agree that in certain so called traditional Aikido dojos that is the way they practice, i have been practicing, studying and teaching Aikido for the past 26 years and in my dojo we try to make the attacks as real as possible and adopt Aikido techniques for the street like multiple punches, kicks, ground, knife, gun and multiple attackers. But as you know the attacks in the street are unpredictable. So try to train as best you can to help yourself in real life. I agree that in certain Aikido dojos they practice what O'Sensei taught before his death for the time in which they lived, today it is different. I have seen the ignorance of the Aikido community in 26 years and I think that wasn't what O'Sensei wanted but for Aikido to advance with the times and the harmony part is for the self. What Lenny does I highly commend him for it, I think Rokas feels betrayed by his Aikido and is looking for an alternative maybe to inter grade with Aikido or form his own style Aikido but if you look at the history of Aikido and Bjj they both come from judo and Jujitsu, main differences one does it standing and the other on the ground.
