Hi everyone, This video was a serious endeavor and has thusly come out late. The last two months have been extremely tumultuous for Tyler and myself. As some of you know my aunt had a heart attack and then three strokes following it due to overwork and my family has ben doing everything they can to keep things stable for all of us. Shannon is like a mother to me and her daughters like sisters. My aunt has suffered brain damage from the strokes and the future is uncertain, though when we can snap her into lucidity she's still her same old self which is promising. i visited her on thanksgiving (her birthday) and she was bummed she couldn't have a drink to celebrate lol.
I'd like to thank each and every one of you who donated to her go fund me, you have NO idea how much it has helped my family during these hard times. you guys saved my cousins from losing their mothers house and car, etc etc. this is an amazing community and i love you guys.
-Mike
Please talk about the filler episode having to do with tenma and dieter meeting this old couple who helps them as there on the run but the old man didn’t mine despite knowing that’s he was wanted
Why is Alex Jones a Nazi?
I think you left out the fact that Johan was not the one abused, it was supposedly his sister who survived the event and told Johan about it, causing him to think he went through it and she was the one their mother "threw to the wolves" so to speak, as she was trying to give them Johan, but mistakenly got confused and gave his sister instead.
@@joksimradovic4040 He isn't lol. Hitler was totally a left winger though. A failed artist, vegetarian, socialist that hated jews and suppressed his opposition. Sounds like an average, censorious, leftist shit bird. I love how he squeezed in " National Socialism has nothing to so with REAL Socialism" lol yeah okay. All centralized tyranny is left wing.
Are you dumb enough to think Trump had anything to do with Nazis?
“You’ve realized it by now, haven’t you? The only thing people are equal in… is death.” This anime rattled me to my core, but I will never forget that moment.
And it hilarious as to how nobody realizes that til reality smacks them in the face
You say that... but the pyramids and legends exist so death isn't equal. We may all die, but there is a kind of immortality for the exceptional even of you're just exceptionally lucky.
It's not so much whether or not we are all equal in death.
But death is the only equality humanity can offer itself, and reasonably achieve.
Remember, kids - "fairness" is how a tyrant labels his own self-supposed authority, in order to sell it to the masses. Food for thought.
@@KermRiv What pyramids?
@@KermRiv well sure but that only matters to the living, which is the whole idea, humans are only equal in death because once you die that's it there's nothing else for you, sure you may leave a legacy behind but that really has no meaning for YOU once you're dead
"Johan is a nihilistic runaway trolley" is one of the best phrases I've ever heard
18:38 perfect tune choice!
i’ll never forget when anna/nina met the assassin and he says “killing people is easy, you just have to forget the taste of sugar.” meaning doing wrong things or forgetting your morals is easy, just abandon what you like or what makes you human. it’s much more deeper than i typed but it was just amazing.
That line stood with me also hahah from Netherlands
My jaw dropped the first time I watched that episode
I really like the intro in the anime. It's a dark, gloomy, slow looming sound. Like you are wading through a swamp. It fits perfectly
The outro is still haunting to think about. The nameless monster does something to the hair on my arms every time.
It made me think it was a fantasy or a supernatural anime when I first saw the intro honestly. This was before I had watched an episode and only heard my brother mention it in passing at a con. It's one of those openings, like Bebop and Champloo, that I never skip when watching the show.
the intro to the show is what pulled me in!! its the right kind of suspense and creepiness and i wish i could find more animes like that
My father is a retired general surgeon, practiced medicine for over 40 years, and one of the things that drove him to retire was this exact kind of Business of Medicine for the Prestige attitude, and the hospital he took ER call for became a strictly FOR PROFIT institution. He didn't take on a patient that turned into a serial killer though.
Well you don't know that for sure (joking)
@@eleboyele1302 I may have turned into a violently stoic, misanthropic hobby craftsman turned cattleman but I'm not crazy.
He turned into Dr.Black Jack a surgeon with the hands of God nah but seriously sad 2 hear this TBH dunno what 2 say bro 🙏♥️
Well we are all almost garunteed to meet a serial killer at some point of our life so who knows maybe he did treat one
That we know of…
Monster is like if Dostoyevsky made an anime.
As someone who’s rewatching Monster and reading a Dostoevsky book: *Yup* .
@@shienamae5736 Fyodor is brilliat
Most accurate description tbh
I want the Grimmer part explored fully cause he was such a good side character one of the best .
Edit: Doctor and the kid too will be really nice.
Yes, The Magnificent Steiner, one of my favourite characters
me too
Yeah I know he definitely was interesting
Yes he was sooo good. I cried when he died
Same! The channel Aleczandxr did a great video on Grimmer (and also one on Eva and Lunge), but I'd like to see Bonsai Pop's take on him as well.
As someone who lives in the Czech Republic: 1. STB wasn't a secret police, they were a political police - they had informants, used underhand practices, torture etc - but they operated publicly, didn't work under cover, quite the opposite actually, they made their raids wearing uniforms and blasting sirens.
2. They DEFINITELY don't exist anymore in any capacity. Despite their attempts to stop this, a full list of their members and informants was made public and you need to prove you were not a member to hold any kind of job that requires a security clearance, like our current secret service, for example. Besides that, an average member of STB would be long past their retirement age for decades now.
Thanks friend. You saved me a Google deep dive.
Not yet. I know about one that still lives. It's only been 32 years so far, so a person in their thirties when it all ended would be sixty-something right now.
@@stanislavzoldak2198 True, there's definitely a couple of them still around, even in high places.
But you gotta remember, the socialist regime was pretty gerontocentric, an average STB officer would be around 50 then, so over 80 now.
It's mostly just small fries or informants today.
Y'all need to go into these characters soon my g;
-Tenma
-Johan
-Nina
-DETER THE MADDEST LAD
-tbh, that one guy that was supposed to be Johan's apprentice
-MAX THE CHAD
-Ava
-THE BABY (maybe Patreon exclusive)
MOST DEFINITELY ROBERTO HOW COULD I FORGET
Pls do grimmer
I forgot Roberto in my list too wtf
I finished Monster for the first time almost exactly one year ago, and a part of me is sad at that fact, knowing that there may never be another anime that makes me feel anything in quite the same way. The progression of the story, the themes, the nature of these brutally human characters, Johan included, and above all, the lack of ✨anime✨ in this anime. Thank God. It's a once-in-an-era anime series, the likes of which are seemingly long past us.
It is the only anime besides HunterXHunter which I have given an honorary 10/10, not because it's perfect, but because it puts the 9/10's to shame.
Have a read of 20th century boys if you haven't done so
Honestly Nina is the only character I kinda didn’t care for
There is Gintama as well and Yu Yu Hukasho of course
@@Grm0xlr2xD Believe me, I have.
The fact that this is from 2004 and it's better than most of the TV shows and movies we watch today shows how great it is.
This series literally puts into perspective and solidifies the quote “Truth is stranger than fiction, but it is because Fiction is obliged to stick to possibilities; Truth isn't.” Mentally preparing myself before diving into the manga, still recovering to this day from Oyasumi Punpun; which has brought me an insurmountable amount of turmoil and continuous evaluation of my life up to this point. Hoping that you guys mentally prepare yourselves first before consuming these types of media too.
Great work, Bonsai Pop. You continue to fuel my thirst of philosophy through your recommendations.
I've only seen glimpses of Oyasumi but oh God it seems like alot.
@@generaljeneral7503 I guess I shouldn’t be asking you then, but what is it about exactly?
Wow, very true "strange but true" I guess
@@viderevero1338 it's about a boy named Punpun, who you see grow up.
@@viderevero1338 give it a read! You won't regret it, but it will make you reevaluate your entire life
the weirdest part for me, while starting the show now is that i thought bonsai pop summarized literally the first half of the series in the first part of the video, but wait that shit happened during the first few episodes
anime these days are barely having so much happening in 12 episodes what happened over there in monster which was simply the exposition
As someone with well over 400 manga under my belt I can safely say that Monster is without a doubt one of the biggest milestones in manga. It's on the same level as BLAME!, Adolf, Tatsumi's gekiga works or Taniguchi's Summit of the Gods and also by far the best Urasawa work along with Pluto and the imho underrated Yawara. It is also one of the very few modern manga that gets contemporary European politics as well as the setting - a field many mangaka struggle massively in, probably due to the rather solitary and reclusive nature of manga artists (most likely helped by the fact that Düsseldorf houses one of the largest Japanese communities outside of Japan - probably the largest in Europe, even).
I'd love to see deeper dives into more obscure manga like the works I mentioned above. Especially Taniguchi, tatsumi and other gekiga greats are often ignored by the larger manga community because they aim at different audiences than the teenages/young adults that drive clicks on manga sites and RUclips videos.
I’ve always liked 20th century boys best.
One of the greatest anime/manga ever made
Definitely one of the most important series from the early 2000’s
This is one of my all-time favorite shows. I know I have seen it at least 7 times. The fact that it has had no official DVD, Blu-ray or streaming release since Viz licensed it and released a small portion so many years ago is a crime. Thank heavens it's so easily found on RUclips.
SEVEN TIME BROO HOW MUCH TIME DO YOU HAVE
Netflix has it and I'm so glad cuz otherwise I wouldn't have found this gem
Monster is probably the single best manga I’ve ever read, I need to say that first.
What I need to say second is that Levius might just be the best battle seinen I’ve ever read, it’s like Fullmetal Alchemist and Vagabond had a one-night stand and dumped off their kid to be raised by Grappler Baki
Berserk is the best but monster is definitely second
@@maxbarker8625everyone can have their own opinions, berserk and monster are both amazing lol
@@maxbarker8625 I mean, I haven’t finished Berserk, Vagabond, or Vinland Saga, all of them could dethrone Levius once I see how they conclude
the way you explained Levius has me completely sold on it
@@manuhegde8451 that's fine monster is amazing tho
“Did I bring Faust to Mephisto?” One of my favourite parts
I've always thought this show would make an AMAZING live action drama , it's mostly human on human so you wouldn't need cgi or anything crazy just GREAT acting . Still waiting till the day it's announced . One of my favorite stories of all time .
So glad you guys kept at it and made this video, love to see any coverage for such a critically acclaimed series
Watched this anime for free on youtube this year it changed my view on the world frfr , so grateful i was able to complete it in time for this banger 🙏🏾
It only took me a month considering how available the manga/anime is
I watched Monster first when I was 9 when it was airing on syfi. I didn't understand what was on screen, but there was that unnerving feeling to this series that made it different from stuff like gundum that where airing on the same channel. Years later I tracked the show down and it was one of the best experiences I ever had as a teen. Now in my early twenties, Monster stands as one of the greatest series I have ever watched.
Great video.
To be honest I would like to have a bit of the spotlight if you do more videos on some of the smaller characters.
Someone like Martin, Richard, Jaromir, Milosz etc. I love grimmer, lunge and Johan, but I'm really impressed on how a short span of episodes, these minor characters really leave an impression on you.
Monster is one of the best shows i have ever watched.
This is always been one of my favourite anime. It's hard to find a deep psychological slow-burn that makes you really think and keeps grounded within reality. I still find myself putting on random episodes in just listening to them talk in the background as I'm doing something else. The conversations just feel like it's real genuine people talking to each other not voice actors reading a script. And the story itself doesn't really lend any good or bad moral, instead monster would ask the viewer to decide for themselves. Not a lot of anime to that nowadays
Well, this is is a surprise. I think my favourite part about the show has to be its soundtrack, no doubt the character writing is some of the best in the medium but the music just has this haunting feel to it that just builds the perfect atmosphere.
I just hope that one day Pluto (also by Urasawa) gets the same treatment.
Pluto was amazing.
i hope you know whats coming out on the 26th of this month
Honestly I found this channel at a bad time in life and these videos have helped me so much so thank-you so much for everything
all I can say is ditto . U said it for me . Appreciate it .
I always look forward to your videos. And I'm so excited for Monster to be finally talked about by you!
Yes ! I've been waiting for this ! I watched it after hearing you guys talk about it on your podcast. Thank you ! Monster is such a tremendous series !
It’s a great
@@watchforever1724 💯% brotha !
Is it possible to like a video ten times over? This was absolutely rad as always. Such good work. Gonna go rewatch Monster now.
I've been trying to get my friends to watch this anime for YEARS. It's just too good to pass up. After watching most of the episodes on SyFy and reading the manga, it's just one of the best anime to me. It also got me into 20th Century Boys and Pluto which I need to finish when I get some free time. Naoki Urasawa will forever be one of my favorite manga writers and storytellers of all time even if he doesn't come up in my mind a lot.
Edit: I really appreciate you covering this anime and manga to get more people. Gotta give props where it's due! Keep doing great work Bonsai Pop!
After finishing it a few months ago, Monster still sticks with me. One thing I love about it is the myriad of smaller stories which added to the themes of the show and made the settings feel bigger and more immersive without being a slog to get through. They certainly deserve a video! Moreover, from the supporting cast, I think Roberto would make for a great video.
This video was also really nice.
A+ video, especially with social-political commentary. Love as always yall
Thank you antother great video analysing one of my favourite series of all time and doing an amazing job all together, keep it up with the great work, slow and steady with your own pace.
You look great Mike!
Super glad you covered this and all this is telling me is that I need to rewatch this at the top of the year again 🤝🏿 I'm glad this exists cuz this show puts on display how deep anime can get. This is a masterpiece and I gotta read 20th century boys next
Amazing video! I need re-watch Monster sometime. The moment where Eva gets out of the drunk pen and needs a hit so bad she picks up a discarded cigarette butt lives rent-free in my head and I don't know why.
One word, fantastic. Both this series, and this video. Congrats guys, know that this o e must have been a headache to get out, but feel it was very much worth the wait.
Thank you for covering Monster. I caught it when it was originally airing late one night on TV while I was on study abroad, then the whole series in the late 00s. It still sticks in my head to this day. It’s so frustrating that it’s unlicensed and that the license is supposedly super expensive. I feel like it would thrive on streaming and it had a well-executed dub as well.
The whole series is actually on RUclips currently. No joke. Most of the episodes are pulled from the Syfy and Chiller channels. My wife and I watched the whole series at the end of October. This was the dub, but there were a few Playlists for the whole show and I believe one was subbed as well.
oh yees, i remember you saying months ago that you were reading/watching manga, im so hyped to watch this video, thanks bonsai pop
Glad you made a video of this! This is my favorite Anime!
Another absolute BANGER of a vid! Keep up the awesome work!
Great job on the coverage boys! This was an incredible series and you've nailed it perfectly! Hope you've all had a great Thanksgiving because this video was was a blessing! Thank you all!
Very well done. One of the most philosophical videos on anime I have ever seen.💪🏿
Great video! The amount or research and effort you put into this was easy to see.
This will probably get buried but I highly recommend you read / watch Golden Kamuy ( the manga is better but the show is still pretty good). It delves into some of the same themes as Monster, like moral ambiguities between people and their causes, and is a historically rich story involving the erasure and/or assimilation of native peoples of Japan and Russia set a few years after The Russo-Japanese war and is about a war veteran escorting a young Ainu girl on an adventure to recover a vast amount of wealth her father collected to establish a state for both Japanese and Russian ethnic minority groups, in exchange for a little money for himself so he can send the love of his life, a widow of his best friend, overseas to get a life changing surgery, versus a faction of the Japanese Military who is after the money so they can overthrow the military that through their veterans under the bus and create a weapons manufactory to create jobs and boost the economy & infrastructure to get Japan up to speed with the rest of the world powers.
Its pretty good and you can't help but see the plight of almost every character involved, even when they do the most deplorable of acts. Highly recommend.
^^ this human knows what's up
You golden kamuy is straight mf 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 (anime only) and it was awesome
I've LOVED Golden Kamuy since it came out, and this was a great summarization! You really did it justice by highlighting what makes it so rich and interesting without spoiling anything major.
great video, amazing music choices. great points. So many good story arcs. It was an epic for that time!
I’m happy they added the anime on Netflix can’t wait for the rest of the series to be streaming
The full dub is on RUclips cheers I've been binging it lol
I need a full monster breakdown and analysis from you. I like how you do it.
Yea just finished video. Definitely about to rewatch it. Thanks!
Watched this series twice and this video makes me wanna watch it again. So glad you are making more people aware of this masterpiece. I loved “monster” as well and feel it doesn’t get nearly enough recognition because it’s not filled with flashy fights and magic or powers completely based in a realistic world. Just so well done and deep!
You guys did a fantastic job with this video it’s a beauty of a work my dudes !
Just rewatched Monster again earlier this year. It was as fascinating and riveting as it was the first time. Love how all the characters, even those who only appear for a few episodes, aren't just two dimensional props. And the winding, complex plot and how well researched everything was is commendable. Shame it never got a full official release on home video. Luckily there's a channel on YT that has the entire series available.
Also, shout out to the amazing opening theme and how unlike so many anime, it remained the same throughout. Totally, beautifully captures the tone and feel of the series.
Feels like I've been waiting for this video forever let's go!!!
This one finna be a banger
wow, that was a masterpiece of a video, you guys nailed it. monster is truly a masterpiece and you guys managed to give it justice. this is without a doubt my favourite video from you guys. i hope sometime in the future you guys also talk about 20th Century Boys and Pluto, both by Naoki Urasawa-sensei himself, while 20th Century Boys hasn't gotten an anime adaptation, Pluto had an announcement of an anime adaptation few years back.
This was a dope episode. I would like to get a deep thought of all the “monsters” in the show.
I second that. And don’t get why no one has caught on to that yet 🙄
I've never heard of this anime! Time to binge! Thanks for another thought provoking video
Great breakdown, keep up the awesome work
Another S Tier video/breakdown/commentary. You're all the best Bonsai Pop Team!
Moral of the story: everyone is a monster. All hail the monsters!
Not me, I'm a Demon.
I want some prestige.
No ,Johan is a monster and we all johans bitch
Yeah definitely and it’s insane
Only Godzilla is king of monsters
More like everyone has the potential to be monstrous
As always great video guy. Monster is one of my favourite stories of all time so if you want to make multipe videos and do a deep dive with all the characters I'd watch the hell out of them all. If you don't do that well just keep up the good work with another anime/mange.
Im really glad they did Monster, great episode guys. Heres hoping they do Ghost in the Shell stand alone complex soon. Ive been waiting for that one since their cowboy bebop anime. Please Bonsai pop, ghost in the shell would go so well with your style of content. Make my year!
My guy, this video is BRILLIANT & if it was up to me, I'd have you break down every single character & aspect of this anime & I'd watch every second of them all!!! Monster is my #1 favorite anime & I can't get enough new information on it. This is the 1st video to speak on the real world events happening alongside the world though. I really hope you make more videos on this or better yet, your own mini series. Subbed!!
Been waiting for this one
Yoooo excellent work! The Katana Zero soundtrack is an amazing fit for this video
Mike, we all love your content. Please release any type of content at your pace! Likes and comments guaranteed
I watched and read Monster earlier this year for the first time and damn. Was soooo good. Glad to see a video on it. I really liked Grimmer a lot. Even the man Tenma stayed with who had the daughter he got from killing after parents. The characters in this show so well written.
Very wonderful video. I definitely urge people to dive into Monster. You really furthered my understanding in it and I feel better about doing what I can to be less of a Monster lol
Hell yeah, extra long extra special vid
such a great video. glad i found this
The unmatched masterpiece
Finally one of my first manga and one of all my all time favorite manga has been covered and I have never been happier
I would love to know your more in-depth look at Monster, its characters, all of them are fascinating, especially Gimmer and Lunge, Deter and even Nina, Tenma and Johan. Suffice to say, more videos on Monster would be amazing.
I would be so interested in a full series review of this show. It is one of my favorites, and I love how dense everything is. The best thing is as well that this show is so close to our reality. and could possibly happen in real life.
I'm so happy you did a video on Monster. It is the magnum opus of possibly the best mangaka of all time, and it will forever stand the test of time. I think if you do more videos on Monster or Urasawa's other works then you should talk about him more. He has a youtube channel where he talks about art and drawing if anyone is interested. Also, I would love a video on 20th Century Boys. That is not quite as good as Monster imo but it is close, and it is such a captivating read.
Great vid to listen at work!
well jeez, this video goes hard, nice
excellent video as always!
YYYYEEEEAAAAHHHH!!!!! XD XD XD
YALL DID MY TOP 3 ANIME! TYLER! MIKE! YALL THE REAL ONES! THANK YALL SO MUCH! XD
and I'm glad that you guys did monster after the long form videos of the channel. This series needs time to thoroughly evaluate because well...its alot. Lol I know this video is an extension of hellmouth, but I'm really happy its finally here. Thanks again guys.
Hope your aunt is getting better Mike. Love yall. (Hugs) c:
Bro your channel is dope and your perspective is 🔥🔥
Great video, also great use of Katana Zero's soundtrack. To me it fit so well.
Every morning I get up I think about walking to a bridge and jumping instead of going to work, but for real your channel and your amazing work gives me a thing to look forward to. Thank you guys
A perfect 10 out of 10 series, ill never stop recommending it to anyone I can, great vid as always
I love this series and manga. I personally think it's one of the greatest works of either mediums.
It is for many people
Awesome video, if you’re going to do a deep dive into any character I’d love to just see Johan and his whole deal specifically, since I think he personally is just an infinitely interesting character
Thanks for covering this! It's my favorite (tied with Ghost in the Shell) anime! I would love if you did a more in depth episode on Inspector Lunge. He was fascinating.
Great video as always
One thing I have to mention: The english translators messed up the name of the BKA investigator: As a native German speaker, I can assure you that his name is Runge, not Lunge. It's also his name in the german translation of Monster.
Love this series! Please have more! Also Astro Boy comparison please!!
Thanks for the vid
just finished this show before it seemingly got taken down off of youtube yet again. it quickly became my favorite anime and it is 100% deserving of all the praise it gets. i’ve never cried so many times watching a show.
Would LOVE a video on just Johan Liebert himself given his iconic place in anime lore as arguably the greatest anime villain ever made
Imma need that consistency back
Omg please do more analysis on the characters I love them all!!!!!
All the monster content please and ty
Awesome video guys! Would definitely be keen to see a video on Eva's character arc!
I finished this a couple days after the video came out. Great video and great series.
In my opinion, the most underrated episode and character of Monster is "Five Sugars" and Mr. Rosso. That was the episode that sold me onto the series, and Mr. Rosso remains one of if not my favorite character that is only in their show for one episode.
I FINALLY watched Monster after years of meaning to. And I watched this video before and after and just... Bravo 👏🏻👏🏻 I would LOVE to hear you talk about Nina and/or Grimmer. Or Lunge. There really are so many fascinating characters in this anime
Grimmer-san analysis ! Analysis on the fables too.
