“If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” I like that they went with improving an already great console than trying to reinvent the wheel. But, time will tell.
Nintendo struck gold with the Nintendo Switch concept, so abandoning that for a gimmick console would have been such a bad move. This is exactly what they should be doing. Last time they tried a wacky new concept after success was the Wii U, and we all know how that turned out for them. Even the 3DS, while successful, struggled hard in its opening months, partly because of its price. The 3D likely made the system more expensive than it needed to be, and it was a feature that ultimately went underutilized to the point where games released by Nintendo late in its life that just didn’t even bother using it. And yet, the Switch 2 is very likely to still innovate with the mouse functionality in the Joy-Con, as well as using DLSS to shrink the gap between them and Sony/Microsoft.
I think a lot of people just wanted a better switch 2, but youre right that it's lacking a bit of "wow" factor to impress people. Its certainly not like how the og switch stormed onto the market. But i think a lot of people will be happy with better graphics, better overall experience/ui, and mouse support. The problem with the reveal they showed nothing that we couldnt get on switch 1. No insane game announcements, no crazy new features announced, literally just heres what it looks like. I think there will be more excitement once they show what it can do that switch 1 cant, Even if its just new exclusive games, if not other features.
Another thing worth noting that probably wasn't shown explicitly in the Switch 2 announcement is the MMO feature from the playtest program from last year. So in addition to the hardware changes, we might see a number of Switch 2 games taking advantage of this feature to allow more social interaction when playing games.
Weird take when they delivered above and beyond with the Switch. Switch 2 seems to be more of what we’ve loved. Buying it no questions asked because they earned that trust.
Definitely understand why you feel you that way in regards to a hardware update. Personally I’m really excited! Love the concept of the switch, Nintendo has so many games that are great for handheld or on TV. I didnt want to see a change just for the sake of change. Seems like they now have found something fun and different enough from the competitors with this concept. Love the videos!
I'm not seeing much of a reason to purchase the Switch 2. I have an OLED and my daughter still uses our OG Switch. It's a hard pass for me if the improvements are not graphical.
The Switch 2 will have more or less the power of the Playstation 4 Pro. Consider the possibility for third party ports. Consider the Switch 2 exclusives by Nintendo themselves. Still not seeing much reason? 😉 "I have a Playstation, i'm not seeing much of a reason to purchase a Playstation 2." That would have been the same take 20 years ago. 😉
@ I’m 44. I’ve owned every Nintendo system at initial release. This will likely be the 1st time I do not purchase their new system on release day. I understand people love their Switch. I’ve kinda enjoyed mine too, but I’m ready for Mario, Zelda and Metroid to be realized in a graphical improvement similar to what the PS5 and XBox series X are capable of. I have no doubt Nintendo will create games that look and play amazing on this new device, but selfishly, I want more. This Switch 2 will please 90% + of their fan base I’m sure. I’m just going to be in that sub 10% that thinks they could do better if they kept the home console separate from their handheld devise.
As an adult gamer, day 1 for me, handful of games per year is more than enough for me... As a fanboy of your content, I'm copping cases of the console and games and retiring early
My guesses: Odyssey 2 OoT Remastered Mario Kart 9 (in first look) Metroid Prime 4 (announced) I think some top tier 3rd party games will be a big thing for people who may only want one console and never bought a PS4/5 or XBox: Halo Master Chief Collection Red Dead 2 Elden Ring Metaphor ReFantazio GTA V
I do not like how the Joycons connect and the lack of screwholes. It's going to make repairs a bitch and probably more of a pain (which means more $$$ if you don't do repairs!).
My thoughts: 1. An insane remaster of say Pokemon Red/Blue/Crystal era stuff (I know problems with developer rights) is an insta buy. A wild good pokemon game of some sort incorporating vintage (I know arceus but they can build on that) 2. They probably release a massive 3D Mario game. Will probably be a 10/10 as has been every one of them. Insta buy 3. Zelda may be looking at the OOT/MM combo situation and could completely pivot for the next one. Like they did from WW and twilight. Don’t undershoot the idea of another one. 4. I’ve tried to play Fortnite on the original and it’s a joke. I’m not a hardcore player but I lie to dabble. The upgrade is completely necessary for games like that to keep up. 5. Blue tooth audio? Ability to handle a mouse and keyboard? There’s a lot of quality of life upgrades here. Battery life. I’m buying day 1. I’ll say that.
Appreciate you sharing all of this! I'm definitely much more of a "casual adult gamer" these days so a lot of the QOL stuff just completely misses me haha
@ As am I. I only have dabbled with the switch over the last few years playing the best of best. I did love Mario and Zelda, but outside of those nothing grabbed me too much. Metroid remaster meh. Mario kart is fun with friends. I hope they release some insane games.
I get what you mean, expectation is the death of discovery. I would like to add that nintendo themselves said that it will be only an hardware update akin to the OLED vs the switch. Altough one thing I disagree with is that nintendo has done a "model 2" in the past, namely the whole new 3ds lineup. But nonetheless, love your videos
My only counter to the New 3DS would be that we didn't see games be released as "Only for New 3DS" like we very likely will for Switch 2. I'm assuming Switch 2 will be a change like PS4 to PS5, whereas GBA -> GBA SP or 3DS -> New 3DS didn't see exlusive games made for those console upgrades. Or at least, that's more how I meant it.
@GregsWeekendRental not as popular, but there were 5 exclusive. Minecraft or xenoblade to name a couple but yeah i get what you mean for sure. Maybe more like the wii / wii u? But still QOL is QOL.
I think Nintendo made a mistake with how they slow dripped content for smash and mario kart for switch. Much of that content should have been for the next games. Are they gonna slow drip content people already have? They got greedy. Now the bill comes due.
Smash Bros. and Mario Kart both released with tons of content on day one. Everything they added was extras. Both are examples of how to do DLC content correctly as far as rollout is concerned. There are games you can criticize for being incomplete, but it’s a baffling criticism for games that legitimately had a ton of content when they launched on Switch.
The original switch can't even keep a stable framerate in games like Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom, the hardware is old as fuck. I'm just excited to finally get a stable 60 frames in Nintendo games going forward to be honest.
I’m really excited for the switch 2 but im going to have to pass it up until they release an OLED version, once you’ve gone OLED you can’t go back literally 😂 My TV is an OLED my Monitor is an OLED my phone, switch and steam deck are all OLED I can’t go back to LCD 😭
“If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” I like that they went with improving an already great console than trying to reinvent the wheel. But, time will tell.
I just have such an expectation with Nintendo to always do something new. At this point, it's probably unrealistic and maybe even unfair.
You will surely buy it bruh do not lie
I've long since gone away from buying anything Nintendo "just because" haha

You know you getting one bruh...
Mario Kart 8 was only the highest selling Switch game of all-time. MK9 is going to be a massive killer app.
Always up for a Greg video
.....and now for all the obligatory Switch 2 videos to appease the algorithm :P
Womp womp
Every now and then we have to be actual RUclipsrs lol

A Greg video on a Friday? I'm here for it.

Definitely curious to see how that may change things in a meaningful way vs a passive novelty
Nintendo's innovation is in the games. Not crazy gimmicks. Improved hardware will just give developers a bigger sandbox.
Weird take when they delivered above and beyond with the Switch. Switch 2 seems to be more of what we’ve loved. Buying it no questions asked because they earned that trust.
Dude, the Switch is my favorite console ever made, and this one is just a better version? Day 1 purchase.

Hahah this guy knows how to invest wisely
My guesses:
Odyssey 2
OoT Remastered
Mario Kart 9 (in first look)
Metroid Prime 4 (announced)
I think some top tier 3rd party games will be a big thing for people who may only want one console and never bought a PS4/5 or XBox:
Halo Master Chief Collection
Red Dead 2
Elden Ring
Metaphor ReFantazio
GTA V

Oh yesss

It's weird, right? I don't feel excited to pay for another 6+ years of Mario Kart that (will likely) begin with a stripped down game
Smash Bros. and Mario Kart both released with tons of content on day one. Everything they added was extras. Both are examples of how to do DLC content correctly as far as rollout is concerned. The bar has fallen too low 😅
Isn't the "special thing" the joycon/mouse gimmick? I'll wait to pass too much judgment until the Direct and we get some hard specs.

Bro... everyone and there moms will be buying a Switch 2
I'm not, bought switch year ago after going to army, was very disappointed, Zelda BOTW is the most overrated game in the history.
Easy buy for me!
Backwards compability ftw, bigger screen.
Idk bout you but im buying it!
Halo infinite and the Master Chief Collection. There's your Switch 2 luanch games. Just think of it, portable Halo 2.
Just imagine it... I can play the same games I've been playing for the past 10+ years.... IN THE CAR! 🚗
@GregsWeekendRental YES. The future is retro gaming.
maybe in another 5 years, Nintendo will release hardware that rivals the Ps4 lol..people's standards are being lowered all the time
My point exactly haha. The switch 2 launch lineup better be FIRE to compensate...
