i hope people can really appreciate how much time and effort goes into not only catching these losers, but then having the hutspa to call out the companies as well -- i reckon it is quite scary/intimidating for joe and his team to pull off what they do AND make it funny.... it might seem light hearted but mate, there's surely some heavy lifting behind the scenes .... just saying i find this whole concept progressive, joe is the delicious robin hood of scammers, big hug, love, and THANK YOU for what you do honeybee xx

Temporary victory, scammers will be back on the platform in a few days. Airbnb could prevent fake listing by requiring people to verify ownership (or the rights to a property) but they don't because they don't care.
Yep, they make more money if the listings are more expensive, if that means that they have to allow scams they'll turn a blind eye to it.

Airbnb get to keep a percentage for every listing that's sold, regardless of any problems that occur...
It's not their problem...

Just got scammed by an AirBnB listing this week. Pics looked amazing, actual dwelling was so disgusting that the cockroaches were moving out

Simple, when a new address is registered they receive a postcard with a code no code no listing
Then regular checks too, otherwise someone could list a property they no longer own
If anyone catches me selfishly ripping them off I'm going to call them weird and run away. Because that's completely normal behaviour.
Strange that they don't ask for proof of ownership, since the deal brokering is basically their only service. They do ask money for their services, they just don't provide them.

I booked a place in Birmingham in 2019, was advertised as ‘luxury’ when I got there after flight from Australia - the carpet was soiled, dirty & the room I had was cramped with 2 single mattresses taking up space in wardrobe. I had to change the bed as bedding was disgusting, the bathroom had not been cleaned as bin was overflowing.........it took me 3 days to get hold of the owner & after a sleepless night because 2 single guys were smoking ‘pot’ & ‘singing’, the agent appeared so that I could speak on his phone . I had to book into hotel & got monies refunded apart from an amount for admin.
But this place is still being advertised as ‘luxury’ 🤬🤬🤬

I love how everyone in the comments is able to come up with simple, yet effective ways to fix this problem (and all other problems tackled by j- I mean Hugo), but all of the called out companies spend millions of dollars and years attempting to fix the problems.

We’ve used AirBnB all over the world and have only ever had issues twice. Strangely enough both in Da Nang, Vietnam.
First apartment was beautiful, sleek, modern and right on the beach really ideal - except the apartment block next door was being built, and they only work at night...we didn’t sleep so complained and got a refund. We chose another apartment not far from this one, that did not have a high rise being built within arms reach of the balcony. The pictures on the app made the apartment look just as nice as the previous one. However, they lied. The place was a dank, dark, smelly and mouldy shithole. We left after 5 minutes (and after abusing the fuck out of the owner) then went to a nearby resort.
AirBnB were incredibly accommodating (scuse the pun) and refunded our entire spend.
Have stayed in many more AirBnBs around Asia, Australia and NZ since without any issues at all....luckily.
That’s pretty unlucky because Danang is well-known, even with Vietnamese, for its people for being really honest and kind. I actually recommend you to book 4 star hotels and resorts in Danang and HoiAn as it’d be a lot lot lot better and easier with all of the extra services.

My family got scammed by AirBnB, ended up travelling for another 2 hours trying to find a hotel to stay in last minute. A very rare, but awful experience.
Rare, though? The same thing happened to me twice in one day! I had tried to book a second Airbnb before resorting to the hotel. Both were run by the same scammer 😆

What a legend! Kudos to you Joe Lycett and channel 4 team. Taking on large corporations is not easy. And quite simply: how can Airbnb POSSIBLY claim to safeguard their guests, when they do not screen their hosts? Hotels have hotel inspectors. Airbnb should have Airbnb inspectors! And if Airbnb cannot provide that themselves, then someone else HAS to! Joe Lycett and team do this with such great humour! But this level of negligent safeguarding shouldn’t even be allowed within corporations this big. Peace and respect to your team and any Airbnb guests that have been put in unsafe, defrauded positions because of putting their trust in Airbnb’s uninspected hosts!

No, none whatsoever. Also no verification that the listed host is actually the one running that particular Airbnb. It could be some rando with a criminal record, for all you know when you show up.

Just depends on who you get, I once ordered a air bnb when I thought I would have no where to stay that night, but in the end I did, so I contacted the property owner and even though he had the right to keep my money, he returned the money to me the next week.
