1970 NFC Playoff - Lions at Cowboys - Enhanced & Color-Corrected CBS Broadcast - 1080p/60fps

- I used Topaz Video AI to enhance the existing CBS broadcast of the 1970 Lions at Cowboys playoff. I upscaled/de-noised/sharpened/deblurred/de-haloed the footage, which resulted in a very nice improvement. The biggest upgrade however is the color correction I did in Da Vinci Resolve. The original broadcast recording had a VERY greenish hue to it which I've removed, getting the color back to how it should look.
The quality of the tape recording starts to degrade in the second half, getting especially worse in the 4th quarter.

You did a really nice job 👍🏾
Your time, effort paid off.(no easy feat)..thank you for your invaluable contribution..much appreciated at this address!!👌

love the opening music---miss those days
This video is a dream come true for me. Totally remember watching this game w my dad. The first of countless Lions disappointments in my 60 plus years
I’m with ya buddy
Me too!! That interception broke my heart
Thanks for leaving the commercials...it makes the time travel complete
I probably bet the over Jethro Pugh, Charlie Waters WOW. Haven’t heard these names in 35 years. Look at the huddles. Plus the old commercials are gold. Thank You Dave for sharing these videos
As a kid, I read about this 5-0 game and couldn't believe the score. I've never heard of another.
Back in the day when Dallas wore silver/grey pants and not the light blue of today. Always thought this was a better look for the Cowboys.
Totally agree. The silvery gray pants are much better The current light blue with a bit of turquoise looks a bit odd.
This halftime show was better than any Superbowl halftime show in the last 10 years.
Why do all the old folks hate the Halftime Shows nowadays? Face it, what you see for the Halftime Shows is the way it's supposed to be and going to be for years to come.
@@ckendall67I don't know why it would "have" to be like that but it's definitely not going to change. All the game is about now is money.
Yeah I agree with the the halftime shows of today's era really sucks I usually use that time to make food or watch something else.

Like most other folks these days, l just about despise what constitutes as halftime "music" and "showmanship" in the NFL.
Absolutely pathetic is how I grade most of that junk.🏈
I bought this game from a collector decades ago. Your enhanced version is amazingly sharp! Thank you ever so much!
I was 8 years old, I remember piling up the couch cushions and tackling them, and my dad "You make a better door than a window"
Final postseason game at the Cotton Bowl.
Great stuff. The commercials make this even more compelling. Miss this era of football.
Great Game! Outstanding enhancement Dave! Thank you! It’s been over 50 yrs ago! I thought this game was lost and a distant memory!
Amazing clarity/color improvement! Thanks Dave. Your efforts are appreciated. Like Ford...you always have a better idea! 💡 These telecasts have never looked better.
Real music at halftime! Thanks for all of your hard work!
Another classic game to enjoy in the best quality possible, Thanks Dave!
You're welcome Gregg! :)
I could not believe that halftime marching band and dancers, they were amazing, what nice young men and women they were, a far cry from the creeps we got running around todsy
The only shortcoming...only "error" the great Coach Landry made was waiting on Roger, then Alternating QB in '71 was unproductive.
Absolutely no comparison. Roger will ALWAYS be one of the greatest! Bear fan since '71.
Absolute EXCELLENT work restoring this classic era NFC Playoff game! Colors are corrected and popping as they should. The Cowboys Blue and silver vs Detroit's "Honolulu Blue" and silver. Your work is always appreciated and enjoyed by me. The 1970 Cowboys "playoff trilogy" is now preserved respectfully for all to view in the future.
Thanks Dan!
The last playoff game played at the Cotton Bowl .
5-0 not a good game to end the playoffs at the cotton bowl
Followed, the next week, by the final game at Kezar Stadium.
They won the game genius !
Craig Morton's performance against the Lions was so bad it was embarrassing. Yet Landry insisted on keeping Staubach on the bench. He made the same mistake again in Super Bowl V -- a mistake which I'm convinced cost Dallas the game.
Morton did just enough against SF (1 TD and no turnovers) the following week to "earn" a start in the SB. His pass percentage during the '70 playoffs may be one of the worst in playoffs history.
Agreed. I’ve always thought Roger would’ve won SB V for Dallas. I don’t understand why Landry stuck with Morton in these playoffs.
I wasn't even born till '72 and never saw Morton play, but looking at the stats and the context, there's no doubt why Landry had him playing. Craig was a 6-year veteran and had the third-best QB rating in the NFL that season at 89.8, behind only John Brodie (93.8) and Sonny Jurgensen (91.5). He threw just 7 interceptions in 12 regular season games while tossing 15 TD's. He was one of the best quarterbacks in the league that season. He completely sucked in the playoffs of course, dropping to just a 32.8 rating, but Dallas still made it to the Super Bowl, and they would've won that game had it not been for some iffy calls and some tipped passes that went the other way. Conversely, Staubach had started just 4 games IN HIS ENTIRE CAREER up to that point and hadn't had great stats in limited playing time in 1970, putting up just a 42.9 rating, throwing 8 interceptions against just 2 TDs in 82 attempts. Looking at it that way, you can understand why Landry had Morton in there. Yes he threw 3 picks in the Super Bowl, but the first two were off the hands of his receivers, and the final one was on the very last play of the game with 1 second left and he had no choice but to air it out. Heck Unitas threw 2 picks in limited time and Morrall threw one right to Howley in the end zone. At least Morton was in the vicinity of his receivers.
Good points, Dave. The regular season and stats dictated that Morton was the logical starter at that point. I guess I was relying on the benefit of hindsight with Roger’s future clutch performances (though he did lose two SBs himself). I too was born in 1972 and am thankful I reached “football consciousness” in 1977/8 just in time to catch the end of Roger’s career as it happened. My all-time sports hero.
Regular season stats are not as important as they're made out to be, especially when one considers the extent to which those stats were accumulated against mediocre (i.e. non-playoff caliber) teams. When the playoffs begin it's a whole new season. Morton's performance against Detroit proved how misleading his regular season stats were. That, combined with Staubach's exceptional running ability (Morton was an inanimate statue compared to him), should have been enough for Landry to give Staubach a shot in in the fourth quarter.
As a Lions fan since 1970...the run they had in the playoffs this year finally got the taste of this one out of my mouth
The Cowboys also won a game 6-2 a few weeks before this. Every one of the Cowboys' playoff games was an almost unwatchable rock fight. There should be a rule that if a playoff game ends 5-0, both teams are eliminated. It would have been a joke if this Dallas team had won the Super Bowl; they played ugly, ugly football and could only score on bad teams.
Thank you Dave for the great work you do...I was 8 went this game came on T.V. but not in the D/FW area so seeing this game is like going back in time and seeing real football and not what it has turned into today's game...don't care to watch any of it.
Thanks Dave for this, and for all you do to keep us old football fans happy! Wish you could spin your technical magic and change the outcome for a (then 9yr old) Lions' fan!
Great video-thanks! the Giff was a pro's pro--I didn't know that he did CBS play-by play before MNF; I always enjoyed his insight into the game!
He was the analyst on this game, I believe his last at CBS before moving to ABC.
The play by play announcer frank glieber was replaced by Tom Brookshier 4 years later
Charlie Waters was a big game player. He has two takeaways so far in the first half. He really should be in the ring of honor.
He should be in the Hall of Fame. And he should have made it before Cliff Harris.
He is not in ring of honor ? Really?
This was the Lions only postseason appearance between 1957 and 1982.
The Lions played in - and won - the post-season Bert Bell Benefit Bowl or “Playoff Bowl” in at the Orange Bowl in 1960, 1961 and 1962 in what was referred to as the “third place game” by players.
This would turn out I believe to be Frank Gifford's final telecast for CBS. He would of course the following NFL season (1971) would take over a play-by-play voice for Monday Night Football and the rest was history.
@WaltGekko, FWIW, he was the color analyst for the Pro Bowl, one week later.
Dave, I wanted to reiterate what a treasure these restored broadcasts are. I’m gradually working my way through them starting with the oldest. One note: RUclips really goes overboard inserting their own ads on these, with frequent breaks lasting 35 or 40 seconds before you can skip past them. It really detracts from watching.
Thank you :) Yeah, the RUclips ads are a drag. I just always tell people that the ads have nothing to do with me - my channel is not monetized, nor have I ever made a cent off any of my work. RUclips just slaps ads on my stuff anyways though :( You're probably watching on a TV, but if not, some sort of ad blocker can help.
A young Dick Stockton interviewing Coach Landry at the end.
Yup, the picture, in every aspect, looks outstanding…good job and thanks for all your hard work
This was the first game I remember watching as a kid - and I wanted to see it again through my adult eyes. Hopefully my now better managed Lions will finally win some playoff games this year.
The only playoff game in the 70s for the Lions I believe; didn't manage this game very well.
Hopefully playing at Ford Field
What a shame the early 70’s late 60’s Lions were super talented teams. 34-19-3 under Joe Schmidt from 69-72. Take out 0-8 against the Vikings & all the losses of 5 points or less & they could have been incredible. They had horrible luck back then even as talented as they were. Case in point this game against Dallas!
@vincent15641, Your wish has been answered!!!
Such beautiful classic uniforms for the Lions. I don’t know why they wouldn’t go back to this styles of uniforms instead of what they wear today
The yuppies and suits impose their compulsive obsessive and entitled whims on whatever they put their grimy hands on and proceed to ruin it.
Ford commercial plugging Pintos , little did they know
OMG!! Bob Lily took THREE offensive lineman back into the endzone, made the QB move into a sack and throws one line to the ground with one arm!!!! NEVER seen a DT TRIPLE teamed and still make the play. WOW, best DT EVER!!!
My all time DL would have Bob Lilly and Joe Greene as its defensive tackles. Lilly started every Dallas game during his 14-year career.
Donald does the triple team today and he doesn’t dwarf over guys like Lilly did
My favorite part: At 6:51, a trumpet player played the National Anthem. If you listen closely, you can hear that the crowd sang along. Today, the National Anthem has become a showcase for B-rate country, pop, or hip-hop “stars,” and community participation is actively suppressed.
I love the game but man I love you have those old commercials. Just makes it that much more entertaining. Thank you Dave.
You're welcome! :)
Man that tackle by Howley on the reverse!!!!
This is an amazing post. I was a senior in HS back then and vividly remember this season and the “blunder bowl” loss to the Colts in the SB. It was a tough end to a great season. Landry and the Boys at the time had the “never win the big one” moniker rather like today’s team. They only beat that the next year against Miami in New Orleans.
I called it "The Blooper Bowl".
Any Lions fans here inn 2024? NEVER FORGET!!! LFGL!!!
Looks great, Dave! Another excellent restoration.
Thank you for taking the time to restore the original video. And supplying the details of how you did it. It looks so much better than the original.
Dave, thanks for leaving the commercials in, they're fascinating to look at as historical documents.
2:20 1:38:00 ...the Ford Pinto would become infamous for fuel tank explosions in car crashes, even at low speed.
the barbecue that seats four!
...and a classic Simpsons punchline was born.
I would rather watch these games then today's games. They didn't show off and act like a bunch of jerks.
I was at this game with my brother. It was miserably cold. But it was a Cowboys game. Our seats were in the end zone.
Too bad you saw nobody enter it
@@michaelskurski912 Not true. The score was 5-0.
@@aarondyer.pianist yeah but too bad no player entered it unless the safety was in your endzone
Wow, this game was before I was even born. Amazing to watch this, even the commercials! Thank you sir!

Beautiful upload. This is a super treat to watch!!
I enjoy these, especially the Cowboys.🤠 It makes a great game night during the off season. Thank you for uploading them.
Dave you rock! Your videos are flawless! Picture perfect quality
These are great recordings! I’m really enjoying these old games.
Excellent audio and video loved the uniforms and the telecast.😊
This was Alex Karras' last official game -- he was cut quite unexpectedly the next season in training camp.
And he didn't go quietly, ranting, among other things, about European kickers ("I keek a touchdown!").
@@orbyfan Which I think was played into when I believe Garo Yepremian guested on "The Odd Couple."
@@WaltGekko I haven't seen that; I'll have to look for it.
He took it out on the horse in Blazing Saddles
@JStarStar00, He maintained it was for non-playing issues. While he had dealt with the consequences of a knee injury from '70, Karras played throughout the '71 pre-season, and according to the guard who faced him in the last exhibition game, was as fierce an opponent he had faced throughout the schedule. However, according to other accounts, Karras was noticeably slower off the ball.
In any event, the two players who started in his spot during '71 didn't exactly distinguish themselves (though one was a rookie).
As ALL Cowboys fans know, that's the
great Mr. Tommy Loy
playing the National Anthem.
This is the 2nd game of the year in which the Cowboys were victorious with a baseball score:
Dallas 6 Cleveland 2
Dallas 5 Detroit 0
Thanks Dave for posting these great old pro games for us
gray-beards. Many great memories for us Cotton Bowl-era Cowboy fans.
Absolutely great video AND audio quality!🏈
The Lions are back now…finally!
👍🦁🏈
My favorite part is where the intended receiver slams his helmet down as the play is still ongoing after Renfro’s INT at 2:27:46. 😂
Earl McCullouch
What's just as impressive is no one seems to pay it any mind nor is there a penalty called. And they say only today's players have these outbursts. Lol
Also his mannerisms remind me of another clip from this channel. I believe it showed Bernie Casey, a DB for Cleveland being called for a penalty near the goaline. He kicks the ground, then emphatically slams his helmet to the ground.
@@TheAlfrulz, You're referring to Bernie Parrish, as Bernie Casey was a noted WR for the 49ers and Rams.
the ball tipped off his hands and Renfro was "Mel on the spot" for the INT which McCollough knew was the game ender, hence the helmet throw in frustration.
Then there was Bob Lilly tossing his helmet in SB V, after Jim O'Brien kicked the winning FG.
Lead free amaco…when supporting a clean environment wasn’t controversial. What a world. These are awesome, thank you for posting
Great game & video. Thanks for all you did!
Thanks Dave for the videos.
This is outstanding. One reason is Lions fans can see their team in the playoffs for once……..😀😀😀😀
Y'all about to win the division this season you know
@@farhanatashiga3721, And actually winning a playoff game at that!!!
Dave thanks again for all of your hard work on these video's! I love them! I still have no idea how Craig Mortan stayed in the league as long as he did. He is not good. Interesting that you left the comercials in. I was only 7 when this game was played but I do remember the cigarette commercials being on TV. Funny how they banned the cigarette adds but have now replaced them with drug commercials! Now thats progress! Jeez. Keep up the great work!
You're welcome Paul :) I hope to post many more enhanced games in the near future!
Craig Morton was a decent quarterback for Dallas early on and later for Denver. He was in mobile and needed protection.
Its true, he was never a Roger Staubach, my all-time favorite, but did lead the Cowboys to the playoffs and a Super Bowl.
@@topJimmyP1984Yeah I remember the days when he was on Denver more.
Shows how much the game has changed so much today. You would never have a 5 to 0 game today ! Current games are much more exciting . Both quarterbacks completing under 50 passing yards in the game . So many turnovers , less flags thrown by the refs , fascinating commercials . Goal posts in a different place . Those shadows and sunlit portions are a challenge for the cameras . Great job in bringing back a relic of the past. And OF COURSE - the LIONS LOSE ! - ( a Lions fans since 1957 )
Great fun to watch. 😀Plus, Rod Serling doing a Ford commercial. Weird!
This is great. First time seeing Mel Farr play. I only knew he sold cars!
Thanks for all the cool videos.
These vintage games are so interesting. Actual halftime performances, not studio garbage. Young Frank Glieber, Frank Gifford and Dick Stockton guys who all became staples of NFL broadcasting. And am I correct that the Ford LTD ad at halftime is voiced over by Rod Serling?
Yep, that's definitely Serling :)
Frank Glieber was a top notch announcer. Too bad he died of a heart attack at an early age.
@@texasstadium and Dick Stockton is the only one still alive today.
I was 11 and the game was blacked out locally. Only had radio, hard to believe it wasn’t shown.
Yeah when I lived in South Florida back in the 70s and 80s that would happen with the Miami Dolphins unless some radio station or tv channel bought the rest of the tickets it would be blacked out, unbelievable.
This is spectacular
Another great job, thanks
Detroit's defense played great, but the Cowboy's defense was better. I watched this game live in 1970 but after 54 years, you tend to forget the things that happened that could have changed the outcome. What if Altie Taylor did not fumble in that first half drive and the Lions scored some points? Who knows? Coulda, woulda, shoulda, right. The video was so clear, it was great watching. Thank you, Dave, for posting this game.
Lost in all this is the very early Dick Stockton footage, a good five years before he'd make his big break as an announcer for the Boston Red Sox
That Dallas defense was incredible. 20 quarters in a row without giving up a touchdown?
I just looked it up, Walt Garrison passed away in October of 2023...I dont remember reading anything about it.
Excellent restoration
I remember watching this game as a kid in our basement rec room, though I didn’t remember any specifics other than the final score. Not surprising I suppose given the nature of how it went. I love having the original commercials included. I don’t remember ever seeing an ad for Chesterfield cigarettes before.
1:55:09 - Chuck Hughes sighting
ALL HAIL VOLSKY!
If Goodell had any d**n sense, YOU would be head of NFL Films
Little did we know he had less than a year to live.. 😔
RIP
Walt Garrison?
"Im walt Garrison and I dont smoke...
But thay doesnt mean I cant enjoy smooth tobacco flavor."
Hard to believe he's dead now. As a kid, he was naturally my favorite player since I was distantly related to him.
Awesome restoration that brought back memories. Thank you so much. IMHO - This was the second most brutal vicious game I ever watched. If I remember correctly at about 38:48 Lee Roy Jordan flips Altie Taylor like a pick up truck running over a rooster, causing a fumble. Do you have the most vicious? LA Raiders @ Chicago Bears 1984
@thenatteringnaybob8642, According to Landry, Super Bowl V was the hardest hitting game he had ever witnessed, which is saying a lot. Two desperate teams desperate to redeem themselves, which led to what is so readily described as the Blunder Bowl or similar negative cutdowns.
The more I watch this, I've seen this multiple times, because I remember this game as an eight-year-old, the more I admire Detroit's defense, which frankly played well enough to win. Just that the Lions' offense was guilty of too many mistakes against a very skilled Dallas defense. Was as close as Detroit got to the Super Bowl until this past season.
Holding your opponent to just five points in a playoff game...and still losing? That's my Lions...!
The most Lions thing, ever.
I remember this as a tense, frustrating game to watch, with the Lions wearing their best uniform ever. Of note-- Frank Gifford would soon be gone from CBS, taking over as the play by play announcer for the 1971 season of ABC's Monday Night Football, replacing Keith Jackson.
LOVE those backflips at 4:35 from the old fashioned Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders! (I'd like to see today's honeys in hot pants try to do those!)
Back in 70 I was glad to miss this game.
You didn't miss any touchdowns being scored
at 1:07:15 the new1971 Ford LTD that will take you on a quiet drive..... into the Twilight Zone lol.
I'd drive that over any piece of s#!t useless sissy crossover any day of the week!
2:18:14 Munson on his first play throwing a nice cut block
23:49 A cigarette commercial! I knew they once existed, never saw one on TV. I only recall print ads in magazines, and of course, Marlboro billboards.
The crowd quiets down, and sings along with a lone trumpet playing The Star Spangled Banner while the USMC Color Guard stands tall.
The ban on cigarette advertising on American television (see, e.g., 23:49) went into effect a week after this game.
Luv the Confidence theme at the beginning.
The Lions defensive team that year made plenty of quarterbacks look from bad to terrible. Morton was one of many. The Dallas defense the last half of 1970 was superb.. How many 5-0 games have anyone watched? Tough, excellent defensive battle.
Morton I think had an injury to his arm or shoulder early in 1970( I think Roger started the first regular season game) and he wasn’t the same after that. I was in the army at the time of this game. Watching the first half, I was surprised how little they used Duane Thomas in the first half.
34:10 Sounds like character actor James Gregory doing the voiceover in the Piel's beer commercial.
@alvingrimes1434, You got it.
These videos are fantastic. Interesting how the players, especially on pass plays…are all bunched up. The game was slower
Amazing Thank you makes modern nfl games/ broadcasts look like a circus of thin-skinned children.
Sadly, this postseason was the last one the Cowboys donned their signature shiny metallic pants.
A lot of players on both sides should be in the Hall of Hame if it is truly a HOF. Dick LeBeau, Wayne Walker? Lee Roy Jordan, Charlie Waters?
I'd rather watch these halftime shows than the trash they have now.
Same here.
My Dad told me that this was one of the most boring games he ever saw in his life.
Today, Ford (and other U.S.-based automakers) have abandoned the small-car market (re: the Robert Lansing commercial near the start of the telecast).
@billkoenig1552, Granted, but damn, Lansing was very impressive in his presentation!!!
Those Norelco PC60/PC70 cameras that CBS started using in the mid to late 60’s had much superior color compared to the RCA TK41.
The broadcast budgets back then were a small fraction of today’s - no large set or studio or modern press box. That’s why you see Frank Glieber sitting on Frank Giffords’ lap in the tiny press box during the pregame.
