I remember him from Florida A and M University in Tallahassee FL. as students in the 60's, then I saw him on television later. He wanted to make it big and he did.
Teddy Wilson's acting career started at Florida A&M University. Initially a Music Major and trumpet player in the famous "Marching Hundred," Teddy changed his major from music to Speech & Drama around 1965-66. I know this because I am a reliable source. We were members of the Playmakers' Guild at FAMU. We married and had a son in 1967.
He was a very versatile actor, and it's unfortunate he didn't have more success on television. I remember his guest role on "The Waltons", but I didn't realize that was his first TV appearance. His performances as "Sweet Daddy" were nothing short of classic. It's hard to portray a character as both funny and menacing, but he pulled it off.
I loved him when he played Al Dunbar on What's Happening - "Nah, we can't record'em (Doobie Brothers) then they'll get all shy and nervous and say, "LET'S SING ONE FOR BROTHER AL!!" - and they won't be themselves...and we want them to be themselves!"
How times have changed?? Back then it was illegal to record a concert!! Now it's common practice because every1 attending record it onto their phones & post it on online within minutes.
Such a gifted actor. Diverse, witty and warm. And should have been nominated for an Emmy for the episode " Brother, Can You Spare A Jacket?" on The Golden Girls.
