- Ernest Dale Tubb (February 9, 1914 -- September 6, 1984), nicknamed the Texas Troubadour, was an American singer and songwriter and one of the pioneers of country music. His biggest career hit song, "Walking the Floor Over You" (1941), marked the rise of the honky tonk style of music. In 1948, he was the first singer to record a hit version of "Blue Christmas", a song more commonly associated with Elvis Presley and his mid-1950s version. Another well-known Tubb hit was "Waltz Across Texas" (1965), which became one of his most requested songs and is often used in dance halls throughout Texas during waltz lessons. Tubb recorded duets with the then up-and-coming Loretta Lynn in the early 1960s, including their hit "Sweet Thang". Tubb is a member of the Country Music Hall of Fame.
I'm very proud to say that Ernest Tubb was my first big show. I was a Sr in high school, skipped my Sr class play cast party, and I was the male lead. My mother couldn't understand. I know today I did right. That was 1977.
Now this is COUNTRY!
The real deal amen
"Awww Buddy, now..." Three of the greatest words in country music.

To bad All the old country singers are passing away
Real true country, will never be the anyone like Earnest.
The year? 1968, of course! In my humble 71-year-old opinion, the very best rock AND country music happened in the sixties. In spite of the war (or perhaps because of it), human creativity seemed to blossom and flourish at that time, in all of the creative arts. I was 18 years old in1968, about to graduate high school, and worried about the draft. Songs like this helped me get through a rough time in my life . . . THANKS A LOT, ERNEST TUBB!!!
I am almost 33, but I think that the best music came out of the 50s and my mom is almost 56 and she thinks the same. Also my Nana, her mother does too and she is almost 78.
Frank LoPresti , this 80 year old man totally agrees with you.
agreed
I’m pretty sure this is the Texas National Anthem 😊
My Mama's favorite. So glad she finally got to see him in person. She loved him and his music so much. He was, after all, a fellow Texan.
Danced on my daddy's shoes to this one.
What a fun memory Lynn. Thanks for dropping by.
Keep this kinda of music alive please
Omg! I remember! I was about 13 . i loved him and his music! I was raised on it! He came to my school to perform a show. And sing! He had a big touring bus parked there. To do a concert! Cost 50 cents to see his concert. Tours of his was free! He so nice! He. Asked me if i wanted to look at his bus? I don't have no money! He said come in and look around. I was greatful! I told him i sure want to hear u sing. Waltz across Texas! I raised on it. He said come see. I said we can't we poor. He asked me if i had brothers and sister? Yes! He gave me 4 free tickets for us to come see his concert. We all got to go. My most favorite song! Waltz across Texas! It's a most beautiful waltz! I learned to dance it long time back. My step dad showed me how! Great dancer! Taught me how! Old Navy cook. World war 2! Great cook! Cooked wonderful food! He had t.b. got it overseas serving in the war. He was the 2nd eldest of 4 brothers. They all served in the armed forces! Army and Navy! Full blood Irishmen! Rounders! My grandad boss! They all came back from serving. Thot they bad? Got drunk after coming back. Thot they whoop daddy's ass! I saw him whoop thier asses! When grandad thru with them! Sad ! They almost unrecognizable! He made them sleep on the porch. My grandad told me. Don't let them in. No matter what! Yes sir! Woman and children in here. I was a little child then. I did what my grandad told me to do!
So glad this 80year old could live through some of the best Country and Rock n Roll had to offer.
Today's Country is a JOKE.
I MISS THE OLD DAYS, AND MUSIC.PEACE AND LOVE
Thanks Jerry for checking in with us.
Music is the best music
My father in law grew up with Ernest Tubb..... I've heard a lot of Ernest Tubb stories....love E.T.
When I had afterschool detention of my high school students I made them come to my classroom, sit quietly, hands folded on their desk top, and I would play this video over and over and over for a half hour. Most of them never were to come again. Beats water boarding or a flogging.
God Bless E.T.
My husband and I met over this song! RIP my dearest.💙
I'm sorry for your loss.
Always and Forever❤❤❤
Makes me remember my friends Marlene (Dodo) and Neil. Both have passed, she loved this song.
Thank you for visiting my site and for taking the time to comment. Ernest Tubb was very big in his day and his music commanded the Country airwaves.
We saw him perform at the Earnest Tubb record store on lower broadway in Nashville. About 1968
I was eight years old. Simple days.
I knew the words to this song, the first time I heard it. Absolutely the epitome of good country music.
This is an old time great, and is still loved by folks like myself! This is Country as it was, and still should be! I will love it always!😊
In remembrance of his birthday today(1914), greetings from Crisp Texas. Only a Roadside plaque commemorates Ernest in the tiny community of a few houses left there, mine one of them. Country legends do live on!
This is the best dance song EVER...... TIM M. 3/30/2023
Along with "Faded Love".
I love you grandma
Walt across Texas with me was so pretty I could listen all night
Love that old song really miss the old country music
I saw him perform in the Fall of 1958 at Sunrise, MD. It was a small venue with about 500 spectators. He was so humble and friendly, and he signed autographs for all who wanted them.
He let me see his 1956 Cadillac Fleetwood and watch his band load up their small pull behind trailer. I was just a 12 year old kid, but I never forgot Earnest!

Ernest Tubb gave my mom a $20 tip when she was a waiters in Newport,Arkansas back in the late 50's
That’s like $500,000 in todays money
More like $2000 bucks now. He may have had a party? Interesting story I’d love to hear more about tho.
My mother worked a long distance phone call for him in 1953.
That Eastern Europe roots sound is mesmerizing. Their hats are amazing too 🤘🏻
I have always loved this song!
Love that steel pedal singing away 😊
awesome, real country
I went to see Loretta Lynn at the Taft Theater in Cincy in 1981. She had Ernest with her there. As most know he introduced her at The Opry, early in her career. So I had the distinct honor to see 2 icons of country music at one time!
Thanks for tuning in.
Great music.
When my Mom and Dad first heard this, they were driving across Texax from Indiana to California. Dad had a project for work to do and had National Guard training out there. Ernest Tubb was their favorite.

I also have the same initials as Ernest Tubb!
Yeah that is me slappn the bass and my grandpa Alfredo "Ernie"
I was blessed to work with Noel Stanley who was ETs bass player. Noel went on to work with Jack Greene and on leaving the road got in to law enforcement. He eventually became my Lieutenant when I was in the crime lab in Montgomery Co Tx. His stories of ET and company kept us all entertained. Noel was one of the kindest and best leaders I ever worked for and watching these videos keeps him alive to me.
I love Ernest Tubbs,
My Dad's Favorite of all time!
This is... perfect.
A good'un. I love Texas and I love Mr. Tubb's music.

Classic Ernest Tubb!
I only had the opportunity to see Ernst once and that was at the Keriville, Texas. Out door Blue Grass get together in the 1970's. It was a 3 day event and I enjoyed every moment of it. He was such a likable person and his music was out of this world.
Rip Ernst.
He knew talent when he saw it
Alors la , pas de soucis avec ernest tubb 👍👍👍
He put the Yee Haw in Texas music. WALTZED a hundred miles to Waltz Across Texas.
I saw Ernest Tubb at a place called "Craterville" (long since gone) just a few miles North northeast of Altus Oklahoma, when I was about five years old.
That was 66 years ago.
My dad loved ET and I'd sometimes catch him tinkering out in his garage and singing "Waltz", back when he was retired and up in years.
A wonderful song!
Never been beaten - my favorite - dance all night to his music.Might even have a couple cold ones.
Thanks for checking out my site and for taking the time to comment.
Fred Astaire studio practice dance used this last night for a waltz. It was so fun. Blend of Fred Astaire and good ole country was wonderful.
Thank you Jan for posting this! I love Ernest Tubb and it's a shame about his record store going away in Nashville. Such a piece of history. BTW I also really enjoyed your synthesizer playing on those Jeff Beck and Mahavishnu Orchestra records.
Jan , this was one of the best of the great E T,s songs. Thanks for posting. I hope you've heard this song done by the duo Jeanie Sealy and Jack Greene in his senior years. It will touch your heart.
My Daddy loved Ernest Tubb. This was one of his favorite songs. Tomorrow is his birthday. We lost him in 1985. Thank you for posting this video.
I'm sorry for your loss.
LOVED DANCING TO WALTZ ACROSS TEXAS
have not heard that since the late 70's
0:05 The world was bless in 1968 (with me).
Aww Buddy now...this is Texas music at its best. The way it is supposed to sound.
I first saw Ernest Tubb in a cameo part from Coal Miners Daughter starring Sissy Spacek as Loretta Lynn , and now all these years later I am enjoying this legend of the Grand Ole Opry , back in 1980 I was stuck mainly with Disco , now (older -LOL ! ) this is my speed for great music, I have always been one who liked various types of music from Top 40 to Classical-even some RAP as long as it's not negative, depending on my mood, Thank you for uploading this great copy of Ernest and his Troubadors
I had forgotten about this great song thanks for posting ❤❤
Awwsome singer my old freind jack shure could dance to walz across texas
That’s country !
Yes Indeedy, real country!
If this song is played while we are driving somewhere, we stop the car, and get out, and start waltzing down the highway. The best, both singer and song.
Buddy Charleston one of the finest pedal steel ever
Amen
