In fact, I don't think it is necessary to give the M60 to Ukraine, because it is impossible to fight against Russian tanks on the battlefield. I think it is more appropriate to give them T72 or T80.
@@1-761 Certainly all former Warsaw Pact countries should give Ukraine every T72 they've got (the Soviets kept their T80s to themselves in those days, so for those you need to look at former Soviet republics). But eventually they are going to run out of the old Cold War era equipment that's been kept in storage and we are going to need to give Ukraine newly produced equipment. And that means at some point we are going to need to make the transition to training Ukrainian tankers on newly produced western tanks, since the supply of old Soviet tanks that they are already familiar with will have run dry. That means at some point we will need to start giving the Ukrainians Abrams and Leopard 2s (unless the Russians give up before we get to that point). Certainly if we still have any M60s in storage we might as well hand them over to Ukraine as well, and western European countries should hand over whatever Leopard 1s they still have in storage.
No country should "give" or "hand over" anything to anyone that may potentially weaken their own ability to defend themselves against any number of threats that exist around the world. Selling (...yes selling) surplus equipment is one thing but depleting front line stocks of MBT's such as Abrams and Leopards is dangerous and irresponsible when threats like China and Russia are very real and very possible.
@@d.r.4453 Helping Ukraine fight Russia is directly related to our security in Europe, and has the potential to cripple a long time strategic adversary. We should foot the entire bill for Ukraine's defense. We should overmatch the entire Russian GDP in aid to Ukraine (Russia's GDP is 1.6 trillion dollars, our GDP is 20 trillion, and the rest of NATO is another 20 trillion, it would cost us 4% of our respective GDPs to overmatch the entire Russian GDP). We spent trillions on Iraq and Afghanistan, wars which had no impact at all on our security or interests. We can afford to spend a few hundred billion dollars on a war which is absolutely central to our interests. Ukraine's defense IS our security. We have the manufacturing capability to replace anything we send to Ukraine. And in the meantime, while we ramp up our wartime production, we can afford to temporarily weaken our own forces in order to strengthen Ukraine's, since Russia has already committed all of their available forces to Ukraine and is physically unable to threaten any other country at the moment with conventional forces. China is another issue of course. But a war with China will mostly be an air and naval war. And I am not proposing that we send any ships to Ukraine. We should probably send some aircraft. But we have thousands to spare and our main issue in a war with China will be a lack of basing space for the aircraft we have, so we wouldn't be able to use all of our aircraft at once anyway. Additionally, doubling down on our support for Ukraine directly aids our security posture against China, as it is massively helpful in demonstrating to China that Taiwan will not stand alone if they are attacked. Sending a message to China that aggression will not be ignored is every bit as important as our physical capabilities. It may even buy us some time to increase our physical capabilities. There is even some hope that our assistance to Ukraine will deter China from invading Taiwan at all, but I still think it is very likely that China will invade by 2027. If China's invasion of Taiwan kicks off while the war in Ukraine is still ongoing, or shortly after it ends, then our ramp up of military production to aid Ukraine could actually be directly translated into wartime production capacity to be used against China.
