  • This repair should cover the following:
    2007-2014 Chevrolet Silverado
    2007-2014 GMC Sierra
    2007-2014 GMC Yukon
    2007-2014 Chevrolet Tahoe
    2007-2014 Cadillac Escalade
    2007-2014 Chevrolet Avalanche
I was getting the error message traction control off and stabilitak off error message across the dash and the codes C0455 and C0710 were coming up on the computer when I had oreilley auto check it. I determined it was the steering wheel position sensor part#15886733 or part #25833069. Update: it appears both have been discontinued and you will need to rely on aftermarket see carid.com, Rock Auto.com, O'Reilley, advance auto, autozone etc for part
This video will show you how to remove the steering wheel to replace the steering wheel position sensor. Hope it helps

Thank you for this video brother.. followed your guide and fixed this exact issue in my 2012 Chevy Tahoe LTZ!
For what it's worth, my Stabilitrak and Traction Control lights were on and my backup camera guide lines were not showing up on my factory navigation system. Replaced the steering wheel position sensor (GM Part # 20910871) and that fixed the issue immediately. Took only 30 minutes to do and saved a ton avoiding the dealership, no programming or dealership trip required for this repair.

Another thing to consider if you get these dashboard warnings....it may not be the steering angle sensor at all. For example - and one that related to a situation I had - you may have significant engine trouble. I had a 07 Yukon with a 6.2 liter and the fuel trims were pegged max rich (+25 long term trims on both banks, + >15 short term on both banks.) What I found was a huge vacuum leak in the intake system (air intake @ top of engine). The PCV hoses on both banks were split and sucking in huge air (unmeasured by the MAF) causing the huge addition of fuel to all cylinders via injectors/PCM fuel trim. While I didn't search tech bulletins or service info, I went about fixing the vacuum leaks by replacing the hoses and their connectors. I wasn't certain it would fix the Stabilitrack, etc. messages but it definitely needed fixing. Fuel trims went to normal (less than 5 on short term/long term on both banks)...dashboard messages stopped, no check engine light, all good for months now (and better running engine, of course.) So, just sharing my experience by suggesting significant engine misconfigurations or problems may cause the PCM to prevent driver-aid systems from working. Maybe it's like a "default strategy" the computer goes into in - and effectively shuts down the aid/safety systems which aren't critical. So, get an OBDII reader / computer, read the codes, watch live data, and see what may be wrong with the engine - if anything. Fixing the vacuum leaks is much easier and cheaper (in my case) than dropping the steering wheel to replace the sensor (which would have been in vein for my case.)

I have a 2013 suburban LTZ 1500 I inherited. It has a check Stabilitrack, Traction Control and Safety Zone Lane scrolling as I drive. I have had people say brake light switch, brake limit switch, bad ground strap engine compartment. I still have cruise conrtol and no check engine light. What to check first?

    • @CedarPass
      @CedarPass Год назад

@@americanpatriot2999 @American Patriot Lots...I'd say there's no "first" thing, but several things in a checklist. What kinds of tools do you have available? Off the top of my head you're going to want to have a vacuum guage (to measure what should be a 19 to 22 psi vacuum in the intake manifold), a bidirectional scan tool (so you can manually trigger elements to validate proper mechanical responses) to review live data (fuel trim data, amongst other key elements) and view freeze frame data for the conditions at the time the DTCs were triggered, etc. Depending on what happens / what's seen, there are lots of branches to this tree. Wiring diagrams are key. I recommend AllData wherein you can get a relatively cheap subscription for a small amount of time w/full access to service info of the vehicle.
If you have ADAS (and it sounds like you do given that you've mentioned Safety Zone Lane) I'm wondering if any of the multitude of sensors involved in the ADAS setup are malfunctioning - due to failure of the sensors or power/control/ground + wiring. And even if all the ADAS sensors/setup are working correctly, it still has to be calibrated (the car computer(s) have to be calibrated through a defined process that utilizes templates, charts, known distances, cameras - including the one on the car) by an auto shop or Dealer who has an ADAS calibration system. A small percentage of auto shops have the ability to do ADAS calibration because the equipment costs are ridiculously high ($30,000+ at a minimum.)
Are the TPMS sensors in the tires all working correctly? I.e., if any are "out", misconfigured, or the RCDLR is not receiving tire pressure data it may trigger the money lights. Given it's a truck platform (GMT900, I believe) it's likely your trailer brake control module is likely shot to hell - especially if you live in an area that uses salt for the roads during winter.
Any changes you've made to the vehicle prior to observing these errors? Any customizations? Even a custom radio with a backup camera can screw things up - especially if the custom radio taps into the brake light switch wire.
Last, "I have had people say brake light switch, brake limit switch, bad ground strap engine compartment." Does that mean you've replaced those items?

The position sensor has a silk-screen layer of resistive material that hardens after applied. Wire provide ground and 3 Left copper reed shaped wiper slide in contact left and the same right. A regulated 5Vdc signal changes values as seen by the body control. One goes 0-5Vdc, other 5-0Vdc at the same time. Dead straight is most likely 2.5Vdc. So power wires, return signal wires add up to 8 wires and the same part goes until 2015 if I am not mistaken. Check online at Rock Auto as my Malibu (Wife’s) was $51+ from GM / ACDelco and dealer May carry 1 in stock. Dealership technicians/mechanics are required to replace the upper half of the steering column instead of just a sensor. As with owners, same with techs, not all have the same abilities, knowledge or skill set when messing with steering. The direction you turn, rate of speed you turn, could activate stability controls by applying ABS in a certain order to keep you from rolling! Thank government from protecting idiots who can remember to breath if the cell phone is not being looked at. Plus, electric steering puts a load on the alternator instead of the engine to save us 0.4 - 0.7ths of 1 MPG in fuel, reducing emissions by a very tiny amount to save our planet by adding $2,500-$3,000 of more crap to go wrong under the dash.
But why does it wear out? The same reason the drivers door hinges are shot first because driver uses that door (Duke of Hazard County) not so much, but while driving, the six fingers wear material away as the wheel is straight ahead 98% of the time. So live with it as it increases the cost, more stuff to wear out and protects the majority of people driving by knee, while texting. I honestly want them off the road! More room for me! They let people out of jail the same day they stab / hit someone that either kills them of puts them in a hospital for months! Well, that is enough cheery stuff! Text away, we will see you in a ditch near us real soon, as people so down to 10 MPH to watch a lady jogger and get hit from behind by texting driver. Oh yes, seen that too! Well, have a nice day!

Thanks for the excellent video! 2012 Silverado, would get the random fault for stabilitrack and traction control - no rhyme or reason to when it would happen. Swapped out the sensor for an OEM ($41 from Rock Auto as of 4/6/18) and just drove around running errands for about two hours and no faults yet. A note on the spacers: my truck only had one. Thanks for showing this, I'll give this a go this upcoming Fall. Sucks when my Stability Control fails me sometimes in the middle of winter and my car goes back into stone age setting. Pulled a code and its the Steering Wheel position sensor. What if there is a little bit of movement with the steering wheel and the console? Like does it have to be locked solid with no little play or is a small bit of play alright like less than 5 degrees of play or a must of 0 degrees of play? Its just over rotation of the clock mechanisim that killed it right? A small amount of play should be fine or am I thinking it wrong?

Well I hope this helps me. I took my car to o'rileys. They put the code reader on it and it told them it was the sensor. So I ordered it. My lights have been on constantly for about 6-8months. Before that they only came on occasionally. I'm hoping this is my problem. I haven't had any issues with my car shutting off though. I do have a question though. Did you take the entire sterring wheel out of vehicle or were you able to replace the sensor with out taking it out. I watched another video. He taped his like you did, but he takes the entire wheel and shaft out of vehicle.

The steering wheel sensor is interlinked in to the traction control and suspension on ltz models. Mine was completely failed and didnt cause this so i doubt it would be your culprit. It sounds like traction control, rack and pinion if it happens in the front. I would have it hooked up to a computer to read the codes which will usually identify.
