Battle of Sekigahara 1600 - Sengoku Jidai DOCUMENTARY

- In the second half of the XV century, Japan entered a long period of crisis called the Sengoku Jidai or the Age of the Warring States. Ashikaga Shogunate lost its authority and the clan leaders - daimyos divided the islands into 400 small feudal holdings. Three military leaders - Oda Nobunaga, Toyotomi Hideyoshi and Tokugawa Ieyasu started their struggle to consolidate Japan in the XVI century and it all culminated at the battle of Sekigahara fought in 1600 between alliances led by Tokugawa Ieyasu and Ishida Mitsunari. The battle decided the next 250 years of the Japanese history

Could you cover the Sack of Rome in 1527 with all the previous battles leading up to it and the HRE mutiny sometime in the future? Please? Pretty please?
I don't have the means to do that currently, which is why I replied to this comment.
Do one on this please!

I will look into the sack of Rome.
that's what I want to see
Let's face it we all know playing Total War games are our bestest source of raw machinima footage samples for historical military battles
It is. :-) Shogun 2 is particularly great. :-)
Especially Empire, as the immaculate AI strategies and flawless pathfinding makes it a goldmine for cinematics.
It is also 100% accurate
Alexander the Great I wouldn't dare call Total War 100% accurate, some uniforms or weapons in Napoleon Total War are not accurate, especially the bearskin hats of the Old Guard, I'd recommend Mount & Blade Napoleonic Wars as having more accurate military uniforms and weapons

omg i love the history of the sengoku jidai era, thank you for making this video
Interesting anecdote: because Mori was so severely punished (its territory reduced and its home base confiscated, forced to move to the west most part of Honshu), every generation of the head of Mori clan used to, on New Year’s Day morning, ask his subjects, “Can Tokugawa be quashed yet?” And the subjects would reply, “Not yet.”
... Not sure if it’s actually true, but it’s almost poetic justice for the Mori that they played a pivotal part in Meiji Restoration.
E
The mori and shinadzu, who survived from the western armies would go on to end the Tokugawa shogunate
After Shôgun >>>
FYI “Jidai,” meaning a time period, can also be used to describe the period movie genre, called “Jidaigeki” (which were often samurai films). As George Lucas was a fan of these films, it is believed that the word “Jidai” was the inspiration for the term “Jedi” in the Star Wars films.
They also used to word daimyo in book of boba…. I think

I expected Total War Shogun 2 music, I got it. Awesome video!

Isn't this the soundtrack from the first Total War Shogun?
We used both, I think.
Try to use tracks from OST Battle Realms. Their Japanese music still a favourite to many to this day.

Anybody ever play the old PS2 game Kessen ? Taught me a lot about the late Sengoku jidai as a kid and especially the Battle of Sekigahara.
Great Video Kings thank you.
Musashi Miyamoto(Shinmen Takezo) started his journey here, he fought on the losing side & hid among bodies.
It seems recent research suggests this to be untrue. He was part of the western army but not present at Sekigahara. He fought in some earlier battle though.

One of my favourite series by you guys so far, as much as I enjoy all of your content, Japanese (in fact, Asia generally bar the Mongols) doesn't get anywhere near as much airtime as it deserves considering how rich, recorded, and entertaining their history really is.

Samurai warfare is a fascinating topic that isn't covered enough in general. Loved it. Well done guys.
Thanks to all of you who maded this vid possible, I just saw the movie and it was a bit complex to follow. Now I saw youre vid it is all more clear to me !
Mitsunari, "What can he be doing? Kobyakawa must rise and attack!"
Mitsunari, "Mori, Anko and Kikawa...WHY don't they move? Are they afraid? Have they lost their nerve?!"
Mitsunari, "Lord Kobyakawa has defected? This is impossible...he is the Lord Taiko's nephew....this cannot be!"
Had to have been a frustrating day for Mitsunari as his army had superior position, numbers and some of the best Daimyo in the land, but when half your army defects and a quarter ignores your orders...it's a bad day for you.
in defence of Mori and Chosogabe, since Kikkawa's units were in front of them blocking the way in the mountain, they could not advance physically.

Vinod Varghese It's not a small country
The problem is that the emperor didn't enforce of his people enough and mostly just acted passively. Unlike the shogunate where they enforce military rules under japan
It isn't small, not by European standards anyway. The only country in Europe larger than Japan is France.

I’m loving the Samurai Warriors portrait that you snuck in for Ieyasu Tokugawa 😂
More sengoku battles, please
Will consider, thank you!
Great video and I was hyped when I saw it in the RUclips recommended section. However, there are quite a few historical inaccuracies probably due to the lack of translated resources as I imagine.
Hideyoshi was a retainer of Nobunaga, not his ally. His position was much lower than both Ieyasu, who was an independent daimyo, and other Oda retainers who also fought for power after Nobunaga's death like Katsuie and Kazumazu.
There aren't a lot of reliable resources as history tend to get changed by the winner, and most resources we have today are either written in the Edo period (roughly 200 years later), with its main purpose to glorify or vilify someone in the past. But we still have some letters showing that Mori Terumoto was the commander of the Western army, with Ukita Hideie as the vice commander. Mitsunari had very little land, and lacked the necessary political might to rally daimyos to join the Western army. The plan of the Western army was also to fight Ieyasu at the Mino province, which failed when the Eastern army stormed and took it down within a week.
About the Shimazu's refusal of attack, it was circulated by historians that the event was after Kobayakawa's betrayal. Judging by Shimazu's active involvement in the Western army early on, they had no reason in not taking part in the battle when the Western army had the advantage (before Kobayakawa's betrayal). The Shimazu, more specifically, Shimazu Yoshihiro, also only had 1,000 men due to his conflict with his brother, who ordered that no men shall follow Yoshihiro except a mere 1,000 bodyguard to Osaka. The popular story of Shimazu joining the Western army because Yoshihiro was refused to be let into the Fushimi castle was most likely created as an excuse of the Shimazu's involvement with the Western army. The supposedly person who refused him, Torii Mototada, was dead by the time the story was spreaded, making it impossible to prove the validity of it.
The refusal of the Kikkawa forces to attack wasn't just due to Kikkawa Hiroie's personal betrayal, but rather Mori Terumoto's indecisiveness in who he should support. By the time, he was already the commander of the Western army and knew it's impossible to say that he didn't participate. However, he allowed Kikkawa to negotiate with Ieyasu to make sure that Mori clan would profit from either outcome of the battle. The army also only left the battlefield after Mitsunari and Ukita's forces routed.
Sorry for the inconsistency of the names (Mitsunari is a given name while Ukita is a family name), thought that might make the whole gibble gabble easier to read. Love your video btw!
The combination of the video with the footage from Total War games was just so perfect!!!!
Thank you very much! :-)
Jesus how many times can you be betrayed in one battle. What was with all the side switching ?
Ieyasu was a master of intrigue.
From what I understood no one was really concerned about legitimacy, right ? Because Western army seemed a bit more legitimate in it's goals yet everyone and their mother deserted. I'm sure it's more complicated than that though.
Not really. The real source of authority was power.
So much for Bushido heh, everyone only cares about their life like every sensible ruler.
@@zerosaber257 the next army on your doorstep after you've lost?
Another great video!!! So glad I found this channel!!! Keep it up
Excellent video! Love the channel. Though I must critique one aspect. As a story-teller and documentarian, I believe the "why" things happen are more important than the "what". By that I mean, the 'betrayals' and 'withdrawals' you mentioned were historically accurate. But the reasons behind them were absolute gems. So I'm surprised you didn't even mention the why of the story - that's truly the best part. Kikkawa owed a 'blood debt' to Ieyasu that he could not betray, which is why he split. Shimazu withdrew because the vassal that came as a messenger requesting that his attack commence did not bother to leave his horse, which the Daimyo he addressed was appalled at. So simply by being so insulted resulted in him not attacking either, and Ieyasu becoming Shogun. Amazing.
Been waiting for this. Great work as always!
At this point Im pretty sure you hold more information than most professors. Great video as always!
We very much don't. :-) However, we can create videos. Ideally, these two skills should be united into one. :-)

You and bazbattles uploading videos on same day God it must be heaven
Minor(not unimportant) mistake in this episode, Toyotomi, known as Hashiba when he served Oda, was not his ally but his most trusted lieutenant who was promoted from a mere servant. Hideyoshi lived a legendary samurai life and succeeded Oda but he was never Oda’s ally. Tokugawa is Oda’s ally since Tokugawa becomes independent.
E
Minor note. Hideyoshi was of the peasant class and so could not be a samurai. This is also the reason he couldn't claim the title of Shogun
Fantastic video, keep up the great work
You've made a rather large mistake, by the time of Hideyoshi's death, Tokugawa had already uprooted his power base from Imagawa to the Tokaido provinces formerly held by the Late Hojo clan. This was actually the result of Toyotomi attempting to defang Tokugawa by forcing him to rebuild his power base in a foreign land by offering him a massive amount of wealthy territory, instead it backfired and Tokugawa's superior administration resulted in the land becoming much more profitable and his power base growing even quicker than expected.
Good point. It was in my research, but I forget to add it to the script and then missed it in the footage. Thanks!
There are so many mistakes like that one in this video that it's like you spent 10 minutes on Wikipedia and nothing else and thought that was enough research for a topic like this. Why should I subscribe if you're this sloppy all the time?
@@Aethelia oh be quiet. If you know so much, go make your own video. Nobody stopping you.

@@Aethelia except this is a 2 year old video so they've probably improved. This video also could be the exception
My mind is blown by all the disobeyed orders and betrayal. Did not expect that. Awesome video!
Great video! I'd only like to add that Toyotomi Hideyoshi was a subordinate of Oda Nobunaga, not his ally. Also, just like Hideyoshi, Nobunaga could never become Shogun due to his family's lineage. (Hideyoshi even tried to make the Shogun adopt him haha)
I agree with all except that Oda claimed to be the descendent of Taira clan which allows them to become Shogun.
@shaik4122 only minamoto's clan descendents could become shogun, not from the taira clan
I'm sure that battle did more than 50 000 deaths , what a bloody massacre ... again for one thing the power ...
Great video as always Keep Going on
I love learning about Sengoku-Jidai and Japanese history! I really hope that this series’s takes off so you do the battles of Kawanakajima and Nagashino.
It was interesting to see this channel's take on the famous Japanese battle. I enjoyed it. My compliments to those who made this video a reality.
The book "Shōgun" by James Clavell is a really good one on this time period. Great read for anyone interested in the Tokugawa rise to power, with a novelistic approach. Read that one as a kid, really cool to see this time period done in this fashion!

I was expecting a video on this but this came faster than I thought. Good job! I clicked like because I think this video is good enough for general education purpose on the battle of Sekigahara, though there exist several inaccuracies in the positions of the army, as someone else has already pointed out.
The main question is Shimazu. I had two conflicting sources on that. Had to make a decision.
There are more than that. Ukita Hideie has the largest force in the western army, and his army was the first to engage in battles with Fukushima's army. On your map I don't see any of these happening.
I think you can check out this

The maps in the link are roughly the same as what I learned from other Japanese sources.
more of this series! this is so underrepresented and yet has so much history to work with
Maybe you guys can consider starting a “what if?” series? Like in this battle, Mitsunari had a lot of cards in his favor but due to betrayals and officers refusing to listen to his commands he didn’t stand a chance. What would have happened had things gone as planned? Would the warring states period lasted longer? Since you guys put so much effort in your research, you could provide the most likely answers, that would be so interesting!
Great video btw, love your content and keep up the amazing work!
Thanks! :-) Not planning "what if" for now. :-)

Something tells me you guys swallowed whole books on this. Figuratively and literally. Also samurai are cool because they knew the power of the mustache on the helmet.
Actually have you guys played the game shogun? Also did you know that the reason why samurai never developed the heavy armor of European knights was due to the fact that japan had not bred the huge horses of Europe.
Samurais are cool, indeed. :-) I love Shogun 2.
My only issue with those games: They are so good that a Chromebook peasant like me can't get one. But there actually is a really cool board game called shogun www.ebay.com/i/232662803647?chn=ps i have one. Basically you are in the sengoku era and beat up other samurai players. There was not enough metal in Japan for heavy armour I believe
Idk about the weight of armor or horses but they do adapt European style cuirass
A huge thank you to Kings and Generals and the patrons that made this possible! I'd love to see more of this, you did a great job. I've extensively studied this period, let me know if you need some help with the research or suggestions for material!
Thanks for watching and for your kind offer, will keep it in my mind. :-)
That is a whole lot of plot twist there. Betray here, betray there. Makes me wonder if Tokugawa Ieyasu is a man of awesome negotiation and writing skills or he is just simply a leader you want to follow. Reminded me of Tywin Lannister.
A mix of things. Some followed him, because they believed that he is going to win, others were promised the lands of the vanquished.
Ahh I see.
On a side note, now I know why the Kamen Rider with Oda Nobunaga powers uses a rifle, it was Oda himself who commissioned the use of gunpowder weapons throughout Japan.
Man , how I love the rich content of Japan history and culture
Yep, Japan is very unique!
Another factor is that a lot of daimyo don’t like Mitsunari
He was still loyal to nobunaga, he mostly like to rule more than to battle
Awesome vid liked seeing you cover events on the other side of the globe.
Thanks, we hope to have more videos on the Asian history in future.
Ahh Shogun 2 music. It has been a long time.
Great video.
Gonna go download Shogun 2 now
Thanks. I also feel a need to play. :-)
Thank you for this. Please do more videos on East Asia (Imjin Wars, Tang Dynasty Wars etc) can't wait for the next vid!
I think there's a mistake about Shimazu Yoshihiro's position. He was on the left side, near Mitsunari's position, behind Konishi's army. That's why they're famous for their legendary withdrawal after the battle. And also, I can't find Ukita Hideie's army, which was way bigger than Otani's.
I had two conflicting sources on that, and decided to go with the one that said he was on the right. That is why the battle starts with "we don't know where the initial attack happened."
this is what i call a good history vid. geart work ^^
Thank you for watching :)

The Mori clan would not forget this defeat and their consequent loss of land holdings - for generations they patiently plotted revenge against the Tokugawa clan for the next 250 years. The clan would eventually realize this revenge by playing a leading role in the Meiji Restoration as the forces of Choshu in the Boshin War against the late Tokugawa Shogunate. A video about the Boshin War and the resulting Meiji Restoration as a sequel to this would be cool.

Kinda funny that after a century of bloodshed and constant war, Japan (the shogunate) decided to isolate itself for the next 2 centuries and have 2 centuries of (mostly as long as you aren't Christian) peace. Kinda fitting.
And then the Meiji restoration. Which makes it all even more remarkable. :-)
Kings and Generals Ok
And then Matthew Perry.
To be honest peace is the norm in Japan not the exception... The Heian period was like the Tokugawa, a period of peace that lasted almost 1000 years.
What I find more remarkable is that in that previous period peace was mantained without isolation. In constant contact with the outside world.
problem is progress was slow at that period, but a great move to keep power
The video was popular with me and I look forward to more Battle History of Japan!
