      It is not a perfect repair, rather it seems like a temporary patch because it always ends up cracking and splitting in the same places that it broke before, and that is because it is a cold weld with different metallic materials joined together or similar, so sooner or later it will break. It starts again in the same place due to pressure and overload, which is why a complete joint depending on the metal is not the same as a hot or cold weld.

    Now I understand how those vehicle tragedies where trucks and buses tumble down the sides of mountains happen. The crankshafts and axels in these videos are cast from random scrap metals at road-side forges/machine shops. These repairs belong on farm only vehicles with not more than 200 horsepower.
    I spend hours watching these videos as they are quite entertaining. If the sun EMPies the earth and civilization declines, I hope these ingenious guys are my good neighbors.

    • @JonDingle
      @JonDingle 11 месяцев назад

      That drive shaft isn't cast iron. It is a type of cast steel because cast iron woldn't make it out of the factory yard. If you look at the swarf when its drilled, you can clearly tell its cast steel and as such, it is weldable.Only the quality of the weld will determine how long it lasts subject to the load applied when the vehicle is being driven and in what conditions. Not that I am saying I would repair it, but needs must if the part is not readily available.

Хоть кузнечным методом за неимением более технологичного варианта. При первом сбрасывании не порвет, эти трудяги на диване языком не молят-делают и работают-скоро китай догонят.

      @larrygriffin7024 Please take a class on the tensile, torsion, and shear strength of metals and how heat treating the metal hardens it. Once you heat it back up with a weld, those properties are gone. Yes, the work "looks" nice but, it will get you down the road just so far. The metal was flawed to begin with. My father worked heat-treat for 41 years and taught me about metals for my airplane builds.

    05:56 at the right side, you can clearly see another crack asking to be break...
    13:10 again right side, basically broke...
    that's crazy!

    I’m a retired structural design engineer and the third pin the man put in did little to nothing to give strength to the axel. The whole he drilled was intruding on the crack of the axil. It’s called edge margin. As a general rule you should have 2 times the diameter of the pin. Oh well.

    My dad welded our Cessna crankshaft back together when it broke in two. He could not afford a new one. The engine runs just fine!

    Drilling the holes ....5:55...seemed they wont line up later
    But having one pinned, would of made it easier to drill, And work with.
    Seems useful to have access to the machines, and have experience
    Can always build something with old junk.
