It was called Arithmancy and no, Hermione wasn't the only one that took them and it wasn't math. It had a completely different set of rules.

KingOfShadows1500 The risks aren't usually that high, most of the danger at Hogwarts during Harry's years were caused by things un endorsed by the school itself, namely Voldemort.
