the fortnite thing is actually because fortnite is not optimized on mac os as well as it is on windows. i actually bootcamped my mac and installed windows. playing on the same settings gave me a solid 60-70 frames versus the 30-40 on mac os. this is with a macbook pro 2016 15 inch.
Bro your so lucky you got 30 fps on mac fortnite, I get 8 fps and it has never not lagged.
How do you get bootcamp to work well? I tried, but I can barely load windows edge, let alone steam.

Just boot camp windows. Games just aren’t optimized on macs. On macOS I can only play Fortnite at 360p with all low settings at 40fps. On Windows boot camp, 1080p w/ medium setting at 70fps

yea, pretty weird, Apple holds the GPU back on everything other than FCP X. I can't go the pc route because I prefer FCP X, and frankly I use it daily for my videos and client ones.

I own a 2016 MacBook Pro 15" with the Rx 450. I installed Windows just for gaming. In Fortnite I can play the game at epic settings in View Distance, Anti-Aliasing and Textures. Resolution set to 1080p. In-Game I can enjoy a smooth gameplay at 70-90 FPS(No FPS Drop). Please Consider Bootcamp in your next "Can you game on a Mac".

I get to have both the best of both platforms.

it depends which game. FOrtnite, yes. but that's because of their code, epic has horrible code, unoptimized for the mac. Fortnite even runs like crap on i7 8700k with 1080ti. Epic needs to fix their game.
Guys it’s your cpu my fan broke and I had that stuttering issue so I took out my broken s drive and cpu percentidge went down from 100 to 76 in Fortnite and it could be if your on a really low resolution

I bought my MacPro 2013 because I want a computer I will like. I hate windows so much from working on it 8 hours a day on the job. I don't care if it costs more, I LIKE IT. Some people value more CPU cycles per dollar, some people value user experience. I'm the latter, so I buy Macs.
I was so excited when I found Geforce now but when I got it I realized my internet connection was to bad to use Geforce now. After that I tried an external gpu, the gtx 1080, as well as a 144 hz monitor for my 2016 15 inch MacBook Pro but it was really annoying having to switch to windows just to game and then switching back to Mac OS to do college work. I also had a lot of driver related issues in bootcamp windows. Then I just decided to buy a complete gaming pc with a gtx1080ti and a Ryzen 1800x cpu and I am very happy with the results. All I am saying is that using a Mac to game can work but it is so much less troublesome just using a windows PC.

Heres my experience with GeForce Now PC:
Do not bother using it unless you have an ethernet fiber connection or a 5ghz wifi connection.
Luckily, as a university student I have ready access to 5ghz connections, however from time to time I still heavily get dumped from 1080p to 720p or lower on spikes. Dont use it to play competitively, as it's rare to maintain a stable 1080p connection even with a 50-100mbps connection.
Otherwise it's amazing.

Same. I play on a really bad connection and fluctuate between 480p60 and 720p30 on fortnite which in my opinion is not a very enjoyable experience
I'm a bit different here. I have a great connection with Ethernet but I opt to using 2.5GHz for long games like the Witcher 3. Why? If I use Ethernet GNOW eats my data like a baby eating candy. I sadly don't have unlimited internet here, it's too expensive.

If you don't even have unlimited Ethernet, you might as well as cut RUclips off the list as well, much less any streaming service ever. All of which require unlimited Ethernet connections.

PC is strictly worse for this type of thing. It just doesn't have as many options or the best software available on windows, whereas Mac has everything on Windows and their specific Mac options like Sketch, Final Cut etc.
In the creative field comparing mac with windows is like comparing mac with windows for gaming, yeah you can still do it but it's just not as good and has way less options.

This is just a waste of money. If you want to game on your mac download boot camp. I play with my 2016 macpro 13" w/ touchbar and went from 30fps and 33 ms on MacOs in fortnite to 60+ fps and 15 ms. The best part - it's free!

Actually, my iMac runs 60fps with no stuttering. I think they might have optimized it better in the 5.40 update, or it may be my settings.

I suspect CPU being a bottleneck in this setup (especially when it throttles) and this stuttering issue is most likely caused by that.

Why is this still a question people have? The only thing stopping someone from gaming on a Mac is the amount of games available for it, the hardware can obviously handle them.
I just got access to GeForce Now and it is sooooo worth the long wait time! Latency is very minimal (200 Mbps down)

Just an FYI, games ALWAYS run better under Windows as they can either use DirectX or they can use an actually modern version of openGL. The most current version of openGL that macOS supports is 3.3, which was released March 11, 2010. Over 8 years ago!

I used to game on a late 2011 MBP, with a whopping 512MB Intel HD3000 GPU. It runs GTA IV, GTA SA with all the mods, TF2, Gmod, etc. but nothing really demanding. It's kinda surprising really.

the lag issue with fortnite might just be a fortnite issue because I normally get around 150 FPS but yesterday I was somtimes getting 4 FPS

Austin and his team use macs and PC for productivity. It's been shown in previous videos and his twitter. LinusTechTips, Hardware Canucks, Tech Yes City and many, many other RUclipsrs use PC for creativity. Mac does not have any advantages in 2018, unless you have "invested" heavily in iTunes, which is the greatest Apple marketing trap ever.
I mean I am a designer and I strongly disagree. Especially if you are working with clients Apple creates a very strong first impression of professionalism, which Windows is probably unlikely to ever match. Not to mention there is a lot of Mac exclusive design software such as Sketch.
Yes, it is possible to work creatively with windows, but it's like trying to game with a Mac it's just not as good.

The reason you don't see that many more frames is because it's just giving better graphics. If external processors (or things like them) were a thing, it would be better.

Fortnite for Mac issues are purely software. It’s a combination of MacOS and Fortnite. I can get it running on my MacPro at a consistent 60-70fps but it will drop down to 1-4 FPS in the first attempt of playing. Every other match is more or less fine. BTW I have a 5,1 MacPro with 32GB ram, Samsung Evo 960 ssd and RX 580 8gb card. I think it must be how it’s trying to cache some of the map information into memory. MacOS just can’t handle it... probably a metal issue.
The stuttering on the Mac version of Fortnite on both the internal and external GPU is a known problem with the Mac version of the game, which is painfully optimized at the moment.

running a 2018 Mac Pro 13inch and everything runs really smooth for me with a razor core x and a AMD radeon x580. All graphics are set to high and i never had any issues like that. I would say there's probably just better setups you can have for better gaming on a Mac just like any other brand you want to use.
My Experience with Gaming on Macs and Windows Based PCs! For me Windows 10 Is the best pc gaming platform ever! However the Mac can play some games at alright frame rates, But the Mac has a lot of great editing software like Final Cut Pro X! But still Windows 10 for Life! :D just my opinion. I’m completely happy to just turn down the settings a bit, being able to play some games on your day to day machine rules. I’m kind of over the gaming PC thing, I really don’t want to have one machine for work and than another whole system for games. I’ve been ripping up SC2 and TF2 on my 2013 MBA for years, I’d say this looks like a nice step up.
