- Train trip report of my journey on Alex express train from Prague to Domažlice on Prague to Munich route. Alex is part of Die Länderbahn - German private railway company.

Despite the comfort (or lack of) you were actually quite lucky. This kind of carriage is a rare breed. These were built in the DDR shortly before the wall fell, and were planned to run in a new InterCity system together with the new "Komfortwagen". But after the german reunification and the merger between DB and DR, production of these coaches were stopped as they did not meet the standards of the newer west-german coaches. The few that were made got a new paint job and were used for InterRegio services and for the smaller international trains to Sweden and Denmark. Even back then, they were extremely unpopular, especially for the international and west german travellers. Despite this, they are very unique, because they pretty much show a glimpse of what "modern" railway transport would have looked like in Eastern Germany if the wall had not come down.
This is an interesting history, thanks for the info! We also have a lot of reconstructed coaches in operation in the Czech Republic (operated by ČD), originally manufactured in the DDR (in VEB Waggonbau Bautzen)
Actually,
the first coach is Minden-Deutz (West Germany), the second coach is FIAT (Italy).
Both Czech coaches were made by VEB Waggonbau Bautzen (East Germany) as 2nd class coach with 11 comparments , class Bmee 21-70, but refurbished into an open-saloon coach class Bdmpee 20-71 at Pars Nova Šumperk.
omg they still use one of the old Alex 2nd class coaches? :O amazing, I love them because you can still open the window :)
They should actually be retired by now, that’s why I’m so surprised!
Yes, these coaches are still in service. It was filmed a week ago.. On the way back, there was already a newer 2nd class coach.. but for a change, the 1st class was an old coach :-D

nice channel - interesting informations about eastern loco-hauled traffic - !R-Vltava is a great train! - a travelstyle bygone way to early around here in the west
compartment vs. open-plan coaches:
the remaining compartment-coaches became refurbished in some pretty suboptimal ways - curtains were taken out - full recline got lost(compare uic-x(FS, DB, ÖBB etc.) to uic-y(Bautzen/Halberstadt ex-DR, ex-eastblock etc.) coaches)
even during an Interrail-trip in a full FS uic-x coach(72compartment-seats) on an overnight sleeper Agrigento-Milan it was comfortable, as there's always the corridor(with aditional folding seats) available to the stretch out, get some fresh air through the openable windows, etc., etc ...
pleased / a bit jealous to see, that just eastern operators like RegioJet are using stunning western sorted out compartment-coach stock - talking about RegioJet - i'd go that far, to prefer some rather hard padded ex-DB-Bcm(Prague-Brno) to a modern CD-Apmz(Berlin-Prague) - best regards from Switzerland("open-plan coaches paradise"...)
amazed by the Leo Express Premium Class: a very exklusive(6 pax ...) but great variant for a "regional" Stadler FLIRT - even topping the first class of the actual Stadler long haul flagship SMILE
btw: such italian coaches as displayed in this video are still in use in their homecountry on overnight relations - unrefurbished with curtains and full recline - offering a good-deal cuccette-like comfort ... as long not being occupied with more than three people per compartement ;
Thanks so much for watching and for the extensive comment! It seems that you often traveled to the Czech Republic :-) I also like older trains, with openable windows. But I prefer open-plan coaches, but it depends on the configuration, as a solo traveler I prefer airline style seats. I know that Switzerland is an open-plan coaches paradise, unfortunately, what I saw, most trains there have a face to face seat arrangement. Greetings from Prague :-)
@@PeteBrandy Yes - in Switzerland there's often face-to-face arrangement - BombardierRABDe502 or StadlerRABe501 for example. That's ok for many services(outside the peak hours) but can be quite constricting otherwise. On the other side airline-style-arrangement isn't that enjoyable either in a narrow peak-time window-seat ... that's why the good old corridor was always a good alternative ...
My last trips to the Czech Republic were quite some time ago ... the first one would have been for a graduation in 95.
With the EC "Albert Einstein"(Interlaken-Prague) from Berne to Prague in a cozy SBB-UIC-X(Bm 21-70) - on the way back in a couchette on the Prague-Stuttgart overnight. Sadly, this year even the Lindau-Munich branch of this classic route was rated down to commuter traffic(DB Regio instead of ALEX-UIC-X/Y stock) ...
Later on(the 90ies to about ten years ago) there was a lot of Interrail travelling - how great this was in those years; one ticket - a station - all cardinal points open to explore ... no limited contingents - no compulsory reservations - just pure liberty ...
Remembering also a Millennium-NYE-trip to Prague, taking the overnight from Nürnberg and back to Frankfurt/Main. Travelled on a domnestic night train from the capital via Chomutov to Cheb or also on a "Richlìk"-service(these snug green uic-y coaches) from Linz via Summerau-Budejovice to Prague. Along there was also a ride in the early morning hours on the Budapest/Vienna-Dresden/Berlin(?) overnight between Prague and Dresden ... that night, I remember beeing pretty late, so that I had to rush by taxi, to catch up with the train at the Holesovice station.
Very scenic were evening-rides along the Vltava towards Dresden on overnight services towards Switzerland/Netherlands/Scandinavia.
Upon a trip to Australia in 2001 I got to know a Czech girl from Ostrava - met in a Melbournian English class - travelled with for a month by rental car through NZ - but never really made it to her place or other places east of Prague in the Czech Republic.

No, Alex a GySEV (Raaberbahn) si môžu ruky podať... U obidvoch dopravcoch, v tých ABmz kombinovaných voznoch, sú oddiely 1. triedy len "naoko".
Smutné na tom je, že u nás by som za lístok platil +50% za 1. triedu...
Ano, souhlas, to není 1. třída. Zvláště když to srovnám se stavem před pár lety, kdy ještě na Mnichováku jezdily dobré jedničky ARmpee od ČD .. Od té doby jsem raději do Mnichova vždycky letěl letadlem..
Thank god you weren't taking this train in the opposite direction EXACTLY 8 months later.
Btw, I had to travel by this train to Munich 2 days before the accident. But a day before my journey, I cancelled this ride and rebooked to another route (via Cheb and Nuremberg).
I like the historical architecture of Prague looks beautiful the coaches that CD use look more modern than the alex ones but it's a shame quarantine or test was required at the time would have been a nice trip to Munich
Yes, now there is a worse train composition. I have traveled this train several times to Munich, but in the past the 1st class used to be a ČD car, where half of the car was a restaurant and half of the car 1st class.
@@PeteBrandy oh right. I have seen other videos featuring Alex trains too and it seems like the company has a mix match of trains from old stock to modern double deck coaches sometimes coupled together
Skvělé video, Západním Expressem plánují jet do Mnichova příští rok, prej se bude střídat dopravce na této lince (Německé straně), takže snad přijdou modernější soupravy 😁
Díky! Já jel celou trasu 2x, poprvé se mi ještě poštěstilo bílé ARmpee832, to byla ta cesta mnohem lepší.. já bych se nezlobil, kdyby tu celou trasu dostaly ČD, ale nemají bohužel vhodnou Diesel loko..

Díky moc :-) Ano, potřebovala, a ještě ideálně zdvoukolejnit a elektrizovat.. ale úvratě by asi zůstaly i tak.. Já to jel 2x celý až do Mnichova a musím říct, že od té doby jsem vždycky radši letěl s Lufthasou :-D

Thanks! In the normal situation, there are only random checks on the German side while driving (between Furth im Wald and Cham). But now, due to the lockdown, the situation in Germany is stricter, so I assume thorough checks.

1. Třída v ABbdmz (nebo nějak podobně) u alex je sice jen přeznačená 2. Třída ale vypadá to pohodlněji než některé 1. Třídy u českých drah
Jo, sedačky jsou v Alexu v pohodě, jen to místo na nohy je stejné jako ve dvojce.. U Alexu je ale větší zrada, že často nedodržují plánované řazení a pošlou starší vůz (což se mi stalo na cestě zpátky) a nebo nepošlou vůbec jedničku :-D

Thank you very much, Pete! Where did you buy the ticket and make the seat reservation? I have booked the travel from Regensburg to Pragues and back with Deutsche Bahn for the coming September and I could not make a seat reservataion, neither with Deutsche Bahn nor with Länderbahn.
Thanks for watching! Try seat reservation via ČD (České dráhy), there you can also buy seats without tickets. But in the direction from Regensburg to Prague, the seat map may not be available, only automatic seat allocation.
@@PeteBrandy Thanks so much for the quick reply! Unfortunately, CD does not offer reservations for this connection online either. But I will call them and Länderbahn tomorrow to find out more details.
Hezký, jako to vypadá jako Bmz, akorát první třídy a upravené na kola a bar. A ten druhý nemá už jezdit, má tam jezdit to samé, akorát druhé třídy. A ta lišta za tím sedadlem, netlačí to? Like pěkné
Nic netlačilo :-) Ta jednička je původně Bmz, proto je v těch oddílech tak malý prostor.. ten druhý nemá jezdit, ale u Alex vlaků je změna řazení celkem častá, na zpáteční cestě zas poslali starou jedničku
@@PeteBrandy já bych jel tím Bdmpee a měl bych vydelano. Není to horší než ta jednička komfortem. Jel jsem s ním teď do Ostravy a bylo to dobrý, pohodlný, prostor, vše good. A to druhý bylo nějaký béčko, nebo co? Mělo to těch 160, nebo ne?
Who built the ALEX cars? Was it SGP?
Alex has no Austrian cars made in SGP Graz or simmering. The older Alex cars are made by VIS Halberstadt (Germany) and the newer ones are originally from Italy (I think Eurofirma).
I have seen the Alex in Munich 2 years ago. Nice Job. I am so exitet to travel verry soon too. On sunnday it comes out. Do you think with Musik ist the Travel report better or without music ? I am happy to your answer and your comment under the travel report.

Where have you heard, that only Alex cars will be composited on these trains in the future?
From people from ČD.. But it doesn't have to happen, because it already happened that Die Länderbahn didn't even have enough cars for basic composition.
Tohle je nejhorší první třída na české železnici, s jedničkou to nemá nic společného, je to rekonstrukce vozu 2. třídy z Itálie, a ke všemu Alex na údržbu svých vozů sere, a proto tam je mnoho věcí nefunkčních, a nejsou schopni zajistit pravidelné řazení a obvykle tam nasadí šroty z Německá (což je právě ten vůz Bm co byl ve vlaku řazen hned za loko) viz skutečné řazení VagonWEB. 🤦♂️
Jiří Peroutka No to ještě šlo, ale zpátky byla změna řazení a poslali něco z 50.let, to byl teprve bizár.. a přitom ještě 2 roky zpátky jsem jel do Mnichova ČD jedničkou, půlenou s bistrem
@@PeteBrandy To se děje normálně, někdy tam ani tu jedničku nedají, případě jim úplně vypadne jeden vůz a ČD jim půjčí ABmz. Nevím proč tam chtějí Němci pořád Alex a nenechají to na ČD. 😐
Jiří Peroutka Ano, bohužel.. musel jsem to 3x přebookovavat, abych chytl na vlaku ten spravny vuz.. a to jsem slysel, ze snad od konce roku budou na techto expresech uz pouze Alex vozy
@@PeteBrandy Tak o tom jsem nic neslyšel, a doufám, že tomu tak nebude, jelikož ty Bdmpee 233 jsou jediné kvalitní vozy na této lince. Jediný co je na té lince dobrý jsou ty jejich "Herculesy" od Siemensu.

Hello. Seat reservations can usually be booked via the České dráhy (Czech Railways carrier) website, where individual seats can also be purchased without a ticket. You can search for a connection (you select the train on the day and time you are going, add people and your travel class). After searching for the train, you will find a button next to which is written the price and the text "purchase a ticket", in the scrolling menu you select / switch to "purchase reservations only" and then you can click on the text "select seat from the seating map". But make sure that some carriagess in the train composition can change (mainly Alex cars), ČD cars usually still run the same (two open space 2nd class cars).

@@hazfamtravelling That's interesting, maybe they weren't on sale yet, or the entire seating is blocked because they don't know what the train's composition will be (this also happens sometimes). But I honestly think the bus is a better option than this Alex train (these alex trains are one of the least reliable connections between Prague and Germany).
Z Německa to zase jede s taurusem prý
Taurus jel až z Regensburgu, trať přes Schwandorf ještě není pod dráty. Jinak jsem to jel dvakrát až do Mnichova a několikrát se přepřahalo, jednou jsme úvraťovali a pak v Regensburgu nás připojili za jiný Alex vlak a s Taurusem jsme jeli do Mnichova.
@@PeteBrandy jsem viděl video - odjezd Mnichováku z Mnichova a měl za sebou připojené jakési dvoupatrové vagóny a ještě cosi za těmi 4 vozy, co jezdí normálně
