    This route deserves more love. Single track, non-electrified route is a disgrace for such an important international connection.

      Yes unfortunately. A track upgrade is planned, but it will probably take a long time. In my opinion, it would be better to electrify the line from Cheb to Nuremberg and extend the Západní Expres trains route there.

      @@PeteBrandy Yeah, in the past they were plannning a 200 km/h line from Regensburg to Roding, which alone would cut the distance by 43 kilometers. Combined with other upgrades in germany and the czech republic it would have brought the time back to 3h12 between prague and munich. Unfortunately it got scrapped, because of a very low Cost-benefit analysis.

    Those 2nd class compartment coaches remind me so much of the 1970,s and early 80,s German trains, many times when the compartments were full I’d to sit in the corridor seat until one became available in the compartment and in those days I was travelling from osnabruck to the hook of Holland so I was glad of a seat anywhere and the trains were always packed, great post enjoyed every bit, ps you even got the morning mist which was exactly the same as the first time I went to Germany, bringing back the nostalgia for me

      Thanks so much for watching! I was glad that this ABvmz coach was used on my way instead of the newer one. I think these coaches are very similar to the ones you traveled. Btw. sometimes an even older Bm 2nd class coach runs on this train.

    Thanks, Pete! Your video is very detailed. For me, the best Czech trains that you offer us are the ones we see at the beginning, the Elephants, there you know ... They are magnificent. Your video is wonderful too. For us, the second class is more than sufficient.

    The ABvmz and it's pure 2nd class brothers are a rare bunch, and I am happy that ALEX has kept them in operation for so long. They were originally built for the modernization of the East German railways in the late 80's, and would have become the backbone of a new InterCity system. Then reunification happened and the West German InterCity system was expanded. The problem was that these cars did not meet the standards when it came to comfort, so they were used for InterRegio services were they were also heavily criticised by the passengers. They then ended up on less popular international trains, such as the InterRegio services to Denmark, Sweden and The Czech Republic. Why they never got a proper upgrade is beyond me. They are much younger than most of the german IC-fleet, which dates back to the late 70's.

      Yes, these coaches had a really sad history. The same coaches were also delivered to ČSD (now ČD), where they were operated as the Amee and Bmee series, then they were modernized to the open-plan Bdmpee233 coaches (ČD also operates them on Prague - Munich route).

    I really love taking the ALEX. I used to live in Regensburg, and when going to Munich I always had the choice between the regional express train from Nuremberg via Regensburg to Munich, or the ALEX from Prague via Regensburg to Munich. I always chose the ALEX as it's much more comfortable, especially the old cars; Also the train layout is rather unique with the single double-deck coach in between the normal ones

      I think the classic loco hauled trains are much better than sets. I also like more the older coaches, e.g. Alex ABmz coach is much better than their newer ABbmdz due to more spacious 5-seat compartments in 1st class and openable windows :-) But I read that from 2023 on the Prague - München line alex will be replaced by ÖBB Allegra Deutschland and the line from Hof will be operated by DB.

      @@PeteBrandy we'll see ... as long as it runs I'll happily choose the ALEX. I chose to sit in the double deck coach ones ... good for being modern, but no comparison to the features of the old cars. Last time I went from Freising to Regensburg I was standing at the open window the entire trip

    A great video Pete - and I absolutely loved your atmospheric opening shots of the trains in Prague: just beautiful! 😍 I usually take first class if it's a reasonable surcharge - mainly for the reason that it is generally not as busy as second class and thus quieter and more relaxing. I think the first class compartments should be 4 seats instead of 5 though. I have only taken this train between Munich and Regensberg and it was absolutely packed!

      Thanks so much Linda! :-) I chose the first class mainly because in the Regensburg - Munich section this train runs crowded, and it was also this journey (except 1st class). Otherwise, this was an even better seat configuration of 1st class (with 5 seats), usually there is a coach with 1st class compartments rebuilt from the 2nd class with 6 seats and less legroom.

      This route is very interesting, especially sections with Hercules. The 1st class coach was a bit old school, but I like these types of coaches :-D Alex is known mainly in Germany, it's a former subsidiary of Arriva, now it belongs to the Netinera group, which is owned by the Italian state railways Ferrovie dello Stato.

    Nice trip report from Prague to Munich great scenery around the whole route including the nice sounds of the first locomotive and coaches also I notice the vectron had a special 175 year german railway livery

    Looks like the train from Hof had a one upper level coach would be great for viewing from. Does not look lilke many people on the train, so in this case sitting in a 1st class enclosed compartment might be ok. enjoyed the ride, thanks for taking me along.

      Thanks so much! Yes, part of the train from Hof also has a double-decker coach, mostly are these coaches in train composition due to the low-floor condition. Otherwise, the 1st class was a good choice for this train, because between Regensburg and Munich the train was crowded (in 2nd class), in some coaches people stood in the aisle.

      yes, that's sth which makes the train a rather unique combination with the single modern double-deck coach in between the older single deck coaches. It's like being in a different world there, but being a modern one I can tell you that the seats are much harder than the ones in the old coaches which sometimes seem to have springs in the seat. REALLY soft and comfortable; As for the view: it really doesn't make a big difference on that route

    It's a beautiful train journey, particularly going through the forests near the border, but with two changes of direction and two changes of loco, and lots of twists and turns, it takes forever: it's much quicker to drive.

      There are realistic plans to make the whole track from Plzeň to Nürnberg doubletrack and electrified. Work should start in 2023. Trains will run with something between 180 to 200 km/h.

      There is also a slightly faster variant, but with two transfers - in Cheb and Nuremberg with a combination of IC, Regional Express and ICE. But with this variant, there is a risk of transfer in Cheb, where there is only 10 minutes. And there is also another option I've used occasionally - Lufthansa with a flight time of about 40 minutes.

    The accident that was in Milavče, I live there. Just 100 mtrs away from the place where the tragedy took place. From my bedroomwindow I could see the whole rescueaction that took place.
    The Alex is a nice train, the Hercules locos are very nice looking. I love these trains. On my train model that I have there is also this train running.

    ES64U4 is also called ÖBB1216 Poland EU44 in Czech Republic ÖBB1216 is the Berlin Elsterwerda-Dresden Decin Prague Wien Graz Railjet and PKP EU44 Bohumin Breslau Berlin. The Accident could have been avoided if Germany Deutsche Bahn Netze and Czech Railways Infrastructure department used ETCS LZB on München Prag route. If Mirel train protection system former Czechoslovakia was installed on the route it would have prevented the accident too.

      Thanks so much! There are many railway lines in Germany, which are not electrified. Btw. this train looks empty, because I boarded almost 30 min prior departure. The only part where the rain is almost empty is cross border part. Btw. between Regensburg and Müchen this train was pretty crowded (some people were stay in the corridors).

    V těch Alex vozech občas jezdívám na Ex 352 z Prahy do Plzně, protože nemám moc rád velkoprostory :) Jak píšeš ve videu, řadí i modernější vozy, než jsou ty na videu, kde jsou třeba zásuvky u každého sedadla. Naštěstí jsem měl v 90 % štěstí na ty modernizované vozy :) Díky za ukázku, jak vypadá cesta z Plzně dál do Mnichova ;)

      Ten novější ABbmdz jsem dělal loni, tak jsem byl celkem rád, že mi teď vyšel ABvmz.. Jinak ale poslední 2 týdny na hl.n. potkávám nejvíc ABvmz a teď i často staré Bm místo Bmz..

      Ahoj, díky moc! Ta lokomotiva je fakt povedená, celkově ten lokomotivní park alex je fakt super, Taurusy (teda 183) a Herculesy :-) Jinak cena zvláště ve 2. třídě není špatná, jednička už je trochu dražší, když si vezmu, že za stejnou cenu se dá poskládat i včasná jízdenka přes Cheb, kde je kombinace Západní expres s Amz138 (brzy InterJet) + DB RegioSwinger + ICE :-)

    It's seem strange (to me) that 1st class seats are in a compartment with seats facing you, you leg room would greatly reduce if someone seat across from you right?

    The compartments look comfortable enough but visible wear and tear and inadequate outlets reveal these trains are running way past expiration date. Thanks for the ride. Do you post your new videos in Notifications?

      Yes, these cars are a bit older, only one power socket per seat and also interior looks a bit oldschood.

    Are there different train types from Prague to Munich?

      Yes, you can also travel via Nürnberg and Cheb (ICE + Regional express + InerCity). This way is more comfortable than Alex train with almost similar journey time. This route is good in the direction from Munich to Prague (ICE Munich - Nuremberg, then Regional express Nuremberg - Cheb and from Cheb to Prague InterCity train). But honestly, the best option is to take a bus or fly with Lufthansa :-D

      @@jamaha Ano, Kategorie Ex by měla končit a budou jen EC a IC .. dokonce ten Mnichovák už před lety jako EC jezdil, v roce 2017 jsem jel z Mnichova s EC Karel Čapek a v té době ještě jezdil ČD bílý ARmpee bistro vůz :-)

      Mockrát díky! No já jsem si přál, aby jel tento starší vůz, abych mohl využít otevírací okno, to je pak hned jiný zážitek z cesty :-) No ta 1. třída bohužel neodpovídá dnešním požadavkům u mezinárodních vlaků, a to mají od nového jízdního řádu jezdit tyto vlaky pod označením EuroCity..

      @@PeteBrandy Máš krásný videa, odebírám. Ale proč v angličtině když jsi Čech. Určitě tam píšeš dost zajímavostí o tom kterém vlaku a já si je nemůžu přečíst. Jinak vítej v klubu s těmi polospouštěcími okny. Připomněl jsi mi tím i klasická Béčka, kterými cestuji nejraději, jenže těch už je bohužel dnes pomalu jako šafránu, všude ty skleníky s pevnými skly. A to pro mě není hlavně v létě žádný cestování když si nemůžu otevřít okno.

      @@marcusaurelius1511 Díky :-) No Čech sice jsem, ale 80% shlédnutí mám ze zahraničí, proto titulky v Angličtině. Jo, taky mám rád starší Bautzeny, bohužel už zmizí i na R17 (rychlíky Vltava a Lužnice). Otvírací okna jsou fajn, akorát ty vozy můžou jen 140, tak se nehodí na koridory.

      Thanks :-) I bought the 1st class ticket directly from carrier České dráhy via their website. Yes, this 1st class is spacious, but unfortunately other 1st class cars are often operated on this train, which are newer but not very spacious (they are rebranded 2nd class cars). Also, last time the train is often delayed (it depends in which direction you travel), in case of delay you have to change to another train in Schwandorf.

    6 Minuten Verspätung sind akzeptabel, aber die Gesamt-Fahrzeit Prag - München ist zu lange. Die Strecke müsste schneller werden, aber das ist bei den vielen eingleisigen Abschnitten und zweimal Kopf-Machen (Schwandorf, Regensburg) leichter gesagt als getan. Danke für das informative Video mit guten Bildern. Wegen Corona scheint der Zug ziemlich leer zu sein: Ein Defizit-Geschäft. Corona muss endlich besiegt werden.

      Ja, die Fahrzeit ist lang. Nur zwischen Domažlice und Schwandorf war der Zug leer. Der Zug von Regensburg nach München war überfüllt.

      Es gibt leider keine zweigleisige Strecke! Auch weiter oben Richtung Cheb ist es noch sehr ausbaufähig!!!

      @@PeteBrandy Domazlice, die kleine tschechische Stadt, ist den Deutschen gut in Erinnerung durch den tollen Einsatz der Tschechen beim Suchen und Finden des 8-jährigen Mädchens Julia, die sich vor einigen Wochen alleine in den dortigen großen Wäldern verlaufen hatte. Als Deutscher danke ich den Tschechen für ihren großen Einsatz. Julia wurde stark entkräftet von einem tschechischen Förster gefunden. Dies alles hat die deutsch-tschechische Zusammenarbeit und Freundschaft gestärkt.

    Why is the train empty? I dont see other passengers

      This train wasn't empty. I was at the station 30 minutes before departure. This train is usually busy between Praha and Plzeň, then is running almost empty across the border, but between Regensburg and Munich was crowded, in some coaches people also stood in the aisle, only 1st class was almost empty, fortunately for me :-D

      I mostly know the route and it's not my first time here. Otherwise, there are not that many types of locomotives operated in Europe, so you can find a lot of information. I also have product sheets from manufacturers for some types of locomotives at home :-)

      Thanks ou :-) You can buy tickets in Munich at the Alex customer center at Bayerstraße 24. But it is better to buy tickets online (also they are usually cheaper via ČD / České Dráhy shop than via Alex)

      Díky moc! Jo, píšu to tam, že poslali jiný vůz než je v plánovaném řazení, ale já jsem rád, protože z toho novějšího už mám video a na tento ABvmz jsem čekal dlouho :-)

    Attention to this witness account of my train journey Prague-Munich in September 2022. The story of a journey full of obstacles begins at the border control of the German police who delayed the timetable of the Alex train at the border crossing by 20 minutes. This after a delay of 10 minutes in the Czech Republic. Together 30 minutes late. So the train conductor announced that due to the delay, the train would not run further than Swandorf (of all places)...."contact the conductor for alternatives". For the record, this happened at 10 pm in the evening.
    So via Regensburg to Münich where we missed the connection to Köln.... Fortunately, we were able to enjoy some noisy Oktoberfest-goers, numb between the homeless on an uncomfortable bench. No heated waiting area available for stranded travelers.....
    After waiting for about 3 hours at Munich station, we were able to take the first ICE to Köln at 3:24 am.
    Crossing the German-Czech border with the private train company ALEX is an unpredictable adventure.

      I traveled on Alex train from Prague to Munich several times, but I had a luck, probably because I always took the first morning train from Prague, which is not so affected by delays, even the police checks only took place on the train while it was ran. But I prefer to choose the route via Cheb, which, although with transfers, is better. Unfortunately, Alex trains are known for their unreliability and random composition (different or missing carriages) - I think I also wrote the info in my video.. I case of delays, the biggest problem was in Schwandorf, where the train joined with the Alex train that was traveling from Hof, and if the train from Prague was more late, the second train was't waiting.. It is certainly better to choose other alternatives than Alex for trips between Prague and Munich, e.g. with transfers in Cheb and Nürnberg, or a Lufthansa flight, in the case of a trip to Köln it is better to use EuroCity train Prague - Dresden and then from Dresden the direct IC2 train (via Leipzig).

    Video je super,jeho dlzka je primerana,zachytene hlavne body a nie je nudne...ale male pripomienky,ktore by mozno mohli trochu zlepsit do buducna vybornu kvalitu-titulky...su super,aj ked su v anglictine a hovoreny komentar chyba,nie je dobre,ak idu sucasne s videom,parkrat sa mi stalo,ze som sa zapozeral do okolitej krajiny viac a unikol mi titulok,musel som si to pretacat naspat,mozno by bolo lepsie 20-30 sekundovy staticky zaber na zabulu Plzen a do toho vsunut titulok o vymene lokomotivy...Domazlice-posledna zastavka na ceskom uzemi...mozno by bolo celkom zaujimave pripajanie dalsej supravy,ci vymena lokomotivy v Regensburgu z nastupista...je vidiet,ze tuto trasu si neabsolvoval po prvykrat a bol si na nu pripraveny a sumar cesty na konci aj s cenovymi relaciami je tiez super...za mna urcite palec hore

      Díky moc! Já právě začal dávat informace v titulcích do pasáží, které podle analýz (které vidím v administraci každého videa) lidé nejvíc přeskakovali.. ale budu se snažit to vmáčknout někam do míst, kde se jede u protihlukové stěny apod.. Ta Plzeň tam to bylo složitější, několikrát mi vlezli do kupé lidi co se ptali, jestli to jede na Cheb nebo Domažlice .. a co se týče výměny loko, to se dá u velkoprostorového vozu, kde mám místenku a je tam hodně volných míst, u kupé když jedu sám a vylezu v těchto uzlových stanicích, tak mi většinou někdo to kupé obsadí (bohužel Alex má jen 3 kupé jedničky). Ale sám bych to chtěl do budoucna nějak vymyslet protože mě samotného baví sledovat přepřahy.. Jinak ano, trasu jsem už párkrát jel (ikdyž jedu raději přes Cheb, což je pohodlnější, ikdyž s přestupy). Každopádně díky moc za názory, vždy jsem rád, když mi lidi napíšou co by rádi viděli nebo změnili :-)

    Jsou to hezká videa,též mám rád vlaky,ale neustále ukazovat kolik je místa pro nohy atd.mi přijde zbytečné.Však nikdo neví kolik autor měří zda 160 či 190.Uvítal bych více krajiny,ale je to věc autora.Každopádně budu videa od pana Brandyho odebírat dále.

      Díky :-) No pravidelný divák co kouká na celá videa ví, že píšu skoro v každém videu, kolik měřím, tj. u všech videí z velkoprostoru.. konkrétně v tomto videu to píšu v části kde ukazuju vůz 2. třídy ČD :-D No většina lidí právě nejvíce sleduje záběry z vlaku jako je průchod soupravou, souprava z vnějšku a sedadlo.. a právě záběry z jízdy dost lidí přeskakuje (vidím to v analýzách ke každému videu).

      well Railjet doesn't operate on that route. Also I indeed prefer the ALEX simply for the old cars having super comfortable seat, seems like they have old style springs in the seat; Also being able to sldie down the windows like that is a feature hardly seen anywhere these days.
      Also the double-deck coach is a very modern one, bright lights, hard seats, low floor obviously. ALEX provides very good service with these trains and I definetly choose them over the regional express trains from Nuremberg via Regensburg to Munich

      I wrote "Y" with note: *depends on train composition. It means both ČD coaches are always Wi-Fi enable, when is in train composition Alex ABbmdz coach (which is usually planned), this coach also have Wi-Fi, also Alex ABvmz are usually Wi-Fi enable (mine was). The only Alex Bmz and Bm coaches has no Wi-Fi, so it means 75% of my train had Wi-Fi.

    This was the worst train i have ever had. I would never travel with alex again. Overcrowded, no organisation, no place to buy a seat, slow and old. Aaand overpriced!
