It's my favorite woman from the 1980s. She rocked! That riff that her husband Neal was doing was amazing. They are so good together. They see still married and touring together
RSR - Pat was an opera singer who hooked up with a gutarist named Neal, who saw her potential as a "rocker". He wrote most of her hits ( except this one ), he's the guitarist in this video, and they are still married ( and sometimes still tour ).
I saw her live in San Diego two days after 9/11. It was a small venue of maybe 200 people. Everyone was pretty much freaked out from the events and I remember her saying that she had second thoughts about doing the show and then decided it was better that we push through. She then proceeded to sing our national anthem a-cappella, which gave me chills because it was so beautiful and crisp . Keep in mind she is trained to sing opera.
I lived in San Diego at that time. I remember the fear. I worked near the Navy docks and we thought we were going to get bombed. I am glad she decided to perform and you got to see her!
I was underway from San Diego the morning of 9/11. It was supposed to be for two days of missile tests, but turned into 22 days as West Coast Air Defense Commander.
Patricia Mae Giraldo (Pat Benatar) has been married to her guitarist, Neil Giraldo, since 1982. They write together, and play together, and both are in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame!
OMG y'all, you have no idea what a core memory you just unlocked in me! I'm Gen X and remember seeing this video for the first time on MTV when I was 14. She was the epitome of womanhood to me as well as a style icon along with Annie Lennox and Siouxsie Sioux. Pat Benatar is EPIC. Thanks for the reaction! Now, may I please suggest The Warning for Female Friday? Consider yourselves warned!
Same. This triggered a memory of just walking down the street in the summer time with people blasting their stereos out of the windows of their houses in the early 80s and Pat Benatar would be a constant sound ( and I lived in the ghetto, mind you). It really is a phenomenon that she is so rarely heard now when her band was HUGE for a couple years straight.
Original by the Young Rascals, 1966. That's well worth checking out, if you did not already. Pat has the style to deliver this tune. Thank you for that description, Amber. Nice. Thanks Guys.
Pat actually had vocal training in opera so she has great vocal range. When she had Neil Geraldo audition for her guitarist she knew he was the sound she was looking for and of subsequently the man in her life. They have been married now for 41 years so they have been an exception to so many failed celebrity marriages. I saw her on the Crimes of Passion tour in the Paramount Theater in Seattle(before the renovation) and it was a great show. To show how long ago it was my ticket was less than $8.00!
That's rock n roll, baby! From her second album, I can remember putting that record on and hearing it on my stereo for the first time. I turned it up loud enough to shake the house!
And guess what guys this is debut Pat Benatar on MTV when MTV first aired and started they only had around a dozen videos just playing on rotation and this was one of them. This is how we met Pat.
Fun Fact: You Better Run was the second music video played on MTV. This is important because American record companies (refused to produce) music videos. This is why 90% of the music videos aired on MTV in 1981 were British. In the American Music Industry, the consensus was that MTV wouldn't last a year. But once MTV aired, it changed the music industry overnight. The song, "Video Killed the Radio Star" was a self-fulfilling prophecy. Pat Benatar's Album (Crimes of Passion) sold out and went into the top five, and she went from playing Civic Centers and Auditoriums to selling out Stadiums. Several music executives were fired for losing market share because they refused to produce music videos.
That's interesting. Videos definitely had an exponential rise in popularity, I remember Rod Stewart benefitted from having some videos ready for MTV, even though the production quality was pretty bad.
Martina McBride grew up idolizing Pat Benatar. Consequently, she can belt out a tune in a similar fashion. Independence Day is probably my fav from her. Pat is a trained opera singer. You can hear classical influenced in the intro to Shadows of the Night. Her music got a lotta resistance by the radio stations. I remember in concert, they were talking about how the excuse was the audience didn't want that much guitar. Can you imagine? Fortunately for us, she broke through.
I saw Pat Benatar live in 1980 on the tour supporting this album. It was a smaller theatre, so I was not far from the stage. The band was excellent. Pat Benatar was a big thing for a few years. I thought she should have been a chart topper for a longer time. I remember I liked Neil Giraldo her guitarist quite a bit as well. Benatar did a great version of John Cougar Mellencamp's "I Need A Lover" and the songs I remember most from the first few albums were Hit Me With Your Best Shot and Heartbreaker. Thanks for reacting to this hit.
Thank you, Jay and Amber, for reacting to this classic song by Pat and Neil! I was in high school from 1979-1983, which is the same era that she came blasting onto the scene. Women needed someone to kick down the barriers we faced (since forever), and Pat was the one to do it for us. With Neil also writing and performing with her, the guys who needed these messages HAD to take notice. She was the voice many of us didn't realize we could actually have, especially when being downplayed and mistreated because of being women. She was the social voice, wrapped in a musically phenomenal voice, that the world needed. It usually takes extremes for authentic conversations to finally be had. She was our exceptional point-maker.
She has always been one of my absolute favorites. My head will never reconcile that sound coming out of that tiny, little body! And I love that she and her guitarist hubby are still jamming together decades later. Please add their track Fire & Ice to your list. Happy Holidays!
The lead guitarist is Neil 'Spyder' Giraldo who helped co-write and produce Pat Benatar's songs and also became her husband and father of her children. They r still a married couple today. They started out as friends & collaborators in 1979 - she was an aspiring singer ... and he was a session musician + songwriter... Pat Benatar claimed that she knew early on that he was the one (She had been married and got divorced because she wanted a career in music) and they eventually became a couple and married in 1982.
I fell in love with Pat and her music when I was 13 yo. Back then there not many women who could rock like her. Women in hard rock was an anomaly back then
If you want another hard rocking female Friday Bsby Animals - Painless (92) Singer Suze DeMarchi is absolute 🔥 think a heavier Pretenders. Unfortunately timing was not on their side. Soon after this album came our Grunge took over. Personally think they could have essily surved the 90's. I saw them live and they were killing!! 🔥
For me, this is my favortie PB song. This kicks ass! She shows off her rock attitude and bad ass vocals. Good stuff. And...she is gorgeous! One of my crushes from the late 70's/early 80's.
Pat Benatar truly is the queen of voice. She could sing anything and blow it out of the park. Truly a vocal prodigy that took her own unique path. Truly her and Neil Giraldo are music royalty for a reason. timeless and excellent music. Us hardcore benatar fans are still patirntly waiting for another studio album from her and the band. It's been well over 20 years now. At least we have the back catalog
Had that ABSOLUTE honor of seeing this Great Rocker live. Such a high energy performer. I believe she was an opera or classical singer before she went into rock. Lucky for all of us.
You always go into a PB song you've never heard before wondering what Neil's gonna do. Because in every one of 'em, his guitar is equally important to what Pat does. Jay smooshing his left headphone into his ear during the solos. Sigh. Y'all are so cute when something hits hard like this. Love ya.
Can't Imagine music without Pat Benatar let alone rock! One of the preeminent Goddesses of Pop/Rock and with a band like that there's no other place but heaven!
"Linda, that girl looks just like Pat Benatar." "I know. Wait, there are three girls here at Ridgemont who have cultivated the Pat Benatar look." Fast Times At RIdgemont High (1982).
I love Myron, the drummer in this video. He used to be an absolute animal behind the drum kit! During concerts his kit had to be strapped down because he would climb on it, jump on it, swung from it, and whatever else he could think of!
There are many amazingly talented female rockers, but Pat Benatar is my absolute favorite !! The sound that comes out of her petite frame just blows my mind. She was the first concert I ever went to and when she comes to one of my local venues, I am there. ! If I am not mistaken, I've seen her in concert five times. Thankfully, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame included her husband in their induction, because they belong there !! 😊😊
I remember her from my teens and she was right up there for me, in terms of rocking females - along with Suzie Quatro. You guys would love Pat's "Fire and Ice". That was a huge hit in Australia, back in the day. Another awesome female vocalist was in the band Promises and the song "Baby It's You" is awesome. ❣
Pat Benatar's rendition of "You Better Run" holds a special place in rock history, not only for its powerful performance but also for its interesting origin. The song, originally written by a relatively lesser-known artist, was penned by a musician named Ray Brigati. Interestingly, "You Better Run" wasn't initially intended for Pat Benatar. Instead, it was popularized by The Young Rascals in the 1960s. However, it wasn't until the early 1980s that Pat Benatar took the song and infused it with her signature energy, turning it into a standout track on her album "Crimes of Passion." This decision showcased Benatar's ability to reinterpret and breathe new life into classic tunes, a talent that contributed significantly to her success as a rock icon. So, the next time you listen to "You Better Run," remember that this dynamic anthem has roots that trace back to the 1960s, with Pat Benatar giving it a bold and unforgettable resurgence in the '80s.
@@allanlangdon7237 The term "lesser known" is an adjective phrase used to describe something that is not widely recognized or familiar to the general public. She was so beautiful and sassy which made her all that more appealing to listen to and to look at. She was one of my first crushes Farrah Fawcett was my first.
Pat is amazing. This is one of her best rockers and covers. I grew up with The Young Rascals hit from 1966. She did I Need A Lover by John Cougar Mellencamp and Don't Let It Show by The Alan Parsons Project on her first album. Then she tackled Helter Skelter on her Precious Time album.
Those first two albums had a bunch of great cover songs. There are live versions on You Tube of "No You Don't" by Pat and Sweet. Both versions are great.
FYI. I just read pat benater, Was a trained opera singer. But. She was interested in singing rock and roll. So her boyfriend (later her husband and band guitar player ect.) Taught her to sing rock and roll!!
Let’s all agree that Pat Benatar is among a few artists that had substance and had something to say. Her songs came from being in an abusive marriage who, at this point in her career, was long been divorced from. However, her guitarist, Neil Giraldo kept asking her out to which she turn down until one day she gave in only to fall in love and have been married for over thirty years. The couple have two daughters to which Pat stopped singing and performing to raise her family. Now, Pat and Neil are back touring and have been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame which has been long over due in my opinion. I love Hell is for Children and may I suggest for your next Pat Benatar reaction to react to the song and my second favorite sing by her, Fire and Ice. Her voice is incredible and this song displays her vocal range. But no matter what you decide to watch I will be looking forward to. Take care and have a blessed Christmas to you and yours. - Gene A.
The only thing that can match the great song is the amazing look that Pat has here ! .. She has her classic pixie hairstyle and face, and she has all the pouting and kickass attitude she is famous for .. Sexy as hell and putting out absolutely fantastic music too .. She had it all !
She was absolutely blazing and her band was so good. The hard rockers like to, the pop people liked, it pulled in quite a good overlap of demographics.
Pat Benatar's Mom was a Trained Opera Singer and Pat developed a voice at an early age, singing in school. At one time she sang commercial jingles for Pepsi. This was the second ever Music Video ever shown on MTV in the very beginning.
I had this on videotape in 1981 when few homes had a VCR in it and there were no video rental stores yet, and I watched that video over and over. This was definitely her peak era. The video was the second ever played on MTV.
Fun fact .....this was the 2nd music video played when MTV launched back in 1981 🔥🔥🔥🔥
The first being Video Killed the Radio Star!
This video was huge.
The first was Aha, Take on Me!

- Gene A.
Excellent comment !! One thousand thumbs up 👍
I play this one when my husband makes me furious. She helps me get him to go to his room.
She's fierce just like me. I love this one.

One of her best no doubt!!
Saw Pat Benatar this past summer in Boston - she still sounds great!
The only thing that can match the great song is the amazing look that Pat has here ! .. She has her classic pixie hairstyle and face, and she has all the pouting and kickass attitude she is famous for .. Sexy as hell and putting out absolutely fantastic music too .. She had it all !
Pat has tons of fun songs. My favorite is "We Live For Love".
Takes me back to being a kid & singing this in my hairbrush in front of my mirror! Lol
One of my favorites from Pat. Great reaction!
Pat is one of the greatest of all time... 😎
We had it all!!! Rock, Disco, Rap, New Wave, Hip Hop, Underground club music; a perfect time to be young ❤
I saw her live several times...she NEVER disappoints!
One of favorites song by her. Well composed, that guitar solo at the end was fire!
I had this on videotape in 1981 when few homes had a VCR in it and there were no video rental stores yet, and I watched that video over and over. This was definitely her peak era. The video was the second ever played on MTV.
