I heard about this film on NPR and I can tell all of you guys/gals out there that this is not a man hating feminist film. It's literally about the directors life and how his mother and the other woman in his life helped him become the man he is today.
Michael Pless it was a damn fine movie! Just caught it on Amazon. AND it has one of the best articulations of the punk movement I’ve ever heard!
@@jonathanoneill8011 YES!!! my parents grew up in Santa Barbara during this time and always went down to LA to go to shows. They were at the black flag show at sunset blvd where police surrounded the venue with batons to beat the shit out of kids in riot gear. They kept also saved some of the fliers raymond pettibon drew that they put up in Redondo and Hermosa Beach.
🤢
Not a “”man hating feminist film””? That’s a shame. We need more of those.
Man hating feminist movie? Says more about you than everything else. If priviledge is taking away the oppressor feels unfair.
if this was released in 2017 early 2018 that little boy could easily snatch timothee chalamet's wig effortlessly
ABsolutely!!! watch him in Anne of Green Gables/netfx

What about him?
Is that how I recognize him?😅. I thought it was him or the kid from White Lotus season 2 if he grew a lot. 😅
This comment section will always be here to reassure me that sexism is very very real and will probably never go away for as long as we live
Tiny Sarah - The video already reminded you of that, when it said men are unnecessary, that women don't need husbands and children don't need fathers.
customsongmaker that's terrible lmao
customsongmaker but that’s true. men don’t need women either. who cares lol get over yourself
@@lozza821 , but that's not true. Get over yourself.
See what I did there?
Oh be quiet
This movie isnt even about feminism. Its just about a second hand family in the 70's its just about connecting to the characters. The plot is obscure and hidden and its what makes this movie great. Theres only like 20 minutes in this movie thats about feminism. Its a simply elegant movie and better then the super hero movies that are pumped out 24/7
Mary Elizabeth Bauer - This movie is about how the government pays women with men's tax money, so that women can pretend they don't need men.
customsongmaker no it dosnt. I saw it, its really good
I Love this movie but why Bash on super Hero movies I need some escapism in my life but need movies like this one too
And what if it is about feminism?
I don't get it- why the hate? It's just some persons indie film probably about their single mom. It's just a fucking film. No ones forcing a matriarchy here.
It's probably a potential Oscar contender, so I'm assuming why it's trending.
Oval Teen sure, and it's all just locker talk no ones forcing anything there.
MGTOW
I'm getting so much attention! People care so much
Oval Teen "Some person's". Mike Mills is a pretty well known director even though he makes one movie every six years. Go watch "Beginners", it's an absolute masterpiece.
***** Oh cool. Thanks for informing me. ;)
Smh, the women-hate in this comment section is ridiculous. Apparently you can't even make a movie with the word "women" in the title without accusations of having a "feminazi" agenda and triggering the egos of insecure dudes. I loved "Beginners", can't wait for this one.
Charlotte Oh my god. Come on now. Don't bullshit. You know damn well this movie will have tons of man hating in it, as you got a glimpse of during this trailer.
Charlotte I can't question when a film generalizes men?
Reece Daniels I have one question for you. Give me the answer for that one first. Did you grow up in a normal family, a functional one, with your father and mother??
THE MELLOW FELLOW even if a movie is man hating(which this movie isn't), I think it's fair considering how sexist the history of cinema has been towards women
movie had no man hating at all.
This movie is probably about women apreciation, feminism and how women helps men in their daily life and I love it! Probably one of my favorite films from this year, from the music to the cinematography, to the script and the quotes just, outstanding!
Yes!! 3 years later and it’s still my all time favorite film
“...The people who help you, they might not be who you thought or wanted, they might just be the people who show up.”
Am I the only one who actually liked this trailer ??? lol
Yes

This trailer is my life.
Boy, Annette Bening just gets better and better. No matter how hard she trys to make herself look "unattractive" for a part, her natural beauty still shines through. I cannot wait to see this.
I just watched her in Nyad (which isn't getting the best reviews, which is a shame), and Bening is amazing. She is fearless in her choice of roles and her performance choices)
This story got under my skin in the best of ways. All the players are incredible; a true ensemble cast with amazingly nuanced performances. And perhaps the best use of music in a film I have seen in a long time. Some truly funny and poignant lines that I had to stop the film so I could jot down. Just lovely writing.
This is easily one of the greatest movies ever made
I absolutely adored this movie
"Whatever you think your life is going to be like, just know it's not going to be anything like that" Greta Gerwig
That hit me like a brick.
"God SJW's these days get triggered over anything!" *Releases movie trailer with women in lead role* "REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE"
davesnapper wow people really get triggered when they see women enjoying things with women. The lead actors are both famous feminists I think you might be a bit sensitive.

Can't understand the hate. For me this looks like a really lovely movie!
And it is! I really recommend it - very touching and personal, no agenda whatsoever imo. Just one of the best and most complex films I've seen in a long time!
where is the hate?
well the 70s sucked, it was what came after that was truly mind blowing, it does illustrate how naive and innocent those times were that led up to the more complicated but rewarding 80s. I don't dislike it, but I like others am reminded about my own life and how much it sucked, i can relate to the boy, divorce and just malaise in general, it was fun but at the same time it was naive time in my life. If people hate this film they likely didn't live through it or simply misunderstand the point of it. feminism was a part of the 70s but not everything, this film covers it all including feminism, but that doesn't mean it's only about that subject, that's merely one perspective of many in the post modern mess of the 70s. Also not knowing what to do was not fun, it reminds me of people today that think men can have babies or that not even a supreme court nominee can define a woman, a whole lot of bs and confusion very similar to that same time period, this was all understood and dealt with tin the 80s, we all had better lives, that was the solution to the confusion. I just hope people can figure their way out of this current malaise, repeating the 70s is not worth it. Maybe the rock was good, but whatever 80s rock was good too.
the second i saw this i knew there would be comments about The Evil Feminists taking over Hollywood
not "taking over hollywood", just "making more bad movies"
jon butler *took over Hollywood. Taking would imply they don't currently control it :)
if the feminists took over then how come casey affleck is still in movies
where? srsly where?

This is one of the best movies that I have seen. I loved the way how the mother sees things and I loved the way how each character is portrayed. If you are looking for a movie with a vibe and something to think of, this is the one.
7 years late. But never too late for brilliance. Thank You to the entire team for this one. Thanks A24. You bring movies I don't want to forget.
"a crisis of confidence" was perhaps the greatest diagnosis of the period.
How beautiful!! Can't wait! What a wonderful cast and vision!! HM

Why would he be joking? It looks like a really good film.

This isn't about hating men, it's about the perspective of a mother and her connection with her son. It is completely the opposite of hating men. Many people in the comments are using deductive reasoning by assuming that since feminists critique men and the mother critiques men in the movie, then the whole movie must be some evil liberal/feminist propaganda.
None of us have even seen the movie, yet we're assuming all of this from what is presented in the trailer. Yes, a trailer is a way to show what the movie's about, but that doesn't mean that the only thing it is about is women hating men. That's a hollow and simple-minded notion that consists mostly of logical fallacies and poor reasoning.
Don’t remember this episode of Anne With an E😳
I LOVED this movie! the cinematography, acting, music characters, everything was just... beautiful.
This movie was wonderful, such a blissful movie that invites important self reflection. I had the privilege to see it on an enormous screen and I look forward to watching it again on smaller ones.
*sees 20+ comments complaining about men hating on this trailer*
*sees no “butthurt men” or hateful comments*
They were all hidden or removed
All these comments prove to me that men really hate women. Anything that centers the female experience like this gets berated with comments like the ones under this video.
hotrod275 no. we dont hate women centered movies. in fact some of the greatest horror films (alien, aliens) and even epics (gone with the wind) are women centered. but the problem is that this movie is basically trying to make guys look bad and a burden while they whine and bitch. in the end, without guys, there wont be a society. men fought for the freedoms and comforts for women to enjoy and they made many different things like jobs like easier for them, yet they complain that men are the biggest problem.
RDPublicfeatures
You are projecting your insecurity. Nowhere in this trailer suggested women hating men. Actually, pretty much the opposite, seeing as she wants to raise her son the best she can.
Kevin O'Connell basically by not letting a man into her life because she doesnt know how to choose and keep a good man. men and women are just not the same. no matter how much “equality” we have, theres always going to be high expectations placed on boys while they get ridiculed and discriminated. are you on trend with the mainstream media?
I'm struggling to connect anything you are saying to a main point. What is the relevance of anything you are saying?
You're trying to tell women that they are wrong, but you are the ones dismissing them without listening.
I watched this movie yesterday, I guess I'm a little late. But, oh my God, it was beautiful. Yall should watch it.

Great movie! Highly recommend.
"And now its 1979, and nothing means anything" this line for me epitomised the entire movie.
Yeah i knew that time very well, it was wholly unsatisfying period of life for me.
You know I came into this movie thinking it was trying to be biased against men to appeal to women. But the movie wasn’t it. It was just about a single mother, a son reaching a turning point in his life, a lost mechanic, a girl who sleeps around in life, and an overcoming hardship photographer.
Nothing in the movie scream pushing feminist agendas or hate against men. In fact I would have never thought about it if I didn’t peaked at the comment section.
This movie is a real and beautiful depiction of the different types of people growing up and dying and there’s no overly dramatic scene for the climax just a depiction of life and that what makes this movie so remarkable!
Oscar noms for Annette Bening for sure.....
I watched the film last night, and I LOVED it, so fucking much.
SHE's REALLY ONE OF THE BEST - HAIL ANNETTE BENNING THE GODDESS! GIVE HER AN OSCAR SOON.
This is the only movie that has ever made me cry
the trailer really doesnt do the movie justice; it makes it seem as though its aimed at sending a message about feminism, but its more about a child's growth and relationship with his mother and the people around him. really worth a watch
I was the guy in the back thunderously applauding Mike Mills' answer to the last question of the Q and A at Museum of the Moving Image (before the 35mm screening of Beginners). Pure entertainment!
When I think of 20th century women, the 1950s golden era tyoe pops into my head. Not 1980s but whatever
These comments are despicable. Preparing to hate a film without putting real thought into your decision to post a comment about how bad this film looks, because it seems like it was made by a feminist.
What a pathetic lot of you. Why is feminism a bad thing? It's not! Sure, certain stances, and angles may be misguided, but feminism is a well-intentioned thing. This director found it necessary to tell a story of a teenager who lives this portion of his life surrounded by women. Women who may serve a respectable role, or guide in his young adulthood. That's great! It seems like a totally fresh angle, and given that it takes place in the late 70's, it'll probably serve some nostalgic purposes as well.
Yes, film critics will probably like this film... actually they already do. Did you ever stop to think that maybe that is because it is a legitimately good film? That's my bet. If you don't believe that, maybe research a little. And see what it is about the film that people seem to like.
Why must you always create a string of toxic, and meaningless comments that add nothing of value to the conversation.
Grow up.
For me, it's not the quality of the film (which looks great), but about the agenda that is being pushed here. Which is the feminist agenda. Which is almost never a good thing, especially for people like me. In the beginning, Feminism had good intentions. As time passed, the objectives for Feminism were reached. But the movement didn't dissolve. Instead they kept pushing for more rights (which were actually special privileges), went against biology, demonized half of the human race, and redefined words just to suit their arguments.
This is why you see so much hate.
Now for me, I think the movie looks good and am going to see it. But I go to see it wishing it could just be a good story and not a part of a narrative.
+Reid _Thank you._ All these butthurt comments by anti-feminist idiots are seriously pissing me off - they have no idea what they’re talking about, or what they movie's even about, for god’s sake. I watched the movie yesterday, and you’re completely right - it _is_ a very fresh, lovely angle about childhood and I loved it. You seem like the only person in this comment section with any sense at all, so thank you. I’m so with you :)
@@lou-xr5rz you sound kinda... butthurt. Your comment is seriously pissing me off - you have no idea what you are talking about.
See how bad that sounds?
BTW, you're not the only one here who's watched the movie. And the ONE person who you found to agree with your opinion is definitely not the only one with any sense. That is the mentality of a 12 year old. Your comment is more ignorant than the comments you refer to.
Is this a movie that im going to watch over and over and over and over again?
The ending if this movie was amazing it made me feel so weird afterwards.
Wow such a diverse group of......hair colours for a film called 20th century women
From the title, I legit thought it was about women from different backgrounds in the 20th century.
It's based on the story of the directors upbringing, who happens to be white. So...I don't think casting Viola Davis to play his Mom would have made sense.
Lynne Parks Yeah when they say, "women" don't you know they mean white women? Human beings=white people. Everyone else is a minority. LOL. Brown people are the MAJORITY both in the great USA and globally. Someone forgot to give white people the memo.
It's literally just the title of a film. Not even a documentary...not sure why we're getting so worked up over an artists personal vision. Filmmakers shouldn't have to compromise their work just to be "inclusive" & make everybody happy first and foremost. It's their story, they can and should do whatever they want.
No one is getting "worked up" racism is just a fact in the US and globally. So it shows up all over and I was commenting on that. So called artists should not make so-called "art" if they can't handle commentary on their bs movies with bs titles.
Why all the hate for this trailer huh? are the ghostbusters bros back at it again?
this looks like a great movie with THE ANNETTE BENING & there's no blatant "I hate men" theme.
God this is just about a woman raising her child? what's wrong with that?
Alright, Ghostbusters had little to do with sexism and everything to do with a shitty trailer.
Why exactly didn't Annette Benning win all the awards for this? One of the most incredible performances I've seen recently.
Awesome flick! Nice to see a character driven window into the "not-so-perfect" lives of regular everyday people.
This movie is virtually perfect
I'm so confused about everyone in the comments, why are y'all so butthurt ? The movie looks fine, not amazing, but I'd check it out. Definitely doesn't deserve all the shit it's getting, wtf
THANK YOU.
I watched this movie and it was beautiful and it made me cry
"An actress that you've never heard of". Are you kidding? Annette Bening is one of the most beloved actors in Hollywood. Greatly admired by her peers and loved by her fans world-wide. Save yourself from future embarrassment, do your research before posting about a "no one has ever heard of" actress that has had 50 wins and another 98 nominations for her work. I will share with you my personal favorite of Ms. Bening's movies, "The American President" with Michael Douglas and Martin Sheen. GREAT movie!
As far as all the feminist crap postings, I will leave that to those who think they know it all ;)
I've watched both trailers 100+ plus times I can't wait till it comes out :)
People in the comment section: “Bro these comments are so sexist smh they haven’t even watched the movie and are complaining that the cast is mostly made up of women”
The actual comment section: “WOW this movie was really good highly recommend it”, “Came here because of Tyler”, “Mike Mills at his best”
this was a wonderful film i hope all the misogynists upset about its existence in comments below perish upset. greta gerwig and annette bening acting opposite each other and the writing is interesting and layered? a fucking dream
also in a just world annette bening or viola davis would have won the best actress oscar that year, but neither of them were even nominated in that category which is just nonsense

Did somebody post this to an MRA subreddit? Why the hell are all the comments a bunch of triggered dudes. This movie looks great. December can't come soon enough. And what does it say about you if you seek out a trailer for a movie you're not interested in just to post a negative comment? That you've too much time on your hands and project your insecurities about changing social mores onto (really good) movie trailers you didn't even need to watch? Please let me know if I'm wrong.

Keep your hate speech off my campus!
Reece Daniels Oh. So you were actually living under a rock. Its a fucking meme for God's sake!!
"That's slightly off topic" nobody talked like that in 1979
cindylou what. 1975 wasnt the 40 they didnt use different terms and slang back then. its pretty much the same as now.
No it isn't
"What does that even mean?" is another example of anachronistic dialogue.
It's a real challenge to write dialogue for things set in the recent past. People are really unaware of the extent to which contemporary colloquialisms are just that: contemporary.
I suppose it helps to make the material more relatable to audiences, but it does really stick out sometimes.
A good movie doesn't have to try that hard to be relatable to audiences
That family did.
I can't wait to see this movie!!!! Crazy how I just found out about this !!
Just give it to me now, A24!
Phenomenal movie!
Great film......had to order it on Ebay, as it never came to the cinema in Ireland

Loved this film. It's excellent.
Honestly I just came here for Lucas.
Surprised about the hate in the comments section. Honestly this being some "feminist" movie never crossed my mind watching the trailer. I just see a movie with a good cast, late 70s setting and some cool Talking Heads and Buzzcocks songs. It could very well be terrible or a feminist propaganda movie, but just judging from the trailer, I'm intrigued.

Great film! I fell in love with Gerwig.
And all I wanna know is the name of the song playing on this trailer.
Oscar Sanchez “The Big Country” by Talking Heads
I came here because I loved this movie and was wondering who people considered to be the protagonist in this story- the mom or the son?
And while here I learned there are many boys , (many of them in big boy pants but still behave like boys) who can't cope with a movie about interpersonal relationships regardless of gender but especially if it has a strong female character.
Plenty of movies out there full or dragons, armored males and zombies. Sad how some boys get triggered at a mere trailer for something different.
This comment section is legitimately making me upset about humanity

So I started reading the comments here. Obviously, the childless, bitter and overreacting crowd got to see this trailer and vomit their silliness on to this comments section.
This great actress (Oscar winner) Annette Benning plays the mom, btw, is actually shelling out legit truths. Honestly.....
If you don't get it then, you still have a long way to go. I bid you a tough cranium.
she never won an Oscar!!!!!
Holy shit how can people be this ignorant and spiteful?? This is my favourite movie this year and let me tell you it has no feminist "agenda" whatsoever (what does that even mean?). It is a deep and complex portrayal of several characters, two young women, one teenage boy and one adult man revolving around the mum character; just showing humans in all their differences and common points. It focuses on age more than gender actually - growing up and getting old. Why would it be anything else?? The movie The Nice Guys wasn't about "men in a manly atmosphere", nobody complained about the title to my knowledge - what is this here? How can you judge so much without watching?
Julie (Elle Fanning) belongs to the streets in this movie
what's the song at the beginning ?
