    Do you mean Asclepias syriaca as Milkweed? It is a common invasive species in Central Europe, we have a lot of it here, I use it mostly as good edible plant, I like the cooked flowers and young shoots and I use the fibers from the stem as sinew replacement and the fluff for starting a fire, but I haven't thought of nitrating it yet. Interesting!

    Im working on a very simmilar video! Which is a continuation to my woodpulp video.
    Actually it is better than cotton. The reason i think is the shorter fibers.
    Also it might be acting as a capillary to almost suck up the acid. It is supposed to have a higher N% compared to cotton thats why its used in smokless powders.

    • @darianballard2074
      @darianballard2074  3 года назад +1

      Smokeless power still uses cotton, some may also use wood. The reason the wood has more snap to it is because of nitration of lignans. Not only that there may nitration levels than can be achieved when nitrating cotton. The most common way of making gun cotton ( nitrocellulose ) is the weakest version. Nitrocellulose with a low degree of nitration is applied in paints, lacquers, varnishes, inks, etc., while nitrocellulose with a high degree of nitration (>12.5%) is used in explosives. Within the nitrocellulose containing explosives are included dynamites and propellants. www.researchgate.net/publication/264081362_NITROCELLULOSE_IN_PROPELLANTS_CHARACTERISTICS_AND_THERMAL_PROPERTIES

      @@darianballard2074 that makes sense. I was looking at some old ww2 era files about NC and single based propellants. And it said wood and other plant fibers achive a higher degree of nitration than cotton does and it creates a much higher quality smokless powder for millitary aplications. It also may be used because its cheaper and can be produced on a larger scale.

      That would depend on what you're mixing and what its used for. Also weather or not you're using a blasting cap to set it off or just a fuse.

    Hello Darian!! How's going? Good Video!!!!
    Two questions, why not ice bath while nitration? And that nitric acid is made by yourself? Is bit yellow. Now you can mix that nitrated cotton with egdn, and you Will have dynamite. Best regards

    • @darianballard2074
      @darianballard2074  3 года назад +1

      Thanks and its going okay. I don't use an ice bath because you need some heat to make this reaction work and yes I make the Nitric acid. Here is a video on how its made. www.bitchute.com/video/RmEAthmxztgK/ As to mixing nitrocellulose with EDGN that makes a plastic not dynamite. Dynamite is nitroglycerin mixed with donations earth and some times uses a little EDGN in cold environments. Thanks for the questions and comments.
