1100 lb white granite elongated egg shaped rock being removed from my garden using 6 grams of PETN and a lead azide/PETN blasting cap. The rock was way bigger then it looked do to its shape and the PETN shattered it all the way to the tip 2 1/2 feet into the ground. Thanks @christophermichaud7187 for letting me use your drill bit.

Fun video. XPN made a very good dent, with a detonation velocity (m/s) 7,100 and Test Density (g/cm3) 1.85 But the PETN is king, with a Detonation velocity (m/s) 8,400 and Density (g/cm3) at 1.76.

    UV makes ozone and trace Nitric Oxides, It is the trace Nitric acid that is giving you the nitrate, So you need to make a birkeland eyde reactor Generator feeding it Ozone may improve nitric acid yield, but in general dry air with no CO2 will give best yield I'd wager.

    You could try building a small jacobs ladder inside a 3 neck rbf using a neon sign transformer to power it, then pass air through the flask with gas take off adapters and that will boost your nitric oxides

    I don't understand the chemistry, you're reacting ammonium hydroxide with ozone? That would make nitrogen, water and oxygen. I'm assuming that you are oxidising the nitrogen somehow to form dilute acid with but this would be very inefficient under normal conditions, you mention uv and a heat lamp. Have you considered hv discharge like in a birkeland eyed reactor. That would form more NOX and disolve in the water vapour to form nitric acid that will react with the ammonia, perhaps. Am I right that it's just photo disassociation of oxygen, there's no other photocatalytic reaction or is the ammonia also breaking up into hydrogen and amino radical? Good video

      The light was for heat in this experiment. You got me thinking that maybe the ox generator took to much nitrogen out of the air, lol It filters all but 10% of the nitrogen. I should have though of that.

    • @Refertech101
      @Refertech101 5 дней назад

      No the hydroxide is to generate ammonia gas. The UV makes very very very small traces of Nitric oxide.

    • @SodiumInteresting
      @SodiumInteresting 5 дней назад

      @Refertech101 yes I saw my mistake later, I meant to say ammonia gas. I made the comment at like 3am. But there will be ammonium hydroxide since water is a byproduct and the ammonia will disolve in that I would say that the uv provides the energy for oxygen to oxidize the ammonia to nitric oxides albeit inefficiently, ozone will decompose to diatomic and atomic oxygen which will oxidize ammonia to form nitrogen and water and also oxidize the said nitrogen. It's just that nitrogen doesn't readily oxidize without a sufficiently high energy. I think passing stream of these gasses through an electric arc wouod be a more efficient way. Generally the way you make ammonium nitrate is by reacting ammonia and nitric acid. This setup will probably be generating a huge excess of ammonia

    • @Refertech101
      @Refertech101 5 дней назад

      @@SodiumInteresting In UV sterilization systems Coronal discharge units will make trace, but even UV bulbs will as well due to free radical Oxygen generation just much less, moist air causes it more than dry air. Birkeland - Eyde process is deff the better way to go, as this is just using accidental trace production vs some thing intended to make Nitric oxide. You can make any Nitrate based off that as well, aside from the inherent inefficiencies of the Birkeland Eyde process, but that still nukes this get up in efficiency terms

    • @SodiumInteresting
      @SodiumInteresting 5 дней назад

      @Refertech101 good experiment though. It got me wondering how it works. Do you think air supply instead of oxygen would be better for this 🤔 or is the high oxygen concentration better for efficient rate of oxidising

    While KClO3 can release its oxygen faster in most situations, KClO4 is technically more powerful per gram however is more stable in a variety of environments and typically will release its oxygen at a more stable and steady rate, however in the right situations both can rapidly decompose such as what your doing here and the extra oxygen atom per mole makes itself known with that louder bang but like I said its harder to get it initiated to that explosive point than it is to do with KClO3

      Not really, I used to use sads a lot and if used correctly it’s a very good primary. In a loose powder state it isn’t very strong, but even with some minor compressions it becomes a lot more powerful. Regardless of strength it can and has many times before in my case, reliably initiated all sorts of secondary’s. It’s also pretty cheap and easy to make, along with being not too sensitive and pretty stable. Very good for beginners.

      SADS has low VOD around 2000m/s, but what makes it useful is its ability of acceleration to its peak maximum VOD in very short amount of time with little amount (when pressed), which is enough for initiating secondary compounds in blasting caps. Certain type of Flash powders also has also same VOD, but they can't reach their full potential in little amounts (it is possible but requires large amount of material) therefore makes them not useful for initiating . But in my opinion i hate SADS, i prefer NHN , much less sensitive and storage stable for long periods of time also can be mixed with ETN to form homogeneous primary mixture ready for blasting cap design.
