Jason has a way of distilling complex/nuanced topics down to their respective essences like no one I've ever heard. Still can't put my finger on it. A lucid, perceptive, forthright, standup guy if there ever was one. Kirk Hammett mentioned that one of Cliff Burton's basic tenets/guiding principles was fairness, and I think Jason carried that forward and kept it alive during his time in the band.

... AJFA was always my favorite Metallica record too. I love the cold sound on that. Just merciless brutal but intelligent metal. It really was their peak at doing pure thrash metal at this point, so it was necessary to change their style on the next album. Although I think God That Failed would've fit on Justice, based on that songs overall feel.

I learned how to play the first 30 seconds or so on guitar when I was 15 years old and now I'm 48 years old! So yeah me & you started listening to Metallica probably around the same time like in 1988 or early 1989! Probably around the same age as well! Thanks for sharing! There is no doubt about it when you hear an isolated mix of Justice with the bass and then level it to a audible level in the whole album it takes it to the next level and is spine chillingly unbelievably great and shows how great The album really is period. What a great album injustice is but it is missing the grunting howl that Jason was there to give. This is one of the biggest oversights in musical history for metal fans and cant believe Metallica have not corrected this travesty .Imagine 30 years down the line and you realise not enough attention was put into something that will outlast us all?.

Justice has always been my favorite Metallica album hands down. As a lifelong guitarist, I never understood why people say there is no bass on that album. I never even heard that complaint until the early 2,000's on the internet. Sure, it's not as loud as it is on later albums that are less heavy, but there is definately bass in the mix, and I am not talking about the low end on the guitars. You can hear it if you know what a bass actually sounds like, and have a decent ear for the clicking of the strings, and you can hear it mirroring the guitars. I think the Justice fan made remixes are not very good at all because the bass is too loud to the point that it doesn't complement the rest of the music, and it sounds unprofessional. Justice is supposed to sound the way it does. To be honest, it's funny to me how people never complained about Ride The Lightning, or Puppets. I think those albums sound iconic as hell, and I wouldn't change a thing about them, but they have a thinner sound than Justice, and it's not just because Justice has the heavier guitar riffs. When you are dealing with a lot of distortion, heavy kick drums, and rough vocals, the bass can be overshadowed. I would like someone to create a RUclips version, and take the bass completely out of And Justice For All so they can show critics the difference in the original mix, and how it would really sound without any bass in it. There would be a huge difference.

I keep hearing people say no bass even before justice. But I feel like at least in Ride the Lightning and Master of Puppets bass definitely was there, whereas Justice is much more tinny. But both of those albums have notable bass driven songs and, at least to my ear, a stronger bass sound (For Whom the Bell Tolls and Orion). I am no mixer, and so I don't know the technical details. I just know as a guitar player there is a heaviness present. A lot of other bands, especially outside thrash (but even within it), had plenty of bass. It isn't like 70s bands didn't incorporate bass and have a proper rhythm section. I think the thing that is true about thrash and metallica in particular is they didn't utilize the rhythm section the way it is done in other genres of rock and metal because its so guitar riff-centric. But the thing that was going on with Justice seems to me to be a whole different thing (like maybe a way of Eulogizing Cliff Burton).
One thing I do wonder about is the effect of this music being listened to in digital format on computer speakers has had on how people interpret this stuff. I grew up listening to tapes, records and CDs. And most of my impression of whether a mix was good or what things sounded like was shaped by that. Sometimes when I listen to a song on youtube or listen to a 2015 or 2012 mix, it feels really off.
