I'm so happy that there are videos like this on RUclips. Now I don't have to tear my Nintendo apart before I play it just to see what the inside looks like. 😀
In all the reveal NES CLASSIC EDITION vids I seen on youtube, not one person has commented on the screens background design.Incase you didn't notice it,it is of the topside of the NES.Just pointing out a small something is all.
I believe the Hynix chip is RAM, the TSOP spansion chip is a flash ROM, not sure on the R16 BGA mounted chip, perhaps a CPU / MCU (just based on its proximity to the RAM, and clearly has connectivity to the flash ROM). Also not sure on that qfp chip either, perhaps another MCU, glu logic maybe, HDMI output and USB host? I wonder if the ROM is encrypted, I guess the only way to hack these will be to dump the contents of the ROM and hope its not encrypted / signed code.
Hi :-) In order to share information I found about the hardware ^^ : It looks like the R16 chip is an ARM CPU/GPU chip. According to the specifications, it is an 4 cores 32bits ARM Cortex-A7 CPU [1] (video encoder/decoder for 1080p at 60 FPS) fitted with a MALI-400 MP2 GPU (4 shader at 500MHz) chip. The Hynyx chip should be a 2GB RAM chip according to the first letters in the reference numbers. The Spansion chip is a 1GB SLC NAND flash memory chip where the games and OS should be stored [2]. The AXP223 chip is a power regulator chip also delivering a clock frequency until 2MHz [3] (I assume for synchronising the games in NES NTSC version "emulation"). The R16 chip have ethernet capabilities but Nintendo seems to decide to not use the feature (e.g. for donwloading additional games). This chip have probably also in the charge the audio capabilities. I do not know how easy the customization of this device wiil be. It will be funny to try xD [1] www.allwinnertech.com/index.php?c=product&a=index&id=47 [2] pdf1.alldatasheet.fr/datasheet-pdf/view/514849/SPANSION/S34ML04G2.html [3] www.datasheetspdf.com/datasheet/AXP223.html
it's basically a RPI 3 with emulation station on it (yes different chips, similar specs!), you'd be better off investing your mony in an RPI 3 and a nes-classic usb controller and then installing retropie on it. you'll have a better nes-classic for the same price!
Thanks for this! I was very curious to see what the NES Mini had inside of it. Also when you put the controller up against the console it really gave a good idea as to its size.
There HAS to be some way to get more games/applications on it or hack it. What happens if you use the USB power cable and connect it to a PC? Can it be interacted with in any way or does it only have the pins required for power?
Jesse D it looks like a 4gb flash module. 30 games is not much space used. Though the Linux OS may be on it too, so who knows how much space that's used by it.
Thanks Dave. Yep the controller cable is way too short. I think a Wii U controller extension cable will work fine so ill pick up a few and test them out.
"Very careful not to cut the box!" Brilliant. For a few seconds my brain refused to believe you didn't say 'fingers' :D You must have been crazy excited for the NES :)
Hmmm...does this have NES Classic have different version base on region/country? on JerryRigEverything video the box are different and it comes with a power brick while in this video is without a power brick....
I picked one up in Europe, Portugal to be exact. It works on an American spec TV, no power adapter was included but I just plugged it in a TV USB port and bam it powered on.
The new Mega Drive doesnt have HDMI because it isnt a SOAC and therefore doesnt have the same limitations of emulation, but would become more expensive due to the modifications necessary to output that kind of signal. The insides will be as similar to the original as possible. I like how well this works on HDMI but I am a little upset that it doesn't have AV for the retro feel.
Yes, we need a teardown of that one too. Is it just the plug that is different from an original NES one, or is there some kind of more advanced controller involved?
An interesting little unit this is Global. I really would like to purchase this here in the U.S. for sure. Nice tear down video and thank you for sharing this with us. Anthony...
Allwinner R16 chip, so it's running on an ARM Cortex A7. Might be hard to hack as flash storage appears to be soldered onto the board, sure someone will figure out something though, they always do :).
Funny, the old NES is littered with resistors, caps, cmos chips, DACs, 10 or so ramchips with each a few kB and what not. New version, one custom cpu/gpu .A hynix DDR ram chip, some driver/opamps (bet for the usb 5v and hdmi), a bit of smd resistors/caps. And that's it!
the contoller is not exactly like thr original, it is slightly differently sized, also the connector is wii line in general, it works for a replacement for a classic controller, with less buttons of course, but it is still the same kind of circuit as the classic and gc like version of the classic for the wii but still does work on wii u
It's called an AC adapter because it converts (adapts) the AC line supply from your outlet to a DC regulated output. Here in the US, this has been the common terminology for at least all of my entire life (nearly 4 decades), and I'm sure for longer than that. Not sure if there's different regional terminology.
They wanted to keep the price as similar to the US price, as the shipping price is included in the price of it, so they did a few sacrifices. Most people here in the EU have a good few wall adapters anyways.
So ours here in Australia didn't come with the AC to DC adapter as you don't need it and it does seem like cost cutting. Any USB port works fine. Even the one on the side of my Samsung TV worked. We paid $99 AUD which is about $74 USD
Global Garage I'm curious as to why you correct the box where it says "AC adapter not included", in my understanding of the term AC adapter the AC bit refers to the fact the mains is AC regardless of whether the output of the adapter is AC or DC.
eyeball226 Just a dig at Nintendo, not really that serious. The console runs off a 5V DC cable from the USB port on my TV, so the AC adapter out of the wall is somewhat redundant. Yes the terminology is the same worldwide.
They should make another version, where the cartridge door opens and has a small nes cartridge that mico sd cards go into. Then be able to add more games or even game genie.
I do imagine that in a few months, we should start seeing YT videos showing up on how someone modified these to import more NES games. (Even if some will be tossing out the internal guts and replacing it with a Raspberry Pi to keep that classic case.)
I'm gonna get one just so I can pull the guts out and house my Raspberry Pi 2 which, as we all know, is a far better value to the NES Classic Edition. Nice Vid
I honestly just don't get it... why even consider modding this? It's a freaking ARM processor running an emulator. People have been doing this for years with PC's or a raspberry pi and usb NES, SNES, and 64 controllers. With the Pi you have 100% control over everything... People have even made awesome cases that you can print out if you own a 3d printer. www.thingiverse.com/thing:1035878 EDIT: Typos
This is a mass production model so I highly doubt it uses an FPGA. It would be cheaper to have a custom architecture IC production similar to the original however even cheaper is emulation and that's probably what it is.

Yes I know what you mean. I think it's input lag mainly, so the controllers have a tiny delay from when you push the button to what happens on the screen. This is due to being emulated and not real hardware. It certainly doesn't play as well as the original hardware. It's good for casual gaming but not serious playing.
damn i was hoping for a 1 TB harddrive and 4k HDR capabilities... im Really disappointed! Everyone know the true way to play 8 bit games is in 4k at 60 fps!
Firste Laste No it's a USB cable that plugs directly into a USB socket. The edition we get doesn't ship with any adapters. Even if it did, all that's doing is converting the wall AC into 5V DC. It says it on the box.
Wonder why the $60 price mentioned with this unit* is lied about when it sells for $200 UP?!??! I was going to buy one, but why would I want to do that when I can buy LOTS of games for 200 bucks???? LOL! Poppy in Georgia
Josh B I don't think they do. People are trying to sell them for that much and more but there are loads for sale at $100 so no one is stupid enough to pay 250+.
db six No they didn't. There were auctions that went crazy but no money ever changed hands. The old school "through hole" capacitors are a thing of the past in some modern electronics like this. The capacitors are miniaturised as surface mount now.

Too the flap doesn't open it would have been neat if it did just for fun.
I believe the Hynix chip is RAM, the TSOP spansion chip is a flash ROM, not sure on the R16 BGA mounted chip, perhaps a CPU / MCU (just based on its proximity to the RAM, and clearly has connectivity to the flash ROM). If it isn't encrypted or the encryption can be defeated... we could have a lot of fun with this little box :)
R16 is quad core Cortex-A7 CPU. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allwinner_Technology

Great info there +samsnacbar Thanks for sharing
Thanks +GadgetUK164 good info.
All that wonderful space to put batteries and a screen in there to make it portable.
Great Video was looking for a teardown video, and was very happy when you came up on the search :D
would the e3 flasher clip onto that spansion memory chip? 😀
That thing has a quad core ARM, and a Mali 400. That thing can run NES, SNES, GENESIS and PS games.
it's basically a RPI 3 with emulation station on it (yes different chips, similar specs!), you'd be better off investing your mony in an RPI 3 and a nes-classic usb controller and then installing retropie on it. you'll have a better nes-classic for the same price!
Thats true. The RPI3 is better and cheaper but the NES case is very cool. People should sell mini consoles look alike RPI cases on ebay.
Abraham Soto just 3d print those cases. There are tons if designs on thingiverse.com
besides its illegal unless you own every single game you play and you made the romcopy yourself
Who the fuck cares?
Thanks for this! I was very curious to see what the NES Mini had inside of it. Also when you put the controller up against the console it really gave a good idea as to its size.
Edit: Chip Models added to description
Global Garage which is the sound processor?
would there be a way to mod it to add more games???
hopefully people can find ways to modd these things like some way to put on more games or the entire Nintendo nes Library that would be awesome
Nathan Lopez you can mod them dude
The timing on the power LED turning on, had me thinking it was gonna do the flashing reset stuff. Triggered.
Those few power on seconds were an "oh shit, they've emulated the unreliability of the original"
There HAS to be some way to get more games/applications on it or hack it.
What happens if you use the USB power cable and connect it to a PC? Can it be interacted with in any way or does it only have the pins required for power?
Jesse D it looks like a 4gb flash module. 30 games is not much space used. Though the Linux OS may be on it too, so who knows how much space that's used by it.
gigabit
jlebrech No.
they have hack it is useing allwinner bord it cost about 10$ to make
Your Nevergunnaknow Yes you can
:) awesome video mate. The console looks cool. Only issue I have is how short the cable is from the Controller to the system.
Thanks Dave. Yep the controller cable is way too short. I think a Wii U controller extension cable will work fine so ill pick up a few and test them out.
Same here,liked the tear down.
Wish nintendo would have added bluetooth so you could connect a wii remote to it.
I think cable is the right way to go. You want a retro feel, and also bluetooth adds lag.
I've already ordered a 1.8m extension cable. Bluetooth would add lag
My only issue is that you can't even buy the thing.
Seen too many unboxings of this thing. Glad you pulled it apart!
"Very careful not to cut the box!" Brilliant. For a few seconds my brain refused to believe you didn't say 'fingers' :D You must have been crazy excited for the NES :)
Nice little tear down vid daz, didn't realise they were that small !..

first teardown i could find! thx! any controller details? is it similar to the original?
Yes, we need a teardown of that one too. Is it just the plug that is different from an original NES one, or is there some kind of more advanced controller involved?
Here's the controller teardown. Fresh out of the upload oven - ruclips.net/video/RFuJZAvD0c8/видео.html
An interesting little unit this is Global. I really would like to purchase this here in the U.S. for sure. Nice tear down video and thank you for sharing this with us.
Anthony...
Do you think this will modded so you can side load roms onto it?
Allwinner R16 chip, so it's running on an ARM Cortex A7. Might be hard to hack as flash storage appears to be soldered onto the board, sure someone will figure out something though, they always do :).
I think it will only be a matter of days before someone has dumped the contents of that flash chip... probably already online somewhere.
Hahaha, yup, be interesting to see if this can be turned into a 500 in 1 or something :D.
And that's it!
sh0tgunbl45t they only retail for $60 in the stores. if people paid even hundreds just to get theirs early, they are fools.
Osmosis i'd say it's like a rpi.
Controller teardown?
the contoller is not exactly like thr original, it is slightly differently sized, also the connector is wii line in general, it works for a replacement for a classic controller, with less buttons of course, but it is still the same kind of circuit as the classic and gc like version of the classic for the wii but still does work on wii u
can i connect a mini nes to a non-digital tv using a hdmi converter?
You could, but I wouldn't recommend it as the signal would still be widescreen and you'd still have that HDMI input lag.

They wanted to keep the price as similar to the US price, as the shipping price is included in the price of it, so they did a few sacrifices. Most people here in the EU have a good few wall adapters anyways.
International version has to deal with several different wall outlets, so companies usually do not include AC adapters
So ours here in Australia didn't come with the AC to DC adapter as you don't need it and it does seem like cost cutting. Any USB port works fine. Even the one on the side of my Samsung TV worked. We paid $99 AUD which is about $74 USD

Zeaiclies perhaps they don't do this due to legal issue
I was joking
is it possible to hook up the NES Classic to a laptop with a HDMI port?
Dennis Junior You would need an input HDMI port. Usually the one on your laptop is for outputting.
Global Garage oh... well when i get me one... which will be probably either christmas or tax time... ill be able to see...
Dennis Junior why wouldn't you just run an emulator?
maidenfitter because... its illegal... and i dont feel like going to jail? ._.
it's got an ARM processor and flash. it's an emulator running on Linux.
do the games still have their original glitches to exploit ?
Yes.
Don't turn it on, take it apart !
Because bob's our uncle
Jill Stanley you didn't think anyone bought their Nintendo just to play it, did you😉
Just in case no one got the reference. It's from EEVblog. Nice reference Jill.
i am trying get hold of one there hard to fine
Andrew Dupuis They're now discontinued from Nintendo. The good news is they're making a SNES Mini due out before Christmas
Video starts at 10:45
I see you took your time making sure you didn't die to that first goomba...
Allwinner R16 is a ARM chip like in android phones
We got different packaging in Canada and a "ac" adaptor
I do imagine that in a few months, we should start seeing YT videos showing up on how someone modified these to import more NES games. (Even if some will be tossing out the internal guts and replacing it with a Raspberry Pi to keep that classic case.)
i have this. preordered it when I heard it.
I think they emulated the same amount of lag as the original NES.
haha yep. There's definitely some lag. That's my excuse for the gameplay you saw anyway :P
hdmi always have lag if you can set the screen to 240p and the nes mini to 240p it would have way less lag than say 720p
10:50 if you are here to see inside it.
You should have acctual does some research when you started showing the insides of the mini nes so you could have told us a little more about it :D
so glad you've done this
nice have been dying to see inside the hood
Guess you beat Ben Heck to it!
starts @ 10:55
Very informative, nice to see the guts of this thing. doesnt look like a whole lot going on but im not much of an expert
Allwinner R16: ARM Chip
Hynix: Memory
Spansion: flash memory
axp 223 : power management chip
It's totally hackable :)
indeed and the R16 is am ARM A7 4 core combined with a Mali 400 GP2
it has been done.
I'm gonna get one just so I can pull the guts out and house my Raspberry Pi 2 which, as we all know, is a far better value to the NES Classic Edition. Nice Vid
Cool video i always enjoy watching NES stuff thanks for sharing.Ive subbed to your
channel going to check out more of your videos in the future :)
Is it an emulator?
9 secs to boot up embedded Linux? (buildroot)
Saverio Russo do you know how to hide some pi booting splash stuff? like text on boot
I honestly just don't get it... why even consider modding this? It's a freaking ARM processor running an emulator. EDIT: Typos
Glad you did this teardown i wouldve preferred nintendo use hardware than a SoC emulated. To me this is no different at all to clone consoles.
great video as always
Thanks Owen. Have you picked one up?
Global Garage hopefully being delivered today
I would have loved it to be fpga but in reality the emulation appears to be as good as perfect.
This is a mass production model so I highly doubt it uses an FPGA. It would be cheaper to have a custom architecture IC production similar to the original however even cheaper is emulation and that's probably what it is.
Should've done what PlayStation always do just have this one a smaller version of the original NES with smaller cartridges and all
the box is different from the USA version
This one was the Australian version
No problem. Thanks
meh, waiting for the fpga console from kevtris if he ever gets it to manufacturing
Is this the console.... really..??
***** i was laughing at the person in the video when he asked...
IS THIS THE CONSOLE..??
i was making a comment on his question because it was a dumb thing to say on the video.. Of course its the console, what else would it be..?? its an obvious .. But you didnt get it...!!
who else used the qr to download several game manuals? Metroid one is amazing. those draws where funny as fuck
i wish this console was available 20 years ago. oh wait it was
allwiner r16 run android
gamer ryu br so should I just 3D print a shell for an android?
Who the hell disliked this video?!! What is wrong with the world of the Internet?!
There's always haters Dave. I wish they would comment instead of hiding behind their keyboards
Only reason I could possibly think of disliking it is the people who dislike seeing gaming consoles (especially recent limited edition ones afawk) being taken apart.
PandaXclone2 agreed
***** Semantics. It's a Nintendo product that they're putting out at a limited distribution.
Dave's Game Room missed the invisible 1up in the first level. lol
oh man! Is this the first time you play Super Mario Bros? :P
For a long time yes! This gives me a good excuse to practice. :)
Thing is there IS a glitch with this thing and needs to be fixed asap. I
bought my classic NES and there is an important thing that mario needs
to do and this controller or interuptions of the keypad DONT work
everytime.... try being the big mario and trying to glide under a
boulder of bricks in a small space in say 1-1 tunnel.. try running... he
is ULTIMATLEY slow and cannot get under like in the ORINGINAL NES...
the right and down key dont feel the same as the older one and its
frustrating... everything else aka screen is fine, the lace and pure is
Great!. keys.... NOT SO MUCH....
Yes I know what you mean. I think it's input lag mainly, so the controllers have a tiny delay from when you push the button to what happens on the screen. damn i was hoping for a 1 TB harddrive and 4k HDR capabilities... im Really disappointed! Everyone know the true way to play 8 bit games is in 4k at 60 fps!
Huh. It's all off-the-shelf parts. No custom ASICs or FPGAs. Probably really cheap to produce.
Actually it IS an ac adaptor because you plug it into an ac outlet... :-)
So they do know what they are talking about...
Firste Laste No it's a USB cable that plugs directly into a USB socket. The edition we get doesn't ship with any adapters. Even if it did, all that's doing is converting the wall AC into 5V DC. It says it on the box.
Global Garage
Nevermind .... you didnt get it
It is a thermal pad, not a protective pad lol
Yep sure it!
Wonder why the $60 price mentioned with this unit* is lied about when it sells for $200 UP?!??! I was going to buy one, but why would I want to do that when I can buy LOTS of games for 200 bucks???? LOL!
Poppy in Georgia
They're out of stock.
Poppy Williams The retail price is $60. No one has lied, it's scalpers charging loads of money for them.
Give me a Raspberry Pi any day. Sure you don't have the fancy case, but you have a fantastically more versatile machine than this.
I could mod this and add better hardware. Theres tons of potential here...
I'd imagine nintendo will pull this stunt again with an snes version also. It's likely too cause these things are selling like hotcakes right now.
and?
This looks like a Raspberry Pi with less Ports. xD
Sadly it is not FPGA...that would have been nice though.
Yep I thought it would be, but I was wrong on that point. Let's see what info surfaces around these chips.
Yes, finally.
there's no need to mod it, just throw away the insides and put in a raspberry pi 3
+Retro Ram it is possible.
I actually came here to see about doing this.
I wish it was USB c not b, USB b always gets fucked up
They're using something standard and probably cheaper. What exactly is USB C's advantage here?
not much really I just like the fact that its reversible and does not get messed up as quick as USB b its really just a personal preference
tyler henry How does USB B get "messed up"? (O_o)
How freaking CHEAPO you got to be to not even include an adaptor!
#nintendofalida
Ummm you have a knock off one...
random guy animations Yeah nah
Global Garage what?
random guy animations I know it’s not a knock off. What the story?
People spend $250+ on this thing? Lmao
Josh B I don't think they do. People are trying to sell them for that much and more but there are loads for sale at $100 so no one is stupid enough to pay 250+.
Well some idiots on ebay bought them at 5000$.
db six
No they didn't. There were auctions that went crazy but no money ever changed hands. At that time you could buy them from sellers on Ebay and Amazon for $150, there were hundreds of listings at that price. There are a lot of very stupid people out there but no one is stupid enough to pay $5000 when there is a listing right next to it to buy it now for $150.
It is a lovely story but in reality it just didn't happen.
There is at least one listing on ebay where I saw 6 have been sold at 5000$. That wasn't an auction.
db six
Sure you did. Do you have the link?
Youchoob.
No point on buying on its China made
nowadays everything is made in China.
Do you own a phone?
Iphones are made in China too.
Finally someone mentions
OVER 100 BUSCKS FOR THIS OLD GAME?? KINDA STUPID TO WASTE ALL THAT MONEY! INSTEAD BUY THE ORIGINAL GAMES AND ORIGINAL CONSOLE
What a waste of money. And you can't even put more games on it. Just get a retropie instead
It's convenience in a box. It's not perfect, but for under $100 it's very good.
So is this just a bunch of chips? Where the capacitors? They seriously couldn't make more?
The old school "through hole" capacitors are a thing of the past in some modern electronics like this. The capacitors are miniaturised as surface mount now.
So Australians got the Nes classic instead of the famicom classic?
Yes. Only Japan got anything named Famicom as far as I know.
