Take game emulation of your favorite 80s and 90s classics to the next level with this dirt-cheap yet highly functional DIY build. Turn an old Nintendo NES cartridge into a modern gaming system. Relieve your childhood with your favorite titles upscaled to 4K!
FINALLY A gaming mod/build with no soldering!
Might not look very pretty on the inside, but it's super easy-that's a big benefit. :D
What's so bad about soldering?
Alex Anders It requires special tools and expertise, and can go wrong and completely ruin the parts if you don't do it right. I definitely would prefer a no-solder build, as it's more foolproof.
Though cutting out that one piece is also something you can mess up, as most people don't have the best tool for the job.
But that's only true for SMT components. Regular components can be soldered on using a soldering iron-nothing special about that, and no expertise required. Basic soldering takes minutes to learn, and no-you don't need a good iron at all for basic soldering.
Got my build working. You omitted a critical bit of info that the average Joe might get stuck on... USB must be formatted to FAT32 or NTFS, then create a folder called "retropie" on your USB stick BEFORE plugging it onto the Raspberry Pi for the first time. Only THEN will the Pi create the roms/folders directory.
how is the latency? all the upscaling seems like it would be noticeable.
Since I don't have it in the box yet I only played some games to test it. Didn't notice ANY issues at all.
Rob K Music want make another?
How does one format it to that?
drugz4hugs watch the video. It will get 99% there. They just missed a few details. Maybe they had an earlier build of RetroPie.
I highly recommend getting reproduction cartridges for this rather than destroying the authentic games.
Not a bad idea, but wouldn't those games generally cost in the 30 dollar range or more? Especially when you are only using the shell for this.
I'm sure you can find the cartridge shells online somewhere if this is a concern for you. That, or check ebay/CL for games that do not work, that way you don't need to be concerned with destroying the game.
If you didn't mind waiting for shipping, you can get some for $6 from China. Or if you were making some for friends, I saw a lot of 5 for $25 in the US.
A lot of repro games cannibalize common games for their carts anyhow.
Honestly if you have a retro game shop in your area they typically have non-working games that they'll sell you for a dollar or just give you if you ask. That's only if you REALLY care about destroying a working game. I have several old mario/duck hunt games bought in bulk lots/garage sales over the years so I'll likely cannibalize them for parts. Now I might just be a jerk and buy a reprinted sticker for a really valuable game to put on the cart just to mess with someone. "OMG YOU RUINED A LITTLE SAMSON TO MAKE THIS???!!!!"
"totally not full of ROMs" lmao @2:48
Here
Austin John Plays omg!
Nooo! Don't cannibalize old NES carts. These things are antiques, don't destroy them, no matter how "crappy" you think the game is. There are plenty of fake NES cart shells out there for even cheaper.
+frylock456 There is no shortage of NES Golf carts.
There will be now.
Super Mario Bros and Duck Hunt
Yup... that's what I'm using
Still, don't cannibalize old NES carts even if there is no shortage.
Ok so I’ve been always telling myself “yeah I’m gonna make that” but I never have but that stopped two months ago when I finished making this I’m very proud of myself for making this.
Since when is nes golf a crappy game??
May 1, 1984
Rasputin Varez May 1st is Nazi Germany's national day, fyi.
Slippy Toad I did nazi that one coming
But considering Hitler stole his symbol from the celtic Brits, of course he would have stolen the may day celebrations as well.
The day Mario golf came out lol.
Slippy Toad it's been created independently by many cultures, Hitler took it for it's connection to the Germanic god Thor, it's meaning in this context was "hammer of the gods".
This is one of the coolest things ever! And you make it easy to follow with this tutorial. You should make more DIYs for us to try!
With all that adapters you need, it seems like it is an Apple product.
+This Guy lol
After that theyll remove the screen since it takes up soooo much space. By 2025 i heard they're just gonna sell us an apple logo carved out in aluminum.
Take my Like!
No screen? Imagine how long that battery would last!
Philipp Winter Not one single second. They will remove the battery too. You have to buy now an power bank to use the device :D
THIS IS FANTASTIC!
Great video. I also appreciate that it's only 7 minutes and not 45 minutes like some videos out there. Subscribed to see more! :)
I wanna say thank you because this video gave me the perfect idea for a present, same concept just using a newer raspberry pi and a toy instead of a nes cartridge
Is there any Wi-fi on it? Say if I want to add more games or there's a firmware update to the retropi Etc.
No, the raspberry pi zero doesn't have WiFi built in. The raspberry pi 3 does.
sadly, there is not.
Well, you can get a wifi adapter and plug it in to a usb port, i did that with my raspberry pi 2
Dude! I love your videos!
Saxton Hay Bale
Ha, thanks bud :)
You sir might have inspired me to make my own pi console.
It should be much cheaper than the nes mini as well....or at least the same price if you include the controller.
The Boone but pi is emulates GBA Gbc Gb snes nes so on and so on
And you have that extra feeling of pride knowing you put it together.
+The Boone I did mine about 6 months ago it was a different model I think I bought a kit that was like 60 bucks cuz it was everything I needed... Anyways I still feel proud every time I show it off most of my friends didn't know this was possible
Hope you have close to $90 for parts.
Great build, everything should be in house the day before thankgiving. What a great project for people to enjoy the next day. Thanks.
I'm keeping my NES Classic Mini in the box and building two of these ,thanks for the great video.
Or just use a Raspberry Pi 3, the HDMI and USB ports are already on the board. It will be cheaper, more compact and lets face it less work. I honestly don't get this setup.
will it work.. I am about to order one? It seems like a way easier fit to just use the Pi 3..
*****
Why wouldn't it work? It has all the components needed. The Pi 3 is the way to go.
mackjeez Ok cool.. Yea it looked like it would have fewer things needed and I loved the full size HDMI connection one less adapter.
What about size? is it too tall?
BloodTide I was thinking about using a NEO GEO Cartridge plenty big enough :)
"For less than $30" Except it actually costs more than double that at $74.24 for all the parts minus the cartridge.
Unless you're just talking about the Pi Zero board then sure, but you need all the other parts too.
small price to pay for oh, I dunno, EVERY SINGLE RETRO GAME EVER.
To be fair, I could just plug my laptop into my tv with an HDMI cable and play games like that. It's not as small or cool looking, but it's already paid for.
Haeinscute To be fair, in counterpoint:
dat input lag, doh.
You're overpaying. The Pi Zero is $5, the USB hub can be had for less than that if you don't insist on an Amazon branded one, the various cables are under $10, and the last controller I bought was $5. You can get all the parts and still have $5 left for shipping before the cost gets up to $30 easy.
Of course I've yet to find a place other than Micro Center (where you can buy it the old fashioned way instead of using these newfangeled interwebs) that charges less than $10 shipping for a Pi Zero...
This is exactly what i was looking for when someone said Nintendo released the retro console. Thanks for the awesome video!!
This is so cool!! I want to make one. Thank you for making this video.
I thought the rasberry pi zero could only output 1080p
Probably upscaling.
Raspberry can output virtually any resolution you like. Just tweak config.txt.
Check the smooth screen capture of the windows machine vs the apple
+yelsew82 It wasn't the fault of the computer. I had a problem with my external recorder and was crunched on time.
yelsew82 my windows machine can easily capture 4K 60FPS game footage, while most games dont even run on similar priced apple products.
Its not the operating systems fault, really.
Great video. Very simple + clear. Can't wait to start building my own. All the parts are ordered, just waiting on them to arrive.
Definitely going to try this next week! Seems like a fun gift, thanks for the idea!
Super cool. what a great toilet watch
slurmz123 wait u tried this?
they..
This was absolutely fantastic. Thank you sir for your efforts in making this video happen!
+xguju Thanks for watching!
Dude this is retroactively,Conclusively and selectively awesomely.
This is dope as hell, Snazzy. And here I thought nothing was going to outclass that epic moostache of yours. Haha. Stay Snazzy, dood.
I'm going to build one
Good luck! I'll have a more detailed guide up on the blog for the nitty gritty details, but it really is a super easy project!
Waaaaahhhh? Did you just encourage your audience to dislike if they didn't like this video??? You my friend get an instant sub and a like
+juan valdez Cheers! And welcome! :)
Awesome idea thank you for the tutorial!
I just ordered all my parts. I can't wait to build one! Just for the cool factor, how small it is.
it cost me around $70 though with all the parts included, which is still not bad considering the nes classic (that is impossible to get) has 30 NES games and this can play a ton more systems and can store many many more games.
Thanks again!
This is awesome, and I really don't understand why you don't have more subscribers. Subbed.
4k resolution in the same sentence as retro console.
chexo3 I know. I almost choked on my drink when I heard such a absurd statment.
+Rudofaux It's not absurd...? It does pixel to pixel scaling. Ever plugged an original NES into a 65" TV? It looks awful. This, however, looks great.
Snazzy Labs So, what you are saying is that you plugged in a retro like "console" into a flat panel monitor & not a CRT?
Do you even know anything about retro gaming?
Do you still ride to work on a horse?
Snazzy Labs Thank you for answering my question with a question. Now that I see you can't take criticism well, I wash my hands of you.
Good luck buddy.
I'm pretty sure this stuff is more expensive than $30
But you can get any game that you want for free
hompalai
It's easy to get roms for free.
Sean Prior Yes, I know. You can't get roms for the NES Classic though. That was my point.
The hell you can't...
firebirdude2 You're stuck with the 30 pre-loaded games
Supercool, I will be sure to make this, love to get this started.
I went to the parts list and ordered everything online. I built the cartridge pi console. The price was more around fifty bucks, but I think that it was totally worth it. Wires were a tight squeeze, but I figured it out eventually. One problem that you might run into if you're gonna build this is finding the "Expand file system" in the raspi config menu. If the Expand file system isn't on the top of the config list, it's in the advanced settings folder. Anyway, the build took me two days to complete, but was worth the work. I recommend this project to any retro gaming fans.
Wait, what's all the rest of the space on the cartridge for.
You mean when I pulled the original game out? More complex games used more surface area due to larger PCBs.
Not true. Prototype games used the full case, but retail games didn't. Probably because the Japanese cartridges were much smaller, like half as tall, and the PCB was very similar despite the different pin layout. The reason the NES carts were so big was for the front loading system they designed for the US market, the Famicom is a top loader.

at 5:00 I connect my usb drive to the usb hub. but no folders are created on the usb drive. ?
RebelRedShirt _ USB needs to be formatted FAT32 you need to create a folder called RetroPie on it.
Great, ill give it a try
rwafford1_ thanks a lot! that did the trick! i needed to create the retropie folder. the video makes it seem as if the pi zero does it for you
RebelRedShirt _ Yeah. It's an oversight, but the links in the description are more detailed.
thanks c:
This is one of the best tutorials I have seen for this!
I love that you showed how to do this on both windows and mac
could i just buy this from u? This looks dope!
why not drill a little hole for the LED rather than ripping it out
easier :P
Because the hole would be on the bottom of the case they way this tutorial lays it out. But yeah, you could flip it around. My buddy built one and did just that.
This is a really neat build. I realized while watching the video that I already have, quite literally, all of the necessary components sitting on the desk right in front of me. I even have that crappy Golf game.
+Mike Lastname Impressive! ;)
Holy crap....looks like an amazing winter project and a cute idea with the NES cartridge as the case. Happy to see absolutely no hot gluing or worse soldering making this an absolutely idiot proof project for someone like myself with no electronics experience whatsoever. Totally rad!! May have to get to work on acquiring all the pieces parts necessary to build one of these. I've always wanted to own something like this.
They just hacked the Famicom mini, gonna see if NES classic follows, but if not, this is a nice solution.
It has 512mb of storage memory
For the NES? That's plenty. You can probably prune the duplicates (PAL versions of games that came out in the US, for example) and get the whole remaining library under that.
+d4t6ix That's the RAM. The storage is the SD card, so 8GB minimum (a chunk of which is taken up by the OS). But even if it were 512MB NES ROMs are measured in kilobytes. The biggest ones are around 225KB, but most are around 20KB. You can fit thousands of them into 512MB.
Kris Sisk 256mb of ram and 512mb of storage; You can check the specs online
Gee, Golf is so crappy that it's even included in the Mini NES classic edition.
Done, Done and Done! Thank you very much for this! Kids will love it!
I just finished making mine and it's so awesome!
Golf is NOT a crappy game!
Arch Dawg yes it is
@@marlow62 no
it's programmed by iwata
AND is the 10th best selling NES game
How about that! Thank you smart hipster!
+Larry Zapata Cheers!
Just got done my custome black Mike Tyson's Punchout last night. Thanks for the video. was super easy.
This is awesome!
I made one myself for approx. 45,-€ (the micro-USB-cable was the hardest thing to find, 'cause they were all too long)
Thanks for giving me the idea to build this thing and I wish you happy holidays and a happy new year from Germany :)
How do you turn this on and off?
you have to plug in the micro usb to boot it up and remove the micro usb to turn it off
When you are on the main screen, you can press start, go to quit, then "turn off console."
Also, when you are in a game, start+select will save and quit to main menu. So you can go from there and turn off properly.
Dinner, a movie and a massage to turn it on, tell it you always liked Sega better to turn it off.
but what about to turn it back on? i've seen $20 power switches for the raspberry pi but they say something about needing to use a script or something. i'm thinking of building a few of these for friends but need a proper power on/off switch for them
Just unplug it and plug it back in.
My power supply is 1.3 amps, which is slightly higher than I'd prefer. So I unplug it when it's not in use anyways.
I'm wondering how you got the "less than $30 number". It's $76 for all the parts if you buy everything on Amazon. Well over double what you claim. It's more expensive than the actual NES Classic Edition by about $16. Not sure how it "kills it" in any way.
It kills it because not only can you have way more roms, but you could also do other consoles such as SNES.
I found this way cheaper
I wouldn't look at his list because you can find cheaper deals but the Amazon basic USB hub is cheap tho
To the people saying "it does more", well yeah... for a LOT more money. A PC does more than a console too. For a LOT more money. That doesn't make it a console killer.
Luther Playz The deals he linked are pretty cheap amazon deals. It's just a lot of items, and even a few dollars per item adds up quick.
MercilessHobo They do but I just like something small but portable
how is 16 dollars a LOT more money?
I'm actually in the process of making this exact system for myself! Still waiting on some parts from Amazon though so doing some homework and prep work in the meantime.
For mine I'm putting it in a Super Mario Bros 1/Duck Hunt because it's an iconic and very common game.
Watching you in 2018. My first reaction is "Oh my god he had a beard!"
Use an Apple to set up a Linux device? Now I don't know if you are serious or trolling.
You need to prepare the SD card. You can use Windows too. But yeah fuck Apple. I have no idea why people love their shit so much, apple computers are so fucking over priced and over hyped. Yeah 2500 EUR for an iMac LOL.
They both are based off unix. Asking someone to setup a linux device with windows is much more of a troll, but even then it's not.
sickley2 Dude, the majority of computer users are Windows users. Telling someone to install Linux just for a SD card is trolling.
Who said anything about telling someone to install linux just for an sd card? That's not part of this process.
what are you? not to be mean but are you Cuban or Mexican or what country is your ethnicity
+T1GR3S13 White. Lol
Snazzy Labs so you just learn Spanish
That's fricking awesome
T1GR3S13 Yeah I lived in Bolivia for 2 years so I learned Spanish. :)
Snazzy Labs that's awesome. Same with your music taste. I actually know maná personally because my dad used to hire them all the time to play. Btw are you willing to sell this emulator
bro. thank you so much for this video. I will definitely try to make one of these for sure. didn't happen to be lucky enough to get the mini retro nes. so this will be a great compromise.
+Troy Cruikshank Great! Tweet me pics once you've finished! 🙂
Good stuff! I built one into an Atari 2600 cart a few months back. Works like a charm!
what about 4 playes NES games?
I'm not seeing anyone pulling it off.
+corrado There is multiplayer. Sure.
Snazzy Labs so this set up can take 4 controllers?
corrado NES only allows up to 2 players
corrado NES only allows up to 2 players
SuperSmashMaster43 incorrect, there are 4 player titles and I've owned a few of them... We used the 4 score to connect 4 controllers to play these games, no one has been able to emulate/mod a retropi for 4 NES players.
The total not including the USB drive, the game cartridge or the sd card is $66.38!! It's cheaper to buy the NES Classic!
+pixelationloss Where do you live...? Prices aren't that high. Also, NES Classic is objectively worse. This is smaller and more powerful-with the ability to play any game from any console in the 80s.
Snazzy Labs I live in Seattle WA, and I used all the amazon links you provided (and I have Prime)
pixelationloss I live in ridgefield WA and it cost me less then $30 without prime,
Rainbow Dash damn, I guess we can't trust amazon to have fair pricing.
Rainbow Dash wow that was totally uncalled for. I used all the links provided and the total I got was 66.38
This worked very well. The only snag I hit was with the retropie creating the folders on the flash drive. Because I was using a newer version I had to first make a folder titled "retropie". After that everything worked like the video said it would. Thanks for making this vid.
youre like a genius genie with an awesome stache. this is great
Do not destroy original carts please. There are reproduction shells you can get if you are so inclined to use a cart shell.
its a good game for me..... yes it is :P
"shit game" =/= no value. ET for Atari was bad and is still worth some money.
lol mabye in your contry is shet but in mine is one of a kind :P
+Tommy W. here in America to a collector if it has a working battery in it it's worth $32 more than that Raspberry Pi cost
I fully agree with this. Plus it gives you a chance to use a shell that's more custom to however you want. They make all kinds of colored cartridges. I already have an nes cart that the insides are broken, so it doesn't hold the board in place properly, so I'll probably just use it.
Please stop destroying authentic games, even if they were crap.
Get repro carts.
Or better yet, you can find empty cart shells.
+samljer LOL.
He removed the game, he can just get a new empty cart for it.
samljer no one wants golf
As if he didn't throw it in the garbage can after the video. ^_^
This is cool. I will definitely be building one!
i really like the way u explain all steps to let us follow Well. thanks , not all channels know how to describe step by step, even if they think they are... guud job I subscribe.
Here's a better NES Classic killer.
1. Install Nestopia onto your computer.
2. Plug in your USB controller.
3. Play games.
I have my psp hacked to play most of the retro games.
Step 0.5 Don't be a fucking hipster
OldsXCool Yeah, if I want to sit at a desk to play games.
Kairi091 Thought you were pretty clever there, didn't you? Let's think about this for a moment.
Sitting at a desk in a comfortable office chair is actually way more comfortable and better for your back than sitting on a couch. However you can hook any modern computer to any TV these days so you don't have to sit at a desk if you don't want to. Also a great majority of those with computers have laptops which can be used anywhere, even on the couch, and can be hooked up via HDMI to TVs as well. Your whole "playing games at a desk" argument is about as out of touch as Nintendo themselves. Additionally I hope you don't intend on sitting on the couch while playing the NES Classic whose controller only has a 3 foot cord. You will most likely be sitting on the floor and looking up about 3 feet away from a 50 inch or bigger screen. Have fun with that.
At the moment i've got my pc hooked up to a projector and use it to game from the couch. Haven't used a desk and monitor setup in years now. You know you're playing with power when you're playing NES games on a 92" inch screen !
Gross, who uses a mac? Ew. Stopped the video, disliked, flagged, now closing the tab.
Torgo Don't forget to also burn your whole computer. Better safe then sorry!
+Torgo To answer your question: tens of millions of people.
So you false flagged his video because you don't like macs? I don't care for macs but false flagging is way worse then mac computers is to me. Eat shit.
I didn't really flag the video, hehe, I'm not that retarded. I can't even remember posting this, I can't believe 10 people clicked like on my ridiculous comment. XD
Torgo People liked your joke.
I'm definantly going to make myself one of these. Great video!
Awesome video!
Thanks for making an alternative for the NES classic edition right before I got my hands on one, just saved me a couple bucks :)
Good luck! :D
Snazzy Labs Used a Pi 2 instead of a Zero, and even though I went through some trouble when install RetroPie, it was worth it. Just got to get my hands on a USB SNES controller (luckily The Pi Hut literally just made their version available for 5£, which is really cheap compared to retrolinks offerings) and a couple ROMs, and I'll be ready to rock my homemade NES classic edition :)
Thanks a lot Quinn! Wish you luck with your exams!
Pretty unique, good work 🤓👍🏼
YOU DEFILED THE TURD THAT IS NES GOLF TO BUILD AN AMAZING SYSYEM? lol. Awesome build, brother. Subscribed.
THANKS FOR THE VIDEO GUY!!!! Finally got mine going turns out I didn't have sound because my TV I was using was too old so I bought a new SmartTV now and the sounds works great I started my project at Thanksgiving now I have 800 NES games on my Zelda Gold Cartridge and 600 SNES games and 900 Sega games and I even added Wi-Fi to mine
Thanks a lot for this tutorial! This is awesome!
This is awesome! Please make more
I made one of these and it is a totally cool project. If you are starting from scratch, the real world price is around $70 if you use Amazon prime for (least expensive) everything shipped in a few days. The $5 Pi Zero is misleading because the only shipping option from adrafruit is $12.50 per unit (1 per order max). Having a mini sd card and power supply on hand will save you $10. A good ibuffallo controller will cost another $15. If you don't mind waiting for a month you can save $30 and get all the cords from gearbest or dx. the best way to go is just get a Pi 3 kit with a case and 2.5 amp power supply for $50 and have bluetooth and wifi also. Thanks for the vid! It opened up a whole new world for me! I just discovered the raspberry pi phenomenon after watching this.
Awesome build!
Anything that involves retro games are always great videos
Thanks for watching!
This works. And it's amazing. Just make sure you put a "retropie" folder on the USB stick before you plug it in the pie to make the hierarchy.
This is awesome, super detailed and clear...look out microcenter, here I come!
Great Video. One side note though. If you cannot get the retropie file to create automatically on the USB simply add an empty folder to the thumb named "retropie" no quotes. Then throw it back in your pi and wait for the light to stop flashing. Remove from your Pi and back to the PC and your sub folders will be build and ready for Rom
This is the coolest god damn thing I have ever seen. Subbed. Now and forever.
I'm gonna make my dad one for Christmas! He'll love it!!
That's a great idea!
THIS WAS INCREDIBLE THANK YOU
You got a like from me! Awesome tutorial man!
Looks really great!
Nice build!
very impressive man, great job
Awesome work of tech, man.
I love it. I will be making this by the end of December. To anyone crying about us "breaking games" to make this wonderful device... will that just makes your copy more valuable.
freaking awesome!!!! this is awesome to make for gifts thanks for this video
Great video I'll be trying this soon
Coolest thing I've seen in ages - amazing!
Cheers, Mark!
Your site still doesn't have the instructions update though. Hope the exams are going well!
This is cool as hell. Great idea.
Much smaller than the emulator I made 10 years ago, great idea, thanks
hope to see something like this in a few years with all ps4 and xb1 games
This is even better than the "new" Nintendo one, I'm going to build one too 😃
I think so too! Don't tell Nintendo, tho. ;D
THIS IS AWESOME! Def doing this. THANK YOU!
Thanks for watching!
