- In 1971, a group of high school students invented a numerical code for stoners that has grown into the ultimate high holiday. Fifty years later, federal legalization for marijuana is no longer a pipe dream-and cannabis is poised to become America’s next $100 billion industry.
Today, on the 50th anniversary of 420, the U.S. government still considers cannabis one of the most dangerous drugs and technically speaking, every CEO, investor and employee of a state-legal marijuana company is breaking federal law.
But the irony is that what started as a joke among teenagers has blossomed into the ultimate high holiday-the Black Friday for cannabis. Last year, sales during the week of 420 surpassed a record of $126 million across six states tracked by data firm BDSA. And the U.S. cannabis industry, which reported record annual sales of $17.5 billion last year, is poised to reach $41 billion in annual sales by 2025, according to Cowen.
There is still plenty of work to be done to legalize cannabis at the federal level, but if Congress thinks it is still up for debate in America, they must be high. The country has long passed the tipping point: According to the latest Gallup Poll, 68% of Americans believe marijuana should be legal and the latest Quinnipiac poll puts it even higher, at 70% of registered voters.

To non-weed smokers, listen to two important things here: #1- a group of weed smokers are all still alive and relatively healthy at age 68, and #2- they're all friendly still. Stress and health go hand in hand. So do stress and relationships. If you're stressed out all the time, you're wrecking your health, and you're usually behaving in ways that wreck your relationships.

This was a good interview with the founding members who started 4/20 in San Rafael high school so long ago in the 1970s. I give these guys props because if it wasn't for them there would be no holiday for cannabis which is on 4/20 every year and 4/20 is now one of my favorite days of the year. Cannabis is way healthier than alcohol and I'm now 2 years sober from alcohol and now I just smoke cannabis, drink coffee, drink a few sodas here and there and a few other type of beverages but that's it.

In president Nixon's first term he had a study done on marijuana. He wanted them to agree that marijuana was a bad thing. But the people he hired wrote up a report supporting marijuana be legalized because of the tax benefits it could create. Not only that but showed a medical benefit to many physical aliments. But Nixon didn't listen and had the report ditched. Then he had it classified a dangerous drug along side cociane and heroine. I know people I grew up with in the 70's that got serious jail time for position. For having less than a half ounce, they charged them for position and distribution. Distribution is the charges many US citizens got serious jail time for. But 90% of them only had 1 ounce or less on them.

Misleading story about the "popularity" of marijuana. It's never mentioned that the relative levels of THC that these "hippies" were ingesting in the 1970s pale in comparison to the modern day ultra-potent highly engineered product we have today. It's like going from beer to vodka as a a staple of consumption and you can expect a lot of the same negative long-term affects will pop up to "harmless" marijuana consumption. Also, a good bet is that 50 years from now, the number of people consuming marijuana will be drastically LOWER, not higher, than it is today. We are very likely living in the near "high point" (no pun intended) of marijuana consumption in the U.S. and the trend is likely to go in the same downward direction as alcohol and tobacco consumption over time. Today's "thrill" will become tomorrow's boredom.
yeah but whats wrong with this, better its legal than not, why take away beer from someone that enjoys it when they get home, im someone that enjoys the beer version of weed, what does it matter its popularity if it shouldnt be illegal anyway
imo anyone thinking consuming huge amounts of thc daily is a good idea isent too dissimilar from the alchoholic, but even still i dont see the long term damage being close too what alchhol does, point being that weed dosent eradicate cells from your body the way alchohol does
