  • Hello everyone! Today I decided to do a video about Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. As always for these literature videos, I tend to discuss my favourite books and this one is no exception - Frankenstein has some of the most beautiful prose that I have ever read, which really surprised me because I did not think I would enjoy it nearly as much as I did.
Please let me know if you've read it/if you intend to read it!
I hope you enjoy the video and have a lovely day :)

Ernest Frankenstein doesnt die in the book, he is the sole survivor of the frankenstein family

To be honest, I feel the author didn't care for that character that much. I mean, it's never said if Ernest died or not. But since Victor talks about solitude and that he's left with nobody else, I would asume that Ernest is dead? idk

One of the things I liked best about this book was Shelly's landscape descriptions. The descriptions of the alps were amazing, especially the mountain thunderstorms. One of the main highlights was the description of the changes in the landscape throughout Dr. Frankenstein's journey from Switzerland to Scotland.

It's just me or the whole idea that people have about Frankenstein's history differs completely of the book?! I read this book without any knowledge about it except what I got from movies and random allusions to the monster. I'm still surprised of what I found in the real novel

There are so many different levels to which the book relates to including the French Revolution where the oppressed and rebellious monster was symbolic of the poor people of Paris relative to family of Frankenstein representing the bourgeoisie. Mary Shelley undertook extensive research into the French Revolution with her partner Percy Shelley when they eloped to Paris during the summer of 1814 with Mary having undertook critical analysis of both sides of the conflict in relation to the cause of the both the Jacobins -V- the Anti-Jacobins. Her fascination with the French Revolution was a major influence in her later writing of Frankenstein thanks in no small part to the role played by her parents involvement as radical political philosophers during the time of the Revolution

I only recently read this book and was mindblown by how much I enjoyed it! And also by the fact that I thought Victor was such an interesting character to read about! The thing you say about him embodying God, Lucifer AND Adam is so true. Adam was told not to eat the apple from the tree of KNOWLEDGE and he got punished 'cause he tried to gain knowledge about something he shouldn't know about, same thing that happened to Victor. Lucifer got punished 'cause he challenged God, like Victor did. And lastly, he is God, 'cause he created life like only God could do. And then you have the beast who's both Adam and Lucifer. There's just SO MUCH to discuss and think about in this book! Also if you've seen the tv-show Penny Dreadful, there's an episode where the guy that plays the creature from Frankenstein also plays Lucifer and after reading the book I was like "Woah". Lmao, I don't know if it was intentional or just something random but it made me really excited for some reason. And also in the show the creature also asks Victor to make him a bride, and Victor actually does, but the second attempt was better looking and she turned from him as well eventually, and that, I thought, was also one of the fears of Victor in the book. Like, who was to say that the bride would just love the creature just 'cause they were similar? She could have rejected him too, and then what would the creature have done? Just such an interesting read, I'm so mad I waited this long! Gotta make some of my friends read it too so I can rant about it with them insted of leaving a comment on a 3-years-old video. xD

Mary Shelley was also influenced by Coleridge’s THE ANCIENT MARINER, which she heard read to her parents by the author himself, when she was little. Walton quotes the poem in one of his opening letters. The message of that poem is essentially, “If you mess with Nature, Nature’s going to mess with you back.” Walton learns his lesson at the end, that some lines shouldn’t be crossed, so turns his ship around.

Me: I studied hard but still failed the exam.
Mary Shelley (author of Frankenstein): I gave all my fortitude to studies, but still blundered my enterprise. I indefatigably read the books, but failed the examination ignominiously.

Mary is as interesting as the story. I like how she never really tells you how the monster comes to life. She gives a strong hint with victor seeing a tree destroyed by lighting earlier, but never says that's the secret of his animation. The captain in the story asks these details but Victor refuses to tell him.

I think that was so clever. It's like Mary couldn't even tell YOU, the reader, about it. Made it feel more real.

The environment that spawned the writing of Frankenstein was a global catastrophe known as the year without a summer in which mt tambora erupted blocking out the sun for an entire year. That summer there was a writing contest and Frankenstein was Mary Shelly's entry.

The weakness with the story is the fact that prior to turning on the power Victor knew exactly what his creation looked like and was happy to go with it and as a doctor issues of physical deformity wouldn’t have caused any psychological trauma to a doctor. And if indeed the monster was a vegetarian - how did he survive the Arctic with a distinct shortage of berry trees! 😆

I'm not sure if this answers your question but I know that Shelley rewrote Frankenstein later in life to make it a little more conservative and less revolutionary to align with her changed political viewpoints. Also, it is believed Frankenstein represents her father and she is the monster of the story. This video does not touch on the scandalous real life of Mary Shelley. I believe she regretted some of her young rebellious actions, so she changed the book, but I dont think the changed version ever became as popular.

Christy, I enjoyed your review of Frankenstein, I have taken gothic Lit. in school. You are very articulate and have a great understanding of goth lit. and in particular this novel. One thing though ma’am, you are misusing the word liturgical...the liturgy is a religious custom or rite, the liturgical observance of those rites and traditions happen on certain days that are “liturgical” in the context you were speaking of you would have been better to say that the novel had inherent religious overtones.
