I've had my PO-20 for over 3 years now and I've made some small stuff in the past (I was around 13 years old at the time) Recently though I've been wanting to really write music. At first I was gonna do it on a DAW but realized it was too complicated for me. Then I saw my PO-20 on my desk and just thought "why not make music with this?" So here I am and I'm only 3 minutes into this video but you're explaining stuff so well that it's just epic!
Free Beat I’m a total beginner so this is probably a silly question, but how do I get the audio to output thru my MBP? I plug it in but my MBP thinks it is a pair of headphones, haha. Do I need to buy a different cable or something to go in between the two devices?
@@boringnation Hmmm, I'm not a Mac guy, but you should be able to go into your sound settings and set the 3.5mm jack to "input" instead of "output." Maybe this will help? www.switchingtomac.com/tutorials/osx/use-the-line-in-audio-input-on-a-mac/
Great stuff dude. Didn't know you could modify the notes in isolation before playing. Been trying to select them live at low tempo but just couldn't be accurate with the tiny knob. Informative video and well worded. You deserve a lot more views.
Wow man, you're very good and I really love how you explain super clear little strategies to structure a song in sistematic ways 😍. I like the POs, I've this one and waiting for the Megaman version (p.s. Are you planning to do some tutorials on it? 😁). They're super powerful and for me It's the perfect step for start learning basics of music production. Congratulations and have good music!
Thanks so much!!! I'll definitely make a few tutorials for the Megaman (I think I already have one uploaded), but almost everything about it is identical to the Robot, so any of those tutorials will work fine too!
First off, thank you for this video. I LOVE the PO-20. It's my favorite PO. Playing with chords is a blast! Now, is it just me or did the PO display not show up right for this video? I know how the note values appear in the upper right from my own experience, but I could not make them out in the video.
I think it was the angle of my camera because I didn't have too much of an issue when I was filming. That's my bad, I need to pay more attention to what the camera sees rather than what I see. Thanks for watching!
Hi, I am a real 0 when it comes to making music. I've just ordered this cute device after watching some of your videos, in hopes that the limited functionality will help me not to get overwhelmed and learn some basic music making. What confuses me still is the terminology you are using. I am guessing, it's because you expect people to understand some of the basics. The question is: where do I learn these basics? Thank you
If you mean the basics of music making, that's a pretty wide topic honestly. Looking up "basic music making terminology" might help, but a lot of it is just going to be watching and reading a wide variety of content. If you mean the basics of Pocket Operators, I have a beginner video here :) ruclips.net/video/vfUABIGGP3s/видео.html Thanks for watching, and don't be afraid to go slow and have fun!
The base note is directly tied to the chord selected, where is the melody is not. The only time the melodic notes will change is when a note would be directly out of key. For example, if you're in d minor and have programmed an f, if you switch to d major the arcade will automatically switch that f to an f sharp.

I feel like this is my daily pocket operator classes 🖤 thanks for the content! :)
Haha thank you! I try to be a good teacher when possible lol, thanks for watching!
This was so helpful, thank you! :)
Happy to help!
Man, these are great, you deserve a larger following. Awesome output keep up the pocket series
Thanks so much! PO videos will always be in my rotation, no worries!
So helpful, I really have a grasp on this PO-20...Thanks!
I want to hear a PO-20 track from you soon!
@@FreeBeat Fair enough
Getting my PO-20 today. Your videos have been incredibly helpful.
You're going to have a blast! Thanks for watching, let me know if you have any questions!

:D Thanks for watching!
Was just wondering today how best to punch in melodies.. I was having a hard time. Thanks for this.
No problem, it's not the simplest method but I've found it's the easiest!

Oh yeah haha changing the notes one by one is way easier than doing it live. Thanks for the kind words, and for watching!
Nice and simple.. thank you!
Thanks for watching!
Great video! Thank you very much!
Thanks so much for watching!
You made me pick up the po20 again, really excellent explained with the melodies; thx for sharing your knowledge 🦇🦇🦇
Of course! Thanks for watching, I'm happy you were able to get back into the Arcade, it's such an awesome PO!
Beste explanation out there!
Thanks so much!
Really cool tutorial, thank you very much !
theres any way to put sharp or flat notes?
Dope bro, well explained
Thanks for making this! Is it possible to change the key you’re working in on the PO-20, or is it limited to Cmaj/Amin and their related chords?
Unfortunately you're stuck to the set chords, although they offer a pretty wide range of available notes.
Really really helpful! I’m off to patreon:)
And done!
@@heelersaurus THANK YOU!!!!!!! I seriously appreciate it, thanks so much! :)

Came a bit close to the melody of the OG Power Rangers theme at the start there 😉
Thanks for watching!
Can you change the sound that the chord function plays?
You cannot unfortunately

How come the bass notes changed with the chord but the melody didn't?

@@FreeBeat Thanks for the reply. What is the factor that tied the bass notes to the chord? Is it based on the sound selected, or something else?
@@dougmacknz It's just how the Arcade works. The bass note changes to the root of whatever chord you have selected.
This tune sounds like ko power rangers
