One of the 10 best pop songs ever recorded, along with S.O.S. (Abba), Here Comes the Sun (The Beatles), Staying Alive (The Bee Gees), Since You've Been Gone (Rainbow), and some others that constantly change depending on how I'm feeling at a particular moment (and how well my memory is working.)
The Turtles put out great singles and great albums. Saw them in '72 with The Kinks, Doors & Beach Boys. Their single "Eleanor" is one of the best singles I ever heard and it was actually written as a joke. Go figure. They were a great vocal band. They had one album where each song was a different style. It was called "The Battle Of The Bands" so they had a different sound for each band. Genius.
One of the best songs ever! Reminds me of my childhood. I remember my sister playing the radio at night while we went to sleep and lying in the dark listening to it. Good memories. So happy you love it 😍
Great Choice! Your instincts are right. The song starts by the singer saying, "Imagine Me and You, I Do" (eerie sounding). It's about unrequited love. Then he imagines a world where they should be together which leads to the joyful hook! The writers of this song confirm this. Please check out Wikipedia. From 1964 to 1969, the Turtles had a great run of hits that are as great to hear today, and they were then.
Such a popular song that they are touring with other bands from the 60s and calling it The Happy Together Tour. They have been doing this for about 15 years now.
Agreed, you can absolutely like / not like a song in the first few seconds. Especially because music tends to set a theme and repeat it. To me, this song has some of that tonality found in songs by the Association. I don't get the spooky vibe at all, though, which you often mention. I take those sounds differently. It just sounds delicate and restrained to me. But I know what you're talking about.
After "Happy together" Turtles couldn't get a real new hit (but cf Elenore below) Turtles broke up and the singers, Howard Kaylan and Mark Wolman (under the cover name "the Florescent leach & Eddie" for copyright purposes), joined Frank Zappa's band Mothers of Invention (2nd setup). "Tears began to fall" (live at Filmore East 1971 audio), the beautifully weird "Rudy wants to buy yez a drink" (album audio) or the iconic 25 min long story about "Billy the Mountain"!!!. After the two accidents (the fire described by Deep Purple in "Smoke on the water" and Frank a week later was pushed down a scene concrete pit by a jelous guy in the audience) the second version of Mothers of Invention also broke up. Kaylan & Wolman continued as "Flo & Eddie" with at least one hit (a parody of stupid love songs: "Eleanor") (I like the rhyming: ...know you better / ...etc.). They are both 77, but still active!
The spookiness may be intended to show his inner thoughts and wishful thinking. When he sings "how is the weather?" it reminds me of small talk. But like you, I always enjoyed most that loud happy chorus.
you mean verse and replace hook with chorus.and there's the middle 8. i imagine this is how it feels to be with your soul mate.even when thngs are grey they make it shine.
I love seeing people hear this song for the first time. It's perfect, pure musical joy.
You Baby, She'd Rather Be With Me, It Ain't Me Babe, You Showed Me, You know What I Mean and Eleanor are all great hits by the Turtles.
You Showed Me. A big change up, in the best sense.
OMG. My high school flag team did a routine to this music at football games back in 1973. My arms started to move on their own. Memories!
I've always loved this song for it's flat out happy vibes, plus the the minor key verses.
You'll never forget it!

Turtles/Elenore 😮😊
I was about Seven when this song came out. It was all over the radio and was the first song I ever memorized. I still remember to the day.❤

The verses are magnificent and the chorus is pop perfection
Wow takes me back to my teenage years😂

The song starts out in a minor key (dark sounding) and goes to a major key ( bright sounding ) at the bridge.
When there were phone booths and calls cost a dime 😂 Love this song and the Turtles ❤
You have some of my favorite songs :) and if I STILL know the words by heart of this song after all those years - this is one of them - good job !

I don't think you hear them enough in rock music But for me the trumpets seem to add so much to that song.

Number pne with a bullet!
ROTFLOL.

Hey Ace. Now this 1 brings back memories. The Letter from The Boxtops is also cool.
The spookiness may be intended to show his inner thoughts and wishful thinking. When he sings "how is the weather?" it reminds me of small talk. But like you, I always enjoyed most that loud happy chorus.
He is imagining that they can be together but the small is when he finally realizes that it won’t happen.
You should react to the box tops the letter & cry like a baby Also Manfred Mann Mighty Quinn
Yes, the Box Tops.
A great song I was in mens choir 9th grade we sang this ! Great reaction
The Florescent Leach and Eddie. Frank Zappa's favorite vocalists! Check out Just Another Band From LA, 1972, live Zappa with Flo and Eddie.
60's ROCk ...man, can't beat it ! Peace and Love :)
This hit is aptly named - Happy Together 😃
It IS a happy song from before i was born? Or shortly thereafter? 1964.
Yes, '67. I knew it was close, because I've always liked it
After the Turtles, the lead singers joined Frank Zappa’s group for a year or two.
Reaction ...... Great Job, thanks!
Your favorite part is called "the bridge" of a song.
Thanks!
I really appreciate that. Thank you 😁😁😁
