I have a 50 cal. (4-El 84's, no 5 band EQ sliders) not the 50 cal.+ (2-6L6's w/EQ sliders). It's a versatile KILLER! I added a Boogie 5 band EQ pedal to the mix and it REALLY came alive. One of the best values on the used market 7:55 (for now. People used to think Fender tweed Deluxe's were crap. Now you can't touch one for less than $3,000)
Paid $900 for my 50cal + head about 1991. Beautiful amp. Also weighed about 40# and another 60# for the cab. In time I went several other directions, but that was one sweet amp.

still love my .50+. the og .50 had el34 and the .50 plus had 6L6 power stages. (i believe it was only a difference between the two models and no same model differences)
@@colerichardson6739 So the tubes were essentially the only difference then huh? I kinda like the EL34's. At least yours sounds good. And was this clip boosted at all. no right?>
@@jamescassidy4045 Yes, except the tube weren't EL34 for the OG Caliber but EL84, not the same at all, even if their name sounds similar : EL84s do have way less headroom (they are low wattage low power tubes )and a lot less low end than 6L6, so whether it's a good or a bad thing depends on your style and personal tastes.
DC is darker and more 90s sounding than the 80s more trebly sound from the 50cal. I love mine so much I bought a second. I run it through a Marshall 1960A to brighten it a bit. The two channels are independent unlike the 50cal. 5 band EQ is switchable too. Play one if you get a chance. They’re great value and 100% Mesa.
Lead gain dimed, treble around 5-6,5 (it should be less than 7 for not so tight more sagging tone), bass dimed, mids around noon or higher. And a graphic eq can be seen on the video. I dial 60 at max, 240 at min, 2200 and 6000 pretty high. You can experiment with that with your rig. Cheers
Most definitely a matter of opinion. I have one in the closet that I only bring out if some random person drops by and wants to jam and I need an extra amp. I have tried everything to love this amp and it's just a huge piece of metal crap
One of Mesa’s poorly executed budget amps. It copies Fender’s blackface era circuitry, but adds a bunch of dumbass other things like a reverb tank inside the chassis that feedback if you turn the verb or master up too high, and it’s so cheap that it doesn’t even use a real phase inverter circuit, instead the PI tail voltage is taken from the bias supply. That way if the bias circuit ever goes bad, not only will you fry your power tubes, but one of your preamp tubes as well.
Honestly I could care less about this, do you have a set of ears ? Did you even watch the video ? As soon as I see one used, I'll buy it, because all nerdy/techies considerations are going out the window whenever an amp sounds that good.
@ yep, got ears. I replaced the filter caps, the transformer and a bunch of components on the board on one of these amps. That’s why I know they’re 💩. Mesa single rectifier was a much better amp, but that circuit ripped off Soldano instead of Leo Fender.
@@alvagoldbook2 Again, you missed the point entirely, techies are not the ones that play on stage and/or studios, musicians are : and musicians don't give a single sweet about filters caps and schematics.
@ techs are musicians. You should. Replacing old filter caps is one of the best things you can do to improve tone. It will often make an amp sound like it’s brand new. Old caps sound brittle and lifeless.
@@alvagoldbook2 "musicians" is a broad word, I know you understood what I meant by that : I can totally get that some people can be fascinated by how a TV works, I understand that, however MOST people don't give a shit as long as their TV/amp is powering on and doing what they expect from it.

One of my buds has a 50+ with the 6L6's. To my ears, I prefer the EL-84's. Person preference.

Such An EXTREMELY Underrated little Gem !!!!!! I had one Up until i got a MK IV .Which is AMAZING.. But I LOVE THEM BOTH !!!!!! 🤘🤘

Hi. Whats the year of your mesa boogie 50 caliber? Thanks
Nice tones and playing. I dig the Andy Timmons stuff.
Would have loved it if you zoomed in on the knobs for each tone.
