The woman's compositions are so tight, and ripe for improvisation. She has put together a great group of musicians for the different bands she has. I dig her music (BTW, she's hotter than a hot August day!).....
It's always been out there, the issue is getting people to want to listen to it. To be fair, about the only time that complex, technical popular music ever really got fairly popular was the brief period of prog's initial bloom in the 70s, and that was a fairly unique time in a lot of ways. Part of the problem is that people who are very technically good mostly are not able to combine that technicality with great (non-instrumental) songwriting of the sort that is widely appealing, i.e. accessible, emotionally impactful, catchy, non-wanky, with vocals, etc... That's hard to do. Purely instrumental music has almost never been widely popular in the modern era. Happens once in a while, but not often.
Back in 70ie,80ie, Pastorius , Alfonso jonshon, & co we are back to time when real musicians used to play real instruments 🎸 🎷🥁… so nice 👌🏽 !!!! Those musicians were not part of this planet back then !! Unbelievable !!
Juna is one of the greatest bassist ever! I don’t think she’s getting enough exposure because she’s Japanese and a female, but she’s definitely brilliant, and all of her accompanying musicians are top flight performers! I love them all and here in America real music like hers is desperately needed because we’re constantly bombarded with garbage forms of hiphop, and nasty mouth rappers, I’m a fan of Juna!
Let's not forget Grunge, Acid Rock and a few others Im sure that could make that list as well. But yeah,....today's Rap (if you want to call that music) is definitely garbage.
Check yourself...before you wreak yourself!!! Old school bassist are forgotten...Louis Johnson...Stanley Clarke...Larry Grapham...Verdine White ...the list goes on...I'm not saying g she's not good...just can't rate with the best. Yet!!!
Juna, I love the sound you create with a quartet, especially with Harumo on sax. Also it's great to hear you open with a tasteful slap bass part. Fantastic set by all!
