Dormant Rail Line Revived after 3 Years - Milford Industrial Track - 2021

  • In 2018 CSX's last customer in Milford, MA closed up and the need for rail service to the town was no longer needed. CSX truncated their local service to Bellingham, MA to continue servicing BlueLinx and Garelick Farms, about 6 miles east of Milford. Despite not being used the owner, MBTA, continued to inspect the tracks with their geometry train a few times a year. This kept the line open for future use and didn't require major work to revive rail service when needed. While CSX was pulling out a Milford, the Grafton & Upton Railroad kept pushing to get their line to Milford restored. The last time the G&U had operated to Milford was in 1983 but that changed when their line restoration was completed in June of 2020. Soon after the G&U acquired the freight rights from CSX to serve the customers in Bellingham, MA. Service was revived by the G&U on 2/1/2021 and since then the G&U has provided reliable and frequent service. This video shows the revival of the line after three years including the occasional inspection train, first train to use the restored connection at Milford, as well as the reinstated freight service through Milford to Bellingham/Franklin, MA. An interactive map is linked below to give the viewer the exact location of the rail line.

It was a shame rail lines disappeared so much. Trains can carry so much between cities. Passengers get a more interesting ride when they can see scenery. Have you ever seen an air liner dip down so passengers can see something on the ground?

Absolutely all of the rail lines were abandoned in the 50's and 60's in favor of trucks, NOW they can't get drivers and the traffic moves at a snails pace

South Coast Rail, great video. There needs to be a second or third track, in case a textile company or furniture company , sets up business in town. Another thing to look at, Dormant Rail should buy more Switcher locomotives called SW 1500. I can see business, just pick up at full speed, and those switcher locomotives are working over time. Dormant Rail line needs to hire more personnel. That;s what make a great railroad. Personnel and equipment together.

Quite normal, it’s not unheard of them doing it when they have to work Upton, and sometimes when they have to go to Bellingham and Franklin. They have shoved north coming from Bellingham and Franklin in the past but it doesn’t happen often

If you don’t have a runaround track then you have to have an engine on both ends which is comon on short lines….these 1100 engines are ideal for running in either direction…..these are mp’s which are equipped with a road/yard selector switch…..we had the 1170 & 1156 were i worked out of…

The current operation requires a locomotive on each end of the train due to track arrangement. They also handled a long train that was dropped off in Upton and Hopedale before continuing to Milford.

What does Garelick farms, ship in or out? powdered milk outbound.? What is that large facility on the southwest corner of Bellingham Junction (it doesn't have a label on Google maps)? That appears to be the only Bluelink distributor in Southeast, New England. With a 350,000 sq ft. building, seems like they would need a lot of spine cars.
