LAST TRAINS on Bay Colony Railroad's Millis Line - 2022

  • Last year the Bay Colony had a brief reprise of service on the Millis, MA Rail Line after about three years of no traffic. The railroad's future looked bright at the time with the possibility of regular service but unfortunately it didn't last. One move was done in January bringing loads in and they left sometime in March of 2022. Once again a string of cars showed up in June and left on the last train on July 5, 2022. Now in December of 2023 the Bay Colony has been taken over by the Mass Coastal Railroad making these the last moves on the Millis Line by the Bay Colony. Whether or not Mass Coastal runs trains up here is to be determined but the ink has dried on Bay Colony's operations. This video shows the movement of cement hoppers in January, June, and July 2022. Other than the empties going back in March these were all the movements on the line in that time. Prior to the 2022 operations there were some trains in 2019 when the sporadic service to Tresca Bros was more frequent.

I think as we’ve seen so far if anyone can improve the rail shipping prospects it would be Mass Coastal.

The problem with the Millis Line is Millis itself. They do NOT want any industry and even give the existing ones a hard time. Tresca Brothers wanted to expand the rail operations at one time. Another similar industry wanted to come in and was denied and the existing warehouse at the end of the track is an indoor pot farm with the expansive parking lot with rail access being made into a solar farm. Former GAF site is slated to become condos after they figure out how to clean up the contamination. The trackage could become three miles of car storage but I am pretty sure they would complain about that, too!

so will the railroad right of way be available for a bike rail trail? I love my trains but being able to ride a bike to Boston gives me a boner.

@@bill8985 Not sure what will transpire. The State owns the right of way so it would be up to them. May depend on how good the railroad marketing department is.

I’m not sure what Mass Coastal is going to do with the locomotives but I hope they keep them all. I know 1705 and 1706 are in better shape, I heard 1701 is FRA exempt, it needs TLC and I really hope they don’t scrap 1701. These locomotives can go forever if properly maintained and cared for.

@@hannamaniacrailproductions5082 that’s weird because 1706 looks great, to me it looks like there’s nothing wrong with it. Both 1705 and 1706 look great, their both in good condition compared to 1701 which is rusting out and being vandalized in the past. In my opinion all 3 can very tough and they can go forever if properly maintained

@@SouthCoastRailVideos A rail fan who’s also an employee for MBTA or some related company, he said 1701 is FRA exempt and will probably be scrapped on site. I know you can’t believe everything you hear, I don’t know much about Mass Coastal, I think they should keep the 3 locomotives, 1705 and 1706 are in great condition probably because they operate a little more than 1701 which is sitting unguarded taking on all kinds of weather. I know it’s the company decision, myself and I think should consider that they keep them, they can all be very tough and they can go forever if properly maintained, I think they’ll look great in Mass coastal paint

It's actually former Detroit Toledo Shore Line. It operated on that railroad from the 1950s through the Grand Trunk takeover in the 1980s until sold off in the early 2000s

If this is the end of operations on this rail line, I hope that locomotive 1701 will find a new home, whether it be another short line or maybe a tourist railroad or excursion railroad. It's a former Detroit toledo and shoreline locomotive and I would like to see it saved, not scrapped if possible.

I guess that outfit never heard of a weed sprayer before. It's not bc it's an old engine, it started to drizzle and before that it was just all that grass and weeds. Anything green is a sob even trying to pull empties off you don't have the momentum. It's even worse if you don't have any sand

Anyway, a part of it was already shown on YT months ago. Just a longer remake.
It´s even in the "short" . You know when you hope for more views...too bad cause the video wasn´t bad and interesting. Maybe some photos will appear next ?
