As a divorced Aussie who lives in Wales and never gets to see his kids on Christmas day this song chokes me and fills my eyes with tears Merry Christmas everyone
i thought you guys might like this; being Brits you get it. -- this is the most Loved song by Australia's most loved singer / songwriter - all his songs are Fabulous stories that capture a certain time and place and peoples
Everyone loves Paul Kelly, he's a musician's musician, he's an extraordinary poet, but he has a unique talent of writing lyrics about things no one's ever written about before, yet they can resonate deeply with almost anyone. Great reaction fellas, thank you for this lovely bonus. ❤
Paul Kelly - Australia’s greatest story teller. As an Aussie myself, being the black sheep of the family myself for 12 years, this always hits hard every year. Merry Christmas to you both and your families. Thanks for all the Aussie content this year.
Paul Kelly is an absolutely phenomenal songwriter and performer. He has a real gift for writing songs that are sentimental without being saccharine. He really captures the earnest emotion of everyday things beautifully.
I've never visited Australia, and "Making Gravy Day" is new to me. It's a good song; happy holidays to all of the Thamesmen viewers, subscribers, and fans Down Under!
Paul Kelly did a lot work for the underprivileged so he was asked to write a song for the Salvation Army’s Christmas Appeal in the 1990’s. Instead of writing a traditional Christmas song about families coming together, Kelly tells the story of a family split apart. Rather than writing about joy and thanksgiving he tells the story of a fallen man's regret, loneliness and fear. It's really a story of a 'sinful' man seeking redemption, forgiveness and love which is the real meaning of Christmas.
Also, let's not forget the superb musicians on stage with PK here, including Peter 'Lucky' Luscombe on drums, who has appeared with every Aussie act worth knowing about over the last 30 years.
Brilliant job guys... Paul Kelly released a newer video for this song with a compilation of people miming to his song not being able to come together for Christmas because of Covid. That one I can't watch without crying.
Nice jobs lads. Yeah us Aussies can come across a bit carefree/ careless but as a population we're rather sentimental and romantic... in our own way. Happy gravy day 🤤
And to you. For us the reason we have kept exploring Australian music as we love the level of comments and their passion and quality. Makes us want to come and do more. Wish other countries realized this!
There are 2 Aussie xmas songs I listen to every year, this is one - so thank you for reacting to this. The other and I hope it is yet to come as a reaction is White Wine in the Sun by Tim Minchin.

You know, in America you have this singer songwriter that is America's equivalent to Paul Kelly. I think his name is Bob Dylan. In all seriousness, Paul Kelly is a master craftsman when it comes to putting words together. As an Australian, and I think a lot of Australians would agree, he writes and sings about Australia. His words are so relatable, as if to give a voice to Australia. Yes his voice is not one of the best, but there comes a point where( in my opinion) the message of the song supercedes the voice. And for me after a while, his voice actually sounds pretty good and fits well with his style of music.
Australia’s version of Leonard Cohen..and Dylan! A national iconic treasure… ❤️❤️❤️ And I am always impressed at the Byron Bay Blues Festival that all the 18yo know the words to all of his songs… he’s been around since the 70’s.
There's nothing wrong with his voice, his voice is perfect for his music. There is nobody else in the world that could do justice to this song vocally anywhere near as good as Paul Kelly. Decades ago I once heard somebody during an open mike media interview session with Cat Stevens criticise the quality of his vocals while addressing him. He too could not have been more wrong.
Excellent. It’s not Christmas lunch without GRAVY with ya 🦃 and sprouts and you don’t make the gravy until everyone’s there together. Paul Kelly is a wonderful storyteller

Absolutely, as an Australian overseas unable to go home for Christmas 2020 and 2021, because of border closures, I cried and cried whilst watching the re-release over and over, last Christmas
First, I Just want to say thanks for playing this at this time of the year. A major part of Christmas in Australia these days. It really is touching. Everything else has been said by you and the people in the comments. Thanks again, We all really appreciate it.
They played it in the supermarket at 8.00a.m. yesterday morning(21st) while I was shopping I hope to here it somewhere in Australia every 21 December.Very moving
As soon as he starts strumming the guitar, you’re hooked, and then the ‘slide’ just plays on your emotions along with the lyrics throughput. What a damn good song!
This has made my day! Hands down, the best Christmas song around, by one of the greatest songwriters there is. Evokes strong emotion without lapsing into sentimentality. Happy Gravy Day, guys!

How to make gravy is a stand alone classic but To her doors also one that brings out the emptions written by Pau Kelly . Kelly is truly a national treasure
Was at the supermarket in stkilda , Melbourne last week … and there was the great man buying his groceries… such a gentleman and poet .. Australian icon … merry Christmas from Australia 🇦🇺 ❤
Gravey is an awesome Christmas song that hits home for everyone away from their families at Christmas. Thanks for doing it. Paul Kelly has heaps of cracking tunes but for Me, 'From Little Things Big Things Grow" is the one song that stands above rest.
Paul Kelly is a fantastic storyteller. I love From little things big thing grow. From St Kilda to Kings Cross, Dumb things, To her door, Before to long, Leaps and bounds, Firewood and candles, and the one you Definitely won't play lol. Bradman.
oh well done, just awoke to hear its Gravy day on the radio. and yes this means so much to us in OZ. its a fantastic song by a great artist. PS, there was a version done last year from People away from home singing to the song. Very meaningful
You’ve just described the essence of that song, family. Paul Kelly is a master story teller and the band is magic. Well played boys. I’m an Aussie and I’ve seen PK many many times. Welcome to the Kelly Gang
This song really had a revival in Australia in 2020 because many people were unable to travel to be with their families at Christmas. I had heard it but never really listened to it before then, but since taking the moment to really listen, it makes me emotional every time I hear it. Those beautifully relatable lyrics, and that electric guitar that somehow sounds mournful, nostalgic and hopeful all at the same time. 'Dumb Things' is great, and if you want to see more Paul Kelly, 'To Her Door' is one of his biggest hits, with the same kind of down to earth storytelling that hits you right in the feels.
I was thinking about this one again, and we can joke that we’ve got a heritage that’s steeped in convict culture, but there’s another fantastic Aussie song based around a character dealing with life in jail. Four Walls by Cold Chisel is a fantastic short and sharp song about life in a jail. It doesn’t go into much detail, but paints a desolate, soul-destroying picture in just a few stanzas. Barnesy delivers a perfect vocal for the mood of the song, once again an excellent conduit for Don Walker’s superb songwriting. Bands such as Cold Chisel and Divinyls did shows inside jails occasionally, which may have prompted Walker’s ideas on this song.
Paul Kelly, Australia's Bob Dylan. One of the greatest story tellers. Never fails to bring a tear to the eye. Check out 'Winter Coat' by Paul - the imagery and atmosphere he conjur up is brilliant.
Guy's a great bonus Christmas track. I think it's time for you both to be made honorary Aussies. Merry Christmas to you both and best wishes to your family. I myself will spend Christmas alone with Covid. Cheers from Australia 🇦🇺.
What a perspective .. Paul is an amazing songwriter, the ache of separation from family and traditions, with way too much thinking time on the inside ( the reference to his brother holding Rita too tight). Paul Kelly is so worth a deep dive. Love your work guys.
Thank you. Thank you for really listening. Yes, this song touches the soul, I often have to wipe a tear away, thinking of being so isolated and locked up at, well, any important time. I've never been to gaol (or if you are American, jail), but I knew someone who did something silly, and missed his son's first birthday. So yeah, this song plays with the heart strings in a totally unexpected way. Paul is a poet who managed to put some of his songs to music, and done an absolute great job at it. Again, thanks for the reaction, I'm glad you guys got it.
Thank you so much for playing this great Aussie classic. I was one of the many asking that you should react to this song and I'm so glad you did. I hope you both have a great Christmas and that you continue to react to Aussie Rock in 2023.
Paul Kelly is playing at the iconic Fremantle Prison in Western Australia in March 2023. (With the wonderful Vika & Linda Bull). I really hope to experience this awesome track in front of a Cell Block that has 136 years of incarceration in its history... for all the convicts and prisoners who 'stood in line' on Christmas day waiting for their meal. I think the 'gravy' is also a metaphor for doing well in life, he's going to try to pay his loved ones back for messing up. PK is the greatest storyteller, you need to hear more of his stuff. Happy Christmas guys. ☮️🎄
Hi guys, a Kiwi here viewing your show for the first time. Down here in Australasia making gravy is slang for making lots of money, so that's why the song ends with "pay im all back". That's the other message, his regret, remorse, and determination to pay reparation.
It’s nice you guys did this. A little Christmas present to all your Australian fans. Interesting you brought up Covid, because last year Paul Kelly released a video collage of fans who sent in a a video of themselves giving their families messages for Christmas while they were away from them, either locked out of the country because of Covid rules or some who’s Dad or son or husband passed away. Basically, it’s a song that has elements of a usual boring family Christmas, nothing special but we miss it when we can’t be there. A typically Australian understatement - both the song itself and the story it tells. Thanks guys.
Love, love, love this song. It always brings a tear to my eye, and really symbolises the meaning of Christmas and family to me. Thank you for reacting to it.
Paul Kelly has done a few songs that are part of our culture now. "Leaps and Bounds" resounds with anyone going to the MCG to watch a game of footy. He really is a brilliant story teller.
I first heard this song on 21 December 1996. I was in a car park in Sydney. As I heard the lyrics, I stopped and cried. It was particularly relevant to me at that time.
Not bad for a song in a hurry aye! 🤣💞 Happy gravy day everyone! So glad you got to hear this finally and if you wanna hear it again, watch the 2020 lockdown version of it. That one really brings tears to my eyes, but in a warm and squishy way.🥰💜💚 P. S. We used to call Paul Kelly the man with a woman's soul.
@@TheThamesmen Paul actually has written a number of brilliant songs from the woman's perspective. 'Sweet guy" and "Everything's turning to white" being fantastic examples. Dumb things is a great song too. Yeah, we love our PK. Merry Christmas.
Glad you enjoyed it so much, PK is a national treasure. Sounds like a gravy challenge could be the successor to the pickle poisoning. Cheers lads, have a beaut holidays.
You are in rarified air here. Paul Kelly is Australia's modern poet laureate and, arguably, Australia's best modern songwriter. Alex, I loved the way you captured the essence of the song and reduced it down, like a good base stock, to the core elements: family, regret, promises, mistrust and of course the central role that food (gravy) plays in bringing loved ones together and helping to put divisions aside, even if just for one day. I am impressed by your rapid understanding of the lyrics because you expressed them better than I ever could (don't tell anyone I said that, I will deny it). Thank whichever God you subscribe to that the Christmas carol that Kelly wanted to record for the album had already been taken. That led to the writing of a Christmas song to rival "The Fairytale of New York". Very different songs but both amazing pieces of writing. Thanks to the whole team for bringing us this gem.
Happy gravy day gentlemen! Fabulous reaction as always. This song never fails to make my hairs stand up as well as a little tear rolls down the cheek. Merry Christmas to you both and to all your subs and viewers 🎅🎄🤶
Happy gravy day. A testiment to PK's writing skill. Heaps of comments from around the world who love it after hearing it for the first time. Australian but global. Totally agree with TTM watching the version made from clips from around the world. The song is decades old but the pandemic elevated it in everyone's minds because EVERYONE had a story about being separated at Christmas. Definitely watch more PK
Firstly, Happy Gravy Day! Secondly, Paul Kelly is an utter genius, and you should definitely check out more of his work. "They Thought I Was Asleep," "To Her Door," and "Dumb Things" are personal faves, and I reckon almost every Australian over the age of 30 knows the lyrics to "To Her Door."
Happy Gravy Day. That was a pleasant surprise. Glad you enjoyed this quasi-anthem. It’s masterful songwriting and storytelling. Hope all your families are together on all the right occasions. Cheers for 2023!!
Paul Kelly just kills it every single time. This is a classic but there's so much more in his canon. As for making gravy, he forgets to add the quintessential Aussie ingredient, Vegemite!!
Great choice guys! An Aussie Christmas classic. Love to see you react to 'White wine in the sun' by Tim Minchin it's another amazing Aussie Christmas song about the pull of coming home to Aus and family for Christmas 😁
Ladies and Gentlemen, the true Australian Christmas Carol. From ANOTHER Adelaide boy, Paul Kelly. "This time, we didnt forget the gravy" (cartoon quote) Thats not even his "real" band, thats a mixed band of our good live and session musos, the base of the "Rockwiz" Television Show "in-house" band.
Yeah Paul Kelly is a leg in Oz he is the Beez Kneez lol! And yes you guys have loved and liked a lot of comments from me and others when most reactors don't even comment? I know this must be a big effort to do, so thank you for your time to react to our comments. Merry Christmas guys, can't wait for that gravy on the 25th lol!
Paul Kelly, Australia's Poet Laureate in the mold of Springsteen or Bragg or Cohen. Storyteller and holder of a mirror up to society. For a heartbreaker, try "Deeper Water." For a sense of finding home in a new place, try "From St Kilda to King's Cross." For an ode to Aussie sporting legends, try "Leaps & Bounds." And for gritty storytelling "Darling It Hurts." Vast catalogue.
I haven’t seen my Son on Christmas Day for 6 years (after separation from my ex-wife), and this won’t be any different. But he is coming on Boxing Day for a couple of days, and I’m so happy. Christmas has always been a big deal to my family, but due to circumstances beyond my control, I went from all the hoopla to just me in a small bedroom. Treasure each moment guys, I hope everyone has a great Christmas.
Happy Christmas to you sir Hope you have an excellent few days with your son and can make memories if not gravy! Thanks for being part of our world too
@@TheThamesmen Thanks so much, and for creating such a warm and welcoming environment with your channel, it’s a pleasure to watch. Merry Christmas to you guys too.
The time he’s spent with his Dad will be one of his greatest treasures. Boys especially, really need their Dads and they need them more and more as they grow. It’s how they learn to be good men. I couldn’t be prouder of my husband and sons. Good, strong, loving, kind men. I’m sure your boy will be the same because he has a dad who cares. Wishing you the merriest Christmas, Sheamus xxx
For me the gravy goes one step further. You smell lots of lovely smells christmas morning, but you kind of just smile and continue with what you're doing. But once you smell the gravy, it signafies that christmas lunch is about to start, it's the last thing made, everything else is ready. It's tied to the memory of coming to the table with family.
To my family the Roast Chicken was slow cooked in Lard and Herbs in an electric frying pan. Then in the seconds of it being finished as one person began to divvy it up onto plates along with the rest of the roast potato's, sweet potato, pumpkin, peas, sprouts that were all in there as well. Another is quickly throwing in the gravy mix into the juices that the roast Chicken was marinating in to make the gravy out of the left overs. Dear god it was awesome!!! Looking back not the most healthy way of making gravy, but the taste was to die for. *Ahem, not literally*
Its so emotive, deep & meaningful. reminds us of those missing Christmas or on their own. It makes us think & be thankful for what we might have, & think of others who are sad.
So very glad you did this one boys. It's not officially Christmas over here until you hear this song getting played. Paul's back catalogue is huge and his songwriting just impeccable. From the softest of ballads to full on boot stomping rock - he does it all. Couldn't narrow down the choice but - To Her Door, From Little things Big Things Grow, Leaps and Bounds, Everything is Turning to White, Melting are a few of just the greatest pieces of poetry put to music. (A Paul Kelly month might just scratch the surface) Keep up the great work.
Yeah, hard to choose my favourite Paul Kelly song, agree with 'To Her Door" and "From little Things Big Things Grow" [co-written with Kev Carmody] but have recently discovered "Come meet Me in the Middle of the Air"

A song with no chorus and it's stunning. Tim Minchin's White wine in the sun is another good AU Christmas song.

Check out 'Winter Coat' by Paul - the imagery and atmosphere he conjur up is brilliant.
But with a much nicer voice.
Thanks for the effort of trying to get this out on Gravy Day.
Merry Christmas.
We loved it. Happy Christmas
Thank you gents. Great reaction to a fantastic song/institution of this fine country. Looking forward to Aussie week 4
We need more time!
@@TheThamesmen absolutely no need to rush it when the time strikes we'll all enjoy it
Our pleasure!
Paul Kelly is an amazing song writer. Loved this one.
Hi guys, a Kiwi here viewing your show for the first time. Down here in Australasia making gravy is slang for making lots of money, so that's why the song ends with "pay im all back". That's the other message, his regret, remorse, and determination to pay reparation.
A simple one of his is Don't stand so close to the window, it's chorus builds each verse
Thanks hope to do more
It’s nice you guys did this.
Classic Christmas song from a classic Aussie , Paul Kelly 🎉
Love, love, love this song. It always brings a tear to my eye, and really symbolises the meaning of Christmas and family to me. Thank you for reacting to it.
Happy Xmas and be well. X
Best reaction ever - you guys just get it
Merci!!
Wow. Don’t. You’re making me well up. Be well.
We’re good 😊
This song is always played on Christmas in Australia. Love it
A great tradition
Not bad for a song in a hurry aye! 🤣💞
Happy gravy day everyone! So glad you got to hear this finally and if you wanna hear it again, watch the 2020 lockdown version of it. That one really brings tears to my eyes, but in a warm and squishy way.🥰💜💚
P. S. We used to call Paul Kelly the man with a woman's soul.
Ohhh is that woke?
@@TheThamesmen Lol! No thankfully 🤣
@@TheThamesmen Paul actually has written a number of brilliant songs from the woman's perspective. 'Sweet guy" and "Everything's turning to white" being fantastic examples. Dumb things is a great song too. Yeah, we love our PK. Merry Christmas.
@@Mrmikey0909 Yeah I love sweet guy sung by Renee Geyer, who also does another favourite of mine Careless.
Glad you enjoyed it so much, PK is a national treasure. Sounds like a gravy challenge could be the successor to the pickle poisoning. Cheers lads, have a beaut holidays.
HA HA :)
A Christmas song like no other. His nephew Dan Kelly is on electric guitar. And yes, you timed it well with Gravy day! Cheers lads!
You can tell a song is amazing if it makes Alex forget to make a convict colony joke about an Australian song involving prison!
@@christhecurator haha, I will have to watch out for that,
(Thanks for all your work, Chris).
Happy gravy day gentlemen! Fabulous reaction as always. This song never fails to make my hairs stand up as well as a little tear rolls down the cheek. Merry Christmas to you both and to all your subs and viewers 🎅🎄🤶
Same to you!
I used to see PK quite a bit live. Not on purpose at first he’d be supporting bands I’d go see. But he always impressed. Man this made me homesick.
Happy Gravy Day.
That was a pleasant surprise.
Glad you enjoyed this quasi-anthem. It’s masterful songwriting and storytelling.
Hope all your families are together on all the right occasions.
Cheers for 2023!!
Thanks Sean!!! And to you and yours
Paul Kelly just kills it every single time. This is a classic but there's so much more in his canon. As for making gravy, he forgets to add the quintessential Aussie ingredient, Vegemite!!
Happy Gravy Day everyone! Such a fantastic song, the music, the lyrics and the voice!
Paul Kelly is a story teller/singer type of artist and most of his stuff is deeper than most modern music.
Great choice guys! An Aussie Christmas classic. Love to see you react to 'White wine in the sun' by Tim Minchin it's another amazing Aussie Christmas song about the pull of coming home to Aus and family for Christmas 😁
Thanks chaps , I did piss in your pockets 3 months ago about this after you did his first song 🎧
knew you would dig on Gravy.
:)
Ladies and Gentlemen, the true Australian Christmas Carol. From ANOTHER Adelaide boy, Paul Kelly.
"This time, we didnt forget the gravy" (cartoon quote)
Thats not even his "real" band, thats a mixed band of our good live and session musos, the base of the "Rockwiz" Television Show "in-house" band.
So glad you did this today, I had a feeling you might. Happy Gravy Day 🎄
Blessings on Gravy day to you fine Gents, Thanks for this it has brought us Aussies much joy❤😂
We loved it!!
Hes a great balladeer, so many great songs. I believe that you would love To Her Door.
Thanks for being part of our world too
that's a tough one mate....! wishing you a Merry Xmas
@@TheThamesmen Thanks so much, and for creating such a warm and welcoming environment with your channel, it’s a pleasure to watch. Merry Christmas to you guys too.
@@garyspeed8961 Thanks Gary, and a Merry Christmas to you too.
Everything Alex said. Song made me tear up
Be well Suzi!! Love A xx
(A Paul Kelly month might just scratch the surface)
Keep up the great work.
Yeah, hard to choose my favourite Paul Kelly song, agree with 'To Her Door" and "From little Things Big Things Grow" [co-written with Kev Carmody] but have recently discovered "Come meet Me in the Middle of the Air"
Great song isn't it? Paul Kelly reminds me of an Australian Bob Dylan.
Your closing credits have me in stitches! 🤣
:) Take care
Such a brilliant song for Christmas! It brought tears to my eyes! Thank you for reacting to this song.
Paul Kelly is the Australian version of Bob Dylan 🤗
With a better voice
It's extra special with the actual clip with people all around the world singing it merry Xmas everyone
Yes!!! More PK please. Happy Gravy Day boys thanks.
