Anyone here notice Brian Nankervis from that greatest of all Australian rock shows "Rockwiz"? Which ironically was held in The Gershwin Room in a pub called The Esplanade in St. Kilda in Melbourne! Being Australian it was naturally shortened to "The Espy".
I'm a grown arse man too and have seen this version dozen of times and it hits me just as hard every single time. Just another reason why this song holds such a special place in the Australian Psyche. Happy Gravy Day.
Paul Kelly has an amazing gift for getting to the absolute essence of what it is to be Australian and live in Australia...the good and the bad.. and without having to resort to stupid cliches. This song always hits me in the chest and this version doubly so. And, being a proud Melburnian, when I'm away Leaps and Bounds gets me a little choked up!
We couldn’t be with my dad in hospital for his final weeks, and we held his funeral outside around the grave. A few short weeks later, I missed the birth of my long years awaited grandchild. I couldn’t be there with my daughter, and I couldn’t meet the baby until she was a month old. This brings that time back so forcefully. But I know many, many people went through so very much more, and I empathise with their pain and admire their courage and resilience.
Always liked the song, but seeing this video with it just took it to a whole new emotional level for me .. I was taken by surprise and was brushing away my tears by the end of it .. Great reaction guys, and so glad that you were feeling it too .. Thanks, Wayne 👍
Now you need to finish the Aussie Christmas double and watch Tim Minchin - 'White wine in the Sun' . Bring on Paul Kelly MONTH - a couple of selections - 'Everything is turning to White' , 'Every F#*king City' , 'Midnight Rain' , 'Our Sunshine' , 'Randwick Bells' , 'Looks so fine', and about a hundred others.
Oh guys.....watching this clip again, brought so much emotions up for me because I'm in Melbourne, where we had the most amount of lockdowns in the whole of Oz, for the least amount of cases!! (Don't get me started on the Dictator Premier of our state, Victoria, at the time!).....So this clip is bittersweet. I love this song, but this particular clip does evoke strong emotions of those total unnecessary lockdowns. Thankyou for your true, heartfelt, reaction. And, yes....family is important. Cheers.
I've never been to prison but I have been the recipient of this phone call from my brother (more than once) and my cousin when they screwed up big time. It's an awkward experience. Conversation with someone you know and love, given their circumstance is extremely difficult.
Happy Gravy Day! Sitting here at work, watching, tearing up a little, pretending to yawn so I have a reason for the tears ... One day I'll get through this without tears.
Happy Gravy Day Australia!! And to those 2 clowns on the youtube too. ;) Nice Star of India shirt you have there George. The most annoying English word is please in all caps. Never do that. That version of the song is really, really powerful. I got some water in my eyes watching that. Wonderful stuff, Paul Kelly really is a treasure. Don't feel bad at all fellas, I was crying at work.
I loved this so much. ok, i cried all the way through it. I know it so well. This is the best version. We were in such severe lockdown during COVID. Here in Melbourne we couldnt travel more than5 kilometres from home and could only be out 2 hours a day. It saved lives but it was tough being so far away from the world and missing our families. This song, at that time, with this sentimentality .. superb! If you guys didn't get emotional at this one, you would be robots. I loved that it hit you and you cried along with us. It is sad, beautiful and quintessentially Aussie! Happy Gravy Day!!!
Ty Guys I knew when you saw this amazing re release you would feel exactly the same I did when I first saw it. It touches our souls so deeply as we all missed someone those horrible years we endured worldwide we all became Joe locked away. Paul 's genius is endless but I doubt even he could have seen how this song fitted so well with what happened. It is now Gravy Day here in OZ and it will be a great Christmas this year as most can be with who they love and see those they miss and remember how tough we did it but we did it together here I am so proud to be aussie. TY again guys for showing us so much love I send it back to you both. Enjoy your Christmas and may 2024 be an awesome year as well keep the music coming both of you, I am so happy to be a subscriber. Keep Safe Keep Strong 🦘🦘🦘🦘🎵🎵🎶🎶❤❤❤❤🎄🎄🎄🎄🎅🤶
Ah, thank you guys! When you do your Paul Kelly week (hooray!), consider one of the tracks from a Paul Kelly/Neil Finn collaboration (“Going Your Way (Live)”, 2013). So many excellent possibilities there, with 2 great Irish tenors
This hit so hard because a lot of people felt like they were prisoners, we were only allowed out of the house to exercise one hour a day. We could only go out for groceries but not more than 5 kilometres from our home. It was terrible!
Great reaction as always, thank you, I remember a song I’m sure was Paul Kelly from 25+ years ago that I’ll play later, “have you ever seen Sydney from a 747 at night” great talent 🙏🦉❤️🐊👍
You buggers! Had me weeping wildly on the morning train. Thanks for another great reaction, and for all the entertainment this year. Wishing you and your families a merry Christmas. Also, I add my voice to the recommendation to add Tim Minchin's White Wine in the Sun to your Christmas experience.
Wow talk abt tugging on the ol heart strings 😢. Paul Kelly is an amazing story teller thru his music . This version is very emotional, we all have lost or are missing someone so it hits hard . Thanks for doing this guys much respect . Happy gravy day 😊
Every year now on "Gravy day" I think about my older brother who was born on this day in 1954. He would have turned 69 today but passed away on 4/4/2019. Just finished work so plan on having a celabratory beer with him. Hope you are happy and at peace wherever you are Mate! E
My Father in law was born on this day in 1931, and passed in June 2016. I am sorry for your loss 🕊. It makes it even more special when they are born on Gravy Day.
@@kazz3956 Only been called that since 2021, seems to be sticking around. I remember hearing about it when I was driving round a pretty deserted Fitzroy street during Covid doing my servicing job and I was thinking about my brother. They had a little talk about it on MMM before playing the song, had to pull over as it broke me up a fair bit, still does as I had tears watching this clip. Thank you for your kind words.
Well, from this Australian, I just want to say that you two Poms are amazing people too. Love your channel. Have a great Christmas from all of us Down Under
I wake up on Gravy Day, the 21st December, & im happy its Gravy Day. So this vid during covid made a real impact. So many people lining up in gaol probably lke this song
I think I liked this version even more than last year's, which was wonderful in its own right. I want to wish everyone in my "Thamesmen family" a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year as well.
Thank you. We lost our dad during COVID. He was supposed to have a big funeral and people from far and wide would have made the effort to see him off. Instead, we had a graveside burial (not normally a thing in Australia) and 10 of us - including myself and my sister. We couldn't even hug our cousins or shake the hand of the celebrant. We couldn't even offer a cup of tea - no wake. And then we had planned to hold a memorial a year later, but restrictions were in place. So this one really got to me. It's such a beautiful song and the film clip is really moving. Thanks guys! Ps. Yay for a Paul Kelly week!
Yes always weep at this version. Lockdowns weren’t that bad for me because all my family live in Adelaide but I saw a lot of my friends going through hell missing their family in other states and countries. But the worst thing for me was my dad died in June 2020 (not from covid) and we could only have 30 people at the funeral. All my friends wanted to be there to support me but with family and friends of my dad I could only have 2.
Wow, this had tears running down my cheeks, it bought back memories of covid, I live alone in Melbourne and we were locked down for 262 days, longest in the world. It was so devastatingly lonely as Melbourne had a 5km travel curfew and I lived 20 km from anyone I knew. Hard times.
Happy Gravy Day guys. This song always gives the feels. This version is I feel is the best. It really makes you think about the lyrics. It also gave me a new appreciation of the freedoms we do have. Merry Christmas from Oz.
One of my favourite clips of this fabulous song. I was wondering how far you guys would get in before being blidsided. 😊 As to the Paul Kelly Anthology the man just keeps turning out amazing music, so your spoilt for choice.
Personally, COVID is the best experience of my life. It changed how i work, and now every day is so much more enjoyable, compared to the 3 hours i used to commute every day, as i now work from home and i got to be with my best mate for 16 years, every day in her last 2 years of her life...its my dog and the love of my life...life has never been the same for me.

Lots of places did it tough, but Melbourne had endured an almost 4 month lockdown for 2020 and then a few in 2021 including a 2.5 month one. People were pretty punch drunk from all that. Same as all over there was a worry at Christmas that even if you could visit family you might unwittingly make a beloved family member ill, so even if it was legal to visit there were those who didn’t and then the politics of pro and anti-vaccs added extra hurdles. This video is poignant for showing the end result of that , and it does a great job.
I’ve always loved this song - I’m American but I’ve been married to an Aussie for years. After COVID it hit me so much harder, and every time.

A second sentimental Christmas song by an Australian that organically pairs with How to Make Gravy is "White Wine in the Sun" by Tim Minchin.
Stick around!
