I've owned both and the HK obviously has way more clean headroom and isn't designed with the high gain like the Terror. While both floor amps, I find them very different. I find I can get more volume and run pedals better with the HK. I sold the Terror, but it's still awesome too.
I used to have a Terror Stamp, but I sold it after a while because there wasn’t much brightness in the sound and it was already “crunchy” at half gain knob. Really nice comparison, probably the Stompman will be one of my next purchases because it’s definitely cleaner (I play especially chill/ambient music) and this video confirms my expectations
Another idea would have been to change the tube to a different kind that still fits in the same socket. Some people will switch out a 12AX7 tube for a 12AU7, will reduce noise and volume, but provide more clarity before distorting. There are other tubes, too.
Hi, thanks for the video. Great idea to compare the two. I have the Terror Stamp, but I'm very curious to play with a StompMan, which unfortunately doesn't have many reviews. You can tell they are equivalent, but what do you think about the extra features of StompMan?
I think they are very similar products and I find the Orange Terror STAMP great because it has a tube and distorts really well, just like I would want an Orange amp to do. I find the H&K StompMan a lot cleaner overall and maybe because of that it is also a great pedal platform. I find the extra controls on the StompMan to mostly be able EQ and being able to dial in the tone a little better (Presence, Resonance and Tone) but the Sagging is all about simulating that amp compression and breakup you get when you normally crank up and amp , so this is a fun control to try and get different sounds and textures with.
@@SergeiVlassov good point, but you can go direct with an analog cab sim with the Revolt. If I had to choose between the two, I would get the H&K, but you can get the Orange Stamp so cheap used! May don't seem to like the sound of it though? There are tuns on the used market.
@@wootks yes, they are for different applications. About orange - you can always resell it if you don't like it. I do it constantly with pedals and amps :)
I have the stamp but wonder if I'm missing out on volume. I use it as a pedal board amp for my quad cortex running it into the efx return. Does really well for that. Wondering if the stompmans presence, resonance, and sag work in the efx loop return
Also did u happen to use the stompman into a 4ohm cab and notice it was 25watts louder sounding. I know there's not actually much of a difference but wondering if it's at least a third louder than the stamp. I plan to do a comparison on both when I get my hands on a stompman
According to the manual, the StompMan has a Mode switch. This switch defines what the Bypass / FX Loop footswitch activates. Mode switch in Bypass position: If Bypass is activated, the red LED above the footswitch lights up and the signal at the Input jack is routed directly to the power amp section, Gain and Tone no longer have any effect. In contrast to the FX Loop's return, which is only affected by Master and Solo, the power amp controls for Sagging, Presence and Resonance are still active. Ideal for amplification and sound refinement of upstream preamps or modelers. To adjust the input level there is a trim knob on the bottom panel, see section “Bottom Panel”.
@@Tone-Quest Thanks for the reply. So what is taking the load from the amp? Are you using a real cab as well as the sim? I wasn't sure if the cab in the picture was just a visual of the type of cab-sim you were using. I think I get it now.
@@Dani-El. I usually try to give a visual representation of the signal chain. What about loudness through a typical, efficient guitar speaker? Is stompman loud enough for rock/blues rehearsals as a clean power amp for a modeller?
Thanks for sharing the video! Did you really go out of the speaker out of both the Terror Stamp and the Stompman as it seems from the diagram, and if so -- did you have to do anything to attenuate the volume going into the Cab M?
Yes, I went from the speaker out of both amps into the Cab M. No, I didn’t have to do any attenuation but you must run from the Cab M into a speaker or a load of some sort.
@@jevonwhite5193 Yes, that is very do-able. If you don’t want to connect to a speaker cabinet, you can use the send in the effects loop as a line out. The Terror Stamp manual states, “The SEND jack output can also be used as a Line Out without Cab Sim, if the Terror Stamp is being used as a preamp on a pedalboard with no speaker connected.” If you want to use a speaker cabinet, then just put the Cab M+ between the speaker out and the speaker cabinet. I hope that helps. 😃
@@Tone-Quest maybe my unit is faulty? I can’t turn the master volume past like 10 o clock before all this hiss comes on in the background. It still sounds good but it’s unbearable once I stop playing

If you check on the inside there is a button where you can adjust the temperature of the tube itself so it will increase o decrease the distortion.
