Matt Garstka is just disgusting in the best way possible. This dude probably just showed up with a click , starting jamming, and called it a performance. Nonetheless it was still phenomenal. Oh man. I'm excited to see where Garstka will be in two decades.
My top 3: Anika Nilles CRUSHES it at 0:07. She's too good to have been put first in this compilation! Ndugu Chanclear at 5:31 puts on a next-level drum clinic with a level of focus and class that every drummer should aspire to! Close your eyes when listening to Ralph Humphrey at 6:25 as he sounds like he could be playing a masterpiece for a Russian Ballet! Honorable Mention: Dave Elitch has become one with the music at 1:26. Don't let the simplicity of the beat fool you. His playing is utterly transporting!
+HireAStudio She's a good drummer to be sure. But I think there's a little bit of a double standard in effect. My first impression was "wow, not many women can drum that way" which is of course sexist, but probably backed by data (generally speaking the drumming world is SATURATED with males.) However if she were a man, my initial reaction would have been.. meh, maybe it's this particular video/sound, but she seems severely dynamically lacking. Yes, Garskta indeed shits on everyone.
William DePue Anika is fucking sick. I really don't want the fact that she is female to affect my judgement of her drumming in any way. I think it's silly if people do think that way!
+jefferson ramirez PASIC happens every year around the fall time. It goes to Indiana for two years and the to Texas for one year, and then back, so it'll always be in either Indiana or Texas
The Sakae and Yamaha drums had the cleanest, most resonant sound. The Mapex kits were very "thuddy," muddy in comparison. Of course, who knows how the sound guy affected this, head selection, tuning, etc.
+Nicola Righetto true, but i could never play the cymbals like that. Mine are just ever so slightly tilted towards me, it's just way easier to crash em like that in my opinion.
I agree, mine are also slightly tilted, because i need just the right angle to crash without breaking them. That drummer used such an extreme tilt because he played a jazz-like genre which requires less volume. In this case, he hits the cymbals with the tip of the drumstick for a clear and controlled sound
Metal drumming is based on pretty much speed alone. A lot of these drummers are no doubt fast, but play in a very interesting way. The problem is only people who understand percussion to a certain point can really decifer what's interesting about a groove being played so fast.
+goatstaog +Sean Meister What are you all on about? You all know PASIC is a percussion convention, right? It would only make sense that the clinics feature insight into the instrument (which they did, I was there) and a showcase of the clinicians skills among those who can appreciate those skills (other drummers!). I completely disagree with "over playing". They're soloing over tunes (and metronomes), like how do you over play that? lol. Gartzka is far from sloppy dude idk what you video you were watching. When's your PASIC clinic video coming out?
I never said anything about anyone being sloppy…I said I thought they over played…just a personal opinion…matt is not at all sloppy, I just do not like filling every space with a drum beat…it shows amazing skill but for me it lacks taste.
+Sean Meister Read the comment chain. The sloppy bit wasn't directed at you. Taste is subjective and drumming is very personal. It's like listening to any other instrumentalist in jazz express themselves through the instrument. No one else plays like them because no one else is them. The very same principle applies to drums and drummers.
3:25, I seen this guy before, his playing doesnt seem deep, it just sounds like he's trying to hard to be different, it's good to be different sometimes ,but it can't be everything.
90% sound all the same. Why has drumming become about the same gospel chops over and over. The old guys still understand playing musically but heaps of new guys just sound the same to me. Fast, slamming chops with no reason or taste. Getting really boring.
Yes, man!!...you're 100% correct...All the same boring fast backbeat type of shit!! This is why I cannot listen to drummers coming up today. When are they going to realize that a snare drum and all the components of the drum set can produce more than one sound! It's getting really boring & sad to hear a snare drum only hit hard in the centre with no finesse, touch, sensitivity or dynamics!!!! The only true players for me were Guliana & Humphries!! They stood out because..you can tell they studied from the drummers who developed the instrument from the start!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Maybe i do rene10003. It's just my opinion. I play double bass, piano, drums and percussion and grew up in a very musical family. If the music needs a simple touch i play what is needed with no flash. My taste in music is very old school as i don't get most modern stuff as i find it has no soul. Not everything is about the notes you play. Great beauty in space which i think is missed these days. Finding the right tone for a tune means more to me the me the how many notes i can fit in a bar. I have no idea of the music you love any why you love it. This is just my opinion. You have every right to have your own.
+Peter Thoms That's cool, I've been playing drums for about 20 years and am about to graduate with a degree in percussion performance. Just because there's a lot of notes doesn't mean there's no meaning behind them . It's raw self expression, it's a drum solo, if the urge to shred around the kit (young people with stamina, who knew!) and they have the capacity to do it in spectacular fashion, then why not? Why do they have to fit your parameters as far as what is and isn't acceptable?
Matt Garstka is just disgusting in the best way possible. This dude probably just showed up with a click , starting jamming, and called it a performance. Nonetheless it was still phenomenal. Oh man. I'm excited to see where Garstka will be in two decades.
Couldn't resist to laugh when the guy in the crowd started @2:10 haha! "WOO, YEAH, WOO, YEAH, WOO, YEAH"
+Jeff Albertson i mean Garstka's playing may cause some orgasms lol
Thank you very much @VicFirth! :)
You're a very good drummer!
+Lindsay Artkop You are an awesome drummer! Next time there will be a bigger audience!
+rockdahaus +lucasdrums thank you for your support :) I appreciate it
+LucasDrums lol
You killed it Lindsay. Well done. On your way to the top!!!
I was there! I was sitting front row for moritz Mueller. Awesome clinic. It really blew me away. Too bad, not many people showed up to his show.
People need to understand this is not a concert but a drums only convention
Very nice video! The drummer skills are awesome!
Great Video and always a learning tool for any drummer/percussionist.
My top 3: Anika Nilles CRUSHES it at 0:07. She's too good to have been put first in this compilation! this is awesome! some of the best drummers right now
the line-up is spot on. 100%
matt garstka is killin it!
Anika Nilles part was my favorite, looked super fun.
Perfect line up
Lmfao the guy yelling during Garstka is amazing
Garskta does kind of shit on everyone.... Incredible.
+HireAStudio Bar the Anika she is rad.
+HireAStudio She's a good drummer to be sure. But I think there's a little bit of a double standard in effect. However if she were a man, my initial reaction would have been.. meh, maybe it's this particular video/sound, but she seems severely dynamically lacking. Yes, Garskta indeed shits on everyone.
+Nathaniel Whitman To be fair, this is definitely one of her weaker performances. I believe the stuff she has on her youtube channel is a lot better.
William DePue Anika is fucking sick. I really don't want the fact that she is female to affect my judgement of her drumming in any way. I think it's silly if people do think that way!
Guy at 2:43 - what cymbal is that between then crash and hats? like a small muffled chinese it sounds like? stack?
awesome stuff !
which is the name of the song that plays Dave Elitch?
Anyone know what song dave elitch was playing along too?
AKIRA JIMBO. one of my all time favorites
What kit is Rashid Williams plating on??
wow...some really great players in there. creative...
Anyone know what song Rashid Williams is playing?
I want the drumset of rashid williams so bad! It is beautiful
Someone please tell me what track rashid was playing?
awesome video
i love how you can't even see ndugu's face because of his cymbal height lol
Amazing😱
Some interesting cymbal setups 😄
daora esse video toca muito
Guiliana showing everyone how its done. Sometimes less is more!
How can i know when these events are happening I want to go one near me but I don't know where to check ? :/
+jefferson ramirez PASIC happens every year around the fall time. It goes to Indiana for two years and the to Texas for one year, and then back, so it'll always be in either Indiana or Texas
:( anything in new jersey?
Nah man it alternates between the two since the Percussive Arts Society is situated in Indianapolis.
Holy fuck that Anika has some hot beats.
"Guiliana, i'm your father!" Jojo M. :))
Jojo Mayer and Mark Guiliana are like Elvin and Tony of our generation.
She rocks🔥
Wow! Jinpo performed there!!
Which track is Dave Elitch playing over?
It's called "Huggin' & Kissin'" by Big Black Delta
Awesome. Thanks!
Guiliana has insane chops.
Don't wanna be the one going in after Garska
wheres thomas lang??!!!
I don't think he was scheduled to be there.
First drummer. Was that drum kit in the kitchen?
+Fred Rogers it stops being funny around the 2nd time you hear it, imagine the 984237th one
+supermachoman haha thanks man
oh man that one guy in the Garstka audience, hahaha. "woooh"
Matt Garstka, best drummer here!
Anika all the way...
Faltou o Kiko Freitas do Brasil.
YEAH LINDSAY!!!! :D:D
Thank you Libby :D
gerald heyward...works for me :)
why chris coleman not here?
you left off one of the top ten drummers in the world?
Mueller for the win
+goatstaog why so?
+goatstaog I was at his clinic. Dude blew me away. I can't tell you how wrong you are. No offense.
+goatstaog underrated compared to the garstka and elitch fan base...i've been following him for years now definitely has more originality imo
Holy fuck, from :33 - :45 my jaw was on the floor.
Cool video of many drummers. You had the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly, LOL.
The Sakae and Yamaha drums had the cleanest, most resonant sound. The Mapex kits were very "thuddy," muddy in comparison. Of course, who knows how the sound guy affected this, head selection, tuning, etc.
5:29 those cymbal angles holy fuck
Still better than Anika's negative tilt, which is the best possible way to crack your cymbals
Would somebody please feed Akira Jimbo as much Mexican food as possible before he leaves San Antonio. My god!
+Nathan Redmon Funny. One wonders where he keeps the muscles that make him so fast and agile on the kit.
Anika
what was that???? 3:18 mark guilana
Matt Garstka.
gerald
Who was the loser in the front row playing on his Phone when Anika was up? hahahaha you're missing the show bro!
Akira Jimbo bit was just a rehash... sad. :
I hate that kind of solos only based on speed. The groove is way more important, at least for me.
+Jimbkf4 Agreed. Not feeling much soul in this lot.
I agree that groove IS important--but hell if u got chops and can use them in the right context --there's something 2 b said 4 that also
Metal drumming is based on pretty much speed alone. A lot of these drummers are no doubt fast, but play in a very interesting way. The problem is only people who understand percussion to a certain point can really decifer what's interesting about a groove being played so fast.
mapex + evans + meinl = the wrost combination ever
Meinl is the best in the game right now and if you think otherwise you're tripping.
Tama Remo meinl is the best combination ever.
Alex Frank mmmm well not everyone loves trash cans
Stay off drugs bro. All great brands, honestly there isnt a bad brand anywhere its all preference.
I love NDUGU CHANCLER play style.
the bigininng and the last whit women are the amateul level.
4:00 was one of the best
He sucks
None of them played with any dynamics until Ralph Humphry and they cut away from him too soon.
eh….too much over playing for my personal tastes…out of all of them I really enjoyed Mark Guiliana.
+Sean Meister him and Ndugu
+goatstaog +Sean Meister What are you all on about? You all know PASIC is a percussion convention, right? Everybody just can play chops, no more personal style on drums
Dave Elitch: that was so fucking boring.
soooooo true lmfao
3:25, I seen this guy before, his playing doesnt seem deep, it just sounds like he's trying to hard to be different, it's good to be different sometimes ,but it can't be everything.
I love jazz music and the jazz drum style.
But FFS why do most of their bass drums sound like complete garbage
they have the best sounding kick drums
Fucking horrific.
Akira Jimbo silly
90% sound all the same. Why has drumming become about the same gospel chops over and over. The old guys still understand playing musically but heaps of new guys just sound the same to me. Fast, slamming chops with no reason or taste. Getting really boring.

You must have some terrible ears.

Akira Jimbo could do better, he's an impressive drummer and there was playing like if he had 2 years of experience ¬¬
+Jorge B He is one of my top favs and I think he has slowed down by this current performance.. =/
Most snare drums sound horrible, what is with the new cymbals that sound like trash can lids ? Lol
The acoustics in this room are so bad.
There is NOTHING attractive or natural looking about a girl playing drums. Even if she is way better than I am.
