Shane, thank you for so openly discussing the burden complex and all its real and perceived concerns. I struggle with that feeling and it's so comforting to hear Hannah genuinely respond with love and understanding.

Absolutely. She listens respectfully and doesn’t try to quieten him, which people often do, even if their intention is to make you try to stop feeling that way.

I absolutely love how open they are. There is nothing fake about these 2. Most youtubers try to put on this fake persona or come across larger then life. These 2 are humble, always themselves and don't care how silly or embarrassing it may/can be. I hope all their wishes and dreams come true!!!

Thank you both for being willing to talk about this. My sister has done for me over the years some of what you did, Hannah; I’ve been a wheelchair user since age 2-3 or so and had a strong burden complex experience throughout that time. It’s so hard, moving through life trying not to be “that disabled kid”/masking the difficulties of your disability as much as possible so the people you love and respect see *you* and not a problem. Her therapist told her a story he heard once that reminded him of us: Someone ridiculed a man for carrying his sibling on his back (when his wheelchair broke I think it was), saying how hard his sibling made his life, and the man said “He’s not a burden, he’s my brother.” Made me cry then just like this story makes me choke up now. I have friends I believe love me like this, but to think I might could find romance someday where a person could see me as anything but burdensome is incredibly moving. Y’all provide hope with your example. Thank you for being willing to talk about such vulnerable stuff. I respect and appreciate you both a ton ❤❤

My husband and I had a long distance relationship, we talked on the phone before we ever met in person. I'm not normally "shy" or "silent", but with him I was. He stuck with me and tried like heck to get me to talk more, it worked. We were together 28 wonderful years, until his recent passing. I miss him everyday. We knew very early on there was an attraction, I fell in love with him before I ever met him in person

We have a similar battery story: My wife’s chair was dying at EPCOT in WDW. A very helpful cast member showed us to the nearest hidden outlet, and we plugged in her charger in the Mexico area. I left to find a bathroom, and when I came back, she was surrounded by a mariachi band! After about an hour of charging, we realized that the outlet she had been plugged in to was turned off! We barely made it to guest services and had to plug in there for a while.

What my loving husband did NOT tell you was that I was sitting under a roofed covering in an outdoor area, and I was SO grateful to be out of the sun. There’s not a lot of shade at EPCOT. While the chair is charging, of course MOVING becomes impossible. So I was basically stuck sitting where I was, but there wasn’t much going on in that spot, until this Mariachi band comes out of the little building connected to this awning that I’m sitting under, and right where I am is their outdoor stage. It’s time for their concert, and I’m in the middle of it. They were puzzled at first about why I didn’t leave my spot but I showed them the charger and they were good sports. A few minutes later my husband comes back from the bathroom and sees my predicament. I figured he’d come over and unplug my chair and help me move out of the way, but NO. He stood away from me in the rest of the audience that had gathered, and started taking PICTURES with his phone. I’m dying of embarrassment and he’s recording it for posterity. :) After the muscians’ set was over he did finally come help me and that’s when we realized the chair wasn’t actually charging at all. Fun times. :)

I am a relatively new subscriber and I am enjoying your videos and podcasts. I especially enjoyed this one and your New York story. I cried at the end over Hannah's words and I thought I love this woman. Your channel is educating and teaching me a lot about the difficulties people with wheelchairs face but most of all it is helping me advance in my own journey of trying to learn to love and accept myself in spite of my lifelong mental health disabilities and now increasing physical limitations due to age and weight and the severe burden complex that I have. I am very happy to have discovered you and really appreciate the message you are giving the world. I am so sorry that you have to endure so much crap from the human garbage out there. I hope that those of us who love you are enough to counterbalance putting up with them. Thank you both of you for sharing yourselves with us. I find you so delightful and uplifting.

Shane I completely relate about the burden complex. It's something I struggle with daily. I find it hard friends or loved ones could ever be accepting of my medical and physical limitations. Thanks Shane for talking about the burden complex. I'm the caregiver for my mom and brother and sometimes I have to deal with this. My brother had a stroke and is paralyzed on his right side and my mom is 92 years old. He won't ask for help or do certain things because he doesn't want to be a burden. My mom is spry but has a little dementia. She's probably doing better than I am. You think I was an only child but I am one of eight. Everyone is married with families except for me. They don't think taking care of family is a big deal and never offer relief. I don't think my family is a burden but burnout is in my future. They all go on vacations to relax and recharge but I'm expected to take them with me when I go. When do I relax and recharge?

While i had not thought of the term "burden syndrome" i can relate as for much of my life I was an RN caring for others. I deal with my difficulties by using humor- it can be a little twisted at times finding laughter in the wierdest situations. Shane, when you mentioned Bethlehem, PA (where you lived before Hannah); it brought back a nostalgic memory. I am from Orefield and Schnecksville, PA; which is about 15 miles from Bethlehem. I remember reading many of your articles in our local newspaper 'The Morning Call.' I found your articles interesting, funny and even often self-depreciating with the disability you deal with in your life. I didn't read about you for quite sometime after I moved to Florida. Then one day, I came across one of your and Hannah's videos on YT. I thought OMG; that's the guy that did the articles in 'The Morning Call.' You and Hannah both have a wonderful sense of humor; that is what makes the two of you so endearing. Your trip to NY was an incredible story. If the two of you could make it through that with humor; it is obvious why the two of you have had a long term relationship.

Thank you for sharing your beautiful stories! I think you are both qualified to give relationship advice! Even just telling your stories is helpful, like your New York story. A lot of people feel that relationships and dating have to be 'perfect' for them to be successful and that's not reality. The reality is that what makes a relationship successful is being able to problem solve together, face challenges together, and grow together. It's something that not a lot of people think about when it comes to dating and I think it's important to remember that not all dates have to be perfect and romantic. It's the little everyday challenges that make you learn about each other and your compatibility. Please keep sharing your stories! Love you guys!

I've heard this story before (must have been in a previous video?), but I really appreciate this retelling. Shane, your emotional intelligence is off the charts and so impressive, as is your willingness to be vulnerable with your viewers!

Same. I dont really care for podcasts. I think i enjoy them more when they are video recorded and uploaded to RUclips. I can watch their podcast all day tho. Its like watching their youtube videos. The only difference is they are longer and i dont mind that one bit either.

LMAO that would have been epically hilarious if Shane had yelled out across the waiting room...
"IM OVER HERE!!! IM SHANE!!! IS HANNAH OKAY? I NEED SOME ASSISTANCE GETTING OVER THERE!"😂😂😂
I can just imagine the entire waiting room getting silent and every head in the place turned to look at Shane, when all of a sudden the "REAL" Shane stands up to head into her appointment!
Poor Shane would have turned beet red, just mortified!
    LOL😂❤️

😢 That burden complex explanation was so good and and so sad at the same time.
I also want to point out that the elderly also get a burden complex. My ageing dad has it now as he’s used to being the one who can fix and do anything to needing help with many things. It’s sad. I feel bad for him. I don’t want him to ever feel like a burden.

I love this NYC trip story! I lived in NYC for 20 years, the hot and humid days were so unpleasant. If anybody can still have fun in that situation, they are definitely with the love of their lives! 😂 I got tearing hearing Hannah’s response at the time. It’s so amazing that a partner can make you feel ok, even in a tough situation. It’s such a comforting feeling. Thank you guys for sharing that.❤

oh my goodness … so many times in life I have had situations where all signs are screaming to change my plans (for any number of reasons); I think it’s a universal condition … we get the whispers but become more entrenched the harder it becomes. You guys tell stories so beautifully and I love how much you respect and love each other. Much peace and love to you. I haven’t watched or listened to much about the IVF process - but you’ll be amazing parents and I am sending you so much peace and support.

OMG I love you guys! You just have to laugh at yourself to keep from going nuts! I’m in my 70s and often have trouble getting around. When ever I get myself into a difficult situation, my daughter and a I laugh like two hyenas. Can’t read a sign? Misunderstand a server? Almost fall down so my daughter has to catch me? No problem! We laugh at the ridiculous situation! I love your podcast!

episode 4 was awesome, Because I can relate, my daughters, son and son in law all went to atlanta to see the Body Exhibit. My oldest daughter used powered wheel chair for long trips. Being our 1st trip out, using the chair, the ramp, doing all the disabled stuff, we got in and it was awesome. 3/4 way thru we realized it needed to get plugged in. Since it was so new, we didn't know it had to be powered up for so long and ran out. Her brother found an outlet and we tried to push her to it it was so heavy, that several people helped get her across the large room. My daughter encouraged the others to finish the tour, I sat on the floor near her. Hoping to power up enough to get it to the van. They finished, but it still needed alot more time since the charge was so slow. As I got up to help push again, I saw a lever on the bottom and a letter "N". I pushed the lever into "N" and it became a wheelchair...Lol...we easily pushed her across the street to the van and up the ramp. We laughed how hard we'd struggled to just push it across the big room! Yup she called the place that delivered and showed her how to use it, telling them that they forgot the most important step, was to show and know, how & when to use " N"eutral".

I just had a 12 hour layover in New York after a 5 hour red eye flight literally last week and listening to your story is giving serious flashbacks hahaha. I was so convinced we could strut around NYC Elf movie style on basically 0 sleep! Imagining having to also deal with looking for outlets is sending me into hysterics! Thank you for sharing this story lol.

Here you go ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ I do not listen to podcasts generally. I am already a fan of Squirmy and Grubs so that helped me become a Junkyard Mayhem fan! I especially like the name and what it represents to you both! I seriously hear Shane with the burden complex. I am able bodied, but I do get anxious thinking about not being able bodied, through aging, illness, or accidentally. Thank you for speaking on the matter. I enjoy that your podcast has segments! Hannah I am so glad things went better than you thought with your procedure! Sending love to you both 💕
