    That's one of the things everyone thinks Elon was nuts about. Building out that charging network. Truth be told I thought it was going to bankrupt him. Now he was proven right again. Instead of a "If you build it, they will come" attitude that the OEM's were adopting Tesla went and did it themselves. Now it's many times bigger than anybody else's and the standard going forward.

      @1flash3571 I hope that non Tesla owners don't get charged a premium. I've read recently that the rate at Tesla Superchargers is typically around twice the local residential rate, $0.25/kWh to $0.50/kWh. There was also talk of making the hardware open source. I would think that if public funds are being used to build NACS chargers that on at least those chargers, there should be parity on the price for every vehicle plugging in. I would also think that if not now, at some point these publicly funded chargers would be not owned by Tesla.

Sandy Munro and his wife, who is a highly qualified engineer, both agreed that the Tesla connector is the most elegant and easy to use connector for both young and old with the connector being much more ergonomic and efficient than any other in the world.
      Aptera is ramping up production and has finalized the molds for the body and frame components with those parts now being pressed and checked for quality. They are still ticking off the boxes on the supply chain and making headway on that to. The IRA rules always stated that a condition for receiving the funds were that the chargers needed be opened to ALL electric vehicles. Now that Tesla is opening it's network up, they qualify for IRA funds. Electrified America helped immensely by their atrocious reliability and availability which forced automakers to make deals with Tesla.
    This is final blow to ICE as their infrastructure argument will now disappear with Tesla's massive Supercharger network and their 99.98% reliability.
    Stellantis/Chrysler not joining yet is a moot point since they have no EVs in North America.

      @jbbeiser983
      That is true for AC charging which is below 20 Kw (usually 6KW though)
      For DC charging they bypass the car internal charger and connect directly to the battery. Then the charger decides how to deal with the battery.
      The CCS plug has 2 separate pins that connect the charger directly to the batteries.
      The Tesla NACS uses the same connection pins for AC and DC charging. The car electronics talks to the connection to decide if it gets a direct connection to the battery or if it goes to the internal charger.

      NACS uses the CCS communication protocol. This is different from the Tesla protocol. Tesla's use the CAN bus and a simpler handshake. CCS uses Ethernet over Power and a more complicated authentication protocol. V3 Superchargers support both, V2 chargers only support the Tesla protocol. As a result NACS cars will only be able to use V3 and V4 Superchargers, they won't be able to charge at V2s. Newer Tesla cars support both protocols older Teslas like my 2019 only support the Tesla protocol. It's an open question as to whether cars like mine will be able to charge at third party NACS chargers, they can't use the CCS adapter but what the native NACS chargers do hasn't been specified.

    I think the naast adoption is good. The one thing I do expect is that the nacs is as kind to both current EVs on the market and work as reliable on the old and new EVs, even with the adapters. What I do often see is there is little incentive to support existing EVs on the market, whole this second hand EV market is more relevant to most people as they transition to EVs in terms of affordability. I am getting an impression in many stories and insights in the second hand market is that they are oftem an afterthought in support. The reason why, it is an impression, is because the business model at the end of the day is still sellimg more cars than the more costly aapect of maintaining current EVs on the market. I heat little about quality aftermarket solutions to professionally amd reliablynupgrade current EVs on the market to new changes, such as chargers in this case. I would like to hear and see more on aftermarket support for second hand, or more, vehicles on the road., today, to see a more robust EV market in general. The main impression I'm getting today is that there is only more focus in nee cheap EVs, bit little to keep cheaper existing EVs on the market and keep them up with the times.

    The only thing positive about the CCS charge connector is, is that in the rest of the world 3 phase 400 V. Is everywhere available. Companies, supermarkets, parking garages and even homes can make a reasonable charge available with just a plug on the wall instead of an expensive charge-station. Example with 32 A socket. USA 32A x 220V = 7 kW. The rest of the world 32 A x 400 V x √3 = 22 kW. This is even enough to top up delivery vans overnight. Apart from that the Tesla connector is more user friendly.

    I live in western Washington state, commonly called the Puget Sound region. Our electricity is managed by Puget Sound Energy (PSE, not to be confused with PG&E), serving 4M people over 6,000 square miles. It provides both electricity and natural gas, although my natural gas is supplied by Cascade Natural Gas. 46% of electricity is supplied by local power plants with the rest purchased from other utilities in the USA and Canada. PSE has begun a project to install (worthless) DC and Level 2 chargers using CCS connectors. I don't understand why they're wasting their (our) money installing these chargers (usually just a few chargers at each location with only 3 locations currently operational) when NACS-based chargers will replace them in a year or so. The only good thing about these chargers is they are being supplied with 100% renewable energy through their Green Power program.

    Why is it that Tesla is able to develop and implement their charging network without any outside funding, but other automakers need this. This alone shows the internal drive to create the best product in the market and willing to invest in that. It took Tesla almost 10 to reach the point where they now are and build cars that are excellent and becoming the standard for others with a cost structure that is coming down, increasing margins. They’re willing to spend time in developing completely new products together with the necessary tooling in house and accept that it takes longer than expected. Hence the famous Elon time.

    This is quite a silly narrative. I think you have it completely backwards. It is bad government policy to subsidize 1 company’s chargers that work exclusively on their own cars. So Tesla immediately began exploring magic dock, then, later agreements with other automakers when they opened up their standard. SAE jumps in and we now have the J3400 standard no longer in Tesla’s full control with modifications to benefit rollouts based on US infrastructure. Merely days later, the government agrees to include Tesla. What the government wanted was to fund a standard across the industry . Rather than CCS, it turned out to be J3400. I think that is just fine from the government perspective and it looks like their initial policy did, in fact, incentivize getting to a standard. So I don’t think the government begrudges any of this. Both sides are winners here.

    Tesla already has the best network without govt funding. It's more important politically, for the govt to seem to be contributing, when they aren't really a necessity in charging expansion. NACS was not the standard when the infrastructure bill was written and voted into law. It was, prior to November 22nd, Tesla's proprietary standard. CCS was the defacto U.S. standard. It made no sense for the federal government to fund a proprietary charge standard. Now that Tesla has opened the standard and it has been adopted as the U.S. charging standard funding it makes sense.

    Tesla is the market leader in the US for such chargers, yes. But they can not price gauge the charger tech as it is now considered as a general patent now (and they promised to give away the IPR for these chargers also?). So the net economical impact is much less to Tesla than what you would expect at the first glance. Tens of millions to hundreds of millions, not billions. It is not insignificant, but in a trillion(ish) dollar company scale this is only a pocket money.
