As an observer from the UK and absolutely no supporter of hereditary monarchy, I'm left thinking that granting a president immunity from ANY illegal acts would mean that there would be fewer checks and balances on his/her power than were on King George III at the time of the American Revolution. If it transpires that your SCOTUS finds a way to allow this to happen, the US becomes a failed 'democracy' and the future for us all looks grim. And, before anybody tells me to 'mind my own business', given the power wielded by the president of the US, it is everybody's business.

The phrase "By The People" means everyone in the government is a citizen restricted by the same laws as any other citizen. If the President had any kind of criminal immunity, that would make him/her unequal to the common citizen and the principle of "by the people" would be broken. If SCOTUS and Congress are all bound by citizen laws, then so should the President. I can't help but wonder if the right-wing Justices are angling to give themselves "absolute immunity" as well, being the highest members of their branch. One pf the arguments I heard from, I think it was Alito, was "What if a president organized a protest against a specific piece of Legislation that Congress was considering, would that be illegal?"
Considering that particular argument I have to say that it was an impossible situation which would never occur based upon the fact that if a president did not care for a specific piece of legislation, there would be no need to protest since that president could simply VETO the bill should it come to the desk in the Oval Office.
To me, this was a silly hypothetical presented by a Justice to do nothing more than waste time.
The entire proceeding should NEVER have occurred since the SCTUS should have NEVER taken the case.
The other thing which was mentioned was the part where a good prosecutor could indict a 'ham sandwich'?
THAT is a scenario that I personally would like to see played out and proven as fact. How could an inanimate object be indicted?

Excellent segment! Aside from the Supreme Court, my biggest concerns are: 1. Educating voters about Kennedy's positions on important issues; 2. Educating voters about the electoral college and the effect of staying home or voting for a third party candidate. Not easy.

The SCOTUS hasn’t said that a President can get away with anything. Trump’s lawyers are arguing that, and the SCOTUS still has the opportunity to rule against the insane idea. Don’t think that doom has already descended. We have to hear what the court says. IF they rule badly on this, THEN fight against the ruling.
