A fight between James Bond (Roger Moore) and Chang (Toshiro Suga) in the movie "Moonraker" from 1979
Great Technique footage you should try that in the dojo :P

I can see that he is a real kendoka. Even though he was doing some stupid movements, to please the audience, there was at least a little okuri ashi there.
Fun fact: the shinai (sword) is made of bamboo, not to injury the opponent.

  • @jacktheripoff1888

In the 60's the Bond franchise owned action adventure. By the late 70's they had serious competition. They now needed the 007 films to get the kids to go to the theater to see. They could not rely on people in their 40's who had grown up reading the Fleming novels. Campy was also the order of the day for this time period. Things looked a bit touchy after Man With the Golden Gun, but The Spy Who Loved Me put it back in good fiscal condition. They intended to keep it that way. Moonraker was a huge money maker that looking back on you can say, "Hey, they did what they had to do."

Lol 🤣 I wonder When I was a kid, I didn't laugh when I watched this scene. The kendo guy attacks looked cool (at that time). But now I've been playing kendo for 18 years, and this movie is played again on TV, now it looks so hillarious. 🤣 I am thinking why that guy bothered wearing whole kendo armor just to kill Bond. And most of all, a bamboo sword (shinai) is a poor choice to really kill Bond. Why didn't he just grab a real katana sword, instead of his bamboo sword being cut rapidly to pieces by Bond. Lol 🤣

Sometimes (I know, utterly reasonably) I wonder how they sort out the insurance issues after such a fight. The blue glass dome was worth a million. The whole glass collection, probably as much. The clock and the piano were ruined. So, does 007 or MI6 have a special insurance to cover such collateral costs?
