Eternal was way better than people rated it. The response reminded me of how audiences responded to Contact when it hit theaters. Now Contact is a classic. Eternal is not that caliber but it was conceptually big in the same way. I enjoyed it and wanted more.
Folks forget Eternals came out in 2021, no one wasn’t going to the theaters till No Way Home came out which was at the end of 2021… Had Eternals come out after No Way Home then it might’ve done better.
Marvel/disney: make a heart touching indie/like super hero movie Also Marvel/disney: change this, change this, add jokes here. Change this... movie does "bad" Also also Marvel/disney: It was the director and the subject not us
Even "flops" can have great story telling. The whole point of a franchise for the studios is long-term profits, and as you point out a great foundation story can spawn even greater hits in its sequels and other following chapters. I loved your idea that the Eternals would have benefited from a longer format production - there is an obvious appetite for multi-part offerings when done well on an epic scale as demonstrated with Dune (even if it has taken a few attempts over the decades)
Aaaah. That hurts. This approach of Disney to go for "guaranteed hits" is exactly the reason how the Sequels that must not be named (but to give a clue: There's a parentless child on a dessert planet, a planet killing space station and... oh, and somehow, Palpatine returned) happened. When will they ever learn???
I stand by the opinion that if you left the movie (almost) exactly as it was and it was instead The Eternals 2... it would've worked. Give me all of the backstory and the buildup and their journey through time, ending with the group splitting apart... and then have the whole Icarus storyline in the second one! Visually, this movie is stunning. Nothing can take that away. But I didn't feel connected to these characters, so having to watch their build up and breakup and reunion all in the same movie was a bit much.
I agree. If they had the origins of the team as one movie, it would have given more time to get to know the characters and them as a team, and then give us that gut punch at the end when they split up. Make it a period piece like Captain America: First Avenger, and then continue that plot in the next one. The setting of the ancient world was so facinating, if the whole movie was them travelling to different civilizations, watching them grow, and the end was the fight where they kill all the deviants, that would have been so unique and intersting. Have the end credit scene be Icarus killing Ajak, and make us wonder why for the years between movies. Leave us wanting more.
I mean when was the last time we speculated a cliff hanger as much as Tiumut in the ocean? We are still wondering about that and Eternals have that to us so I think the movie did its job
As much as people may have disliked the eternals , it had the best set up for future films in marvel imo even more so than Antman and kang. The celestials have been teased for so long and to actually get a "lengthy" scene featuring them just to have it shelved totally sucks.
I hear what you’re saying and I agree they need to take more risks than they have been. But one thing to keep in mind is making movies costs a lot of money. And you need the financial success of these tentpole movies to absorb the risk of these more creative movies that will likely lose money. Obviously money can’t be the sole reason for making a movie. But it’s definitely a big part.
Kevin Feige needs to see this. Back in the ‘90s, comics used subtle editor’s notes for crossovers: ‘This happened in Incredible Hulk No. 356. -Your friendly neighborhood Stan.’ That little note was enough to get me excited and dive into that comic-or, if I’d already read it, marvel at how the stories were entangled. Imagine the MCU doing this: when Ajak tells Ikaris about Thanos’ snap, a note pops up: ‘This happened in Avengers: Endgame. -Your friendly director, Chloé Zhao.’ No flashy cameos, just clever connections.
With so much being shot in studios these days, in front of green screens, it was quite refreshing to see this film being shot on location. If nothing else, it's beautiful to look at. Props to Chloe and the cinematographer.
i didn’t like this movie but when you compared it in the context of phase 1, i now totally agree with you. they’re closing a pretty big door by not doing another.
A series focusing on the Great Lakes Avengers with HEAVY Midwest aesthetic and charm, slowed down tempo, but with major overarching tension and some big action scenese, in a Coen Brothers style calmness would be noice.
Eternals was good and I think they should have another crack at it but maybe with a new team of writers. It starts out well but then you never care enough about the characters to have their story hit you in the gut. When Gilgamesh dies it felt more like this was a must have than an actual tragedy for the story. Thena could have leaned a bit more in her mental health issues to make her more relatable but then you find out they're all robots anyway and it makes you wonder if any of it matters if they can just spin off a new copy. Dan Whitman was an interesting addition but it felt out of place given his place in Marvel lore (which we're probably not seeing any time soon either anyway). Ginko was just too goofy and the idea of no one noticing that he never dies is the same trope for every immortal character out there who becomes a celebrity, the suspension of disbelief is hard to hold on to. Make a second one, set it in space and fix the CGI for pip the troll, it looked like it was rendered the day before the premiere.
Marvel productions across the board need to find creative ways to make their films cheaper. Eternals only failed because of how high he budget was. I'll point to Agatha All Along to show how a more limited budget really makes or breaks the perceived "box office" numbers. I know, cheaper budgets equals reduced effects, but as an industry, they need to find ways to make computer effects more affordable.
6:57 I think Agatha shows that a multi-cased show works if it's an episodic tv series. Each member had an episode they're focused on, told their story and developed a character we can get behind. If Eternals had that structure and each member had a chance to tell their story in a episodes, this series would have potential for future projects.
I'll give It the benefit of a doubt that it's alright. Captain Marvel seemed way more likable than in her other appearances. Ms Marvel was cool. I didn't really care for that other hero.
No. It wàs an okay movie but unlike GOTG it failed to make us care about little known characters and should be left in the dust. Those characters aren't big in the comics either so it's not like they're wasted, they're just not interesting and have almost zero fanbase. Leave it alone, focus on tent poles or try new characters.
I would like to break comment etiquette and say something nice 😱 I love the fierce optimism and grace and compassion and understanding of this channel - and this vid - that's always on display from Ryan, Colton and crew. I love the love. And I just wanna share some appreciation. Also Thor Ragnarok was my highlight too! And what a great case for Eternals 2! And for Marvel creative freedom. 😘
The Eternals has the basis for talking about the entire background of the pre-celestial history, early earth history with Gaia, demiurge, Set and the Serpent Crown, lots of stuff to unpack but those are examples. To keep it simple, talk about the aspirants and stuff that led to the celestials being around, thus explaining the deviants and eternals.
I would love to see an Eternals 2! I really enjoyed the ensemble cast and the amazing visuals! now that most of the exposition and backstory is out of the way I think the next story would be free to really open the world and give us fun space epic! and of course...we HAVE TO KNOW what Harry styles was gonna do with the golden snitch!
Eternals was definitely the most over hated MCU movie and one of the more recent times I genuinely disagreed with the majority of people’s opinion. There so much they could do with these characters.
This is just an unconnected pantheon of heroes. It has no meaningful connection to the wider MCU. They are rebranded New Gods by a Jack Kirby returning to Marvel without participating in its continuity. Recognizable stuff that people relate to. That's what they needed.
The Eternals are too many to introduce in a single film. Their powers are too abstract and too powerful to be compelling. Their "villains" are boring monsters with no character or giant space gods with... no character. There is no relationship to regular people or human scale heroic deeds. They are divorced from a moving and involved relationship to the world that hosts them. They live apart and don't serve the good. They tend a world of weak, insignificant, irrelevant people for uncaring space gods who only set it up to farm lives. Why would anyone want to see them at all? Next you'll fight for an Inhumans movie?
I really enjoyed the Eternals. It was a breath of fresh air compared to the other Marvel movies. I remember watching it in the cinema multiple times. I just hope they change their mind about a sequel. I think every marvel movie needs a trilogy, the Eternals especially.
@@user-oi3ry9dx9u that's your opinion but I actually grew up loving the Eternals in the comics so I thought the movie wusnt half bad. You obviously didn't enjoy the comics
I am not a comic book reader but I only have 1 thought that has always crossed my mind since Avengers 1. This comic book universe is so big and there are tons of characters that we haven't even seen and nobody knows about. Why isn't the story telling behind the comics not their bread and butter? Why make all the changes to only do individual movies only instead of crossovers after? How come Adam warlock wasn't in infinity war? How come Galactus wasn't involved in anything? How come they can't seem to get what the fans want and balance it with plot like the comics did?
The Eternals should have been a TV Show !!! And Dane Witman should have turned into the Black Knight with a action scene during the final battle and been with them the whole movie and the sword on the ship should have been his and the post credits still could have been the same
Funny thing about the joke Ryan hates: it still delivers a point. Phaestos was trying to live a normal life, one in which normal tables can get damaged in all sorts of normal ways. That doesn't worry him. The possibility that Ikaris might attack him, however, concerns him enough to have warded his dwelling to neutralize Ikaris's eye beams. Put it all together, it delivers the message, "I don't like you, and I don't trust you." It may also--unintentionally--deliver the subtext that, "Not everything is about you."
I love Ryan, but i think it's important to understand how critical budgeting and profit are to movies. You can't spend over 230 million dollars only to make about 400 million, and then complain that Marvel made a mistake by canceling a movie. That makes no sense at all.
I don't think the MCU is ENTIRELY out of originality considering Agatha was a bigger hit than anticipated (whether you liked it or hated it does not matter, the numbers are still there). Just put Jac Shaeffer on your project and it'll turn out alright.
Do you guys think eternals received such bad rotten tomato scores because there’s a same sex couple with a kid in it? I genuinely think people are that petty. Cause even though it wasnt an action packed film with jokes like all other MCU films. But I don’t think it deserved such bad ratings - worse than Incredible Hulk and Thor 2. Come on. I find that really hard to believe.
No it was boring and rushed.. and kumail was bad casting. They literally could have filled seats all over the indian subcontinent if they had actually cast a hot bollywood actor
No that wasn’t the case. I figured some would make it seem like that was the case when the real problem came down to pacing and connectivity. As long as the movie is the story feels rushed just to get a point to answer the question: “Where were the eternals when Thanos was coming?” The answer made little to no sense and then we were left with a big frozen celestial in the ocean that was left unmentioned for almost 5 years.
@ all of that is still not enough to make me believe it’s worse than Thor 2, Incredible Hulk, hell even Thor 4. It was better than a lot of shit they’ve been shelling out in recent years. It’s still not making sense. So I think my point still stands.
Yes, I would love to see Eternals 2. I have watched and rewatched it many times, and it only gets better as you notice more and more details and nuance. My fingers are still crossed!
I wonder how Eternals would have been received if it got the full Marvel push without the Covid restrictions. It had a marketable cast and a director coming off a best director win at the Oscars. I think they were looking for the next Guardians of the Galaxy with lesser known Marvel characters breaking through.

We need Eternals 2 for the fucking health of the MCU
100% agreed, what keeps me watching Marvel movies at this point is hopes of them making Eternals 2
I find eternals one of the best modern marvel movies. The VFX on this movie are beautiful
same; I didn't mind the "pace" either; love how it all Unfolds .... a beautiful story; that leaves us wanting to see more -
I found it refreshing, the change, from the movies we have had before
@@crispynx40 same here; the Direction of the film alone; so Cinematic - truly a different pace from everything else
Eternals is one of my favorite marvel movies because if the scale the cosmic horror aspect i hope they do more
And doesn’t rely on cringe marvel humour ! That’s like 80s audience enjoy!
i hate that Disney forced Marvel to pump out as much as possible for Disney plus which lead them to lose creative focus and now Disney comes in again and tells them that's why they can't be creative anymore... I hope at least Agatha All Along helped them (re)convince Disney that creative risks pay off :/
Life is too short to wait a decade for one saga to finish. I wish people would understand there are literally thousands of characters in marvel I wish we could get a movie and a tv show every quarter
Did it? Agatha the gayest Marvel show e-ver
For a movie that most people disliked because it's boring and slow paced, i just can't see how the jokes and light hearted moments would be the main problem
Went to the theater and seen it twice. Loved it. I wish we got part 2
Eternal was way better than people rated it. The response reminded me of how audiences responded to Contact when it hit theaters. Now Contact is a classic. Eternal is not that caliber but it was conceptually big in the same way. I enjoyed it and wanted more.
I agree 100% we want the universe to be expanded. There is so many beautiful stories to be told.
Captain Rambeau, was not a mistake 0:16
Agreed
Yeah, what’s wrong with her?
Fr they better re-edit this vid and take that out 😤
I think they were referencing the Marvels with that and not the character of Monica Rambeau
@ ahh, I personally kinda liked The Marvels, but that makes sense.
Folks forget Eternals came out in 2021, no one wasn’t going to the theaters till No Way Home came out which was at the end of 2021… Had Eternals come out after No Way Home then it might’ve done better.
I loved externals when I saw it in theaters so interesting and different. Druid displaying his powers was crazy!
Marvel/disney: make a heart touching indie/like super hero movie
Also Marvel/disney: change this, change this, add jokes here. Change this...
movie does "bad"
Also also Marvel/disney: It was the director and the subject not us
I agree!!! I was looking fwd to an Eternals 2
same here; they could've introduced Blade and Dane Whitman by now as Black Knight; and told us So much MORE - by now -- setting up a part 3
AAA was a step in the right direction.
I remembered watching this that Kingo was an absolute delight. Balancing so many new characters in the movie was going to be hard.
They probably cancelled it because there’s not a screen crush video on how it connects to Agatha.
this made my day
I loved Eternals. I am still upset no one gave it a chance.
Me to it was great
I argue with people about how good this film was, all, the, time
It had the bad people as loving parents so those with bearded necks were outraged.
Yes! I've been saying that since it came out! You guys are awesome!
I mean when was the last time we speculated a cliff hanger as much as Tiumut in the ocean? We are still wondering about that and Eternals have that to us so I think the movie did its job
Yes. Let us get Eternals 2. Justice 4 Eternals
As much as people may have disliked the eternals , it had the best set up for future films in marvel imo even more so than Antman and kang. The celestials have been teased for so long and to actually get a "lengthy" scene featuring them just to have it shelved totally sucks.
Eternals is and has been my FAV mcu project to date... I see a TRILOGY!
DEFINITELY should do Eternals 2
I enjoyed the Eternals tbh with you....i actually liked it..
i didn’t like this movie but when you compared it in the context of phase 1, i now totally agree with you. they’re closing a pretty big door by not doing another.
OH MY GOD. THE AMOUNT OF AD REELS
7:17 dam the way you described it made me wana watch it again…maybe I missed something 😭
Also, Zhao was hired in 2018, before Black Panther had even been nominated for anything.
I loved The Eternals.
Great video essay! You make very valid points!
I don’t necessarily think they need another movie, but they should definitely be featured in someone else’s.
And they will be. You’ll see some of these characters in the next Guardians or the Nova project.
6:57 I think Agatha shows that a multi-cased show works if it's an episodic tv series.
Each member had an episode they're focused on, told their story and developed a character we can get behind.
If Eternals had that structure and each member had a chance to tell their story in a episodes, this series would have potential for future projects.
The Marvels was great. But hearing that there was a longer and more epic cut, kinda pisses me off.
I'll give It the benefit of a doubt that it's alright. Captain Marvel seemed way more likable than in her other appearances. Ms Marvel was cool. I didn't really care for that other hero.
The characters can be used in other projects, they don't need a sequel.
Very underrated movie. Looked beautiful too.
18:31 ok, I totally agree with this one! 😂😂 And YES we NEED ETERNALS II
Damn , what did Monica Rambo do to yall smh wth 🤔
Thank you for pronouncing Zhao correctly. So many Americans butcher Chinese names.
Eternals was good idc what anyone says 🔥💪🏾
The Eternals has the basis for talking about the entire background of the pre-celestial history, early earth history with Gaia, demiurge, Set and the Serpent Crown, lots of stuff to unpack but those are examples. To keep it simple, talk about the aspirants and stuff that led to the celestials being around, thus explaining the deviants and eternals.
I like Eternals and would love to see them again
Hey Ryan, haven’t seen you in the last few videos I’ve watched. Hope you’re taking care of yourself bro! Much love from Melbourne 🙌🏽🔥
Why? Because in the comics, they're connected to mutants via the X-Men.
The deviants are connected to mutants or connected to their X gene.
It's almost like Marvel Studios is a BUSINESS operating in the entertainment INDUSTRY...
I actually really agree with this take. The Eternals was awesome. Really needed a sequel.
Like leave them in the trash.
Every stories in Marvel are great. It’s just depended heavily on the director and creator of the movies
Eternals was a GREAT MOVIE ❤ I have the blu ray 4k version. It's another Marvel movie that deserves a trilogy
It literally does not. It was fucking terrible.
Give us Eternals 2!!!
No.
@@user-oi3ry9dx9u no need to yell bro...
I liked Eternals but I think I'll prefer them in other movies going foward.
1:08 wow, I’ve never realized the celestial leaving creates a black hole for a second. That’s a cool literally detail.
The Eternals should have been a TV Show !!! And Dane Witman should have turned into the Black Knight with a action scene during the final battle and been with them the whole movie and the sword on the ship should have been his and the post credits still could have been the same
best video in a while guys!!!
I loved Eternals overall.
Put it all together, it delivers the message, "I don't like you, and I don't trust you."
It may also--unintentionally--deliver the subtext that, "Not everything is about you."
No thank you. One of the most dire marvel films
I love Ryan, but i think it's important to understand how critical budgeting and profit are to movies.
You can't spend over 230 million dollars only to make about 400 million, and then complain that Marvel made a mistake by canceling a movie. That makes no sense at all.
This film is almost a perfect movie for me
WTF it was clearly the worst marvel movie
@joda6748 i dont agree. The movie resonated with me. I loved the characters and I loved the narrative.
@@joda6748How? Over Thor 2 and Quantumania. That's crazy.
XD if the couple were lesbians the problem would have been less yes.
No it was boring and rushed.. and kumail was bad casting. They literally could have filled seats all over the indian subcontinent if they had actually cast a hot bollywood actor
I doubt it, it was just bad
I personally liked eternals the first time i watched it but the quantumania hate gets out of control sometimes
Yes, I would love to see Eternals 2. I have watched and rewatched it many times, and it only gets better as you notice more and more details and nuance. My fingers are still crossed!
I know you hate the Phastos IKEA line... But I still love it.
6:24 exactly, they tried to do something new, but then did something they always do
I wonder how Eternals would have been received if it got the full Marvel push without the Covid restrictions. It had a marketable cast and a director coming off a best director win at the Oscars. I think they were looking for the next Guardians of the Galaxy with lesser known Marvel characters breaking through.
Why do people shit on The Eternals? It was a very good movie and a great origin story of the MCU
